The Thread
The Thread by Victoria Hislop is set in Thessaloniki, Greece. The novel tells the story of the
multicultural yet racist city and how the face of the city has changed since the early twentieth
century all the way up until today. As Dimitri Komninos is born, a devastating fire sweeps through
the thriving Greek city where Christians, Jews and Muslims live side by side. As his father rebuilds
their fabric empire first and eventually the showpiece home overlooking the sea, Dimitri and his
mother live on Irini Street, in the humble home in which his mother grew up surrounded by all sorts
of different and multicultural people. Five years later, Katerina Sarafoglou's a greek whose home in
Asia Minor is destroyed by the Turkish army. Losing her mother ... Show more content on

Just because they have different coloured skin and practice a different religion does that make them
someone less than you? In the end without the color and religion barriers aren't you just a human
being so why treat each other differently? Why aren't "white people" bullied because of their
beliefs? Will racism ever go away? These questions also helped build some connections to world.
Some connections I instantly made to the world were about how poorly some people are treat
because of their race. In the book Muslims were forced to leave their homes and move because of a
political crisis and resettle somewhere else. This is occurring even today. Take America for example.
Trump and a larger part of America thinks muslims are "terrorist" and have enforced a muslim ban.
This has forced many muslims to reconsider living in USA. Another connections to the world is of
genocides. The WW2 genocide mentioned in the book, reminded me of the Rwandan genocide and
the terrible aftermath of it. This story makes a lot of connections to the social problems that have
been carried on from the 1900's to present

Us Involvement In The Middle East
"BOOM" was the noise that thundered across New York City on the morning of September 11th,
2001. A noise that would forever change the lives of many people. Terrorists associated with Al
Qaeda, a group that was founded by Osama Bin Laden, hijacked four airplanes and flew two of
them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane collided with
the side of the Pentagon, the country's military headquarters, coming in close contact with
Washington D.C. The last plane, United Airlines flight 93, was crash landed in an open field in the
middle of Pennsylvania. Such a devastating act of terrorism led to public outrage across the nation.
It came as no surprise that the government had to respond to its people's distress ... Show more

After World War II the Soviet Union and the United States rivaled to gain more allies. The United
States believed democracy was the best hope for the world. The Soviet Union believed in a rigid
communist form of government. Once the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan implementing the
Carter Doctrine. The article, Carter Doctrine by Elizabeth Matthews states,"It was acknowledgment
that the security of the United States was interdependent with that of the Persian Gulf. The invasion
of Afghanistan raised the fear that it was only the first step in a Soviet plan to cut off access of the
Western powers to the oil from that region." Meaning the United States protected Afghanistan from
the Soviet Union in order to protect the soil. The United States believed that if they did not prevent
countries from forming an alliance with the Soviet Union then they would be outnumbered later on
causing communist to rule take over the world. Once many countries in the Middle East started
receiving large amounts of financial and military aid for more than fifty years, the Middle East soon
began to perceive that the Americans believed in freedom for themselves but helped dictators deny
freedom to their citizens. For instance, in the book Understanding September 11th by Mitch Frank it
states, "The United States government was so focused on keeping the Soviets out of the Middle East
that it often ignored the needs

Conflict in the Middle East between 1948 and 1978
Between 1948 and 1978 conflict erupted between the Israel and numerous Arab states such as
Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. The conflict of the Middle East began shortly after Israel was declared a
nation by the United Nations after world war two. The Middle East is an area of great strategic
importance. It contains vital trade routes such as that of the Suez Canal, and is rich in oil or "black
gold", one of the most important resources of the world, and vital for a country to operate. The two
super powers of the world at that point in time were engaged in the cold war, The USSR and USA
therefore found the Middle East to be of great importance. They would not fight each other directly
as atomic weapons would most likely be used, and therefore mutually assured destruction would
come into being. They therefore used the Middle East conflict as an opportunity to fight war by
proxy, done by supplying aid, weapons, training and advice to their supported countries and
expanding their sphere of influence within the Middle East, so as to try get that area under their
control. The USA was a great supporter of Israel due to her many Jewish links, her strong Jewish
lobby, and thereby used her to increase her influence within the region. While the USSR supported
the Arab states, in an attempt to increase her sphere of influence. Both the Arabs and Israelis were
happy to have a greater superpower supporting them, as it gave them the resources to destroy the
other side. However when Israel was

The Holocaust: The Purpose Of The Nazi Party
The Nazi party was anti–Semitic, against Jews, and in 1941 with the "final solution plan" the Jews
began to be chased by the Gestapo, Hitler secret police, with the objective of killing all the
European Jews. This could result strange to everyone because there is no reason for killing them at
least we do not see that reason but the Germans did and they saw the Jewish as the guilty of
everything that was wrong in the country so the solution was to send them to gethos, Jewish
neighborhoods, and then pick them up with the train of the death which final stop were the labor
camps were they were killed in many horrible ways. Although before this plan the Jewish were
already being persecuted an example of this is "the night of the broken glasses "where In two days,
over 250 synagogues were burned, over 7,000 Jewish businesses were trashed and looted, dozens of
Jewish people were killed, and Jewish cemeteries, hospitals, schools, and homes were looted while
police and fire brigades stood by because a German general was killed in Paris.

The Leadership Style of King David
Leadership 1 Essay 1 Take one leader in the Bible, other than Jesus, and evaluate his or her
leadership style from using the framework of modern thinking on leadership and your own
theological reflection. Introduction In her book "Leadership Can Be Taught", Sharon Parks (2005,
p.3.) suggests that the study of leadership is "important for the common good" in today's "complex
changing world". The term "complex changing world" could easily be used to describe the time
covered by the early years of King David as described in 1 Samuel chapter 16 to 2 Samuel chapter
5, and 1 Chronicles chapter 11. This was the beginning of a turbulent Kingship for a dichotomous
Israel, at a time of continual external agitation from their enemies. It was a ... Show more content on

Verse three outlines the start of the forming of David's band of miscreants; "Also joining him was
every person who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented
gathered to him. He became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him"
(NKJV). David is now the leader of an unstructured group of men discontented with the current
political situation. They had been wronged and mistreated, were under a curse of debt that they
could not pay. They were not trained loyal soldiers, but like David, are so distressed that they have
no option left except to run and hide from their problems (Swindoll, 1997, p.74; Epp, 1965, p.56).
Psalm 57 indicates that not only were they hiding, but they were angry and wanting vengeance on
those they felt had wronged them. Keller (1985, pp. 120,121) suggests that it was in living with
these oppressed outcasts that David developed his compassion for those living under oppression.
Chapter 23 starts with an acclamation of the transformation that David's band of miscreant had
undergone. It appears that David had been training his men into an army of soldiers, and although
they had little faith in their own abilities as warriors, they had faith in David as a leader. When he
said that they could overthrow the Philistines at Keilah, David's army (now numbering 600) even
followed him into what they

Cold War Research Paper
"The USA and the USSR formed an un unnatural alliance in World War 2 that was bound to fall
apart after the defeat of a common enemy" To what extent does this statement explain the origin and
development of the Cold War to 1968.
The origins of the Cold War, as well as its developments have become one of history's largest
debates, with many different answers and opinions. The suggested explanations of these origins and
developments all demonstrate different viewpoints of militaristic, political and economical factors.
Conferences, political tension, The Cold War, its origins, and its developments inevitably emphasize
the collapse of the alliance between USA and USSR after the defeat of Germany in World War 2.
Tension between the USA and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both sides believed that their chosen political ideology was superior. The USA believed solely in the
ways of democracy and the rights of every individual, whereas contrastingly the USSR believes in
communism, where the state as a whole is more important than the individual. Due to communism,
many Soviets believed that the tension between them and the USA was unavoidable. This idea lead
to a theory known as the 'two camps theory', where the world was divided into two sides, communist
or capitalist. The Soviet Union was convinced that all capitalist countries were attempting to
sabotage their country and their political ideology. All conflicts that took part during the Cold War
were inevitably caused by the clash of ideologies between two of the world's superpowers. The
extent of the USA and USSR's alliance collapse is indefinite as being a cause of the origins and
developments of the Cold War. Events such as the arms race and the space race highlight the
competitivity between the countries, as they both fought to be the superpower of the world. The
development of nuclear weapons also magnified the significance of their rivalry. In Harry Truman's
address speaking about his Doctrine he says: "We shall not realize our objectives, however, unless
we are willing to help free peoples to maintain their free institutions and their national integrity
against aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian regimes" . This source

Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay
Arab–Israeli Conflict During the First World War (1914–1918), Britain met with problems
concerning promises made, yet not being kept. Britain, knowing that it needed all the help it could
get against the German allies, promised land to people who desperately wanted it. However, as it
was revealed Britain had no intention of honouring their word. The first promise to be made was to
the Arabs, in a desperate attempt to overpower one of the countries the British were fighting; the
Turks. The Arab leader, Sherif Hussein, agreed to help defeat the Turks, on the condition that at the
end of the war, the Arabs would get their freedom. The British accepted the terms, and in 1915 it
was written up in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was, like the McMahon letter to the Arabs, promising the Jews ownership of Palestine. This
was, made at a time when Britain was having many problems fighting the allies, and needed all the
help they could find. There are a few reasons why historians believe this letter was issued. It was
thought that the Jews in America and Russia had a lot of money and power, and so would therefore
encourage their governments to continue in the war. There was sympathy for the Zionists, as the
leaders like Balfour knew that the Jews had endured a lot of hardship, and suffered many injustices,
and so saw this promise as a chance to right some of the wrongs committed. Britain used the Suez
Canal, in Egypt. However, it was right next door to Palestine, and so it would greatly benefit Britain
if the people who governed the neighbouring Palestine, were friendly towards Britain and their
interests. The new leader of the Zionists, Chaim Weizmann, was a friend of a few leading politicians
such as Balfour and the present Prime minister, Lloyd George. It is quite probable that the British
Government had no idea of the changes that this Declaration would cause on the short and long–
term effects on the problems between the Arabs and the Jews. The consequences of these unkept
promises were quite terrible for Britain, making their situation in Europe much worse. The Arabs

The Holocaust : A More Perfect Union
We the people, in order to form a more perfect union Devan Shanker Mr. Perry Modern European
History per 3 Although many recognize the Holocaust as one of the most catastrophic genocides in
history, few acknowledge its underlying causes. Historians often attribute the combination of
German aggression and foreign appeasement with the Nazi rise to power and success in completing
the Final Solution. However, the power of the totalitarian regime originated from its domestic
policy, allowing one man to manipulate the thoughts and actions of an entire nation. The Nazi
indoctrination of Germany with propaganda provided the government with the political power
necessary to unleash police terror upon dissenters and defamed minorities, which ... Show more

In addition, the perceived communist threat compelled Hindenburg to pass the Reichstag Fire
Decree, nullifying all civil liberties and providing the Nazi Party with the freedom to use violence
against any minority or dissenter without repercussion. Political propaganda elevated the status of
the party while slandering opponents, providing the Nazi Party with sufficient influence to initiate
the Final Solution. However, Nazi propaganda also deceived other nations about the intensity of
persecution and militarization in Germany, delaying attempts at foreign diplomacy and military
responses. The Nazi Party tailored propaganda to influence foreign perspectives of Germany and
directed many of attempts, including the Theresienstadt masquerade, to depict the tolerable nature of
life in concentration camps ("Propaganda, Nazi"). Meanwhile, propaganda films such as Triumph
des Willens portrayed the German army as a peaceful assembly of workers fighting against the
poverty and unemployment of the depression. Foreign propaganda made other nations disregard
Nazi violation of the Treaty of Versailles, allowing Hitler to surprise Europe with a series of
unstoppable blitzkrieg attacks and distract other nations from his plans for the Final Solution.
Propaganda offered the Nazi Party social, political, and military advantages that brought it the
political influence, popular support, and time required to implement

The Usa Patriot Act : What 's So Patriotic About Trampling...
After the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001 the United States
became a very different place. This drastic change was caused by the initial emotional reactions that
American citizens, as well as government leaders had towards the tragic event. The government, in
an effort to assure that these events never happen again passed the USA PATRIOT Act, which is an
acronym that stands for the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools
Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act. The major goal of this act is to combat terrorism
by giving the government more leeway in what areas they are allowed to use their surveillance tools
and also to what circumstances these tools can be used. The major issue that arise with this act are
the fact that many of the act can be seen as unconstitutional.
In Nancy Chang's article, USA PATRIOT Act: What's So Patriotic About Trampling on the Bill of
Rights?, she explains all the changes that the act has made, specifically in terms of the language that
the act itself uses to describe it's new power (2001:1–15) . Chang's description of the act, in its
entirety, is that the act was "hastily– drafted, complex, and far–reaching legislation" which explains
why the language in this act is so controversial (2001:1). The Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis is defined by
Richard H. Robbins as the idea that there is an explicit link between the grammar of language and
the culture of the people who speak that

Communism In Germany
It all started when the rise of the Nazi Party came. Under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, and founded
in 1919, the National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazi Party, grew into much more than a
meeting on the streets. It grew into a mass movement. The movement itself was Anti–Semitism and
had much turmoil with the Treaty of Versailles. It had helped put an end to the first World War. Once
Hitler was given power over Germany, he swiftly persuaded the people against the Treaty. In 1929,
Germany was in a state of economic depression, and unemployment. Once Nazi power hit, it swore
in more of the party, leading them to get 230 out of the 608 seats, located in Reichstag. January

State Of The Union Address Rhetorical Devices
Analysis: President Trump's State of the Union Address President Donald J Trump's first State of the
Union address is filled with deliberate rhetorical devices which allow him to move his audience and
achieve his purpose. Trump's use of these rhetorical devices in his speech appeal to pathos, ethos
and logos. With rhetorical devices like repetition and anecdotes plus his use of pointed diction ,
President Trump inspires patriotism and unity and makes people feel safe ,and, ultimately, he lets
them know that he and his administration are and will serve the people and will support them.
President Trump's speech had many patriotic moments; some which even got people to shout in
unity "USA, USA". There are many ways he inspires patriotism in his speech, but the greatest one is

One big area would be the economy and trade, which Trump addresses with logos using statistics
and inspiring diction. "We will work to fix bad trade deals and negotiate new ones. And we will
protect America intellectual property, through strong enforcement of our trade rules." Another area,
he addresses is the infrastructure which he describes using the metaphor "crumbling infrastructure".
Trump's use of the word "crumbling" makes people see the severity of the issue and by saying, " I
am calling on the Congress to produce a bill that generates at least $1.5 trillion for the new
infrastructure investment we need." he is proposing a solution to the issue, one which will benefit
all. Trump's usage of ethos also contributes to his speech, "We want every American to know the
dignity of a hard day's work. We want every child to be safe in their home at night. And we want
every citizen to be proud of this land we love." His diction, for example the world dignity and safe,
shows that he cares for Americans and that he will do what must be done to protect

The Importance Of Trenches In World War One
the trenches were narrow open tunnels that were used protect troops from enemy fire and to
transport troops to the front life. They were originally dug in straight lines but this was changed a
pattern of zigzags for a number of reasons. Some of these seasons included to prevent the enemy
from firing down the length of the trenches killing large numbers of soldiers and to prevent gas
attacks from spreading down the length of the trenches. Trenches were on the front line and they
were most dangerous place to be in world war one. Behind the trenches on the front line were a
mass supply of reinforcement troops, training camps, stores and workshops. For 450 men to build
250 metres of trenches it took 6 hours. These 6 hours did not include adding the board walks, barb

