The Influence Of Horace Mann On Education
Horace Mann is referred to as, "the Father of the modern school," and rightly so.1 He is responsible
for the public school system we know today. 1 While head of the State Board of Education, in
Massachusetts, Mann made his mark on the United States of America. 1 He changed the education
system and made history. 1 For the first time the populace recognized the need for a balanced
education. 2 Everyone has value. Everyone deserves a fair chance to gain knowledge. 2 After all,
"Knowledge is power." 2 Mann was also a Christian who firmly believed that all men are created
equal and thus should be equal in the education system. 2
When Mann talked about the value he meant that education is the most valuable resource available
to the human race. 2 Everyone has the right to education, and the quality of that education should
not be based on who your parents are or where you're from. 2 A person's value is given to the by
God above, not by their social standing. 2 No one should be denied a quality education. I completely
agree with Mann. Who are we, as fellow humans, to deem some unworthy because of skin color,
sex, culture, or social standing? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3 Mann believed this and was not afraid to vocalize his opinions either. 2 If America wants to be a
strong, smoothly run country, its citizens must be well educated. 2 We simply cannot be one of the
leading countries of the world if our people lack the opportunity to learn and progress. Take history,
for example, if we do not know history, we are bound to repeat it. We must learn from past mistakes
to ensure a much brighter future. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "... that knowledge is power, that
knowledge is safety, and that knowledge is happiness." 3 Mann stood for these principles and so do

The Influence Of Adversity: The Roman Poet Helen Keller
Every individual comes across difficult moments numerous times on a daily basis; however, it takes

Horace Mann (1796–1859)
Horace Mann was a kid who was born into poverty in Franklin, Massachusetts. He would always go
down to the library to study and learn. He taught himself. The library was his home away from
home. He practically lived there. Horace would read stories beyond his wildest dreams and all the
facts and information he needed. He loved them. Horace was hooked. Since he was born into
poverty he wanted to turn his life around. Horace was determined to make sure everyone gets the
education that he would have liked, he wanted to help.
Early life
Horace was born May 4, 1796, he had no education. So he taught himself all the basic subjects. He
went to the library a lot. It was his favorite place. It was like he couldn't read enough. He grew up
fast and by the time he was twenty he was admitted into the sophomore class at Brown University. It
was a spectacular experience for him because he never really had an education. At that university he
took interest in politics and education. Upon graduation Horace gave a speech about the
advancement of the human race through education and how it would help the human race. He

education deteriorating. So in 1837 the state opened up the first board of education, Mann was the
secretary. In 1838 Mann started a weekly journal, it was about education. It was for teachers and
anybody who would listen. The journal was called "common school journal". With funds from the

By 1918, all states had their own mandatory attendance law. Compulsory schooling was the
preeminent force behind the need for school psychological services, which reciprocally influenced
child study and clinical psychology. John Dewey (1859– 1952) Being regarded as father of
progressive education, John Dewey's most valuable contribution lied in the promotion of practical
approach to education. His progressive education method underlined the importance of experience
in learning, which was contradictory to the earlier days' traditional authoritarian and rote learning
educational approach. John Dewey believed in democracy in education, suggesting a learn process
by participating and doing. His educational approach also put an emphasis on the development of
relevant and practical life skills for students. Although his ideas were often misinterpreted and
distorted, his educational philosophy was truly significant to today's education reform. Additionally,
the influence of Dewey's progressive education and the rise of intelligence testing had served as
cornerstone for educational psychology profession to develop. Brown vs. Board of Education (1954)

Horace Mann 's Concept For Equality
Equality of Opportunity is the idea that all persons in a society are given equal opportunities to
achieve educational and financial equality by having the chance to enter any occupation or social
class. Schools play a paramount role in providing equality of opportunity as they are responsible for
its implementation. Many issues exist for schools to provide equality of education due mostly to a
family's economic condition. Contributory factors such as a student's cultural background, which
test model is implemented at a given school, discrimination in the labor market that disrupts the
achievement of equality of opportunity, all affect the school's ability to implement equality of
opportunity. Another important factor is the inequality between schools that contribute to the
inequality of opportunity. Horace Mann was an early 18th century politician and a visionary in the
area of education reform. He is credited as the person responsible promoting the belief that
education not only be free, but should be available to all. Horace Mann's concept for equality in
education ensures "that everyone receives an education that will allow them to compete for wealth
on equal terms." (Spring, 2014 p. 58.) Considering that school is the foundation on which a person's
future is laid, one can assume that without a solid foundation in education, a person is much more
likely to end up on the bottom of the working class earnings scale. Learned persons would agree that

Education Vs Horace Mann
From the dawn of time, education has been the past's greatest utility in survival. Through learning,
skills that have been passed down from the errors of others, communities were able to learn and
grow with each other. Simple public education systems began to pop up to educate the youth and the
curious, and ever since the first school systems began there has been room for improvement. The
largest reforms of the educational system began at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
Primarily, both Geoffrey Canada and Horace Mann share similar views on school tuition, and
believe that college education should be tuition–free and available to the entire general public. In
Horace Mann's "Communist Manifesto", he writes about the 10 ... Show more content on

This would be a large loss of income for the banks and private industries, however it would mean
that millions would be free of student loan debt, and many hundreds of millions more in the future.
Also similar to Horace Mann, Geoffrey's platform would appeal to the lower class citizens and
"recognize poverty as the key obstacle to learning" (). The ideas of Horace Mann state that there is a
constant class struggle between the lower and the upper classes, and that class struggles are the
cause for all conflicts in society (). Geoffrey Canada plans to merge the gap between these two
classes when it comes to education. Essentially, by advocating for free school tuition, she is also
advocating for a platform in which the poorest children in class would be able to achieve the same
level of education as the child whose parent brings home a six figure salary. The second issue upon
which Horace Mann and Geoffrey Canada both agree upon is the expunging of Standardised Testing
and High Risk test taking. Horace Mann in the "Communist Manifesto" points out that tax–funded,
government run school systems control the information taught. He later writes that the tuition free
educational system would bring an end to the "government force–tax funded schools", and he later
says that the justification for tax–funded school systems is "to train the young to work for the
communal debt system" (). It can be inferred from the quote that

