Detailed video analysis
Disclosure - Latch feat. Sam Smith
The video begins with a shot including the tracks name the blurry back ground
and odd colours give it a modern and edgy feel, using the clear camera parts
to spell out the word the song begins to build up and there is an array of shots
used. A mixture of medium close ups and close ups are used they change
between which what we can only imagine to be the three main narratives of
the video. They’re many of other music videos from this genre where the
video is telling the story of what is happening switching between amplifying
and illustrating the lyrics and the artist themselves are not featuring in it or
very slightly with this one they don’t at all and it focuses only on the
characters in the stories. Through out the video there are very quick edits of
drawn faces at random places this is associated with the artist and is seen as
there motif this links the video to them with out actually naming them.
Even though the song itself is a dance song the video takes a very slow pace,
the video kind of relaxes and use a lot of slow motion to make the video
intimate as it is clear the video is a about love in anyway and in any place and
with anyone you like or choose so the idea of unity is represented. The slow
motion and slow movements in the video shows this and highlights it to the
audience.
At particular points of the video the words say ‘‘I’m latching on to’’ there is a
close up of a girl latching on to the hand of another this illustrates the lyrics
with the video itself. This continues throughout the song and each time the
lyrics references ‘latching on’ the characters seem to latch on to one and
other. Also each time the chorus of the song plays the 3 narrative couples are
back together just them to showing and representing the love and passion in
most represented with a kiss. Nearer the end of the video the chorus plays
and the shots change to all three couples doing the same in the same setting,
the camera circles them which can represent the unity of them the shot
changes to a medium shot allowing the audience to see there body language.
The use of the black darkened background and the glow of small lights shows
isolation and excitement, the darkness cuts them off from the rest of the world
and the idea of them two against the world is portrayed.
Throughout the video the colours change depending on the different stories
the three stories that the music video follows are a young couple hiding it from
everyone, a same sex couple and a slightly older couple. The first couple are
seen to be in a lift for almost the whole video and only express their feelings
to each other when they are alone and hiding it when people enter the lift the
use of muted deeper colours is used this could represent the slight danger of
getting caught but also the passion they have. The second couple there is a
party setting for there story and there are a lot of lights and a brighter setting
this could represent that they aren’t ashamed and want to be seen by every
one and also that there love for one and other is exciting and new. The final
couple are is almost darkness in the comfort of a bedroom this could
represent the intimacy they have but also this could also be showing the

audience that maybe this is wrong perhaps they aren’t together and this is a
situation if cheating and the way he looks at her is almost in shame but in
love. Most likely he knows that’s its wrong but he loves her more than
anything. The video often focuses on the people and the background is
typically blurred this again can represent there unity and its just them against
the world.