The Democratic People 's Republic Of Korea
Established in September of 1948, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), or as it is
more commonly known, North Korea, is a relatively young state (CIA Factbook!). Despite its short
period of existence however, this east Asian country has managed to crawl its way into worldwide
spotlight for its totalitarian–style government, robust nuclear weapons programs, and prevalent use
of crimes against humanity. For outsiders looking in, the nation appears to be at its tipping point,
with the possibility of revolt waiting around every corner. However, for North Korean citizens, a
well–structured and large–scale rebellion may seem both impossible and unnecessary. Currently
commanded by the infamous, baby–faced Kim Jong Un, the communist regime works tirelessly to
advance the political state of North Korea within the world, while simultaneously restricting their
people from reaching autonomy, economic success, and enlightenment to their rulers' wrongdoings.
To better understand how a nation as segregated and restrictive as North Korea can remain intact,
this paper will explore how the DPRK uses propaganda and the restriction of communication to
control its people. To better recognize how and why the North Korean government operates the way
it does, it is crucial to understand how the nation was formed. Prior to World War II, the Korean
Peninsula was under the rule of the Japanese, devoid of what we know today as North Korea and
South Korea (New World Encyclopedia, 2014).

In 1922 France declared a mandate over Syria, and in short Britain and France together controlled
all of what is today Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Syria and Iraq, leaving south Arabia as a nominally
independent Arab territory. Palestinian Arabs were encouraged by Transjordans's independence from
Britain 1928 and Iraq's in 1932. Meanwhile Britain had already ended its Egyptian protectorate in
1922; in 1936 she limited her presence there to a Suez Canal garrison. In Palestine Britain was now
caught between Jewish and Arab demands, and found it increasingly difficult to satisfy both sides.
Reacting to the phenomenal Nazi oppression of Jews, fully 225,000 Jews had left Germany and East
and Central Europe for Palestine between 1933 and 1939. In February 1947 after various partition
plans had failed in the face of Arab command on a unitary state, Britain referred the Palestine

states in his article, The Treatment of Japanese–American Internment During World War II in United
States History Textbooks, an example of how the camps have been described, "All the camps were
located in desolate areas...Barbed wire surrounded the camps, and armed guards patrolled the
grounds. Although the government referred to these as relocation camps, one journalist pointed out
that they seemed "uncomfortably close to concentration camps."." (Ogawa 41) However, the order
didn't affect Japanese Americans residing in Hawaii, "The text states that the Japanese Americans
living in Hawaii weren't interned. It was true ... however some were imprisoned on an individual
basis and held in prison camps on the islands or transferred to mass detention or smaller internment
camps on the mainland." Which was because over 37% of the Hawaiian population was of Japanese
descent and it would damage their economy. (Ogawa

Dances With Wolves Analysis
I thought the movie Dances with Wolves was a good film. I think that this was a good film since it
had a good storyline. In addition, I had thought the movies was also very interesting. I thought it
was interesting as it showed me the communication barrier between Dunbar and the Indians, the
Indians lack of knowledge on weaponry, and the perception of Indians. I also thought it was a good
film, since I had also learned a few things from it. One of those things being the perception of
Indians.
The movie gave me an insight on the relationship between the US and Indian relationships as it
seems as the USA did not like the Indians. It shows this with the perception of the Indians from the
comments the white people had made toward the Indians and ... Show more content on

I feel that this movie would be a historical fiction since the film does have some historical facts and
meaning. Some parts of the movie that show historical facts would be the perception of the Indians,
the few battles, and the customs of the Indians. These things cannot fictionalized, and would require
some research.
The treatment of the native people west of the Mississippi river in the time period following the civil
war was poor. The white people wanted the Indians to be exterminated. An example of this
happened in Colorado, when some Indian chiefs had sought peace and negotiation. In this
negotiation, they had army protection, however, they were killed in their sleep. The Indians were
also treated poorly as they suffered from the white Americans' racism, their belief that they owned
all the land, and paternalism. The forces at work on both of these sides were the people that had
strong beliefs and were not going to stand for anything but their beliefs. The Indians were on the
west side of the Mississippi river, and they did not want to leave their land. The white people were
on the other side of the Mississippi river and had their belief that they owned all the land. With these
two groups of people with different beliefs, this had lead to incompatible

An Efficient Way Transmit Codes
Throughout time the need for an efficient way transmit codes were essential to success, after World
War I and into the start of World War II American forces was running out of ideas for codes. The
USA had always used the white's soldiers for the code talkers because there were easy to train, and a
abundance of them to choose making them the practice choose for code talkers. Until Philip
Johnston, he was an initiator that worked for a Marine Corps ' program. As a kid and into his teens
he grew up on a Navajo reservation and his dad was a missionary. Whit all the time that Johnston
spent of the reservation he became familiar with the people and their language. With the use of the
Navajos it grained equality for Native Americans which was not found in the late 1800's, and soon it
gained them a greater respect by the whites into today's age. In the late 1800's Indians were seen
through the eyes of the settlers as pests, people who occupy the land that rightfully belonged to the
whites. They were thought of as savages. However this was not true, the Navajo Indians and many
other tribes were only willing to fight for their land, families and the property that they have
inhabited for hundreds of years (Robert A. Roessel, 1). In this time of lack of control, Navajos were
overpowered by Americans who were in position of authority and control. This is because
Americans lacked the understanding of the Navajo way, leading to be fatal for many as they were
being transferred, resigned,

Disney Extravaganz The National Dance Alliance
What is the Disney extravaganza? The National Cheer Association and the National Dance Alliance
create the Disney extravaganza as one team. The National Cheer Association is abbreviated NCA.
The National Dance Alliance is known as the NDA. The Disney Extravaganza is only a small
portion of a big parade. This portion is a Christmas dance that is put on by a team made up of NCA
and NDA participants. The video of the dance is combined with smaller portions of the parade and
the shows to make one parade. The parade is seen by viewers on Christmas day. The parade is a
magical experience that brings the childhood enjoyment of Christmas back. All cheerleaders and
dancers should get to be a part of this event. The National Cheer Association, the National Dance
Alliance, and Disney's Extravaganza is an amazing experience because it is a widely viewed parade,
a great accomplishment, and it gives one the opportunity to meet others. The Disney parade is a
popular event, like a football game, that many see around the U.S. every year. The parade is aired on
ABC on Christmas day. Every Christmas families get together to watch the parade run its route. We
all knew the children around the U.S. looked forward to the parade all year long, and we are
performing for them. Live fans watched with such enjoyment as we performed the dance. The

The problem in Syria is that millions of people are suffering. The suffering will not stop until the
war is resolved. The struggles that the people of Syria face are a direct result of the war.
Organizations will continue to lessen the suffering by providing aid, but they will have no effect
when it comes to ending the war. The harsh truth is that end of the war is nowhere near an end. The
problem is that no side is strong enough to win the war. Since the start, the Syrian Government
Army has gotten weaker and no longer has the power to take over cities controlled by the Free
Syrian Army (Dorell). The result of this is the mass destruction the country has faced. The Free
Syrian Army continues to fight back in response to the airstrikes from the Syrian Government
Army(Dorell). No side has been able to pull away and win the war. Foreign involvement has only
made the situation worse. The Russians have taken the side of the Syrian Government while the
United States have taken the side of the Syrian Rebel Army. Russia has attempted to help eliminate
the terrorist groups supporting the Syrian Rebel Army, in reality, many civilians were hurt in the
process (Dorell). The countries involved in the crisis have tried to organize peace treaties and cease
fires multiple times, but they all failed (Dorell). Looking at these recent events, the war does not

