Theme Of Existentialism In As You Like It
The play to be reviewed is As You Like It, written by William Shakespeare. The prevailing
philosophy throughout the play is existentialism. What is existentialism? Existentialism can be
defined through its ontology. Ontology is the study of the nature of reality and is also called the
theory of reality. The ontology of existentialism can be discussed in under concepts of man and
existence. In the concept of man, existentialists believe that man is not bound by any antecedent

As quoted from Marcel, 'to exist' means not just to be 'present to my own aware–ness' but also to be
a manifest being. "I exist–that is as much to say: I have something to make myself known and
recognized both by others and by myself". In conclusion, existentialism is not about man as an
absolute being but rather a relative and subjective one. As long as a man exists, there is always a
room for him to revise and correct himself and has a future that is not determined by his innate
nature, birthright, etc. The most important values on existentialism are freedom of choice and
individuality. As You Like It is a play written by William Shakespeare and is classified as "marriage
comedy" together with the plays Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream. The list of main
characters includes Duke Frederick: the usurper of the throne of Duke Senior which is also his
brother; Celia (aka Aliena): the daughter of Duke Frederick; Rosalind (aka Ganymede): the daughter
of Duke Senior; Touchstone: the court's clown; Sons of the late Sir Rowland de Boys (of decreasing
age): Oliver, Jaques, Orlando; Adam: a loyal servant to Sir Rowland and his sons; Amiens and
Jaques: Lords that are banished with Duke Senior; Corin and Silvius: Sheperds in the forest of

Analysis Of ' You Or Someone Like You '
Saving Anne Rosenbaum's Marriage Failing is a form of failure or a fault of individuals; it is also a
weakness of a person's ability of doing something. In the novel, "You or Someone like You",
Chandler Burr writes how a marriage that has a normal and simple life goes through hard times and
sometimes, even reaches the point to make an important decision about choosing the success in life
or the most desirable thing in each couple's life: marriage. However, Howard Rosenbaum's friends
refer his wife, Anne Rosenbaum, to start her own book club; Anne's book club becomes Hollywood
A–lister; and Anne sacrifices everything she has achieved in life to save her marriage. Fame,
fortune, and newfound friendships are not bad to have in every one's life but because of these things,
marriage is the main thing that is at risk when someone has those things in life. One's has to choose
either marriage or success that has achieved in life. First, Howard Rosenbaum's friends refer his
wife, Anne Rosenbaum, to start her own book club because when they are having a meeting, Denise
and Stacey thinks that Anne should start her own club while her husband, Howard, is busy as a
studio executive of the Random House.
At our second meeting, Denise and Consuela and I set up in the garden. Drinks and ice on a small
table before the tall Argentine grass, sparkling glass lined up, linen napkins for the food, which
Consuela pass. When we're done the three of us step back and look it over. Yes, perfect.

Body Paragraph Topic Sentence – Shakespeare's take on masculinity. In As You Like It, it seems that
Shakespeare believes that it is a man's natural instinct to romanticize women. While Celia is reading
Orlando's poem to Rosalind, all of the women mentioned had something disastrous happen to them.
(Act 3 Scene 2 Lines 143 through 156) Tie to the topic sentence. Another thing a man needs to be is
tough. When Rosalind, as Ganymede, is talking to Oliver, Orlando's brother, she faints at the sight
on Orlando's blood on the handkerchief. In response, Oliver tells "him" that he needs to act more
like a man. (Act 4 Scene 3 Lines 12) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shakespeare believes that women are more prone to crying and that they are the weaker gender.
When Rosalind is talking to Aliena, she says "I could find in my heart to disgrace my man's apparel
and to cry like a woman, but I must comfort the weaker vessel, as doublet and hose ought to show
itself courageous to petticoat". (2.4.4–8) In the past, it was believed that because of the fact that
women give birth, they are the fairer sex. Most people believed that women could not protect
themselves, and that they needed courageous men to protect them. Shakespeare also portrays
women in a stereotypical manner, in the sense that it was believed that women normally rave over
males, making them seem foolish. In Scene 3 Act 2, Rosalind is giddy over Orlando, perpetuating
the stereotype that woman go crazy over guys. (3.2.198–208) Tie to the topic sentence. Another
stereotype that Shakespeare brings up is the stereotype that women don't think before they speak,
and that they talk all the time. Rosalind says in Act 3 Scene 2 "Do you not know I am a woman?
When I think, I must speak". This was a common view, resulting in woman always being told that
they were nagging.

As You Like It Belonging Essay
ENGLISH ADVANCED BELONGING ESSAY
An individual's sense of belonging can be shaped by numerous elements of their interactions with
other people and places. To obtain a true sense of belonging, these elements must work to support
and accept the individual in their discovery of a fulfilled and contented existence. These essential
concepts of belonging are displayed within William Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It, Mark
Twain's novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A.B. Patterson's poem Clancy of the
Overflow. Through the composers' use of dramatic, language, poetic and literary techniques, we are
able to explore the various aspects and ideas which lead to a deep sense of belonging.
One of the fundamental concepts of belonging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Shakespeare uses this couple to further satirise the Petrarchan tradition of love and display
that although pure unadulterated love can lead to a sense of belonging, so can a connection of a less
noble manner; thus highlighting the numerous avenues of belonging. Through the dialogue "as a
walled town is more worthier than a village... the forehead of a married man more honourable than
the bare brow of a bachelor" and "I do desire with all my heart... to be a woman of the world",
Shakespeare contrasts the affection of Touchstone and Audrey and that of Orlando and Rosalind and
emphasises the different levels of belonging. This contrast between the morals and ethics of
relationships reflects how true love, however also materialistic love establishes a deep sense of
belonging and builds understanding between the individuals involved.
Another key aspect of belonging is the relationship to a place or setting. In As You Like It, the two
symbolic settings that the characters inhabit are vastly juxtaposed, as we see the natural essence of
the Forest of Arden contrasted with the supposedly civilised Courts of Duke Fredrick. Shakespeare's
use of contrast, imagery and dialogue reflects the different states of belonging which the courts and
Forest of Arden represent. The use of hyperbole by Orlando in Act 1 when he asks Oliver "Shall I
keep your pigs and eat husks with them" emphasises the extent of which Orlando does

As You Like It by William Shakespeare
In William Shakespeare's play, As You Like It, the protagonist, Rosalind, disguises herself as a boy
for the majority of the play. Rosalind is used by Shakespeare to help divulge a portion of
Shakespeare's personal life and also show flaws in the unique stereotypes that are expected for boys
and girls. Shakespeare's main use for Rosalind was to illustrate the unique features and
characteristics that boys and girls are expected to have and how easily they can be overlooked. Even
though boys and girls are both equal human beings, it was not thought to be this way in
Shakespeare's time. Rosalind wanted to do more than what a girl could do, and thus, she disguised
herself and effectively "became" a man. However, Shakespeare also uses Rosalind to help divulge
some secrets that may have been present in Shakespeare's personal life, such as an imposter
Shakespeare.
Gender discrimination and stereotypes have been around since the dawn of time. Throughout the
centuries, it has always been believed that women should be confined to household and non–
strenuous jobs such as: doing the housekeeping, raising children, tending to her husband's every
need, and teaching at schools. Gender discrimination is first illustrated in the Bible through 1st
Timothy 2:12 by saying, "I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over man; rather,
she is to remain quiet" and also in Genesis 3:16, "To the woman he said, 'I will surely multiply your

