Hockey Team Research Paper
Although there are many NHL teams, I think the Kings are the best. If you're wondering what the
NHL is, your in the right place. The NHL is the national hockey league. The NHL is composed of
two conferences East and West. The Kings are in the Western conference. The Kings are the best
team in the NHL because they have great offense, they have great defense and they are the best team
to watch. The King's offense is one of their keys to success. On April 18, 2016 the Kings beat the
San Jose Sharks. Tanner Pearson got the game winning goal from an assist from Dustin Brown and
Vincent Lecavalier. Cbs Sports said, under pressure Brown was focused on assisting goal that drew
the score. On offense the Kings are not afraid to check their opponents.

Detroit Red Wings Case Study
In Hockey Town, there's only one team to root for –– the Detroit Red Wings. The team currently
resides just a luxury sedan or limo ride away at Joe Louis Arena, located in downtown Detroit. Here
are some team historical highlights:
1920s – The Red Wings go all the way back to the old Western Hockey League, when the Victoria
(British Columbia) Cougars were sold to a group from Detroit on September 25, 1926. The team
played its home games in Windsor, Ontario. The Victoria Cougars had won the Stanley Cup in 1925
and were Cup finalists in 1926, but the Detroit Cougars finished 12–28–4; the NHL's worst record
for the 1926–27 season.

Why One Hockey Player Can Make A World Of Difference
By: Jami Ness As a Canadian, hockey is something very important to me and my family. Especially
the Calgary Flames. When I was younger, the Calgary Flames never made the Stanley Cup Playoffs,
that was something very frustrating for all Flames fans. This all changed when Sean Monahan was
drafted in 2013 and turned the franchise around. Sean was a resilient child that showed throughout
his hockey career. Sean made the Calgary Flames a true playoff contender by bringing more
offensive power to them than they've ever seen. This truly changed the Calgary Flames and how the
city of Calgary and fans from all around view hockey and many kids are inspired to be as good as
Sean. Sean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By this point he was a well known centreman. He started off his first season with a bang by
obtaining 6 goals in the first 9 games. He has made the playoffs twice out of four seasons with the
Flames. In his second playoff run, he got 4 goals second to Sidney Crosby's winger, Jake Guentzel.
He also got his 100th goal this year, being the youngest flame to achieve it and the 6th youngest
NHLer right under very acclaimed players like Kane and Stamkos. He was recognized as a
upcoming tremendous hockey player and was invited to play in the 2011 17U hockey challenge and
was a key role in Team Toronto winning. By this point in time, Sean was well known across the
National Hockey League as a centreman who knew how to score, set up plays, and run a great
powerplay line effortlessly. Even though Monahan has been in the NHL for 4 years he continues to
have the same power and speed he originally came with. The fan–base for the Flames has grown
tremendously; especially with kids since Sean was drafted. Everytime I go to Calgary for a hockey
game, I see more Monahan jerseys than anyone else because he is what every kid wants to become,
a fast hockey player who scores; lots. The game has changed since 2013, and it's all because of Sean
Monahan. Although there are many players who score as often, if not more often than Sean, what
sets him apart is his drive, intelligence, speed and agility. Sean monahan has changed the game for
all fans, players who play with and players

The American Influence On Canada
For many decades, writers and authors have accused the American influence on Canada as one of
the reasons why Canada is losing its heritage, with one major aspect being the game of hockey. The
institutionalization of American Culture began to take root in Canada during the late 1920's and
1930s as technological advances, specifically the invention of the radio, allowed Canadians to enjoy
American entertainment. American stations were much more reliable than Canadian ones, causing
American sporting stations such as NBC and CBS to become extremely popular in Canada (Gruneau
et al, 1993). As Canada was becoming intertwined with the United States (U.S.), it was becoming
less of a satellite of Britain, which made it tremendously difficult for Canada's elite to protect British
ideals such as self–improvement and participating in sport for the game's sake. (Gruneau et al,
1993). In the early 1940's, after the great depression forced many franchises to dismantle, the
National Hockey League (NHL) was left with six teams, which made up the famous "original six."
At this time, America had a strong influence on the game, as four of the original six teams were
based in the United States, and all of the players in league were paid in American dollars (Gruneau
et al, 1993). By the early 1960's, televised sports were emerging in North America, and NHL players
were becoming mainstream stars. Inspired by this, along with the threat of the NHL losing its
television contract to the Western