Compare And Contrast Horace Manon And Horace Mann
The history of early education in America is fascinating and complex. Looking back we see many
figures that supported and advocated for the right of education. However, this reflection is about two
significant men that contribute greatly for the future of the U.S education, Thomas Jefferson and
Horace Mann. Thomas Jefferson was the first man to advocate for American civic education. As a
political figure, he worked diligently to create an educated republic. On the other hand, Horace
Mann is considered the leader of the common school movement. Mann worked as secretary of the
board of education, and his policies in education shaped the U.S education. Thomas Jefferson was
born in Virginia in a economic affluent family, and received a strong education since young age.
Therefore Jefferson was a well educated man, spoke many languages, was an avid reader an thinker,
studied law, and boasted great interests in political science, philosophy, religion, logic, architecture,
and many other subjects. In contrast, Horace Mann had a simple up bring, born in Massachusetts he
came from a farmer family, and he learned from a young age the value of work and education.
Horace Mann earlier education was weak since he lived in a small town with moderate resource.
Nevertheless, as an devoted student he used the town library to increase his knowledge. Moreover,
as an industrious young man, he study hard to be accepted at the Brown college.

Science has accomplished many great things. It's explained melting ice caps, it's saved lives, and it's
even literally been able to create black holes in a lab, but it never the less has failed the "modern"
education system on a spectacular level time and time again. One of the biggest surprises in why this
system is so "modern" is because its designer, Horace Mann, developed it in 1873 based similarly to
factories built during the Industrial Revolution (Einsemann 259). While Mann was designing this
system, he founded and edited The Common School Journal. Targeting the public schools and their
issues, he made six main principles. These principles were;
"The public should no longer remain ignorant, that such education should be paid for, controlled,
and sustained by and interested public, that this education will be best provided in schools that
embrace children from a variety of backgrounds, that this education must be non–sectarian, that this
education must be taught by the spirit, methods, and discipline of a free society, and that education
should be provided by well–trained, professional teachers. Mann worked for more and better

Fall 2011 Abstract
This paper discusses the influence of Horace Mann on the issue of education of the masses, evident
in his dedication to improving the quality of education through the process of improving teacher
education, increasing available funding, and standardizing the quality of educational experience
provided to its students. It addresses specifically the areas presented in several of Mann's Annual
Reports published during his tenure including the areas of school buildings, moral values, school
discipline, and the quality of teachers.

When a teacher utilized cruel punishment, he felt that the child's fear rendered them unable to learn
from that teacher. "Moreover, if the teacher is to control the moral, social, and intellectual
development of the child, se must know the child, that is, have access to the child's inner self."
(Tozer, Senese, and Violas 71) While this appears very philanthropic at face value, Mann's primary
concern is not the welfare of the individual child, but the condition of the society produced by the
educational process. He stresses that self–discipline leads to the ability to self–govern; this leads to
law abiding, productive and rational citizens.
The Quality of Teachers
Normal Schools Mann's First Annual report noted that teachers were not adequately prepared to
appropriately teach their students and maintain decorum conducive to learning. He championed the
cause for normal schools which would establish norms for teaching through standardizing
curriculum, classroom structure and methods of teaching. Academically, the teachers' training was
limited to the subjects taught at the common schools.
Teachers as Role Models Mann also emphasized that teachers were moral role models for their
students, and–as such–they were held accountable for their behavior both in and out of the
schoolroom. This practice was considered to be an invasion of the teachers'

Horace Mann Curriculum
Designing Curriculum for a LMS
When Horace Mann came up with the idea of educating the masses, he did so with the thought that
education would elevate the poor and level the playing field in society. Education to Horace Mann
would close the divide between the have and have nots. To Mann, (Baldolato 2002), acquiring
practical knowledge was in fact acquiring power. An educated person in Mann's view would be in
charge of his own destiny, no longer a "slave" to the status quo. Today Mann's views are still
considered practical; however, many variables, dynamics, and unseen notions counteract his idea of
equity in education. The Parent University Initiative principles are designed to negate the disparities
in education and to support the diverse needs of adult learners. The Parent University and Early
College Initiative primary goal is to dismantle old paradigms and stigmas and embrace new theories
and practices. This adult learning program is designed for adults to have an opportunity to cultivate
new experiences and practices for the whole person. The objectives are to stimulate thinking and to
provide support, guidance and nurturing to assure the realization of family and community success.

Horace Mann Analysis
Horace Mann, known as the "father of American public education", wrote the policy document
Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education, that claims Massachusetts's school education is
becoming unequal among the citizens. Mann develops his argument by using European and
American values of men, and how society functions with men that have been treated as equals.
Mann's purpose was to discuss the problems in Massachusetts's education system in order to inform
his audience and persuade a change. Mann's audience assumes an audience that would be
government workers or officials because of his message of changing the education system.
I agree with Horace Mann, education is vital in society and determines how it functions. If certain
groups of people do not receive equal education than others, then society will change and more
poverty, unemployment, and more inequality will increase. The President of Bard College, Leon
Botstein, wrote the opinion piece Let Teenagers Try Adulthood (1999), argues that American high
schools should be abolished. Botstein uses school cliques and brain development to develop the
argument. The author's purpose was to argue that high school are dangerous to kids mental health
and the school system should be modified in order to keep children safe from wrong ideas that are
often present in high schools. The audience of the opinion article are school officials and people
who have the power to change the educational system.

"Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of
men, the balance wheel of the social machinery"
By
Horace Mann.
Horace Mann's famous quote on education can be found in the Twelve annual report of 1848. His
take on education is very different than the puritanical belief system which is based on teaching an
individual based on the word of the Bible in order to maintain social stability. Horace Mann broke
the chains of the puritan's belief system that was controlling society by means of religion and gave
each individual the basic human right for an equal opportunity education; for he demonstrates his

Contributions Of Horace Mann
Known as "The Father of American Education," Horace Mann is listed in Atlantic Magazine as one
of the "100 Most Influential Figures in American History." Although modern education in America
has strayed from the original principles Horace Mann established during the creation of the common
school, his multitude of contributions towards American public education marks him as worthy of
this distinction.
Horace Mann was born May 4th, 1796 in Franklin, Massachusetts. Franklin was a small town with a
strong religious community and, consequently, much of Mann's early education on morality was
derived from sermons at the meetinghouse, although he frequently disagreed with the teachings of
Pastor Nathaniel Emmons. Formal schooling in Franklin consisted of 6–7 weeks out of the year of
substandard instruction, held in a one–room schoolhouse; Mann was dissatisfied with this two–
prong approach to education and only thrived academically due to his devotion to teach himself.
Instead of continuing life on the farm, Mann decided to seek higher education away from his home
and family. After a series of strenuous admission exams, he entered Brown University with
sophomore standing. However, the education provided by Brown University only taught Horace
Mann how to excel in form and not thought; both his essays and arguments were incredibly well–
crafted but lacked substance and hard facts. However, he managed to graduate from Brown
University in 1819 in high esteem as both valedictorian and

The Horace Mann Era
School in the early days
Prior to the first and second Industrial Revolutions, education opportunities in the 13 colonies
during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries varied considerably depending on one's location,
race, gender, and social class. Basic education in literacy and numeracy was widely available,
especially to white males residing in the northern and middle colonies, and the literacy rate was
relatively high among these people. Educational opportunities were much sparser in the rural South.
Education in the United States had long been a local affair, with schools governed by locally elected
school boards. Public education was common in New England, although it was often class–based
with the working class receiving few benefits. Instruction and curriculum were all locally
determined, and teachers were expected to meet rigorous demands of strict moral behavior. Schools
taught religious values and applied Calvinist philosophies of discipline, which included corporal
punishment and public humiliation.
The public education system was less organized in the South. Public schools were rare, and ... Show

The Epistolary Form Of Writing
The epistle in its most basic form is simply a letter, with the epistolary form in the Eighteenth

epistle can be a complex genre of writing. The Epistle can be a collection of poems, a satirical essay,

The Odess Of Horace : Summary : The Odes Of Horace
The Odes of Horace – Summary
Horace, whose full name in Latin is Quintus Horatius Flaccus, was a Roman lyric poet. He is best
remembered for his poetic works The Odes, Satires, Epistles and the Episodes. His works, which
were mostly in Latin, have been translated severally since they were first published more than 2000
years ago.
The Odes, which are now mostly referred to as the Odes of Horace, have been used widely for
academic as well as recreational purposes. In total, Horace wrote 103 Odes which he arranged in
four books. The first three books preceded publication, coming out around 23 BC, while the fourth
Ode was published 10 years later, around 13 BC. In these Odes, he covers varying topics with the
topics of love and friendship, parties and wines as well as birthdays particularly coming on strong.
Horace's use of satire throughout the Odes is well covered, and so is the use of different meters for
each book and even poem. These diverse meters used by Horace were borrowed from lyric poets
from Greece. In the Odes, Horace actually characterizes himself as the heir to the Greek lyric poets
of the Generation past. Despite the heavy borrowing from the Greek poets, he still manages to
display a unique and original sense of originality in the Odes.
Through the Odes, Horace introduces the reader to his everyday life and by sharing his personal
experiences, he familiarizes a reader with the sophisticated side of the Roman Empire. Throughout
the framework of the odes, Horace

Analysis Of Horace Mann 's ' The Massachusetts Board Of...
Horace Mann wrote his beliefs on what education should be focused on in the Report of the
Massachusetts Board of Education, 1848. Mann explains how education can be improved or even
perfected not only in the state of Massachusetts but all across the nation. Mann got most of his ideas
on how an ideal education system should be made up by studying how Persian school systems
created their curriculum in all of their public schools. Mann believes that these ideals are how the
Massachusetts school system should be ran (110–119). However, is it possible for an education
system to become outdated? Mann was a prominent figure in politics for many years and eventually
served on the Massachusetts Board of Education for several years. In that time Mann came to
believe that education should be based around physical, intellectual, political, moral, and religious
educations. Mann got most of his ideas from how schools in the Persian taught these different types
of education. (110) There are many different ways that writer tries to connect to their audience or try
to get their point across. The three major ways a writer does this is through ethos, pathos, and logos.
Ethos is any way the writer takes a reference or a quote from an expert with the same point of view
as them to help build their own credibility. Pathos is words that can completely change the way the
reader feels about certain way about a topic. Logos is anything that is logical and can be proven by

Mann thought that schools should teach a complete educational program including physical
education and musical education. Schools today teach physical education and music to provide their

to do in their religion and politics. Ideally, this is what public schools and teachers try to do today.
Religion is not a part of the public school today. During Mann’s twelve years as secretary of
the Massachusetts board of education he sent back reports to the board as to the condition of schools

“(1) that a republic cannot long remain ignorant and free, hence the necessity of universal
education; (2) that such education must be paid for, controlled, and sustained by an interested
public; (3) that such education is best provided in schools embracing children of all religious, social,

of sectarian religious influence; (5) that such education must be permeated throughout by the spirit,
methods, and discipline of a free society, which preclude pedagogy in the classroom; and (6) that

Horace Mann Influence On American Education
All schools in the twenty–first century are different from each other, may it be how much a student
learns, preparedness for after school, and teaching methods and philosophies of education. Some
schools are on the direction students to work in education, while others are geared to become future
doctors, lawyers, and business leaders. Horace Mann between 1837 and 1848, became the best–
known educator in America, and the best–known American educator throughout the world. He had a
vision for what the future of America's education should look like today, and today's education does
not fulfill that vision. My education up to this point has been what you would expect out of an
upper–class education system. Mann would not be pleased with my educational ... Show more