What Is Folkloric Like Epic Hero
The role and cultural description of what would be call a folkloric–like epic hero didn't change for
many years...
Batman, Spiderman, Superman, or even the Hulk are just echoes of what would be recognized as
folkloric–like epic heroes. Basically, a hero that is pictured as a "larger than life" character, who
fights the forces of evil, usually pictured as a vicious, cruel, villain or gruesome fiend.
Accordingly, the story of Beowulf is a classic example of such, including a clear folkloric epic hero
which is Beowulf, who fights forces of evil, presented as Grendel, his mother, and a fire breathing
dragon. Moreover, Beowulf express an expansive deal of heroic traits; for example: his bravery and
boldness, yet baffling fairness in his decisions before his first encounter with Grendel that can be
seen in this excerpt from the poem:
Lines 259–268;
"...I have heard, Too, that the monster's scorn of men Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears
none. Nor will I. My lord Higlac Might think less of me if I let my sword Go where my feet were
afraid to, if I hid Behind some board linden shield: my hands Alone shall fight for me, struggle for
life Against the monster. God must decide Who will be given to death's cold grip." ... Show more

US Interest In The Middle East
American involvement, interests, and policies in the Middle East have changed dramatically over
the past 220–plus years. And if one had to trace how exactly it has changed, the issue of oil and
Israel would be at the center. United States foreign policy in the Middle East goes back to the end of
the 18th century. It started on the wrong foot with the Barbary Wars right after America was
established. The shape of American interests in the Middle East at that time was not so clear, mainly
because political and military relations were minimal. Although there were some commercial ties
with some Arab countries and Persia, basically American involvement and interests in the Middle
East prior to WW I was limited. In the early 1900s, American companies ... Show more content on

Essay on Japanese American Internment Camps
Was the internment of Japanese Americans a compulsory act of justice or was it an unwarranted,
redundant act of tyranny which breached upon the rights of Japanese Americans? During World War
II thousands of Japanese Americans were told by government officials that they had twenty–four
hours to pack their things, get rid of any belongings of theirs, and to sell their businesses away for
less than retail value. Although many people thought the Japanese American internment was needed
to ensure U.S. security during the war against Japan, these relocation centers were unnecessary
violations of Japanese Americans' rights. These concentration camps are unconstitutional because
they infringed upon the Japanese Americans' first, seventh, and eighth ... Show more content on

They enforced security and warned others of the spoils of war. Although Japanese American
internment camps provided a safe harbor for Americans in knowing that the U.S. government was
safe from sabotage, it was an unjustified infringement upon the rights of Japanese Americans. The
first amendment states that "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech" (The
Bill of Rights). These Japanese had no say when they were being taken away to these camps. This
euphemistically termed "evacuation" was "a time of chaos and trauma for Japanese Americans"
(Japanese American Internment). Firstly, Japanese families had "scant time" to dispose of homes,
businesses, pets, and belongings (Japanese American Internment). Men, women, and children were
rushed onto trains with no knowledge of what was going on, and transported to concentration camps
in Santa Anita Racetrack, "only on the first day" (The Internment of Japanese Americans). These
Japanese Americans never gave their consent to be transported to these camps. If they tried to
escape or defied their orders, they were jailed, or for some, even worse. The conditions in them were
atrocious; some families were housed in "horse stalls at racetracks" and "cattle pens at fairgrounds"
(Japanese American Incarceration). The U.S. government "set a curfew for the Japanese"
Americans: stating that "persons of Japanese

The Atomic Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki Essay
The atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 is the most
controversial military decision in the history of Air Power, and may even be the most controversial
decision in history. The first of the bombings happened at Hiroshima, where the B–29 Superfortress
Enola Gay dropped Little Boy, an Uranium–based atomic bomb. Structural damage estimates vary,
with some sources claiming the blast and fires destroyed about 90% of the city (History.com Staff
"Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki") and some estimating a little more than a third of the
buildings were destroyed or severely damaged (""The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki."). Most sources estimate about a third of the population of the 300,000–person city died
in the immediate explosion (Wright), with tens of thousands more dying in the subsequent days as a
result of wounds and radiation. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led directly to the
unconditional surrender of the Japanese Empire and the end of World War 2, and indirectly caused
the Cold War between the United States and the USSR. Initially, historians took Churchill and
Truman's justifications that the bomb was dropped to end the war quickly, and that was the end of
the argument. Throughout time, revisionists have challenged that notion and argued that the bombs
were not necessary for ending the war in Japan in a timely fashion, and it was merely an unethical,
immoral show of power to the Soviets at the expense of the Japanese

She does not regularly visit the church and lives alone in South Wales. At the beginning of the story,

When asked which old lady she had to visit, Marian answered, 'any of them will do'. This again
shows that Marian only wanted to visit old ladies for a few points. Behind on of the doors, an old
lady coughed, which to Marian seemed like a sheep bleating. Marian refers to old ladies as sheep.
She describes the old ladies room as crowded and dark. She thought the whole room smelt wet.
Marian felt she was caught in a robbers cave. She now refers to the old ladies as robbers the first old
lady is very kind and welcoming, whilst the other old lady in bed is moody an quite mean. As a
minister of his religion, the curate feels that it his duty to spread the word of God to Mrs Chundle.
So instead of leaving the situation as it is, the Curate is determined to change Mrs Chundle's faith
more toward God. This is why he got involved with Mrs Chundle. Next morning the Curate strode
across to Mrs Chundle's cottage and confronted her about her lie. He then asked Mrs Chundle to

Against Gun Rights: An Argumentative Essay
Gun Rights 1–Introduction This paper argues the hypothesis that "guns are dangerous and maybe
some terrorists will use these guns to kill in order to be in power". There are lots of persons,
corporations and bureaucrats and those who advocate gun rights who are in total agreement with
free flow of arms. This paper sets out to show why this is very dangerous. Those who do not agree
with these propositions would find ample material to question their views. Thus in length the
hypothesis that is sought to be proved is: "Free availability of arms and arming nations that are
troubled will lead to escalation of terrorism and threats both aboard and at home in the US" The
background Beginning with the recent developments in the Middle East the point can be made.
Sometime in 2010, Saudi Arabia negotiated a "$30–60 billion arms package with the USA that
would give the country 84 F–15 Strike Eagles and F–15A–D fighters, upgrades for another 70
planes, about 132 UH–60 Black Hawk utility and AH–64 attack helicopters, and armaments to equip
them." (Defence Industry Daily, Saudi Shopping Spree: F–15s, Helicopters & More) While the
Arabian state increases and are upgrading their air and missile defenses using American equipment,
and will result in the country's air and ballistic missile defense improvements, the question is what
would the other more radical countries of the Middle East do, especially Iran. This would give an
opportunity for Iran to escalate arms spending and buy

The Holocaust And The Holocaust
For example, a survivor of a concentration camp such as Auschwitz may describe the holocaust as a
living nightmare because of the death and destruction that it caused them and their families, whereas
as SS leaders may have seen this as an opportunity to stamp their authority on the situation and
showcase their leadership skills. One major limitation that comes when trying to represent the
holocaust involves the title that civilization has given to this period of history. Many scholars such
as Bruno Bettelheim criticize the use of the word 'Holocaust' as it is the Greek term for 'sacrifice by
fire', this label is indeed somewhat too similar to the 'final solution' promoted by the Nazis and some
nay feel that it in fact denies the victims of the tragedy their last attempt to be remembered with any
dignity and recognition for their lives that they lived before their murders.
Since the holocaust entered the popular culture in countries such as the USA and Ireland, it was
mere public ignorance that led to a variety of representations of the tragedy that was the holocaust.
One piece of literature that has impacted many peoples' opinion on the holocaust comes from the
diary of Anne Frank, an adolescent girl who was trapped in hiding during the Nazi occupation of her
country. The worldwide popularity of the novel led to over 30 million copies being sold and Andrea
Pitzer believes 'came to represent the American interpretation of the holocaust'. The book offers a
unique representation of the holocaust in the sense that we do not hear any information from her
journey after she is sent to a concentration camp and do not hear any details of her death. The power
and effectiveness of the diary however comes from the historical events that surrounded her account.
Kee Ribbon's believes that Anne Franks diary is 'sequential art' and has been used worldwide to help
people 'get a grip on the transnational representation of the historical conflict(WW2) beyond the
battlefield'. The personal narrative that she provides in her diary also reaches out to that emotional
appeal that hooks the audience in the sense that her in–depth personal experiences interests the
readers like that of the work of speigleman.