History Of The NHL
Hockey, a one–hundred, and forty–two–year–old sport, that has captured the attention of many for
as long as it has existed. Despite the age of the sport, the National Hockey League (or NHL) has
only been in the United States for ninety–three years. The NHL had set a basis for the game and also
supported the rise of many teams and secured a forever spot in sports history. The first American
team to be incorporated into the national league, the Boston Bruins, have been one of the longest
standing teams in US history. Even though the game existed in the country before the NHL came
around, the organization brought life to one of the most famous teams of the twenty–first century.

During this game the Boston played against one of Montreal's teams; the Maroons. Not many people
attended the game due to the lack of intrigue the 1920's held for it. When the game was set to start
only a handful of people took to the stands. Boston being only a month old, and the only American
representative team, the game brought intrigue. "The Bruins trailed 1–0 after the first period, they
rallied back in the second frame, scoring two goals en route to defeating their fellow expansionists
2–1" ("Boston Bruins Host NHL's First Game In U.S"). The score of the game seemed to be a strong
start for the newborn team, however, it was just the beginning of their downfall. After their first, the
Bruins lost every game in the season until the next year. With the help of this game, as well as the
encouragement of hockey fans, more teams were born. During 1924 there were four well–known
teams in the seven–year–old NHL. "The original teams included the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal
Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Arenas" as well as the Quebec Bulldogs ("Hockey Basics"
9). Although these early groups were popular in the twenty's only the name of the Montreal
Canadiens and Ottawa Senators have lived to see the light of day in the two–thousands. Canada was

Marketing The National Hockey League
In early August 1995 Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the NHL, Stephen Solomon, COO of the
NHL, and Rick Dudley, COO of NHL Enterprises,1 met in their New York office to chart a strategy
for marketing the NHL in 1995 and beyond. After a spectacular 1993–94 season, the NHL's 1994–
95 season had been somewhat mixed; the league had suffered a labor dispute and played an
abbreviated season. But there had been important achievements. For the first time in over 20 years
the NHL had a network television contract in the United States. Fan support for the shortened season
had been surprisingly resilient with attendance averaging 95% for the league ... Show more content

As one NHL team general manager remarked, "You have 10 big men moving at 30 mph, chasing a 3
inch diameter puck, and shooting it at 100 mph, so sometimes you lose sight of the puck if you're
new to the game. But if you are a fan, what a thrill it can be." The 26 teams in the league are
organized into an Eastern and Western Conference. Within each of the conferences are two
divisions: the Atlantic and the Northeast in the Eastern Conference, and the Central and the Pacific
in the Western Conference. The teams play an 82–game regular season from October to April,
followed by four rounds of playoffs where teams play a bestof–seven game series to advance to the
next round. The eight teams in each conference with the best regular season records (including
division leaders) play three rounds to determine the conference winner. Finally, the two conference
champions compete for the Stanley Cup, the trophy awarded for over a century to North America 's
best hockey team.
History
The National Hockey League was formed in 1917, from teams that took the ice that season. During
the following two decades teams entered and exited, leaving six survivors by 1943, (Montreal
Canadiens, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, and
Toronto Maple Leafs) who went on to be known as "The Original Six." These teams were extremely
successful and responsible for much of hockey's lore and legend. From 1947–1951 the Toronto