Mann had believed that if everyone gets same education, that will make all equal. Mann would be
glad to see everyone getting an education, but would want everyone to have the same opportunity.
Mann says, "According to the European theory, men are divided into classes,––some to toil and
earn, others to seize and enjoy. According to the Massachusetts theory, all are to have an equal
chance for earning, and equal security in the enjoyment of what they earn" (Mann). That is where
Mann would see a problem in my education. I was not prepared for any opportunity I desire, my
education and America's education is not the equalizer of all citizens and "as a Means of Removing
Poverty, and Securing Abundance" (Mann). The working class schools still prepare students to be in
poverty. I was prepared to be creative for a predominantly professional jobs, but not to be a

Adversity In The Bean Trees
Adversity; difficulties;misfortune, we experience adversity in many ways, in many different
circumstances. Power causes division and spiteful behavior, although it may be viewed as a great
thing to have. Power is reflected throughout history, present time, and even reflected in books, we've
always faced problems with power. During the Industrial revolution, through the Factory owners,
controlling many workers. Seen in present time with man taking advantage of others because of
status. Finally it can even be seen in books such as The bean Trees, which is able to show a great
representation of how power causes distress, rage, and can even causes backlash from many. Not
having power may mean you don't have much decision making nor capability to do somethings.
Many want to change their situation because where is the fun in being powerless. Adversity leads to

Challenges In The Alchemist
It is through our trials that we build our character. Without challenges we could not become
stronger; and without strength we could not move forward. Just think, if man was not challenged by
extreme weather, we would not have shelter, or if man was not challenged by disease, we would not
have modern medicine. In the same way, individuals are face challenges that make them better and
help them progress in their lives. People like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, and Mahatma
Ghandi were prime examples of this truth. Through overcoming obstacles, each of these men
bettered themselves and ameliorated the world. Similarly, in The Alchemist, Santiago face various

it may have seemed like an impossible feat, the alchemist knew that Santiago had the power to turn
himself into the wind. This is because, through his travels, Santiago had gained the respect of the
Soul of the World, so he was able to speak the Language of the World, and communicate with

the sun for assistance, but none of them were able to help. Only God was able to give him this
power. This showed him how powerful God is, and how insignificant him and all of nature actually

Essay On Victory For Humanity By Horace Mann
Horace Mann once said these words, "Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for
humanity". Many people spend their lives searching for a purpose where they can make a difference
or in Horace Mann's words win some victory for humanity. Some people find this victory by
working as a county prosecutor. While being a county prosecutor is a demanding and fascinating
career, overcriminalization remains a problem. What makes this career so demanding is the diverse
duties and task which are performed by the county prosecutor. For example, the person in this
position has to handle all felony cases in that county. In smaller counties he or she may have to

Overcoming Adversity In Chaim Potok's The Chosen
Horace once stated that "adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous
circumstances would have lain dormant." His assertion highlights how adversity can help one's
character development and it can bring out one's hidden talents. Those who go through life without
having any adversities will not understand the problems of those around them and the world.
Because of this, it is important to go through hardships in order to understand, manage, and solve
them. When one faces adversities, one's true character and strength is uncovered. One will
eventually face adversities: financial/political hardships, misfortunes, or disasters. They are
inevitable and when they occur, one has to figure out solutions and ways to overcome ... Show more

Many talented people come from comfortable situations. Sometimes struggle can expose
weaknesses in character and can bring out deep character flaws that would have been hidden. For
instance, many who have had traumatizing childhoods often turn out for the worse in the future.
These people turn to illegal drugs, abuse, or begin to develop mental illnesses. However, although
this is true, a majority of these people eventually get their lives back on track. Beloved actor, Robert
Downey Jr., was once a drug addict. At the age of six his dad allowed him to try marijuana, which
created an emotional bond between the two. This led to Downey Jr. becoming a daily drinker. As a
rising star, Downey Jr. was arrested many times for drug offences and was in and out of jail. As a
result, his career could no longer progress forward because many filmmakers would not hire the
addict. The turning point of his drug–reliant life was when Susan Downey, his wife, threatened him
with an ultimatum. In addition to threats of ending the marriage, Downey Jr. joined a 12–step
program, yoga, meditation, and therapy to keep him sober. Now, he is one of the most loved
superheroes, Iron Man, and his fight for a better life has inspired many. Downey Jr.'s journey not
only presents the idea of how adversity can change one's life (positively), but also that those who

Horace Mann 's The Father Of Common School
Horace Mann was a social reformer who had many contributes to the education system. In 1837, the
first ever Massachusetts state board of education was formed and Mann was chosen secretary. This
was the beginning of a progressive movement in public education, this movement was often referred
to as the Common School Movement. It began in the 1830's and social reformers pushed for a more
developed, tax–funded, secular public school system. Though Horace Mann was known as "The
Father of Common School," he faced many challenges in society during the 19h century. Mann's
ideals of a common educational experience also incorporated a model of values in education. This
ideology was based on the Protestant values that have been been filtered ... Show more content on

In addition to the difficulties that Mann's faced with religion, he also faced many other problems
with property and taxation. One of Mann's most important arguments was included in his "Tenth
Annual Report," he states that those who owned large property should pay there largest amount of
their property tax to fund the common schools. He was not trying to convince the wealthy that this
was good for business, but rather to express his anger about this situation. This situation has
continued to bother public school people to the present day. The unwillingness of the wealthy to pay
property and other taxes to fund public schools angered many. Some citizens who owned large
properties disagreed with this taxation. They mentioned if they did not have children they should not
be forced to pay an institution they would not use. Other oppositions came from those who have
raised children and refused to pay for the education of other children. Also, those who sent their
children to private schools refused to pay for an institution they did not support. Mann's answer the
all these objections was the same. He was not asking for those to support this institution but that this
institution was not for the benefit of the individual, but for the benefit of them all. Man argued that if
the state based laws on against infanticide, they should also enforce laws to support common
schooling. "The principal that a