The, Do You Like Girls Or Boys?
It seems that each time I come out to someone as transgender it is only a matter of time until they
ask the question. Sometimes it's immediate and other times it takes a few days, but it always follows
the same pattern. They look at me. Then down. They'll open their mouth to ask. Then fall silent. An
awkward aura will weigh down the air between us, choking my breath because I already know what
they want to ask. I already know the information they are prioritizing. I wait to be freed from the
hesitant anticipation.
"So, do you like girls or boys?"
I always respond the same way. I tell them that question is inappropriate, too narrow, that my gender
doesn't change my sexuality, and it's personal. All valid critiques, but I never actually ... Show more

I can still find a person attractive, but in the same way one may find a painting or statue attractive,
and I still have a sex drive, it just doesn't ever have a target, and despite it all, I still want a
relationship. How I view a relationship, can be considered quite separated from its traditional
definition. Really I just want a companion, someone to joke with, and everything else we figure out
along the way. I simply desire a deep emotional connection and if that just means a relationship that
some else would just call a very close friendship that's fine. I like to think in that sense, it's like any
other relationship, it would require communication and work, but not anymore than my heterosexual
counter parts. I just lack that push.
That's why that question is so hard to answer. It be easy to say "none of the above" and be done, but
really, I just have all the options and no guidance. I could like a girl, a boy, or an individual outside
that binary, but I don't "like" in the way the person asking means, or in the way person asking likes.
I don't "like" in the same way a movie hero "likes" the damsel in distress. I'm closer to the robot
sidekick searching for a way to connect.
My ability to even investigate this part of myself is very new though. When I began hormone

repentant expression, but the panic he radiated was making it extra challenging.
"Paine... I'm," she bit down on the insides of her cheeks, "sorry. I really––" Snort. "Am. I didn't

"No you're not." An accusatory finger shot down at her. "Look at you! You find this hilarious." He

The Portrayal Analysis Of Rosalind's As You Like It
After considering all the definitions available from The Oxford English Dictionary Online of the
word giddy chosen from the passage, As You Like It Act 3 Scene 3, lines 281–328, I had concluded
that Definition 3 A deemed to be the most relevant to the passage. The description of "attributes and
actions" and "elated to thoughtlessness" {OED online, 2017) seems rather fitting to the character of
Rosalind, and almost key, for Rosalind a petite but noble, wise woman, with a profound knowledge
of all the intricacies of the heart, and indeed how to manipulate these emotions and stir within others
foolishness. Danson Brown suggests "All Rosalind's speeches should be played 'giddily' as she is
stylistically varied" he continues that "Rosalind's adopts registers that change in mood from teasing
to 'holiday humour'" (Danson Brown, 2015 p.56) However the quote "I thank God I am not a
woman, to be touched with so many giddy offences as he hath generally taxed their whole sex
withal. (Rosalind in As You Like It, 3.2.335–38) in itself is quite 'giddy' 'light–headed, frivolous,
flighty' (OED online, 2017) as there is a verbal irony it involves a discrepancy between what is said
and what is really meant, as in its crude form, sarcasm. The themes of the entire play as well as this
chosen passage also fit around the definition of giddy aptly the delights of love and the malleability
of the human experience, and the motif of artifice, 'being easily carried away by excitement' (OED

You Hit Like A Woman
"You hit like a girl"! This a prejudice statement towards women, degrading their strength against
men. When you heard this dictum, you were almost certainly a young child. This is an example of
how even at a young age, with no education about women's rights, women are still looked at as
inferior to men. The view of a woman in America is tainted with preconceptions of emotional
instability and the image to be perfect. However throughout the decades, the evolution of women in
America, has brought change to society tremendously. In the aftermath of WWII, women begin to
over throw the household chore image, and began to accomplish goals, work, and promote gender
equality. Although their hard work and dedication towards the feminist movement bred results,
unfortunately, inequality still presents in some areas. Women are viewed inferior in their workplace
and when opportunities arise. Not only that, but women are taken advantage of because they are

According to Heidegger, man can only reflect his real self to his self. Man cannot be what he is not.
He can be what he is already: his existence. He further says that humans were temporal beings. It
finds itself finite because he was bound in time and the space he was experiencing. And when man
finds itself finite, his existence would be doomed. But by his free will, he can overcome these
threats to his existence. For Heidegger, on the one hand man is creator of his own experience and on
the other hand, he is subject of his experience. If man accepts the responsibility for developing his
own being then he has true human aspects in his personality. In the concept of existence,
existentialists differentiate the verb "to exist" from the verb "to live". For them, existence means a
full, self conscious, responsible and growing life. Existentialists divided the concept of existence
between authentic existence, and inauthentic existence. A man can live in an unauthentic existence
by being a member of a group that is absorbed only in things and details of everyday life. But a man
can live in an authentic existence by living through his choices. As quoted from Marcel, 'to exist'
means not just to be 'present to my own aware–ness'

Theme Of Disguise In As You Like It
"The use of disguise is an old stratagem in literature as well as in life. Achilles lived for a time
undisturbed with his love because he was disguised as a maiden. Apollo in the stress of battle
appeared in the guise of a common soldier and encouraged his favourite hero. Odysseus returned
from his wanderings in the shape of a beggar in order that he might not be recognized at home."
(Freeburg 1) The notion of disguise has been known from the ancient drama, continuing its journey
through all important periods of time. It attained the most exquisite resurrection in the Renaissance
England being used by the erstwhile biggest playwrights.
It has been generally known that Elizabethan drama reached its climax in Shakespeare's work.
Shakespeare himself is the creator of numerous dramatic arts and skills which made typical features
of his work.
Shakespeare too used the concept of disguise in a number of his plays. It is not only used as an
escape from the characters' personalities but also it gives birth to serious comic effects. In As You

Similar to those characters, in the film Some Like it Hot we encounter Joe and Jerry who are best

which is where they reside due to them witnessing a gang–related problem they need to leave as
soon as they can in order for the police and the gang not to get them. Both parties need to hide from
an authority figure, Rosalind and Celia need to hide from Duke Frederick while Joe and Jerry need
to hide from the Police. Correspondingly both parties decide to disguise themselves as the opposite
sex. Rosalind dresses–up as Ganymede (man) and Celia as Aliena (women), Joe and Jerry dressed
up as Josephine and Daphne to obtain jobs in an all–girl band. Unlike Rosalind who believes women
can do anything they want without the help or approval of men, and who also believes that marriage
should only be based on love. Jerry thinks otherwise in one of the verses we can see that Jerry is
willing to do anything in order to be financially stable with or without love. Joe: "But your not a girl
you are a guy, why would a guy want to marry a guy?". Jerry: "for security". I interpreted this scene
as a form of parody towards social norms, on how men are supposed to provide for the well–being
of women and women are to be married to a man who provide security and support, whether they
are in love or not. Another similar scene that shows the parody of women wanting to marry men for
money is when Sugar Kane who is a member of the all–girls band meets a millionaire who happens