If he 's traded, the new team would absorb the hit but it would revert back to the Devils after he
retired. Teams could no longer get rid of a cap hit by burying a player in the minors as the New York

level contracts, down from the current three years and down from the originally proposed five.
Unrestricted free agency at 28 or eight years, up from 27 or seven years, and down from the

players getting paid too much coming out of their entry–level deals. During a contract, the salary
couldn 't vary by more than 5% in any year from the first–year number. This would eliminate the
so–called diveback contract that pays a lot up front and lowers the cap hit with low salaries at the
end. Salary arbitration would not be eliminated, as first proposed. A third–party arbitrator would be
appointed if a player was unhappy with the current appeals result on a suspension. The players had
been upset that there was no appeal process after Brendan Shanahan ruled and Bettman handled the
appeal. The NHLPA is working on a counter–proposal and is expected to meet with the league on

Considering the significant effect that hockey has on the Canadian economy, the millions of
Canadians entertained, and the countless decades of celebrated, memorable history, hockey should
be named Canada's true national sport. As a result of the effect that it has on the Canadian economy,
hockey should be named Canada's true national sport. Accounting for roughly one–third of the
National Hockey Leagues ticket sale revenue, the seven Canadian hockey teams have a much larger
market than the 23 American teams. Not including the newly added Winnipeg Jets, the six Canadian
teams account for 31% of the $1.2 billion (U.S) sales ticket revenue of the NHL. This means that
$341,000,000.00 (U.S) is contributing to the Canadian economy annually. The Toronto Maple Leafs
has the largest franchise revenue at an estimated $119,000,000.00. The ticket revenue of the Toronto
Maple Leafs is the highest in the NHL at $1.5 million per game. This is an astonishing amount in
comparison to the Dallas Stars at $660,000. The construction of sport facilities could cost upwards
to over $1 billion (U.S). With this in mind, Canadian hockey facilities (e.g.: the Air Canada Centre
in Toronto, Ontario) revenue millions of dollars annually and creates thousands of jobs. Costing
$265 million to build, the Air Canada Centre generates revenue of nearly $23 million annually.

From 2005/06 to 2014/15, the National Hockey League's (NHL) revenue has grown from $2.27
billion US to $3.98 billion US. A large portion of this is due to the fact that the world of hockey is
constantly changing in many aspects. The way it is played, the way we watch, the way it is coached,
and the way players are scouted and traded. Almost everything on the operations, media, player, and
fan experience side have gone through changes and alterations because of technology. Technology
has opened up a plethora of doors within the sport and has had such a big impact on not just
revenues but other areas as well. One of the largest affects come on the fan experience and
involvement side. Changes outside of actual gameplay such as this one are often driven by revenue
but are ultimately acted on by the current technology in today's digital society. In order to find out
the extent of these changes, three questions must be answered. How has the viewing experience and
accessibility changed for fans, how has the media and technology affected fan engagement, and has
today's digital society taken away from any of hockey's tradition. Today's digital society is
constantly affecting the NHL and world of professional hockey's fan experience and involvement
because of technological offerings and advancements used by members of the industry in profit
driven efforts. Convenience is a leading factor in today's business world. Consumers are often

profession team is called the National Hockey League (NHL), where there are over 25 teams in the
league. This sport is really rough and competitive, it's mostly a men 's sport. If women were to play
in the NHL they would be a huge role model. They have women hockey leagues, but they don't have

As a sport industry women are just beginning, and that means we will be seeing more women
entering the sport field. Jen Welter, is now the first female coach in NFL history, she will be the

make their appearance, but it's a real struggle. These women are helping shape the game by being
coaches, but what about them playing. Especially with hockey, since it's a fast paced game, with a
lot of roughhousing and really big guys. For women to enter the NHL they are going to have to be
ready for a challenge. It would make us have a different outlook on the way the game is played.
There have been a few females to play in professional hockey, just not in a full season with an NHL