Arts, architecture, business, and books were all a large part of society. Eighty percent of the

James Madison had each been elected as President, in a government that was beginning to build a

I was born on August 19th, 1934 in New York City, NY as Richard Raskind, the son of David
Raskind and Sadie Muriel Bishop. I was also the younger brother to my sister, Michael. My parents
both had their M.D.s, my father being an orthopedic surgeon and my mother a psychiatrist. Growing
up my mother was the more dominant one in our family. She allowed me to dress up in my sisters
clothing. As I got older, I began to become sexually confused. I confronted my mother about this
and she prescribed psychiatric therapy. Throughout most of my childhood I had wanted to be a girl.
As a young boy, however, I was a tremendous young athlete. My first tennis championship was at
the age of ten, at Sunrise Tennis Club in New York. During my years at Horace Mann High School I
was a star athlete on the football, baseball and tennis teams. I was offered a spot on the New York
Yankees, but turned them down as I went on to be a third generation graduate at Yale. I went to
medical school at the University of Rochester in New York and specialized in pediatric
ophthalmology. I finished my residency at the Manhattan Eye and Ear Hospital and then enlisted in
the Navy. In the Navy, I had become the captain of the tennis team and became an All–Navy

the supervision of Dr. Harry Benjamin. As I was taking these drugs I had decided to move to Europe

The Influence Of Horace Mann On Public Education
Off the top of your head who would you choose as MVP? Why do we spend so much time in a
classroom? You can thank Horace Mann for that. He is the vital person that came up with public
education. He should be a very notable person for everyone to know. Horace Mann has always loved
to learn. He would visit the Library to caught up on reading and homework from his district school.
He loved learning so much that he would write letters in school, on his family's farm, and at the
Library. Horace thought that the teachers should be paid for teaching students and that any person
could go to school. He thought that the teachers should be professional and not just adults who read
and teach you how to write. In school today teachers are everywhere. They make sure that we are

Horace Mann and Jane Addams both lived in the 19th century America and were university
educated reformers. However, they came of age in very different times, with Horace Mann living
during the early years of American democracy and Addams the massive industrial expansion and
immigration era of the late 19th century (Gutek, 2011). These differences created distinct
educational needs that required very different responses. In the case of Mann the need was for
quality instruction for all children and not just the children of the elite. Horace Mann used the skills
he developed as a Massachusetts politician and his post as the first secretary of the Massachusetts
Board of Education to advocate for the creation of Common Schools. These schools

Education In Horace Mann
The education system in America has a long history of struggle and change, as we have grown as a
nation we have experienced an ever–increasing rise in diversity. This diversity has caused rigidities
between groups and all stratus of society and has been a major impact in debates concerning the
educational opportunities in America. On May 4, 1796 Horace Mann was born into a poor farming
family in Franklin Massachusetts. Because his family was poor, some of his educational
opportunities were limited like many other kids in rural America during this time period. Mann's
parents could only afford to educate him eight to ten weeks out of the year. He spent most of his
childhood working to help his parents with their financial issues, and therefore his help was
impaired because of the stressful labors work. Mann was educated in a one room school house that
was often in need of repair because it lacked the funding necessary for physical maintenance in
which led to less funding for academic resources. Schooling in the late eighteenth and early
nineteenth century was often irregularly managed and unorganized. However, Mann was not only
intelligent but he was a determined individual who focused to teach himself the content and skills
needed to pursue higher education. It was this impoverished background that would serve as a
framework for Mann's work and beliefs. It would be his own experiences during his upbringing that
would fuel and motivate his dedication to improve public

Comparing The Jungle 'And How The Other Half Lives'
Society has led us to believe that what doesn't kill you actually makes you stronger. That there is no
gain without pain. That a man's blood, sweat, and tears will be all worth the struggle. The Roman
poet Horace even once said that adversity can bring out talents which in a successful environment,
would not exist. With all these assurances that difficult circumstances will meritable, it is hard to
picture Horace's statement being challenged. However, in the books, "The Jungle," and "How the
Other Half Lives," adversity clearly never led to any such benefits or talents being drawn out as
Horace mentioned. For example, within, "The Jungle," by Upton Sinclair, Jurgis, a Lithuanian
immigrant, came to America with his family for the "American Dream." Eventually, they fall into
fiscal trouble, and Jurgis' old father, Antennas, is forced to perform grueling work until he dies from
it. Additionally, Jurgis struggles to pay for his high interest house, and instead of eliciting a talent,

Overcoming Adversity: Oprah Winfrey
Talynn
Barbara De Angelis once said, "We do not develop courage by being happy everyday. We develop it
by surviving difficult times, and challenging adversity." Difficult roads WILL lead you to beautiful

determination, and good work ethic.
Compassion is a very important trait to overcome adversity. One must have compassion to
sympathize with others' misfortunes, having the knowledge of their own. A example of this is
shown, with the well known figure, Oprah Winfrey. She grew up living in dirt poor conditions, with
barely any money to support her and her family during the week. She also had to go through the
challenge of having a baby at 14, and then losing it. Some of us would have never guessed that