On October 8, 1941 Adolf Hitler opened the Auschwitz–Birkenau Concentration Camp. Hitler's

were used for different things. One section was used for labor, another used as gas chambers, and
another used as a crematory. The labor camps at Auschwitz were where the prisoners, that were fit

long–running conflict in the Middle East. The main point of this conflict is the existence of the state
of Israel and its relations with Arab states and with the Palestinian population in the area. The idea
and concept of Israel was born in the mid 19th century. Jews of Europe and America wanted a place
for their homeland, where they could go and be with others of the same race and religion. Palestine

By 1918 both Jews and Arabs believed that they had the right to rule themselves in their own land –
Palestine. However, at the end of war Britain regretted to give independence both Arabs and Jewish.
Palestine became a territory governed by Britain. Increased Jewish immigration led to the worsening
of the relations between communities. Jews were purchasing land and would not employ Arab
workers, who may have been working on that land for their whole life. Britain tried to restrict the
immigration of Jews, but because of the strong Jewish lobby in it's own and US governments could
do nothing. And with the massive increase of Jewish immigrants following the Nazi persecution in
Europe, the idea of restricting immigration lost its sense. Palestine became a refuge from the
dictatorship of the Nazis for Jewish.
After the end of World War II horrible information about Holocaust fled the world. Thousand of
Jews from labor camps had no home to return to. All this caused sympathy for the Jews. In 1947

Topic: To what extent was the Middle East conflict between 1948 to 1978 fuelled by the interests
and concerns of the superpowers in the region?
From 1948 to 1978, in the Middle East, the two superpowers at the time the USA and the USSR
were trying to exert their spheres of influence in the Middle East. Each superpower supported
different sides to the conflict with the USA and the West supporting Israel and any other Arab
country that saw the spread of communism as a threat and the USSR supporting the Arab states that
wanted to destroy the Jewish state. The USA interests in the region were for the oil fields and the
Suez Canal trading root while the USSR saw it as strategic value for the oil supplies to the west and
the important trade roots. Both of the superpowers were supplying their allies in the region with
financial and military aid. The four major wars that were fought during this time 1948 the war of

Jack London : Nature And Figurative Sense Of Pride
The film "To Build a Fire," based on the story by Jack London, visualizes the religious theme of the
short story by symbolizing humanity's disregard for the literal power of nature and figurative sense

The story illustrates the man's denial of the dire situation he has placed himself in. The Merriam
Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature offers a brief synopsis of Jack London's "To Build a Fire,"
originally written in 1902, and published in its final form in 1908 (1995). It describes how the man
ignores the warnings given to him by the old man at Sulphur Creek and attempts to travel a long
distance with no appreciation for the power of nature. The man believes that his intelligence and
guile will allow him to make the treacherous journey with little supplies. Although the man is
intelligent in things, the dog is intelligent in the ways of nature and the cold.
In both the cinematic version and the short story, the setting takes place during the period in the
Yukon when the sun never rises over the horizon to warm the earth. In both, the story begins by
describing the atmosphere as, "cold and grey, exceedingly cold and grey," (176), the man sets out on
his dangerous journey without an inclination to the danger he is walking into. He only realizes that
the temperature is 75 degrees below zero when he spits, and the spittle crackles in the air, rather than
on the ground. He fails to realize that nature does not care for the whim of humans, regardless of
their accomplishments or will to live. In the story, the man is continuously chewing tobacco,
creating a, "crystal beard of the color and solidity of amber" (179). This is an important aspect

a fact that Japanese intent in WWII was all about expansion. Having no natural resources of their
own they needed to take from whomever they could. In fact, they had been preparing for war for
many years prior to their eventual attacks. They have a strong military history and codes of military
honour that allowed them to brutalise their prisoners with no care when they invaded. They did not
consider their enemies as human. This kind of march is one of a great

The Nazi Party: The National Socialist German Workers Party
It all started when the rise of the Nazi Party came. It was under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, and
founded in 1919, and the group was known fully as the National Socialist German Workers Party, or
Nazi Party for short. As time move on, it went on to be much more than a meeting, but into a mass
movement. The movement itself was Anti–Semitism. It dealt with much turmoil with the Treaty of
Versailles, which had helped put an end to the first World War. Once Hitler was given power over
Germany, he began to persuade the people against the Treaty. In 1929, Germany was in a state of
economic depression, and had much unemployment problems for its people. The unemployment rate
had started to increase without any way of controlling it, but once Nazi power hit, it had sworn in
most of its members, this lead them to get 230 out of the 608 seats, which is located in Reichstag.
January 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor, and quickly banned other parties but the Nazi Party.
This made him start to think of ways to eliminate the competition and he created the first
concentration camp for political prisoners in Dachau, Germany, in hopes of controlling his power.
Imperial Japan and Germany signed the Anti–Comintern Pact. This directed against Soviet Union at

Japanese And Japanese Internment Camps Essay
Japanese–Americans were forced to evacuate from coastal areas following the Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor. A massive amount of Americans who were not of Japanese descent believed that the
Japanese community could not be trusted, so the government felt that it was necessary to remove
them from their homes and place them in camps located away from militarized coastal regions. This
was a controversial decision at the time and still receives criticism today for going against typical
American constitutional values centering around citizen's unalienable rights. Through the research
of many letters written during Japanese internment or reflecting on the event, it seems that
Japanese–Americans of that time period had mixed feelings about being relocated and the majority
of the community was upset that they were viewed and treated differently than other Americans but
did acknowledge that the overall treatment they received at camp was fair. Japanese Internment
camps were psychologically damaging to Japanese–Americans due to the racist nature of selective
forced evacuation, and the Japanese community was more upset about being removed from their
homes than how they were treated at camp. The U.S. government was very purposeful in their goal
to make the process of internment seem to be as fair as possible to the Japanese–Americans that
were being relocated. Thomas C. Clark, alien control coordinator at the time, was quoted saying "we
are not going to push them around" in a news