National Hockey League : A Best Professional Ice Hockey Nhl
The National Hockey League, with its headquarters in New York City the NHL is considered to be
the best professional ice–hockey league in the world. The NHL was established in 1917 with a
handful of teams located in the greater Montreal and Toronto areas, the league played it's first game
on December 19th 1917. Teams and franchise came and left the NHL over the next few short years
due to funding issues, lack of interest, and for the Montreal Wanderers it was the fact that they had
nowhere to play being that their home rink Montreal Arena burned down causing them to cease
operations. Finally after many franchises had came and gone, including some in the United States, in
1924 the NHL narrowed their league down to 6 teams. The "Original Six" they are known as, the 4
U.S. teams being the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, & the New York
Rangers, accompanied by their 2 neighbors of the north being; the Toronto Maple Leafs, & the
Montreal Canadians. Over the years since the "Original Six" was enacted in 1942, and was
successful as a professional sports league in North America, many people wanted in on it. The
Western Hockey League (WHL) was established in 1952 as a minor–pro ice–hockey league,
combining with other small minor–pro leagues over the years the league gained a following, along
with some big market cities like; Seattle, San Francisco and Vancouver. By the late 1950's the WHL

In the first game against Calgary, Morenz scored a hat trick as the Canadiens won by a score of 6–1.

six playoff games, as Montreal lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Victoria Cougars of the WCHL.
Morenz tied with linemate Aurèle Joliat in leading the Canadiens in scoring in 1925–26 with 26

Case Analysis
Case brief and overview:
Sher–Wood (formerly Sherwood–Drolet) has been a well–known Canadian hockey equipment
manufacturer since 1949 (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23), predominantly specialising in wooden
sticks for players from the National Hockey League down to players at the junior level. Sher–Wood
also produces composite sticks, albeit at a much lower volume.
Whilst hockey stick production has traditionally been based in North America, over the last decade
there has been a significant shift towards global sourcing in the industry (Zhang & Beamish, 2011,
p.21). This has been driven by a desire to access low–cost factors of production, secure cheaper
material resources, and ultimately gain a competitive advantage.
Sher–Wood's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In comparison, Sher–Wood offers specific products for a niche market. Despite this, Sher–Wood
offers 27 models of player and goalie sticks – a considerably large amount for a company with a
global market share of approximately 2% (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20).
Secondly, composite sticks have been the dominant stick used among NHL players over the past
decade (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.18), and as such have grown rapidly in popularity amongst
children and amateur players (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.19). Despite the fact that Sher–Wood
anticipates the composite stick business to grow in volume and profitability, there is a sufficient
imbalance between market demand and Sher–Wood's product output, since wooden sticks still
account for approximately half of their hockey stick models. (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 24)
Further to this, Sher–Wood's brand image and reputation are diminishing. This was affected by the
loss of NHL star Jason Spezza to rival Reebok in 2008 in objection to the company's outsourcing to
China (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23). Currently only 2.3% of NHL players use Sherwood sticks
(Exhibit 1, Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20). This is a concern for Sher–Wood, especially since
"hockey sticks endorsed by professional hockey players enjoyed a strong position in the hocket stick
market." (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 19) Related to this issue is the fact that the market is showing

and have had a concussion before have a 300% higher chance of having another one in comparison
to athletes that have never had a concussion before (Jolicoeur et al, 2007). The NFL and NCAA
have enacted several rule changes in order to minimize the occurrence of concussions. These new
rules, like many before them, have come under the scrutiny of the very athletes that they were meant
to protect. The NHL and NHL Players Association in 1997 together created a program in order to
get a better understanding of concussions and how to prevent them (Burke et al, 2011). According to
Covassin (2008), athletes who have had more than one concussion take a longer time to recover
with each concussion that they suffer from.
NHL players suffer concussions at a very high rate. In 1997, the number of concussions among NHL
players suffered during games was reported at 559. This does not include incidences where the
player didn't inform the team physician of symptoms that he was having, which would have made
this number a lot higher. Players actually lost consciousness in 18% of these cases. Fortunately,
there has been a significant improvement in these numbers over the last several years. The rates that
these injuries are occurring have