As You Like It by William Shakespeare
In the play, As you like it, Rosalind and her cousin, Celia, disguise themselves so they will be safe in
the forest, where they run away. Celia dresses up as a poor lady and Rosalind dresses up as a poor
man. In the past society has made it seem like it was impossible to act like a man or dress as one. In
the play, As you like it, Rosalind has to dress up and acts like a man to make it through the Forest of
Arden.
Rosalind's father got banned from the city and is sent to the forest by his own brother, who is the
father of Celia. Celia and Rosalind are very close and act as sisters. Duke Fredrick then tells
Rosalind that she needs to leave the city and go to the Forest of Arden as well. Celia and Rosalind
decided that they will run away before either one of them could get banned from the city. They dress
up as different people, Rosalind as Ganymede and Celia as a poor girl. They do this for their own
safety and so no one would recognize them. In the past, people had a fixed notion on how different
male and females acted. Women of upper classes were to be married to someone that their parents
have chosen, most likely with families that had just as much wealth and power. Women who were in
lower classes most likely waited to get married in their twenties and to the man of their choice. They
got married much later to save money to run a house. When a woman got married they probably
stayed at home to run their house and make sure it was suitable for their husbands. Women

Life starts upon the exit from the mother's womb. From that moment, time marches on until the
inevitable death occurs to take one once again from the world of the living. Life and death

angles. In many of his sonnets he talks about aging and how the image changes as one ages and gets
older and less attractive. The most interesting of Shakespeare's plays involving a theme of aging is

Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything" As You Like It, 2. 7. Norton 1622.
This speech clearly shows the Victorian views on aging.
Since the average lifespan was so much shorter during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries,
many people tended to get married and have children much earlier than today. Although it is
commonly believed that the young love of >Romeo and Juliet was commonplace in England at
this time, marriage registries show that many did not marry until their mid twenties (Best). This
would mean a more mature man in the role of husband. As You Like It is a play to please everybody.
So while there is happiness, there is sadness, while young there is old (Gardner 65).
During this time, England was a highly Patriarcherial society. With the exception of Queen
Elizabeth I, the head of the house was a man, the overlord was a man, and even the estates were
inherited by the firstborn son. It did not matter if there were three or four girls before a male birth;
that male would inherit (Smith 65). Therefore an aristocratic boy would be educated in Latin and
reading; a peasant would become an apprentice

Bad Relationships In Someone Like You
Causes of Bad Relationship
A bad relationship may develop without your notice. In the film 'Someone Like You', the most
obvious example is the relationship between Ray and Jane. The breakdown is not a sudden effect,
but a gradual development.
It all starts with the imbalance of giving. According to Cher Carter–Scott, dangers arises when one
person gives too little in a relationship. In the movie, Jane invests everything, including her heart,
body (sex) and future life (cohabitation). However, Ray is the opposite. All he can give is the short–
term excitement and passion. As Robert Solomon suggested, their desire mismatch leads to
coordination problem.
Their love–at–first–sight relationship also lacks a strong foundation to overcome challenges.
Applying Robert Sternberg's triangular theory of love, Ray and Jane's form of love is Romantic
Love (intimacy + passion). In their first meeting, they feel attracted to one another. Eventually
intimacy grows and they start dating. The process is filled with passion. However, Ray is not ready
for commitment. He never has a clear cut with Diane. Jane feels unsafe and uncertain as the
triangular relationship continues. The bond between Ray and Jane gets weaker day by day, such that
any quarrels can break it easily.
The key to further worsen the relationship is poor communication. Taking the case of cohabitation ...

"No you're not." An accusatory finger shot down at her. "Look at you! You find this hilarious." He

"You don't care what this means for me at all. In fact, my suffering just makes this better for you,

Never Be Like You: Teenthem For Teens
The song Never Be Like You is the teen anthem for teens today. The reason that it is the teen anthem
for teens today is because the song talks about how she's pushed away someone that loved her but
now she's realized she's made a mistake and wants him back. It's our teen anthem because it goes to
show how much teens push away things that love them not even in a romantic way. Teens push
away their parents even though all their parent is trying to do is help them be the best that they can

William Shakespeare 's As You Like It
In Shakespeare's As You Like It, there are several occasions of the characters falling in love quickly.
The idea of love at first sight is often prevalent throughout the play. It occurs in most relationships
between a lover and a mate. In every relationship, none of the characters knew truly anything about
their lover. In As You Like It by Shakespeare, the characters' love is shallow and could eventually
lead to a failed relationship. The idea of love at first sight first began with Rosalind and Orlando.
The first time they seen each other, they already had a sense of love. They meet in act 1, scene 1,
when Orlando came to the palace to wrestle Charles: a known wrestler around the palace. Line 157

Rosalind already admits that she love Orlando, and Orlando soon after admits it in act 3, scene 3
stating" Hang there, my verse, in witness of my love" (line 1) when speaking about Rosalind. They
believe that they love each other after seeing each other once, knowing little about each other: their
love is shallow, Just as Touchstone and Audrey. As soon as Act 3, scene 3 opens up, Touchstone is
already asking Phoebe is he the man for her. Then shortly afterwards he states "I will marry thee"
(line 40). Then she goes on to say "well the gods give us joy!" (Line 45). Audrey and touchstone are
already planning to get married after barely knowing each other. There loves is shallow and
Touchstone proves it when he states" I am not in the mind but I were better to be married of him
than of another, for he is not like to marry me well, and not being well married, it will be a good
excuse for me hereafter to leave my wife" (lines 86–90). He knows that it won't last. It also possibly
will not last between Silvius and phoebe, but definitely not with phoebe and Ganymede. In act 3,
scene 5, Silvius is pouring out his love for Phoebe, but phoebe is turning him down. She states "I fly
thee, for I would not injure thee" (line 9). She makes it clear that she doesn't want to be with Silvius.

William Shakespeare 's As You Like It
In "As You Like It" it can be seen that love is a life and personality altering element for each
character. Love is the main theme of this play as it can be seen that all characters are changed by
love. In this one piece by William Shakespeare, many different forms different forms of love can be
seen. There is brotherly love, love in loyalty, lust, friendship, and even the expected form of
romantic love. There are three main couples we see change and development due to their
interactions with love, Rosalind and Orlando, Silvius and Phebe, and Touchstone and Audrey. Their
recurrent interactions with love in several different forms helps to exude and deepen this main theme
of love in "As You Like It".
Rosalind and Orlando, the hero and heroine, is the first couple that can be analyzed with dissecting
the theme of love. . Rosalind beautiful and Orlando handsome, fell in love at first sight (the
traditional way). Orlando's good nature and bravery won her heart in Act 1 Scene 2. That, being too
boring for a shakespearean play, could not be all there is to their love. Therefore, following the
traditional elements of shakespeare 's, Rosalind gets banished by Duke Frederick in (i.iii.82–84),
and thus disguises herself as a man (Ganymede) and escapes with Celia, her cousin, into the forest
of Arden. All of this madness and chaos stands as a test to the love that Orlando and Rosalind share.

