From what I could tell this book teaches about many things about Mexico such as corruption in the
church, abuse of power of the wealthy, and how people view the afterlife. It also shows historical
background in terms with the "Revolution" mentioned near the end of the book, and how power

Father continues to forgive the Paramo family even though they commit many evils deeds (such as

Looking at Fulgor Sedano, the reason he is corrupt is because he knows of the Paramo family's
crimes/sins but chooses to let them be because they make him more money. It shows he has a lack of

Through bloody feuding, Mexico's main criminal insurgencies, including: The Knight Templar, Los
Zetas, Sinaloa Cartel, and The Gulf Cartel, divide the country into gang territories. Since 2006,
Mexico 's powerful drug–trafficking organizations have committed more than 60,000 drug–related
homicides, including the mass murder of innocent civilians. Due to civilian massacre increase,
kidnappings and extortion have become a mundane event. In February 2014, the Mexican
government confirmed that 26,000 people still remain "disappeared." From 2007 to 2011, nearly
70% of guns recovered from these Mexican criminal activities originated from the United States. In

Corruption And Voter Fraud : Mexico Is Not A Democracy?
Democracy can be defined as people having the right to vote and those elected into government are
chosen through a free and fair election process. Mexico was able to briefly become a democracy
when the 71–year rule of the PRI came to an end in a transparent 2000 presidential election. The
lack of voter fraud evidence made it clear that it was one of the fairest elections to date for Mexico.
During the PRI power Mexico was a hybrid regime. It was disguised as a democracy that only
favored those who were higher up and gave not voting power to the citizens. Killings and voter
fraud make it clear that Mexico was not a democracy. In 2012 when the PRI took over again
allegations of corruption and voter right violations came up again and taking Mexico back years. So,
for this reason Mexico is not a democracy yet.
In an authoritarian regime the power is concentrated in the authority of the country and the citizens
are subjected to the rules that the authority decides to impose and they are not given the right to
vote. Mexico has characteristics of an authoritarian government, but there is a façade that it's a
democracy. Years ago there were elections and political activity that made it seem like citizens were
really participating in a democracy. This made Mexico a hybrid regime. For 71 years the Partido
Revolucionaro Institucional (PRI) governed Mexico uninterrupted. During this time the president
had extensive political power over the other government branches and Mexican states.

Corruption In Democracy
The 0.40 increase in CPI from 2000 to 2001 should be compared to a similar change; from 2008 to
2009, the CPI dropped from 3.6 to 3.3. The only equivalent change in the time period of these
surveys would be 2014 to 2015, where the CPI dropped from 3.5 to 3.1, but Corporación
Latinobarómetro does not include a 2014 survey, which makes it impossible to find equal
measurements. Between 2004 and 2005, preference for democracy increased from 54% to 59%,
despite an increase in corruption. Preference for authoritarianism decreased from 16% to 13% and
ambivalence about regime type decreased from 36% to 24%. These results show that even when
there is an increase in corruption, there is not a decrease in preference for a democratic regime.

Contemporary research shows that democracy and corruption are inherently contradictory, so the
presence of corruption should hurt faith in a healthy democracy. Countries with higher rates of
corruption see less political participation through voting (Stockemer, LaMontagne and Scruggs 83).
The rest of this paper will examine why the results of this research contradict scholarly knowledge
on the subject.
Part of the reason the results were unexpected is that the Latinobarómetro surveys were not ideal for
this research. The survey asked respondents to choose the statement they most agreed with. The

circumstances, an authoritarian government can be preferable to a democratic one," "For people like
me, it does not matter whether we have a democratic or non–democratic regime," "Don't Know,"
and "No Answer/Refused." These statements are not mutually exclusive which can cause confusion

subjective to an individual's perception of what democracy is or should be. In fact, Mexican voters
are split on what the purpose of democracy is. Approximately 33% consider the main goal of
democracy to be facilitating elections, 31% consider the main purpose of democracy to be
combatting crime, and the remaining citizens are mixed on their view.

Mexico is the eleventh most populated country in the world with a $2.2 trillion economy (CIA,
2017). It is also an extremely popular tourist destination for Americans and Europeans alike.
Moreover, its people have had the highest average annual hours worked in the world every year for
the last three years (OECD, 2017). Despite this, their unemployment rate is estimated to be 3.6%
and their underemployment at 25% (CIA, 2017). I am going to expand on this country's issues with
corruption, organized crime, violence, the economy, and how I assess their future will affects us here
in the United States.
Like many countries in turmoil, corruption is and has been a big part of Mexico's political scene,
especially with domestic criminal organizations such as the drug cartels. Mexico's politicians have
not only stolen public funds but they have also made complicit agreements with multiple drug
cartels. "Mexico ranks No. 123 in Transparency International's 2016 Corruption Perception Index,
25 spots lower than the year before. Analysts say it's unclear whether corruption has gotten worse or
has merely become more visible because of transparency laws, journalists increasingly uncovering
graft and social media exposing politicians' excesses" (Agren, 2017). In recent years there have been
multiple Mexican politicians prosecuted and arrested due to their illegal dealings but the cycle just
continues with their successors. Take Javier Duarte for example, who was the governor of Veracruz
State from 2010 to 2016 and managed to steal $3 billion from public funds meanwhile violence