The Thread

  • 1. The Thread The Thread by Victoria Hislop is set in Thessaloniki, Greece. The novel tells the story of the multicultural yet racist city and how the face of the city has changed since the early twentieth century all the way up until today. As Dimitri Komninos is born, a devastating fire sweeps through the thriving Greek city where Christians, Jews and Muslims live side by side. As his father rebuilds their fabric empire first and eventually the showpiece home overlooking the sea, Dimitri and his mother live on Irini Street, in the humble home in which his mother grew up surrounded by all sorts of different and multicultural people. Five years later, Katerina Sarafoglou's a greek whose home in Asia Minor is destroyed by the Turkish army. Losing her mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Just because they have different coloured skin and practice a different religion does that make them someone less than you? In the end without the color and religion barriers aren't you just a human being so why treat each other differently? Why aren't "white people" bullied because of their beliefs? Will racism ever go away? These questions also helped build some connections to world. Some connections I instantly made to the world were about how poorly some people are treat because of their race. In the book Muslims were forced to leave their homes and move because of a political crisis and resettle somewhere else. This is occurring even today. Take America for example. Trump and a larger part of America thinks muslims are "terrorist" and have enforced a muslim ban. This has forced many muslims to reconsider living in USA. Another connections to the world is of genocides. The WW2 genocide mentioned in the book, reminded me of the Rwandan genocide and the terrible aftermath of it. This story makes a lot of connections to the social problems that have been carried on from the 1900's to present ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Us Involvement In The Middle East "BOOM" was the noise that thundered across New York City on the morning of September 11th, 2001. A noise that would forever change the lives of many people. Terrorists associated with Al Qaeda, a group that was founded by Osama Bin Laden, hijacked four airplanes and flew two of them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The third plane collided with the side of the Pentagon, the country's military headquarters, coming in close contact with Washington D.C. The last plane, United Airlines flight 93, was crash landed in an open field in the middle of Pennsylvania. Such a devastating act of terrorism led to public outrage across the nation. It came as no surprise that the government had to respond to its people's distress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After World War II the Soviet Union and the United States rivaled to gain more allies. The United States believed democracy was the best hope for the world. The Soviet Union believed in a rigid communist form of government. Once the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan implementing the Carter Doctrine. The article, Carter Doctrine by Elizabeth Matthews states,"It was acknowledgment that the security of the United States was interdependent with that of the Persian Gulf. The invasion of Afghanistan raised the fear that it was only the first step in a Soviet plan to cut off access of the Western powers to the oil from that region." Meaning the United States protected Afghanistan from the Soviet Union in order to protect the soil. The United States believed that if they did not prevent countries from forming an alliance with the Soviet Union then they would be outnumbered later on causing communist to rule take over the world. Once many countries in the Middle East started receiving large amounts of financial and military aid for more than fifty years, the Middle East soon began to perceive that the Americans believed in freedom for themselves but helped dictators deny freedom to their citizens. For instance, in the book Understanding September 11th by Mitch Frank it states, "The United States government was so focused on keeping the Soviets out of the Middle East that it often ignored the needs ... • 7. Conflict in the Middle East between 1948 and 1978 Between 1948 and 1978 conflict erupted between the Israel and numerous Arab states such as Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. The conflict of the Middle East began shortly after Israel was declared a nation by the United Nations after world war two. The Middle East is an area of great strategic importance. It contains vital trade routes such as that of the Suez Canal, and is rich in oil or "black gold", one of the most important resources of the world, and vital for a country to operate. The two super powers of the world at that point in time were engaged in the cold war, The USSR and USA therefore found the Middle East to be of great importance. They would not fight each other directly as atomic weapons would most likely be used, and therefore mutually assured destruction would come into being. They therefore used the Middle East conflict as an opportunity to fight war by proxy, done by supplying aid, weapons, training and advice to their supported countries and expanding their sphere of influence within the Middle East, so as to try get that area under their control. The USA was a great supporter of Israel due to her many Jewish links, her strong Jewish lobby, and thereby used her to increase her influence within the region. While the USSR supported the Arab states, in an attempt to increase her sphere of influence. Both the Arabs and Israelis were happy to have a greater superpower supporting them, as it gave them the resources to destroy the other side. However when Israel was ... The Holocaust: The Purpose Of The Nazi Party The Nazi party was anti–Semitic, against Jews, and in 1941 with the "final solution plan" the Jews began to be chased by the Gestapo, Hitler secret police, with the objective of killing all the European Jews. This could result strange to everyone because there is no reason for killing them at least we do not see that reason but the Germans did and they saw the Jewish as the guilty of everything that was wrong in the country so the solution was to send them to gethos, Jewish neighborhoods, and then pick them up with the train of the death which final stop were the labor camps were they were killed in many horrible ways. Although before this plan the Jewish were already being persecuted an example of this is "the night of the broken glasses "where In two days, over 250 synagogues were burned, over 7,000 Jewish businesses were trashed and looted, dozens of Jewish people were killed, and Jewish cemeteries, hospitals, schools, and homes were looted while police and fire brigades stood by because a German general was killed in Paris. ... • 11. The Leadership Style of King David Leadership 1 Essay 1 Take one leader in the Bible, other than Jesus, and evaluate his or her leadership style from using the framework of modern thinking on leadership and your own theological reflection. Introduction In her book "Leadership Can Be Taught", Sharon Parks (2005, p.3.) suggests that the study of leadership is "important for the common good" in today's "complex changing world". The term "complex changing world" could easily be used to describe the time covered by the early years of King David as described in 1 Samuel chapter 16 to 2 Samuel chapter 5, and 1 Chronicles chapter 11. This was the beginning of a turbulent Kingship for a dichotomous Israel, at a time of continual external agitation from their enemies. It was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Verse three outlines the start of the forming of David's band of miscreants; "Also joining him was every person who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. He became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him" (NKJV). David is now the leader of an unstructured group of men discontented with the current political situation. They had been wronged and mistreated, were under a curse of debt that they could not pay. They were not trained loyal soldiers, but like David, are so distressed that they have no option left except to run and hide from their problems (Swindoll, 1997, p.74; Epp, 1965, p.56). Psalm 57 indicates that not only were they hiding, but they were angry and wanting vengeance on those they felt had wronged them. Keller (1985, pp. 120,121) suggests that it was in living with these oppressed outcasts that David developed his compassion for those living under oppression. Chapter 23 starts with an acclamation of the transformation that David's band of miscreant had undergone. It appears that David had been training his men into an army of soldiers, and although they had little faith in their own abilities as warriors, they had faith in David as a leader. When he said that they could overthrow the Philistines at Keilah, David's army (now numbering 600) even followed him into what they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cold War Research Paper "The USA and the USSR formed an un unnatural alliance in World War 2 that was bound to fall apart after the defeat of a common enemy" To what extent does this statement explain the origin and development of the Cold War to 1968. The origins of the Cold War, as well as its developments have become one of history's largest debates, with many different answers and opinions. The suggested explanations of these origins and developments all demonstrate different viewpoints of militaristic, political and economical factors. The USA believed solely in the ways of democracy and the rights of every individual, whereas contrastingly the USSR believes in communism, where the state as a whole is more important than the individual. Due to communism, many Soviets believed that the tension between them and the USA was unavoidable. This idea lead to a theory known as the 'two camps theory', where the world was divided into two sides, communist or capitalist. The Soviet Union was convinced that all capitalist countries were attempting to sabotage their country and their political ideology. All conflicts that took part during the Cold War were inevitably caused by the clash of ideologies between two of the world's superpowers. The extent of the USA and USSR's alliance collapse is indefinite as being a cause of the origins and developments of the Cold War. Events such as the arms race and the space race highlight the competitivity between the countries, as they both fought to be the superpower of the world. The development of nuclear weapons also magnified the significance of their rivalry. In Harry Truman's address speaking about his Doctrine he says: "We shall not realize our objectives, however, unless we are willing to help free peoples to maintain their free institutions and their national integrity against aggressive movements that seek to impose upon them totalitarian regimes" . • 15. Arab-Israeli