Examples Of Disguise In As You Like It
Shakespeare uses the idea of disguise in many of his plays. It is used as an escape from the
characters' personalities and sometimes for comic effect. In As You Like it, the disguise becomes
very comical as in the time it was written only men could act on stage. This could lead to much
confusion and comedy in the roles of those in disguise. Disguise can give the freedom to a character
to act how they like and a chance for them to show their views. It was in the 16th Century that there
became an increased sense of self consciousness and identity. This led to people creating an image
for themselves. If one can create a self, they can create many different versions of themselves each
showing a different aspect of that person. This links in very well with As You Like It because in the
play, Rosalind creates many different disguises of herself. At one point she is disguised as a boy
acting as Rosalind. Rosalind and Celia are the main focus for disguise in As You Like It. To ... Show

The perfection of disguise is thus essential to the higher purpose of the comedy. Rosalind was fair;
but after having seen her in her brilliant beauty at the court of her usurping uncle, we must be
content, as she was, to see it browned to the hue of forest exposure, and deprived of all the pretty
coquetries of personal adornment which sit so well upon her sex, and to find in her, our very selves,
the outward seeming of a somewhat overbold and soldierly young fellow, who is living, half
shepherd, half hunter, in welcomed companionship with a band of gentlemanly outlaws. Unless all
this is set very clearly and unmistakably before us by the physical and merely external appearance of
our heroine, there is an incongruity fatal to the idea of the comedy, and directly at variance with the
clearly defined intentions of its

As You Like It a Romantic Comedy
The major conventions of Shakespearean Romantic Comedy are:
The main action is about love.
The would–be lovers must overcome obstacles and misunderstandings before being united in
harmonious union. The ending frequently involves a parade of couples to the altar and a festive
mood or actual celebration (expressed in dance, song, feast, etc.) A Midsummer Night's Dream has
four such couples (not counting Pyramus and Thisbe!); As You Like It has four; Twelfth Night has
three; etc.
Frequently (but not always), it contains elements of the improbable, the fantastic, the supernatural,
or the miraculous, e.g. unbelievable coincidences, improbable scenes of recognition/lack of

Shakespeare's early romantic comedy most indebted to John Lyly is Love's Labour's Lost (c. 1588–
97), a confection set in the never–never land of Navarre where the King and his companions are
visited by the Princess of France and her ladies–in–waiting on a diplomatic mission that soon
devolves into a game of courtship. As is often the case in Shakespearean romantic comedy, the
young women are sure of who they are and whom they intend to marry; one cannot be certain that
they ever really fall in love, since they begin by knowing what they want. The young men,
conversely, fall all over themselves in their comically futile attempts to eschew romantic love in
favour of more serious pursuits. They perjure themselves, are shamed and put down, and are finally
forgiven their follies by the women. Shakespeare brilliantly portrays male discomfiture and female
self–assurance as he explores the treacherous but desirable world of sexual attraction, while the
verbal gymnastics of the play emphasize the wonder and the delicious foolishness of falling in love.
In The Taming of the Shrew (c. 1590–94), Shakespeare employs a device of multiple plotting that is
to become a standard feature of his romantic comedies. In one plot, derived from Ludovico Ariosto's
I suppositi (Supposes, as it had been translated into English by George

Essay Comparing Macbeth And As You Like It
Shakespeare's Macbeth and As You Like It have very similar themes with the characters as it shows
how the roles of life and death are significant to human existence. In Act V, Scene 5 of Macbeth,
Macbeth's poem–like monologue shines light on how life is short and each day is closer to death. In
Act II, Scene 7 of As You Like It, Jaques compares the whole life cycle to a play with different short
acts that ends with an old decrepit man that has no fight left in him. The tone and imagery of these
two monologues displayed the concept of humanity and life and death.
The tone for both excerpts is extremely mournful and somber. When talking about death, both
speakers (Macbeth and Jaques) relate to it depressingly. In Macbeth, he refers to life as ,"but a
walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no
more." Macbeth portrays life as a one–hit wonder, famous one day and never seen ever again. As
You Like It portrays life in a more secular way. In life, you go from being a fresh baby to a fading
old man; and at the end, there's nothing "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything." What
you're met with is oblivion. The sorrowful tone portrays the difficult balance of life vs. death and
how people deal with it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Macbeth brings his point to life by one simple line: "Out, out, brief candle!". Life is like a candle, lit

lover, soldier, judge, elder, and eventually death. Using specific descriptions for each "act" utilizes
the reader's comprehension on how every part of life plays into the final, inevitable part: death. The
imagery also pushes the secular reasoning of death that nothing happens when you

As You Like It and Edward Scissorhands Essay
Inherent within humanity is the need to belong, in which an individual must accept one another in
order to achieve a greater sense of connectedness and identity. This is firstly evident in
Shakespeare's As You Like It whereby the ideas of love are used to reveal how relationships are
fundamental to one's sense of belonging. Act 1 Scene 3 explores belonging and not belonging
through love and nature as it establishes the plot at the mark of separation from court and country by
Rosalind and Celia breaking the sense of belonging to place. Celia and Rosalind convey a strong
bond evident in Celia's plea to her father, Duke Frederick, to keep Rosalind at court rather than

These settings are symbolic of the lack of belonging which is felt when the natural order is
destroyed and baser natural instincts conquer positive feelings. "Now go we in content, to liberty
and not to banishment" concludes the scene with a rhyming couplet giving the scene a positive
ending through a tone of contentment that arises from a greater sense of belonging and connection
between individuals.
Similarly, the film by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands portrays deep ideas about belonging
whereby notions of acceptance and identity are illustrated through the use of filming techniques.
Love and acceptance are challenged when Peg Boggs, the Avon representative rescues Edward from
the mansion on top of the hill where he has spent his entirety. Upon Peg entering, a wide shot shows