The Influence Of Horace Mann On Education

  • 1. The Influence Of Horace Mann On Education Horace Mann is referred to as, "the Father of the modern school," and rightly so.1 He is responsible for the public school system we know today. 1 While head of the State Board of Education, in Massachusetts, Mann made his mark on the United States of America. 1 He changed the education system and made history. 1 For the first time the populace recognized the need for a balanced education. 2 Everyone has value. Everyone deserves a fair chance to gain knowledge. 2 After all, "Knowledge is power." 2 Mann was also a Christian who firmly believed that all men are created equal and thus should be equal in the education system. 2 When Mann talked about the value he meant that education is the most valuable resource available to the human race. 2 Everyone has the right to education, and the quality of that education should not be based on who your parents are or where you're from. 2 A person's value is given to the by God above, not by their social standing. 2 No one should be denied a quality education. I completely agree with Mann. Who are we, as fellow humans, to deem some unworthy because of skin color, sex, culture, or social standing? ... Take history, for example, if we do not know history, we are bound to repeat it. We must learn from past mistakes to ensure a much brighter future. As Thomas Jefferson once said, "... that knowledge is power, that knowledge is safety, and that knowledge is happiness." 3 Mann stood for these principles and so do ... The Influence Of Adversity: The Roman Poet Helen Keller Every individual comes across difficult moments numerous times on a daily basis; however, it takes severe hardship to influence their character. The roman poet Horace claimed "Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant." The concept of adversity entitles the difficulties one endures throughout their lifetime and how the individual becomes a more well–rounded person towards the end of their difficult journeys.YOU NEED TO ADD MORE HERE FOR THE INTRO Helen Keller was a deaf, dumb and blind lady. He taught himself. The library was his home away from home. He practically lived there. Horace would read stories beyond his wildest dreams and all the facts and information he needed. He loved them. Horace was hooked. Since he was born into poverty he wanted to turn his life around. Horace was determined to make sure everyone gets the education that he would have liked, he wanted to help. Early life Horace was born May 4, 1796, he had no education. So he taught himself all the basic subjects. He went to the library a lot. It was his favorite place. It was like he couldn't read enough. He grew up fast and by the time he was twenty he was admitted into the sophomore class at Brown University. It was a spectacular experience for him because he never really had an education. At that university he took interest in politics and education. Upon graduation Horace gave a speech about the advancement of the human race through education and how it would help the human race. He believed that if he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He worked there from 1827 to 1833. In 1835 he worked with the massachusetts senate for two more years. He spent most of his time aiming at improving infrastructure like railroads and canals. While Mann served in the Senate the Massachusetts educational system was suffering with the quality of education deteriorating. So in 1837 the state opened up the first board of education, Mann was the secretary. In 1838 Mann started a weekly journal, it was about education. It was for teachers and anybody who would listen. Horace Mann Research Paper Final Exam Quynh Nguyen Azusa Pacific University Final Exam Significant individuals, executive emphases, legislative act, or court decisions to America's education system: Horace Mann (1796– 1859) Horace Mann was one of the most influential reformers in the history of American education. He was responsible for the Common School Movement, which was to ensure that every child receive free basic education funded by local taxes. Compulsory schooling was the preeminent force behind the need for school psychological services, which reciprocally influenced child study and clinical psychology. John Dewey (1859– 1952) Being regarded as father of progressive education, John Dewey's most valuable contribution lied in the promotion of practical approach to education. His progressive education method underlined the importance of experience in learning, which was contradictory to the earlier days' traditional authoritarian and rote learning educational approach. John Dewey believed in democracy in education, suggesting a learn process by participating and doing. His educational approach also put an emphasis on the development of relevant and practical life skills for students. Although his ideas were often misinterpreted and distorted, his educational philosophy was truly significant to today's education reform. Additionally, the influence of Dewey's progressive education and the rise of intelligence testing had served as cornerstone for educational psychology profession to develop. Brown vs. Board of Education (1954) This U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education was a landmark case regarding the issue of segregation in public schools. • 9. Horace Mann 's Concept For Equality Equality of Opportunity is the idea that all persons in a society are given equal opportunities to achieve educational and financial equality by having the chance to enter any occupation or social class. Schools play a paramount role in providing equality of opportunity as they are responsible for its implementation. Many issues exist for schools to provide equality of education due mostly to a family's economic condition. Contributory factors such as a student's cultural background, which test model is implemented at a given school, discrimination in the labor market that disrupts the achievement of equality of opportunity, all affect the school's ability to implement equality of opportunity. Another important factor is the inequality between schools that contribute to the inequality of opportunity. Horace Mann was an early 18th century politician and a visionary in the area of education reform. He is credited as the person responsible promoting the belief that education not only be free, but should be available to all. Horace Mann's concept for equality in education ensures "that everyone receives an education that will allow them to compete for wealth on equal terms." (Spring, 2014 p. 58.) Considering that school is the foundation on which a person's future is laid, one can assume that without a solid foundation in education, a person is much more likely to end up on the bottom of the working class earnings scale. • 11. Education Vs Horace Mann From the dawn of time, education has been the past's greatest utility in survival. Through learning, skills that have been passed down from the errors of others, communities were able to learn and grow with each other. Simple public education systems began to pop up to educate the youth and the curious, and ever since the first school systems began there has been room for improvement. The largest reforms of the educational system began at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Primarily, both Geoffrey Canada and Horace Mann share similar views on school tuition, and believe that college education should be tuition–free and available to the entire general public. In Horace Mann's "Communist Manifesto", he writes about the 10 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This would be a large loss of income for the banks and private industries, however it would mean that millions would be free of student loan debt, and many hundreds of millions more in the future. Also similar to Horace Mann, Geoffrey's platform would appeal to the lower class citizens and "recognize poverty as the key obstacle to learning" (). The ideas of Horace Mann state that there is a constant class struggle between the lower and the upper classes, and that class struggles are the cause for all conflicts in society (). Geoffrey Canada plans to merge the gap between these two classes when it comes to education. Essentially, by advocating for free school tuition, she is also advocating for a platform