The video uses quick cuts between old and new style footage to show how a person can find themselves in different places in life. Touristic images and locations in Germany and France suggest the video depicts life as a journey shown through travel. Scenes of Jake Bugg primarily focus on him to represent his life not following a straight path.
The song lyrics describe unanticipated situations one may encounter without warning, like a "lightning bolt." Jake finds happiness with a girl but then she also encounters trouble, continuing the theme of unpredictability.
The video uses two different cameras, one modern and one resembling a polaroid, to generate a sense of urgency through fast pans and cuts between shots of Jake, conveying
2. Narrative
Video
From the video there doesn't appear to be an apparent ‘story line’. Throughout the video
the images cut between old and new style of video reinforcing the message of the video
which is a person can find themselves anywhere and everywhere in life. Due to the heavy
use of touristic images there is reason to suggest that the video highlights how life is a
journey, shown through the consistent images of travel (e.g.tram/car/train) and german
writing and french flags. These images are presented in collage of clips starring mostly
him, evoking how his life is not a straight path.
Lyrics
The song represents the unanticipated situations one may find themselves in at some stage
without warning, represented through the “lighting bolt”. Jake also goes on to talk about
how people will just complain about there problems “walk with gritted teeth” instead of
just finding a path to overcoming the problem. Jake finally finds happiness with a girl
but then we assume the story repeats when he says “she fled in the path of a lighting
bolt” highlighting how she is going to run into trouble
3. Camera
There is heavy use of a steadicam throughout the
video which creates a sense of disorientation but
also reality. In addition there is also a
distinctive use of two different cameras one which
appears more modern and through the clean crisp
images and lack of distortion however, the other
camera seems similar to a polaroid which are common
props seen in the indie genre. The camera movement
appears very fast and sharp with quick pans
reoccurring throughout the video generating a sense
of urgency. There are many close up and medium
shots solely focused on jake and he features as the
main focus in the majority of the scene in the
video conveying his importance to the song.
4. Editing
Quick cuts appear often throughout the the video and when we understand that
the song is about journeying through life it could begin to convey the idea
that life is fast paced and in the ‘free spirited’ mind of Jake Bugg could
imply that he does not plan too far ahead and so is constantly changing.
Furthermore, The pace of the cuts also matches the fast pace of the song. We
small montages throughout of developed from 4 or 5 very short clips that all
fit together but are not for the same thing, hinting at the fast paced
changing lifestyle jake lives. From the sequence it appears to be showing two
videos playing alongside each other however, both feature jake which could
symbolise the his past and present reinforced by the clear use of two cameras
from different eras.
5. Iconographyandvoyeurism
This video includes close ups of him walking around, its
voyeuristic but not intrusive.
He is known for his hair, and his very unique voice. He’s
also known for being able to play multiple instruments, and
in this video we see him playing the guitar.