Analysis Of ' As You Like It '
"As You Like It", is a Shakespearean comedy that is believed to have been written around the
1600's. This play holds onto many strong motifs throughout the entire play. One of the most obvious
motifs would have to be the concept of exile. Many of the characters in the play have been
intimidated away from their homes, while others left voluntarily to live in the forest of Arden. This
separation from their homes in the court aids in helping Shakespeare's major themes come alive. The
major themes evident in Act 4 Scene 3 is the malleability of humans through experience, the effects
of love, and a comparison of city life to country life. It is important to note the malleability of
human nature through an individual's life experience. According to some psychologists, "what is
built in [to humans] is this capacity to learn and change according to the world [they] find
[themselves] in" (Dweck, par. 3). This is supported in Shakespeare's play through the character of
Oliver. At his home in the court, Oliver finds himself blessed with the riches and power that his
father handed down to him. This inheritance is known as the right of primogeniture. The system in
which a father's riches and title is handed down to the eldest son, leaving the rest of the siblings with
nothing. Oliver is a petty and jealous individual who treats his younger brother Orlando as if he
were just another servant. The root of this hatred is made clear in Oliver's monologue at the end of
act one scene one, in

Not Belonging In Shakespeare's As You Like It
To belong is to have an affinity to a place or person. In this way, not belonging may be even more
important than belonging as often individuals must be alienated in order to truly accept and
understand their own identity. Such a notion is explored within the Shakespearean play, As you Like
it, written in 1603. The text clearly illustrates the way in which not belonging to people, place and
society is even more important that belonging as it allows an individual to gain a heightened
understanding of the value of belonging and identity. Not belonging to people can lead individuals
to gain a deeper understanding of the value of belonging. As seen in As You Like it, several
characters are forced to experience alienation in order to understand ... Show more content on

This idea is evident in the play as several characters who are isolated from The Court are able to
deepen their understanding of identity. Shakespeare uses the character of Duke Senior to illustrate
such an idea. The Duke is banished from the court by his younger brother and placed into exile in
the Forest of Arden. It is through this displacement into the natural world and his experiences in
"tongues in trees, sermons in stones, books in running brooks and good in everything", that the
Duke is able to truly develop his identity. The personification of nature as the 'teacher' implies that
the Duke has been taught about a new sense of identity. This demonstrates that the Duke's alienation
from the court has allowed him to become a part of the natural world and in turn enrich his own
identity and sense of self. In a similar way, the character of Jaques is able to deepen his
understanding about the values of belonging through his alienation from the court. However, this
alienation is by choice not force. As the rest of the group prepare for marriage with dance and food,
Jaques chooses not to return to the court believing he is "for other than for dancing measures". This
juxtaposition of behaviour illustrates to the audience the deeper meaning Jaques is determined to
find not only in himself but in a world away from the court. Not belonging has allowed Jaques to
understand the truth about the court of "painted pomp". The use of the alliteration highlights to the
audience the realisation that Jaques has come to about the artificial nature of the court. Shakespeare
uses this melancholy character to demonstrate that not belonging to a place allows an individual to
gain a better perspective of the world and their purpose on it. It is through the alienation from the
court that the Duke is able to develop his identity as part of the natural world and Jaques is able to
gain a better

like to imagine the feeling I get when I talk with my best friend. How she listens to me. When she
asks me questions. How we're laughing together. Well, I always try to create that same exact feeling

What would you like your readers to know about the essays you composed and revised this
semester?
This semester I learned many things from this course, but most importantly I developed better
writing skills. I believe by taking this English course, it has prepared me to write successful papers
throughout this semester. In nearly every major, I will need this knowledge on tests, organize
information in research papers and explain my ideas or opinions in essays. Any major in the
humanities will require a significant amount of writing. After taking this class I can confidentially
say that I have sufficient knowledge on writing a proper essay, for any class.