Conflict Essay Arab–Israeli Conflict During the First World War (1914–1918), Britain met with problems concerning promises made, yet not being kept. Britain, knowing that it needed all the help it could get against the German allies, promised land to people who desperately wanted it. However, as it was revealed Britain had no intention of honouring their word. The first promise to be made was to the Arabs, in a desperate attempt to overpower one of the countries the British were fighting; the Turks. The Arab leader, Sherif Hussein, agreed to help defeat the Turks, on the condition that at the end of the war, the Arabs would get their freedom. The British accepted the terms, and in 1915 it was written up in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was, like the McMahon letter to the Arabs, promising the Jews ownership of Palestine. This was, made at a time when Britain was having many problems fighting the allies, and needed all the help they could find. There are a few reasons why historians believe this letter was issued. It was thought that the Jews in America and Russia had a lot of money and power, and so would therefore encourage their governments to continue in the war. There was sympathy for the Zionists, as the leaders like Balfour knew that the Jews had endured a lot of hardship, and suffered many injustices, and so saw this promise as a chance to right some of the wrongs committed. Britain used the Suez Canal, in Egypt. However, it was right next door to Palestine, and so it would greatly benefit Britain if the people who governed the neighbouring Palestine, were friendly towards Britain and their interests. The new leader of the Zionists, Chaim Weizmann, was a friend of a few leading politicians such as Balfour and the present Prime minister, Lloyd George. It is quite probable that the British Government had no idea of the changes that this Declaration would cause on the short and long– term effects on the problems between the Arabs and the Jews. The consequences of these unkept promises were quite terrible for Britain, making their situation in Europe much worse. The Arabs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Historians often attribute the combination of German aggression and foreign appeasement with the Nazi rise to power and success in completing the Final Solution. However, the power of the totalitarian regime originated from its domestic policy, allowing one man to manipulate the thoughts and actions of an entire nation. In addition, the perceived communist threat compelled Hindenburg to pass the Reichstag Fire Decree, nullifying all civil liberties and providing the Nazi Party with the freedom to use violence against any minority or dissenter without repercussion. Political propaganda elevated the status of the party while slandering opponents, providing the Nazi Party with sufficient influence to initiate the Final Solution. However, Nazi propaganda also deceived other nations about the intensity of persecution and militarization in Germany, delaying attempts at foreign diplomacy and military responses. The Nazi Party tailored propaganda to influence foreign perspectives of Germany and directed many of attempts, including the Theresienstadt masquerade, to depict the tolerable nature of life in concentration camps ("Propaganda, Nazi"). Meanwhile, propaganda films such as Triumph des Willens portrayed the German army as a peaceful assembly of workers fighting against the poverty and unemployment of the depression. Foreign propaganda made other nations disregard Nazi violation of the Treaty of Versailles, allowing Hitler to surprise Europe with a series of unstoppable blitzkrieg attacks and distract other nations from his plans for the Final Solution. • 19. The Usa Patriot Act : What 's So Patriotic About Trampling... After the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001 the United States became a very different place. This drastic change was caused by the initial emotional reactions that American citizens, as well as government leaders had towards the tragic event. The government, in an effort to assure that these events never happen again passed the USA PATRIOT Act, which is an acronym that stands for the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act. The major goal of this act is to combat terrorism by giving the government more leeway in what areas they are allowed to use their surveillance tools and also to what circumstances these tools can be used. The major issue that arise with this act are the fact that many of the act can be seen as unconstitutional. In Nancy Chang's article, USA PATRIOT Act: What's So Patriotic About Trampling on the Bill of Rights?, she explains all the changes that the act has made, specifically in terms of the language that the act itself uses to describe it's new power (2001:1–15) . Chang's description of the act, in its entirety, is that the act was "hastily– drafted, complex, and far–reaching legislation" which explains why the language in this act is so controversial (2001:1). The Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis is defined by Richard H. Robbins as the idea that there is an explicit link between the grammar of language and the culture of the people who speak that ... Under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, and founded in 1919, the National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazi Party, grew into much more than a meeting on the streets. It grew into a mass movement. The movement itself was Anti–Semitism and had much turmoil with the Treaty of Versailles. It had helped put an end to the first World War. Once Hitler was given power over Germany, he swiftly persuaded the people against the Treaty. In 1929, Germany was in a state of economic depression, and unemployment. Despite its short period of existence however, this east Asian country has managed to crawl its way into worldwide spotlight for its totalitarian–style government, robust nuclear weapons programs, and prevalent use of crimes against humanity. For outsiders looking in, the nation appears to be at its tipping point, with the possibility of revolt waiting around every corner. However, for North Korean citizens, a well–structured and large–scale rebellion may seem both impossible and unnecessary. Currently commanded by the infamous, baby–faced Kim Jong Un, the communist regime works tirelessly to advance the political state of North Korea within the world, while simultaneously restricting their people from reaching autonomy, economic success, and enlightenment to their rulers' wrongdoings. To better understand how a nation as segregated and restrictive as North Korea can remain intact, this paper will explore how the DPRK uses propaganda and the restriction of communication to control its people. To better recognize how and why the North Korean government operates the way it does, it is crucial to understand how the nation was formed. Prior to World War II, the Korean Peninsula was under the rule of the Japanese, devoid of what we know today as North Korea and South Korea (New World Encyclopedia, 2014). ... • 51. US Interest In The Middle East American involvement, interests, and policies in the Middle East have changed dramatically over the past 220–plus years. And if one had to trace how exactly it has changed, the issue of oil and Israel would be at the center. United States foreign policy in the Middle East goes back to the end of the 18th century. It started on the wrong foot with the Barbary Wars right after America was established. The shape of American interests in the Middle East at that time was not so clear, mainly because political and military relations were minimal. Although there were some commercial ties with some Arab countries and Persia, basically American involvement and interests in the Middle East prior to WW I was limited. In the early 1900s, American companies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning, England knew about the Middle East's sources of oil, but oil was not a major source of energy until England created a battleship that ran by fuel. Once England had a need for oil, every other power followed along, including the United States; oil became an required component in industrialization. The need for oil in the whole world increased; America targeted the ME region because it had more than 40% of the oil reserve in the world. For Americans, oil became the most important source of energy, and the most important tool for America to get return capital and to advance technology. The USA developed its own sources of oil, but their need was greater than the sources available, and the ME seemed to have endless amount of oil and endless need of spending its revenues on buildings and not focused on improving the area or make any use of all that money before oil run out ... • 53. Essay on Japanese American Internment Camps Was the internment of Japanese Americans a compulsory act of justice or was it an unwarranted, redundant act of tyranny which breached upon the rights of Japanese Americans? During World War II thousands of Japanese Americans were told by government officials that they had twenty–four hours to pack their things, get rid of any belongings of theirs, and to sell their businesses away for less than retail value. Although many people thought the Japanese American internment was needed to ensure U.S. security during the war against Japan, these relocation centers were unnecessary violations of Japanese Americans' rights. They enforced security and warned others of the spoils of war. Although Japanese American internment camps provided a safe harbor for Americans in knowing that the U.S. government was safe from sabotage, it was an unjustified infringement upon the rights of Japanese Americans. The first amendment states that "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech" (The Bill of Rights). These Japanese had no say when they were being taken away to these camps. This euphemistically termed "evacuation" was "a time of chaos and trauma for Japanese Americans" (Japanese American Internment). Firstly, Japanese families had "scant time" to dispose of homes, businesses, pets, and belongings (Japanese American Internment). Men, women, and children were rushed onto trains with no knowledge of what was going on, and transported to concentration camps in Santa Anita Racetrack, "only on the first day" (The Internment of Japanese Americans). These Japanese Americans never gave their consent to be transported to these camps. If they tried to escape or defied their orders, they were jailed, or for some, even worse. The conditions in them were atrocious; some families were housed in "horse stalls at racetracks" and "cattle pens at fairgrounds" (Japanese American Incarceration). • 55. The Atomic Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki Essay The atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 is the most controversial military decision in the history of Air Power, and may even be the most controversial decision in history. The first of the bombings happened at Hiroshima, where the B–29 Superfortress Enola Gay dropped Little Boy, an Uranium–based atomic bomb. Structural damage estimates vary, with some sources claiming the blast and fires destroyed about 90% of the city (History.com Staff "Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki") and some estimating a little more than a third of the buildings were destroyed or severely damaged (""The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki."). Most sources estimate about a third of the population of the 300,000–person city died in the immediate explosion (Wright), with tens of thousands more dying in the subsequent days as a result of wounds and radiation. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki led directly to the unconditional surrender of the Japanese Empire and the end of World War 2, and indirectly caused the Cold War between the United States and the USSR. Initially, historians took Churchill and Truman's justifications that the bomb was dropped to end the war quickly, and that was the end of the argument. Throughout time, revisionists have challenged that notion and argued that the bombs were not necessary for ending the war in Japan in a timely fashion, and it was merely an unethical, immoral show of power to the Soviets at the expense of the Japanese ... • 59. Against Gun Rights: An Argumentative Essay Gun Rights 1–Introduction This paper argues the hypothesis that "guns are dangerous and maybe some terrorists will use these guns to kill in order to be in power". There are lots of persons, corporations and bureaucrats and those who advocate gun rights who are in total agreement with free flow of arms. This paper sets out to show why this is very dangerous. Those who do not agree with these propositions would find ample material to question their views. Thus in length the hypothesis that is sought to be proved is: "Free availability of arms and arming nations that are troubled will lead to escalation of terrorism and threats both aboard and at home in the US" The background Beginning with the recent developments in the Middle East the point can be made. Sometime in 2010, Saudi Arabia negotiated a "$30–60 billion arms package with the USA that would give the country 84 F–15 Strike Eagles and F–15A–D fighters, upgrades for another 70 planes, about 132 UH–60 Black Hawk utility and AH–64 attack helicopters, and armaments to equip them." (Defence Industry Daily, Saudi Shopping Spree: F–15s, Helicopters & More) While the Arabian state increases and are upgrading their air and missile defenses using American equipment, and will result in the country's air and ballistic missile defense improvements, the question is what would the other more radical countries of the Middle East do, especially Iran. This would give an opportunity for Iran to escalate arms spending and buy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. The Holocaust And The Holocaust For example, a survivor of a concentration camp such as Auschwitz may describe the holocaust as a living nightmare because of the death and destruction that it caused them and their families, whereas as SS leaders may have seen this as an opportunity to stamp their authority on the situation and showcase their leadership skills. One major limitation that comes when trying to represent the holocaust involves the title that civilization has given to this period of history. Many scholars such as Bruno Bettelheim criticize the use of the word 'Holocaust' as it is the Greek term for 'sacrifice by fire', this label is indeed somewhat too similar to the 'final solution' promoted by the Nazis and some nay feel that it in fact denies the victims of the tragedy their last attempt to be remembered with any dignity and recognition for their lives that they lived before their murders. Since the holocaust entered the popular culture in countries such as the USA and Ireland, it was mere public ignorance that led to a variety of representations of the tragedy that was the holocaust. One piece of literature that has impacted many peoples' opinion on the holocaust comes from the diary of Anne Frank, an adolescent girl who was trapped in hiding during the Nazi occupation of her country. The worldwide popularity of the novel led to over 30 million copies being sold and Andrea Pitzer believes 'came to represent the American interpretation of the holocaust'. The book offers a unique representation of the holocaust in the sense that we do not hear any information from her journey after she is sent to a concentration camp and do not hear any details of her death. The power and effectiveness of the diary however comes from the historical events that surrounded her account. Kee Ribbon's believes that Anne Franks diary is 'sequential art' and has been used worldwide to help people 'get a grip on the transnational representation of the historical conflict(WW2) beyond the battlefield'. The personal narrative that she provides in her diary also reaches out to that emotional appeal that hooks the audience in the sense that her in–depth personal experiences interests the readers like that of the work of speigleman. Hitler's main goal was to exterminate every Jew, artist, educator, Gypsy, communist, homosexual, mentally and physically handicapped person, and everyone else that is seen as not good enough for Nazi Germany. There were many other concentration camps during the Holocaust, but the Auschwitz– Birkenau was the harshest one of all. Inside Auschwitz–Birkenau there were different sections that were used for different things. One section was used for labor, another used as gas chambers, and another used as a crematory. The labor camps at Auschwitz were where the prisoners, that were fit for work, were forced to work on projects around the camp. • 65. The Israel-Palestine Conflict Essay The Israel–Palestine Conflict The Israeli–Palestinian conflict is a part of the greater Arab–Israeli long–running conflict in the Middle East. The main point of this conflict is the existence of the state of Israel and its relations with Arab states and with the Palestinian population in the area. The idea and concept of Israel was born in the mid 19th century. Jews of Europe and America wanted a place for their homeland, where they could go and be with others of the same race and religion. Palestine was chosen because of its religious routs from The Bible as the "promised land" from God, and the motherland of Jews fled, known as the Diaspora. By the late 19th century there was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By 1918 both Jews and Arabs believed that they had the right to rule themselves in their own land – Palestine. However, at the end of war Britain regretted to give independence both Arabs and Jewish. Palestine became a territory governed by Britain. Increased Jewish immigration led to the worsening of the relations between communities. Jews were purchasing land and would not employ Arab workers, who may have been working on that land for their whole life. Britain tried to restrict the immigration of Jews, but because of the strong Jewish lobby in it's own and US governments could do nothing. And with the massive increase of Jewish immigrants following the Nazi persecution in Europe, the idea of restricting immigration lost its sense. Palestine became a refuge from the dictatorship of the Nazis for Jewish. After the end of World War II horrible information about Holocaust fled the world. Thousand of Jews from labor camps had no home to return to. All this caused sympathy for the Jews. Jack London : Nature And Figurative Sense Of Pride The film "To Build a Fire," based on the story by Jack London, visualizes the religious theme of the short story by symbolizing humanity's disregard for the literal power of nature and figurative sense of pride in the intelligence of being human. The Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature offers a brief synopsis of Jack London's "To Build a Fire," originally written in 1902, and published in its final form in 1908 (1995). It describes how the man ignores the warnings given to him by the old man at Sulphur Creek and attempts to travel a long distance with no appreciation for the power of nature. The man believes that his intelligence and guile will allow him to make the treacherous journey with little supplies. Although the man is intelligent in things, the dog is intelligent in the ways of nature and the cold. In both the cinematic version and the short story, the setting takes place during the period in the Yukon when the sun never rises over the horizon to warm the earth. In both, the story begins by describing the atmosphere as, "cold and grey, exceedingly cold and grey," (176), the man sets out on his dangerous journey without an inclination to the danger he is walking into. He only realizes that the temperature is 75 degrees below zero when he spits, and the spittle crackles in the air, rather than on the ground. He fails to realize that nature does not care for the whim of humans, regardless of their accomplishments or will to live. It was under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, and founded in 1919, and the group was known fully as the National Socialist German Workers Party, or Nazi Party for short. As time move on, it went on to be much more than a meeting, but into a mass movement. The movement itself was Anti–Semitism. • 77. Japanese And Japanese Internment Camps Essay Japanese–Americans were forced to evacuate from coastal areas following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. A massive amount of Americans who were not of Japanese descent believed that the Japanese community could not be trusted, so the government felt that it was necessary to remove them from their homes and place them in camps located away from militarized coastal regions. This was a controversial decision at the time and still receives criticism today for going against typical American constitutional values centering around citizen's unalienable rights. Through the research of many letters written during Japanese internment or reflecting on the event, it seems that Japanese–Americans of that time period had mixed feelings about being relocated and the majority of the community was upset that they were viewed and treated differently than other Americans but did acknowledge that the overall treatment they received at camp was fair. Japanese Internment camps were psychologically damaging to Japanese–Americans due to the racist nature of selective forced evacuation, and the Japanese community was more upset about being removed from their homes than how they were treated at camp. The U.S. government was very purposeful in their goal to make the process of internment seem to be as fair as possible to the Japanese–Americans that were being relocated. Thomas C. Clark, alien control coordinator at the time, was quoted saying "we are not going to push them around" in a news ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