in which the poorest children in class would be able to achieve the same level of education as the child whose parent brings home a six figure salary. The second issue upon which Horace Mann and Geoffrey Canada both agree upon is the expunging of Standardised Testing and High Risk test taking. Horace Mann in the "Communist Manifesto" points out that tax–funded, government run school systems control the information taught. He later writes that the tuition free educational system would bring an end to the "government force–tax funded schools", and he later says that the justification for tax–funded school systems is "to train the young to work for the communal debt system" (). • 13. Compare And Contrast Horace Manon And Horace Mann The history of early education in America is fascinating and complex. Looking back we see many figures that supported and advocated for the right of education. However, this reflection is about two significant men that contribute greatly for the future of the U.S education, Thomas Jefferson and Horace Mann. Thomas Jefferson was the first man to advocate for American civic education. As a political figure, he worked diligently to create an educated republic. On the other hand, Horace Mann is considered the leader of the common school movement. Mann worked as secretary of the board of education, and his policies in education shaped the U.S education. Thomas Jefferson was born in Virginia in a economic affluent family, and received a strong education since young age. Therefore Jefferson was a well educated man, spoke many languages, was an avid reader an thinker, studied law, and boasted great interests in political science, philosophy, religion, logic, architecture, and many other subjects. In contrast, Horace Mann had a simple up bring, born in Massachusetts he came from a farmer family, and he learned from a young age the value of work and education. Horace Mann earlier education was weak since he lived in a small town with moderate resource. Nevertheless, as an devoted student he used the town library to increase his knowledge. Moreover, as an industrious young man, he study hard to be accepted at the Brown college. Jefferson lived from 1743–1826, in a time where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Horace Mann Research Paper Science has accomplished many great things. It's explained melting ice caps, it's saved lives, and it's even literally been able to create black holes in a lab, but it never the less has failed the "modern" education system on a spectacular level time and time again. One of the biggest surprises in why this system is so "modern" is because its designer, Horace Mann, developed it in 1873 based similarly to factories built during the Industrial Revolution (Einsemann 259). While Mann was designing this system, he founded and edited The Common School Journal. Targeting the public schools and their issues, he made six main principles. These principles were; "The public should no longer remain ignorant, that such education should be paid for, controlled, and sustained by and interested public, that this education will be best provided in schools that embrace children from a variety of backgrounds, that this education must be non–sectarian, that this education must be taught by the spirit, methods, and discipline of a free society, and that education should be provided by well–trained, professional teachers. Mann worked for more and better equipped school houses, longer school years (until 16 years old), higher pay for teachers, and a wider curriculum" (Mann XXIV). ... The Influence of Horace Mann on Educational Reform Essay The Influence of Horace Mann on Educational Reform Terri Schryer St. Petersburg College EDF 3660 Fall 2011 Abstract This paper discusses the influence of Horace Mann on the issue of education of the masses, evident in his dedication to improving the quality of education through the process of improving teacher education, increasing available funding, and standardizing the quality of educational experience provided to its students. It addresses specifically the areas presented in several of Mann's Annual Reports published during his tenure including the areas of school buildings, moral values, school discipline, and the quality of teachers. When a teacher utilized cruel punishment, he felt that the child's fear rendered them unable to learn from that teacher. "Moreover, if the teacher is to control the moral, social, and intellectual development of the child, se must know the child, that is, have access to the child's inner self." (Tozer, Senese, and Violas 71) While this appears very philanthropic at face value, Mann's primary concern is not the welfare of the individual child, but the condition of the society produced by the educational process. He stresses that self–discipline leads to the ability to self–govern; this leads to law abiding, productive and rational citizens. The Quality of Teachers Normal Schools Mann's First Annual report noted that teachers were not adequately prepared to appropriately teach their students and maintain decorum conducive to learning. He championed the cause for normal schools which would establish norms for teaching through standardizing curriculum, classroom structure and methods of teaching. Academically, the teachers' training was limited to the subjects taught at the common schools. Teachers as Role Models Mann also emphasized that teachers were moral role models for their students, and–as such–they were held accountable for their behavior both in and out of the schoolroom. This practice was considered to be an invasion of the teachers' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Horace Mann Curriculum Designing Curriculum for a LMS When Horace Mann came up with the idea of educating the masses, he did so with the thought that education would elevate the poor and level the playing field in society. Education to Horace Mann would close the divide between the have and have nots. To Mann, (Baldolato 2002), acquiring practical knowledge was in fact acquiring power. An educated person in Mann's view would be in charge of his own destiny, no longer a "slave" to the status quo. Today Mann's views are still considered practical; however, many variables, dynamics, and unseen notions counteract his idea of equity in education. • 21. Horace Mann Analysis Horace Mann, known as the "father of American public education", wrote the policy document Report of the Massachusetts Board of Education, that claims Massachusetts's school education is becoming unequal among the citizens. Mann develops his argument by using European and American values of men, and how society functions with men that have been treated as equals. Mann's purpose was to discuss the problems in Massachusetts's education system in order to inform his audience and persuade a change. Mann's audience assumes an audience that would be government workers or officials because of his message of changing the education system. I agree with Horace Mann, education is vital in society and determines how it functions. If certain groups of people do not receive equal education than others, then society will change and more poverty, unemployment, and more inequality will increase. The President of Bard College, Leon Botstein, wrote the opinion piece Let Teenagers Try Adulthood (1999), argues that American high schools should be abolished. Botstein uses school cliques and brain development to develop the argument. The author's purpose was to argue that high school are dangerous to kids mental health and the school system should be modified in order to keep children safe from wrong ideas that are often present in high schools. Horace Mann's famous quote on education can be found in the Twelve annual report of 1848. His take on education is very different than the puritanical belief system which is based on teaching an individual based on the word of the Bible in order to maintain social stability. Horace Mann broke the chains of the puritan's belief system that was controlling society by means of religion and gave each individual the basic human right for an equal opportunity education; for he demonstrates his strong believe in part of his quote, "is the great equalizer of the conditions of men". ... Although modern education in America has strayed from the original principles Horace Mann established during