Theme Of Existentialism In As You Like It

  • 1. Theme Of Existentialism In As You Like It The play to be reviewed is As You Like It, written by William Shakespeare. The prevailing philosophy throughout the play is existentialism. What is existentialism? Existentialism can be defined through its ontology. Ontology is the study of the nature of reality and is also called the theory of reality. The ontology of existentialism can be discussed in under concepts of man and existence. In the concept of man, existentialists believe that man is not bound by any antecedent human nature but rather free to determine its own nature. It opposed those deterministic theories (ex. inborn talents, predestined path of life, etc.) and favoured principle of indeterminism. To be a man is to be undetermined, to be free. Man has the freedom to choose and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As quoted from Marcel, 'to exist' means not just to be 'present to my own aware–ness' but also to be a manifest being. "I exist–that is as much to say: I have something to make myself known and recognized both by others and by myself". In conclusion, existentialism is not about man as an absolute being but rather a relative and subjective one. As long as a man exists, there is always a room for him to revise and correct himself and has a future that is not determined by his innate nature, birthright, etc. The most important values on existentialism are freedom of choice and individuality. As You Like It is a play written by William Shakespeare and is classified as "marriage comedy" together with the plays Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream. The list of main characters includes Duke Frederick: the usurper of the throne of Duke Senior which is also his brother; Celia (aka Aliena): the daughter of Duke Frederick; Rosalind (aka Ganymede): the daughter of Duke Senior; Touchstone: the court's clown; Sons of the late Sir Rowland de Boys (of decreasing age): Oliver, Jaques, Orlando; Adam: a loyal servant to Sir Rowland and his sons; Amiens and Jaques: Lords that are banished with Duke Senior; Corin and Silvius: Sheperds in the forest of Arden; Phebe: a ... • 3. Analysis Of ' You Or Someone Like You ' Saving Anne Rosenbaum's Marriage Failing is a form of failure or a fault of individuals; it is also a weakness of a person's ability of doing something. In the novel, "You or Someone like You", Chandler Burr writes how a marriage that has a normal and simple life goes through hard times and sometimes, even reaches the point to make an important decision about choosing the success in life or the most desirable thing in each couple's life: marriage. However, Howard Rosenbaum's friends refer his wife, Anne Rosenbaum, to start her own book club; Anne's book club becomes Hollywood A–lister; and Anne sacrifices everything she has achieved in life to save her marriage. Fame, fortune, and newfound friendships are not bad to have in every one's life but because of these things, marriage is the main thing that is at risk when someone has those things in life. One's has to choose either marriage or success that has achieved in life. First, Howard Rosenbaum's friends refer his wife, Anne Rosenbaum, to start her own book club because when they are having a meeting, Denise and Stacey thinks that Anne should start her own club while her husband, Howard, is busy as a studio executive of the Random House. At our second meeting, Denise and Consuela and I set up in the garden. Drinks and ice on a small table before the tall Argentine grass, sparkling glass lined up, linen napkins for the food, which Consuela pass. When we're done the three of us step back and look it over. How you're going to prove the thesis Body Paragraph Topic Sentence – Shakespeare's take on masculinity. In As You Like It, it seems that Shakespeare believes that it is a man's natural instinct to romanticize women. While Celia is reading Orlando's poem to Rosalind, all of the women mentioned had something disastrous happen to them. (Act 3 Scene 2 Lines 143 through 156) Tie to the topic sentence. Another thing a man needs to be is tough. When Rosalind, as Ganymede, is talking to Oliver, Orlando's brother, she faints at the sight on Orlando's blood on the handkerchief. In response, Oliver tells "him" that he needs to act more like a man. (Act 4 Scene 3 Lines 12) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare believes that women are more prone to crying and that they are the weaker gender. When Rosalind is talking to Aliena, she says "I could find in my heart to disgrace my man's apparel and to cry like a woman, but I must comfort the weaker vessel, as doublet and hose ought to show itself courageous to petticoat". (2.4.4–8) In the past, it was believed that because of the fact that women give birth, they are the fairer sex. Most people believed that women could not protect themselves, and that they needed courageous men to protect them. Shakespeare also portrays women in a stereotypical manner, in the sense that it was believed that women normally rave over males, making them seem foolish. In Scene 3 Act 2, Rosalind is giddy over Orlando, perpetuating the stereotype that woman go crazy over guys. (3.2.198–208) Tie to the topic sentence. Another stereotype that Shakespeare brings up is the stereotype that women don't think before they speak, and that they talk all the time. Rosalind says in Act 3 Scene 2 "Do you not know I am a woman? When I think, I must speak". This was a common view, resulting in woman always being told that they were nagging. II. IV. • 7. As You Like It Belonging Essay ENGLISH ADVANCED BELONGING ESSAY An individual's sense of belonging can be shaped by numerous elements of their interactions with other people and places. To obtain a true sense of belonging, these elements must work to support and accept the individual in their discovery of a fulfilled and contented existence. These essential concepts of belonging are displayed within William Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It, Mark Twain's novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and A.B. Patterson's poem Clancy of the Overflow. Through the composers' use of dramatic, language, poetic and literary techniques, we are able to explore the various aspects and ideas which lead to a deep sense of belonging. One of the fundamental concepts of belonging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Shakespeare uses this couple to further satirise the Petrarchan tradition of love and display that although pure unadulterated love can lead to a sense of belonging, so can a connection of a less noble manner; thus highlighting the numerous avenues of belonging. Through the dialogue "as a walled town is more worthier than a village... the forehead of a married man more honourable than the bare brow of a bachelor" and "I do desire with all my heart... to be a woman of the world", Shakespeare contrasts the affection of Touchstone and Audrey and that of Orlando and Rosalind and emphasises the different levels of belonging. This contrast between the morals and ethics of relationships reflects how true love, however also materialistic love establishes a deep sense of belonging and builds understanding between the individuals involved. Another key aspect of belonging is the relationship to a place or setting. In As You Like It, the two symbolic settings that the characters inhabit are vastly juxtaposed, as we see the natural essence of the Forest of Arden contrasted with the supposedly civilised Courts of Duke Fredrick. Shakespeare's use of contrast, imagery and dialogue reflects the different states of belonging which the courts and Forest of Arden represent. The use of hyperbole by Orlando in Act 1 when he asks Oliver "Shall I keep your pigs and eat husks with them" emphasises the extent of which Orlando does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. As You Like It by William Shakespeare In William Shakespeare's play, As You Like It, the protagonist, Rosalind, disguises herself as a boy for the majority of the play. Rosalind is used by Shakespeare to help divulge a portion of Shakespeare's personal life and also show flaws in the unique stereotypes that are expected for boys and girls. Shakespeare's main use for Rosalind was to illustrate the unique features and characteristics that boys and girls are expected to have and how easily they can be overlooked. Even though boys and girls are both equal human beings, it was not thought to be this way in Shakespeare's time. Rosalind wanted to do more than what a girl could do, and thus, she disguised herself and effectively "became" a man. However, Shakespeare also uses Rosalind to help divulge some secrets that may have been present in Shakespeare's personal life, such as an imposter Shakespeare. Gender discrimination and stereotypes have been around since the dawn of time. Throughout the centuries, it has always been believed that women should be confined to household and non– strenuous jobs such as: doing the housekeeping, raising children, tending to her husband's every need, and teaching at schools. Gender discrimination is first illustrated in the Bible through 1st Timothy 2:12 by saying, "I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over man; rather, she is to remain quiet" and also in Genesis 3:16, "To the woman he said, 'I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring ... Sometimes it's immediate and other times it takes a few days, but it always follows the same pattern. They look at me. Then down. They'll open their mouth to ask. Then fall silent. An awkward aura will weigh down the air between us, choking my breath because I already know what they want to ask. I already know the information they are prioritizing. I wait to be freed from the hesitant anticipation. "So, do you like girls or boys?" I always respond the same way. I can still find a person attractive, but in the same way one may find a painting or statue attractive, and I still have a sex drive, it just doesn't ever have a target, and despite it all, I still want a relationship. How I view a relationship, can be considered quite separated from its traditional definition. Really I just want a companion, someone to joke with, and everything else we figure out along the way. I simply desire a deep emotional connection and if that just means a relationship that some else would just call a very close friendship that's fine. I like to think in that sense, it's like any other relationship, it would require communication and work, but not anymore than my heterosexual counter parts. I just lack