The Americans suspended operations in the fall of 1942, leaving the
NHL with just six teams. Despite various efforts to initiate expansion after the war, including
attempted restarts of the Maroons and Americans franchises, the league's membership would remain
at six teams for the next twenty–five seasons.
By the 1960s, however, it was becoming obvious that if the NHL did not expand, a rival league
would take its place. In the
United States the American Football League was starting to become very successful at the time,
convincing many people that a rival hockey league would also succeed. In particular, the Western
Hockey League had moved into a number of major Pacific Coast markets, and had accumulated
strong rosters with talent barred from the static rosters of the NHL. This, plus the prospect of
television contracts, convinced the six owners to go ahead with expansion.

The very first official NHL All–Star Game was held a long, long time ago – in the 1947–48 NHL
season. And many things have changed in those 62 years – the format of the All–Star Game, rules
etc. But there have also been "unofficial" ALL–Star games, like the Hod Stuart Benefit All–Star
Game in 1908 between Montreal Wanderers and the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association
stars. It was something similar to the modern All–Star Games, but they were held for a beneficial
reason. So this first game was in honour of Hod Stuart who was a IPHL (International Professional
Hockey League – the predecessor of NHL) player who had drowned just after winning the Stanley
Cup. And til 1947 there have been several more beneficial All–Star Games like this.

Gordie Howe And Wayne Gretzky
Both Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky have been very influential to the NHL and to the world. But
which is more influential than the other. Gordie Howe grew up in a hard working family with little
money. Growing up had had to battle through adversity on numerous occasions, including being cut
from the first travel hockey team he tried out for. He went from not being good enough to make a
kids team to arguably being the best player ever. Wayne Gretzky throughout his whole life was a
talented hockey player. During his youth he would play with kids that were 4 years older than him
because his own age was not enough competition. From when he was 4 to when he was 38, Wayne
Gretzky was always the best hockey player on the ice. Although both are a large influence in the
world, Gordie Howe was more influential than Wayne Gretzky. Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky
were influential through the charitable impacts. Wayne Gretzky has influenced the world through his
Wayne Gretzky foundation. The Wayne Gretzky foundation is beneficial to many groups. The

Comparison Of Terry Fox And Maurice Richard
Terry Fox and Maurice Richard Canada's history is rich with leaders willing to bring change. Terry
Fox and Maurice Richard are two different notable Canadians who both had similar historical
significance and leadership abilities. This essay will be addressing their historical significance
through the quantity of lives they affected across the country and the durability of the impacts still
evident today, and their leadership ability of displaying determination by showing resilience in the
face of adversity. Terry Fox affected the lives of many across the country. For instance, Terry Fox
helped cancer patients by increasing their chances of survival with the money he raised from the
Marathon of Hope (terryfox.org). Terry also gave cancer patients courage, and inspired hope to see
that cancer does not kill their spirit (rw.runnersworld.com). Furthermore, Terry is an inspiration to
cancer researchers, scientists, clinicians, and countless students across the country. "Cancer
researcher Dr. Ling, who wears a Terry Fox T–shirt as his pajamas as a reminder of who he is and
what he's done, told VICE Sports. 'That is the impact that he had on myself'" (sports.vice.com).
Evidently, Terry affected virtually every Canadian's life. Almost one in every two Canadians is
expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and one in four Canadians will die from the

Just weeks earlier, at a Winthrop youth hockey game, Paul Johnson, 39, of Melrose, was charged
with assaulting a 19–year–old hockey referee, Mark Ceruolo, in a Feb. 29 game at Winthrop's
Lawrence N. Larsen Rink.
"I let my emotions get the best of me when I saw my son get hit from behind," Johnson said in a
written public apology. "He got hit so hard that his full–face helmet went flying off. At the time I
thought he would have been seriously injured.
"I never should have reacted that way nor yelled 'that's my son,' at the referee," Johnson continued.
"I am very sorry."
Following the hit, and without a stoppage of play being called, Johnson allegedly grabbed Ceruolo
by the neck, trying to pull him into the Melrose team bench.
Winthrop police filed an application for a criminal complaint against Johnson but the matter was
dropped when a clerk at the East Boston District Court declined to act on the matter due to Ceruolo's
unwillingness to pursue the matter.
Massachusetts Hockey, the governing body of youth hockey in the state, banned Johnson from