the creation of the common school, his multitude of contributions towards American public education marks him as worthy of this distinction. Horace Mann was born May 4th, 1796 in Franklin, Massachusetts. Franklin was a small town with a strong religious community and, consequently, much of Mann's early education on morality was derived from sermons at the meetinghouse, although he frequently disagreed with the teachings of Pastor Nathaniel Emmons. Formal schooling in Franklin consisted of 6–7 weeks out of the year of substandard instruction, held in a one–room schoolhouse; Mann was dissatisfied with this two– prong approach to education and only thrived academically due to his devotion to teach himself. Instead of continuing life on the farm, Mann decided to seek higher education away from his home and family. After a series of strenuous admission exams, he entered Brown University with sophomore standing. However, the education provided by Brown University only taught Horace Mann how to excel in form and not thought; both his essays and arguments were incredibly well– crafted but lacked substance and hard facts. The Horace Mann Era School in the early days Prior to the first and second Industrial Revolutions, education opportunities in the 13 colonies during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries varied considerably depending on one's location, race, gender, and social class. Basic education in literacy and numeracy was widely available, especially to white males residing in the northern and middle colonies, and the literacy rate was relatively high among these people. Educational opportunities were much sparser in the rural South. Education in the United States had long been a local affair, with schools governed by locally elected school boards. Public education was common in New England, although it was often class–based with the working class receiving few benefits. Instruction and curriculum were all locally determined, and teachers were expected to meet rigorous demands of strict moral behavior. Schools taught religious values and applied Calvinist philosophies of discipline, which included corporal punishment and public humiliation. He is best remembered for his poetic works The Odes, Satires, Epistles and the Episodes. His works, which were mostly in Latin, have been translated severally since they were first published more than 2000 years ago. The Odes, which are now mostly referred to as the Odes of Horace, have been used widely for academic as well as recreational purposes. In total, Horace wrote 103 Odes which he arranged in four books. The first three books preceded publication, coming out around 23 BC, while the fourth Ode was published 10 years later, around 13 BC. In these Odes, he covers varying topics with the topics of love and friendship, parties and wines as well as birthdays particularly coming on strong. Horace's use of satire throughout the Odes is well covered, and so is the use of different meters for each book and even poem. These diverse meters used by Horace were borrowed from lyric poets from Greece. In the Odes, Horace actually characterizes himself as the heir to the Greek lyric poets of the Generation past. Despite the heavy borrowing from the Greek poets, he still manages to display a unique and original sense of originality in the Odes. Through the Odes, Horace introduces the reader to his everyday life and by sharing his personal experiences, he familiarizes a reader with the sophisticated side of the Roman Empire. Mann explains how education can be improved or even perfected not only in the state of Massachusetts but all across the nation. Mann got most of his ideas on how an ideal education system should be made up by studying how Persian school systems created their curriculum in all of their public schools. Mann believes that these ideals are how the Massachusetts school system should be ran (110–119). However, is it possible for an education system to become outdated? Mann was a prominent figure in politics for many years and eventually served on the Massachusetts Board of Education for several years. In that time Mann came to believe that education should be based around physical, intellectual, political, moral, and religious educations. Mann got most of his ideas from how schools in the Persian taught these different types of education. • 55. The Odess Of Horace : Summary : The Odes Of Horace The Odes of Horace – Summary Horace, whose full name in Latin is Quintus Horatius Flaccus, was a Roman lyric poet. Throughout the framework of the odes, Horace ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He traveled to France for five years, where he learned to appreciate the French culture, though he was considered to be uncultured. "Jefferson gradually assumed leadership of the Republicans, who sympathized with the revolutionary cause in France" (Freidel, 2006). This caused a rift between the Republicans and the Democrats. "As a reluctant candidate for President in 1796, Jefferson came within three votes of election" (Freidel, 2006). According to the Constitution, this made Jefferson the Vice President. He would visit the Library to caught up on reading and homework from his district school. He loved learning so much that he would write letters in school, on his family's farm, and at the Library. Horace thought that the teachers should be paid for teaching students and that any person could go to school. He thought that the teachers should be professional and not just adults who read and teach you how to write. In school today teachers are everywhere. However, they came of age in very different times, with Horace Mann living during the early years of American democracy and Addams the massive industrial expansion and immigration era of the late 19th century (Gutek, 2011). These differences created distinct educational needs that required very different responses. • 72. Education In Horace Mann The education system in America has a long history of struggle and change, as we have grown as a nation we have experienced an ever–increasing rise in diversity. This diversity has caused rigidities between groups and all stratus of society and has been a major impact in debates concerning the educational opportunities in America. On May 4, 1796 Horace Mann was born into a poor farming family in Franklin Massachusetts. Because his family was poor, some of his educational opportunities were limited like many other kids in rural America during this time period. Mann's parents could only afford to educate him eight to ten weeks out of the year. He spent most of his childhood working to help his parents with their financial issues, and therefore his help was impaired because of the stressful labors work. Mann was educated in a one room school house that was often in need of repair because it lacked the funding necessary for physical maintenance in which led to less funding for academic resources. Schooling in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was often irregularly managed and unorganized. However, Mann was not only intelligent but he was a determined individual who focused to teach himself the content and skills needed to pursue higher education. It was this impoverished background that would serve as a framework for Mann's work and beliefs. It would be his own experiences during his upbringing that would fuel and motivate his dedication to improve public ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That a man's blood, sweat, and tears will be all worth the struggle. The Roman poet Horace even once said that adversity can bring out talents which in a successful environment, would not exist. With all these assurances that difficult circumstances will meritable, it is hard to picture Horace's statement being challenged. However, in the books, "The Jungle," and "How the Other Half Lives," adversity clearly never led to any such benefits or talents being drawn out as Horace mentioned. For example, within, "The Jungle," by Upton Sinclair, Jurgis, a Lithuanian immigrant, came to America with his family for the "American Dream." Eventually, they fall into fiscal trouble, and Jurgis' old father, Antennas, is forced to perform grueling work until he dies from it. Additionally, Jurgis struggles to pay for his high interest house, and instead of eliciting a talent, Jurgis elicits harsh resentment for his family.