that push. That's why that question is so hard to answer. It be easy to say "none of the above" and be done, but really, I just have all the options and no guidance. I could like a girl, a boy, or an individual outside that binary, but I don't "like" in the way the person asking means, or in the way person asking likes. She stifled a giggle, vainly trying to contort her face into a sufficently repentant expression, but the panic he radiated was making it extra challenging. "Paine... I'm," she bit down on the insides of her cheeks, "sorry. I really––" Snort. "Am. I didn't know." The corners of her mouth twitched again. He glowered at her. "No you're not." An accusatory finger shot down at her. "Look at you! You find this hilarious." He held on to that scalding anger a moment more, before sinking to the ground in an ooze of self pity. "You don't care what this means for me at all. In fact, my suffering just makes this better for you, doesn't it?" He pouted, desperate and pathetic, running overwrought hands through his hair. • 17. The Portrayal Analysis Of Rosalind's As You Like It After considering all the definitions available from The Oxford English Dictionary Online of the word giddy chosen from the passage, As You Like It Act 3 Scene 3, lines 281–328, I had concluded that Definition 3 A deemed to be the most relevant to the passage. The description of "attributes and actions" and "elated to thoughtlessness" {OED online, 2017) seems rather fitting to the character of Rosalind, and almost key, for Rosalind a petite but noble, wise woman, with a profound knowledge of all the intricacies of the heart, and indeed how to manipulate these emotions and stir within others foolishness. Danson Brown suggests "All Rosalind's speeches should be played 'giddily' as she is stylistically varied" he continues that "Rosalind's adopts registers that change in mood from teasing to 'holiday humour'" (Danson Brown, 2015 p.56) However the quote "I thank God I am not a woman, to be touched with so many giddy offences as he hath generally taxed their whole sex withal. (Rosalind in As You Like It, 3.2.335–38) in itself is quite 'giddy' 'light–headed, frivolous, flighty' (OED online, 2017) as there is a verbal irony it involves a discrepancy between what is said and what is really meant, as in its crude form, sarcasm. The themes of the entire play as well as this chosen passage also fit around the definition of giddy aptly the delights of love and the malleability of the human experience, and the motif of artifice, 'being easily carried away by excitement' (OED online, ... When you heard this dictum, you were almost certainly a young child. This is an example of how even at a young age, with no education about women's rights, women are still looked at as inferior to men. The view of a woman in America is tainted with preconceptions of emotional instability and the image to be perfect. However throughout the decades, the evolution of women in America, has brought change to society tremendously. In the aftermath of WWII, women begin to over throw the household chore image, and began to accomplish goals, work, and promote gender equality. Although their hard work and dedication towards the feminist movement bred results, unfortunately, inequality still presents in some areas. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Heidegger, man can only reflect his real self to his self. Man cannot be what he is not. He can be what he is already: his existence. He further says that humans were temporal beings. It finds itself finite because he was bound in time and the space he was experiencing. And when man finds itself finite, his existence would be doomed. But by his free will, he can overcome these threats to his existence. For Heidegger, on the one hand man is creator of his own experience and on the other hand, he is subject of his experience. If man accepts the responsibility for developing his own being then he has true human aspects in his personality. In the concept of existence, existentialists differentiate the verb "to exist" from the verb "to live". For them, existence means a full, self conscious, responsible and growing life. Existentialists divided the concept of existence between authentic existence, and inauthentic existence. A man can live in an unauthentic existence by being a member of a group that is absorbed only in things and details of everyday life. Achilles lived for a time undisturbed with his love because he was disguised as a maiden. Apollo in the stress of battle appeared in the guise of a common soldier and encouraged his favourite hero. Odysseus returned from his wanderings in the shape of a beggar in order that he might not be recognized at home." (Freeburg 1) The notion of disguise has been known from the ancient drama, continuing its journey through all important periods of time. It attained the most exquisite resurrection in the Renaissance England being used by the erstwhile biggest playwrights. It has been generally known that Elizabethan drama reached its climax in Shakespeare's work. Shakespeare himself is the creator of numerous dramatic arts and skills which made typical features of his work. Shakespeare too used the concept of disguise in a number of his plays. It is not only used as an escape from the characters' personalities but also it gives birth to serious comic effects. In As You Like it, the disguise becomes very farcical. As stated in the notes this comedy also known as romantic comedy focuses on love, affairs, obstacles, disguises, and resolutions. This type of comedy is usually made–up by a conflict that tends to have a happy ending. As You Like It is one of many comedy plays written by Shakespeare. Both parties need to hide from an authority figure, Rosalind and Celia need to hide from Duke Frederick while Joe and Jerry need to hide from the Police. Correspondingly both parties decide to disguise themselves as the opposite sex. Rosalind dresses–up as Ganymede (man) and Celia as Aliena (women), Joe and Jerry dressed up as Josephine and Daphne to obtain jobs in an all–girl band. Unlike Rosalind who believes women can do anything they want without the help or approval of men, and who also believes that marriage should only be based on love. Jerry thinks otherwise in one of the verses we can see that Jerry is willing to do anything in order to be financially stable with or without love. Joe: "But your not a girl you are a guy, why would a guy want to marry a guy?". Jerry: "for security". I interpreted this scene as a form of parody towards social norms, on how men are supposed to provide for the well–being of women and women are to be married to a man who provide security and support, whether they are in love or not. Another similar scene that shows the parody of women wanting to marry men for money is when Sugar Kane who is a member of the all–girls band meets a millionaire who happens to be Joe disguise as Junior, Sugar: "Oh Josephine I have to tell you, I Met one of them! • 35. As You Like It by William Shakespeare In the play, As you like it, Rosalind and her cousin, Celia, disguise themselves so they will be safe in the forest, where they run away. Celia dresses up as a poor lady and Rosalind dresses up as a poor man. In the past society has made it seem like it was impossible to act like a man or dress as one. In the play, As you like it, Rosalind has to dress up and acts like a man to make it through the Forest of Arden. Rosalind's father got banned from the city and is sent to the forest by his own brother, who is the father of Celia. Celia and Rosalind are very close and act as sisters. Duke Fredrick then tells Rosalind that she needs to leave the city and go to the Forest of Arden as well. Celia and Rosalind decided that they will run away before either one of them could get banned from the city. They dress up as different people, Rosalind as Ganymede and Celia as a poor girl. They do this for their own safety and so no one would recognize them. In the past, people had a fixed notion on how different male and females acted. Women of upper classes were to be married to someone that their parents have chosen, most likely with families that had just as much wealth and power. Women who were in lower classes most likely waited to get married in their twenties and to the man of their choice. They got married much later to save money to run a house. When a woman got married they probably stayed at home to run their house and make sure it was suitable for their husbands. Women ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From that moment, time marches on until the inevitable death occurs to take one once again from the world of the living. Life and death fascinated various playwrights and authors of the Renaissance. Shakespeare made his interest in aging known in many of his plays and sonnets. He approaches this continuing theme from many angles. In many of his sonnets he talks about aging and how the image changes as one ages and gets older and less attractive. Since the average lifespan was so much shorter during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, many people tended to get married and have children much earlier than today. Although it is commonly believed that the young love of >Romeo and Juliet was commonplace in England at this time, marriage registries show that many did not marry until their mid twenties (Best). • 39. Bad Relationships In Someone Like You Causes of Bad Relationship A bad relationship may develop without your notice. In the film 'Someone Like You', the most obvious example is the relationship between Ray and Jane. The breakdown is not a sudden effect, but a gradual development. It all starts with the imbalance of giving. According to Cher Carter–Scott, dangers arises when one person gives too little in a relationship. In the movie, Jane invests everything, including her heart, body (sex) and future life (cohabitation). However, Ray is the opposite. All he can give is the short– term excitement and passion. As Robert Solomon suggested, their desire mismatch leads to coordination problem. Their love–at–first–sight relationship also lacks a strong foundation to overcome challenges. Applying Robert Sternberg's triangular theory of love, Ray and Jane's form of love is Romantic Love (intimacy + passion). In their first meeting, they feel attracted to one another. Eventually intimacy grows and they start dating. The process is filled with passion. However, Ray is not ready for commitment. He never has a clear cut with Diane. Jane feels unsafe and uncertain as the triangular relationship continues. The bond between