Outliers : The Story Of Success
We are presented with a theory that there aren't any successful self–made people, which we know is
contrary to popular beliefs. This theory was presented by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, Outliers:
The Story of Success. The theory is further defined by the premise that holds that success is enabled
by a person's culture, environment, when and where they were born, and a strong work ethic. These
theories and examples of success are analyzed using the textbook, Leadership: Research Findings,
Practice, and Skills (2015) by Andrew DuBrin. Several examples are provided in this paper that
illustrate and support Gladwell's thoughts on opportunity and cultural legacy.
An Analysis of Outliers: The Story of Success
Outliers is Malcolm Gladwell 's examination of what makes some people excessively more
successful than others. These "outliers," as he calls them, are commonly thought to possess talent
and intelligence far above that of the average person, but he challenges this popular belief by
looking at the background of some notable outliers.
Further, he argues that people are more a product of their environment, culture, life experiences and
even when a person was born. Andrew DuBrin textbook provides theories and concepts of
leadership that can be correlated to the actions of the good people mentioned in Gladwell's book. It
would make sense to say that the success of individuals would come from something more than
what is within the individual.

As of today, only Casey Bailey, a 6–3, 26–year old wing who spent last year in the Ottawa

What Snow did for Hamonic was admirable, and showed loyalty, first and foremost, to the person

Praise Of Bill Peters, Coach Of The Carolina Hurricanes
In Praise of Bill Peters
Now firmly into his third season as a head coach in the NHL, Bill Peters, coach of the Carolina
Hurricanes, has a lot of work in front of him to get this team into post–season contention. Through
his first two years with the organization, Peters is still yet to participate in the playoffs. In fact, it has
been seven years since Carolina last saw the playoffs.
Peters ' current lack of post–season success shouldn 't be an immediate point for concern, as he came
into the team during a major recession in terms of team talent. Most notably offensive stars
Alexander Semin and Eric Staal both had major drops in terms of point production during Peters'
first two seasons, both see their way out of Carolina.
It appears though for this season the pieces are beginning to fall into place for Peters' vision of this
team. Their level of play over the past few games has been as high as it has ever been in recent
years, as the team as a whole is able to play effectively in all ends.
This quick turnover time shouldn 't come as a shock to anyone given Bill Peters outstanding
performances behind the bench for other teams.
Spokane Chiefs
Bill Peters' first major coaching job came in Major Junior as an assistant coach for the Spokane
Chiefs of the WHL. The Three Hills native would serve there as an assistant under then head coach,
and current Toronto head coach Mike Babcock from 1996–2000, helping Spokane reach a 100 point

Derek Boogaard: A Boy Learns To Brawl Analysis
John Branch, in his work, "Derek Boogaard: A Boy Learns to Brawl", examines the life of Derek

enforcers. Branch highlight the difficult road for NHL enforcers, the physical toll on enforcer's
bodies, and the hidden damages an enforcer deals even after a career. The reading by Branch on
Boogaard begins with an introduction of a quick story on Boogaards first fight then takes a turn to
how his life was cut short in the prime of his career. The story continues with a life story about the
rocky road to success Boogaard faced. Boogaard grew up playing on various competitive teams in
Canada, but was only picked up due to his incredible stature of 6'4'' 210 lbs in ninth grade, rather
than his hockey skills. Due to his poor academic performance and his behavior issues, in Boogaard's
mind, hockey became the only that he could take to become successful. The reading goes on to tell
about Boogaard being cut from many of his youth teams due to losing fights, because as Branch
acknowledges, "There is not much use for an enforcer who loses fights" (p. 5). Following a hard loss
to Mike Lee, Boogaard spent his summer with a wired–shut jaw, but managed to gain close to 30
pounds in that time. The weight gain allowed for Boogaard to be a more balanced fighter, along with