Ray and Jane gets weaker day by day, such that any quarrels can break it easily. The key to further worsen the relationship is poor communication. Taking the case of cohabitation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believe that they love each other after seeing each other once, knowing little about each other: their love is shallow, Just as Touchstone and Audrey. As soon as Act 3, scene 3 opens up, Touchstone is already asking Phoebe is he the man for her. Then shortly afterwards he states "I will marry thee" (line 40). • 55. Examples Of Disguise In As You Like It Shakespeare uses the idea of disguise in many of his plays. It is used as an escape from the characters' personalities and sometimes for comic effect. In As You Like it, the disguise becomes very comical as in the time it was written only men could act on stage. This could lead to much confusion and comedy in the roles of those in disguise. Disguise can give the freedom to a character to act how they like and a chance for them to show their views. It was in the 16th Century that there became an increased sense of self consciousness and identity. This led to people creating an image for themselves. If one can create a self, they can create many different versions of themselves each showing a different aspect of that person. This links in very well with As You Like It because in the play, Rosalind creates many different disguises of herself. At one point she is disguised as a boy acting as Rosalind. Shakespeare's early romantic comedy most indebted to John Lyly is Love's Labour's Lost (c. 1588– 97), a confection set in the never–never land of Navarre where the King and his companions are visited by the Princess of France and her ladies–in–waiting on a diplomatic mission that soon devolves into a game of courtship. As is often the case in Shakespearean romantic comedy, the young women are sure of who they are and whom they intend to marry; one cannot be certain that they ever really fall in love, since they begin by knowing what they want. The young men, conversely, fall all over themselves in their comically futile attempts to eschew romantic love in favour of more serious pursuits. They perjure themselves, are shamed and put down, and are finally forgiven their follies by the women. Shakespeare brilliantly portrays male discomfiture and female self–assurance as he explores the treacherous but desirable world of sexual attraction, while the verbal gymnastics of the play emphasize the wonder and the delicious foolishness of falling in love. In The Taming of the Shrew (c. 1590–94), Shakespeare employs a device of multiple plotting that is to become a standard feature of his romantic comedies. Essay Comparing Macbeth And As You Like It Shakespeare's Macbeth and As You Like It have very similar themes with the characters as it shows how the roles of life and death are significant to human existence. In Act V, Scene 5 of Macbeth, Macbeth's poem–like monologue shines light on how life is short and each day is closer to death. In Act II, Scene 7 of As You Like It, Jaques compares the whole life cycle to a play with different short acts that ends with an old decrepit man that has no fight left in him. The tone and imagery of these two monologues displayed the concept of humanity and life and death. The tone for both excerpts is extremely mournful and somber. When talking about death, both speakers (Macbeth and Jaques) relate to it depressingly. In Macbeth, he refers to life as ,"but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more." Macbeth portrays life as a one–hit wonder, famous one day and never seen ever again. As You Like It portrays life in a more secular way. In life, you go from being a fresh baby to a fading old man; and at the end, there's nothing "sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything." What you're met with is oblivion. Act 1 Scene 3 explores belonging and not belonging through love and nature as it establishes the plot at the mark of separation from court and country by Rosalind and Celia breaking the sense of belonging to place. Celia and Rosalind convey a strong bond evident in Celia's plea to her father, Duke Frederick, to keep Rosalind at court rather than banishing her to the Forest of Arden. Conventions of love are evident ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These settings are symbolic of the lack of belonging which is felt when the natural order is destroyed and baser natural instincts conquer positive feelings. "Now go we in content, to liberty and not to banishment" concludes the scene with a rhyming couplet giving the scene a positive ending through a tone of contentment that arises from a greater sense of belonging and connection between individuals. Similarly, the film by Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands portrays deep ideas about belonging whereby notions of acceptance and identity are illustrated through the use of filming techniques. Love and acceptance are challenged when Peg Boggs, the Avon representative rescues Edward from the mansion on top of the hill where he has spent his entirety. Upon Peg entering, a wide shot shows the sun shining into the mansion symbolising how the outside world has forever shone through but never been explored. The fear and disappointment of being judged for the hands that his inventor was never able to give him as "he never woke up" has left him in solidarity disconnected from society. Consciousness itself is difficult to achieve. A difference between humans and AI is that humans have brains. A neuroscientist explains that "...brains and computers work very differently. Both compute, but only one understands–and there are some very compelling reasons to believe that this is not going to change. It appears that there is a more technical obstacle that stands in the way of [conscious] A.I. ever becoming a reality." Unless humans find a way to implement a brain into an artificial intelligence, a creation like Samantha would be hardly achievable. Furthermore, there are also other challenges that are not related to technical reasons. Even if an assumption is made that this kind of AI existed, the biggest obstacle that it will face is in terms of privacy which is shown from the movie Her. • 71. Analysis Of ' As You Like It ' "As You Like It", is a Shakespearean comedy that is believed to have been written around the 1600's. This play holds onto many strong motifs throughout the entire play. One of the most obvious motifs would have to be the concept of exile. Many of the characters in the play have been intimidated away from their homes, while others left voluntarily to live in the forest of Arden. This separation from their homes in the court aids in helping Shakespeare's major themes come alive. The major themes evident in Act 4 Scene 3 is the malleability of humans through experience, the effects of love, and a comparison of city life to country life. It is important to note the malleability of human nature through an individual's life experience. According to some psychologists, "what is built in [to humans] is this capacity to learn and change according to the world [they] find [themselves] in" (Dweck, par. 3). This is supported in Shakespeare's play through the character of Oliver. At his home in the court, Oliver finds himself blessed with the riches and power that his father handed down to him. This inheritance is known as the right of primogeniture. The system in which a father's riches and title is handed down to the eldest son, leaving the rest of the siblings with nothing. Oliver is a petty and jealous individual who treats his younger brother Orlando as if he were just another servant. The root of this hatred is made clear in Oliver's monologue at the end of act one scene one, in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Not Belonging In Shakespeare's As You Like It To belong is to have an affinity to a place or person. In this way, not belonging may be even more important than belonging as often individuals must be alienated in order to truly accept and understand their own identity. Such a notion is explored within the Shakespearean play, As you Like it, written in 1603. The text clearly illustrates the way in which not belonging to people, place and society is even more important that belonging as it allows an individual to gain a heightened understanding of the value of belonging and identity. Not belonging to people can lead individuals to gain a deeper understanding of the value of belonging. As seen in As You Like it, several characters are forced to experience alienation in order to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This idea is evident in the play as several characters who are isolated from The Court are able to deepen their understanding of identity. Shakespeare uses the character of Duke Senior to illustrate such an idea. The Duke is banished from the court by his younger brother and placed into exile in the Forest of Arden. It is through this displacement into the natural world and his experiences in "tongues in trees, sermons in stones, books in running brooks and good in everything", that the Duke is able to truly develop his identity. The personification of nature as the 'teacher' implies that the Duke has been taught about a new sense of identity. This demonstrates that the Duke's alienation from the court has allowed him to become a part of the natural world and in turn enrich his own identity and sense of self. In a similar way, the character of Jaques is able to deepen his understanding about the values of belonging through his alienation from the court. However, this alienation is by choice not force. As the rest of the group prepare for marriage with dance and food, Jaques chooses not to return to the court believing he is "for other than for dancing measures". This juxtaposition of behaviour illustrates to the audience the deeper meaning Jaques is determined to find not only in himself but in a world away from the court. Not belonging has allowed Jaques to understand the truth about the court of "painted pomp". The use of the alliteration highlights to the audience the realisation that Jaques has come to about the artificial nature of the court. Shakespeare uses this melancholy character to demonstrate that not belonging to a place allows an individual to gain a better perspective of the world and their purpose on it. It is through the alienation from the court that the Duke is able to develop his identity as part of the natural world and Jaques is able to gain a better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