Personal Narrative: The Future Of Basketball
We're officially down to the final four in the 2016 NHL playoffs with the East and West Conference
Finals underway. Like every year, the playoffs have offered high–quality hockey with riveting
games throughout the postseason. There have been four seven–game series, all in the Western
Conference, that went back and forth, while shorter series have also had very competitive games.
Every night of postseason play has provided excellent theater, and those who haven't watched are

There have been numerous surprises in the postseason that have not only given us fresh blood in the

NHL free agency begins on July 1, and there are many sought–after free agents testing the waters.
Before teams get the go–ahead to make signings official, they've been active with clearing cap space
via trades and buyouts. Though the NHL is rarely predictable, some of those trades were downright
surprising. After keeping their defensive core intact during the expansion draft, the Minnesota Wild
moved Marco Scandella – a star defenseman – to the Buffalo Sabres, along with Jason Pominville.
In return, they picked up an undersized by skilled d–man in Tyler Ennis, and a gritty forward in

After signing Scott Darling to a four–year contract, the 'Canes exposed both Eddie Lack and Cam
Ward in the expansion draft. Vegas selected neither. Despite Ward being at the tail end of his career,
he has been the guy in Carolina for a long time. That left Lack the odd man out; instead of buying
out his contract, Carolina traded him to the Calgary Flames in return for Keegan Kanzig. (I know.
I've never heard of him either.) Although they retain part of Lack's contract for the next season, it's
less of a burden going forward, which is the entire purpose of the move. Between Darling and Ward,
nearly $7.5 million in cap money is used up on goalies alone. With Lack's entire contract, the Canes
would be spending an even more exorbitant amount on three goalies when only two can play. This
move makes a lot of sense, but it surely disrupted Lack's honeymoon when he got the news. At least
he did get the news; Artemi Panarin was evidently out in rural Russia somewhere when he was
traded from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Columbus Blue Jackets and couldn't be reached for
quite some time. Panarin and Tyler Motte were sent eastward in exchange for Brandon Saad and
Anton Forsberg, the latter of whom has already signed a contract extension with his new team. Saad,

Deviance in Hockey
Violence in ice hockey has been an identifying staple in the sport since "the first hockey leagues
formed in the mid–1880's," (Ice Hockey Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game). Since the
modern era of hockey, and the creation of the Stanley Cup, hockey has been viewed as one of the
most violent sports in western civilization. Clarence Campbell, former NHL President has even said
that "[w]ithout violence, there would be no such thing as hockey," (Coakley). To an extent hockey is
unmatched in illegal assaults by any other sport, in both amateur and professional leagues,
(Colburn). This does not mean that the contact in other sports is not as intense as hockey, for
example rugby and football are both very "violent" sports, but this ... Show more content on

This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport.
Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children.
Because of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just
the participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports
were and most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey,
however, did not conform to these new norms.
Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence
is statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and
society as a whole. This violence also violates the norms that society has created for competitive
sport. Because of these harms, the rarity of such violence in sports, and the violation of the norms, a
negative societal reaction forms.
One of the ways that an act can contract a deviant label is by its statistical rarity, (Bereska).

A Detroit Interstate Sign
In 2008 and the years after, the auto industry along with most other industries suffered greatly due to
the recession. This impacted Detroit, the Motor City, greatly. Thousands of people were out of work,
many companies leaving the area, and the overall moral of the city changed. The ad starts out with
shaky footage of an industrial city looking pretty gloomy. This illustrates how many view Detroit.
The narrator of the ad starts the monologue of by posing a question, "what does this city know about
luxury? Hm?". This statement use irony to make the audience think. An image of a Detroit Interstate
sign is presented. The narrator asks "What does a town that has been to hell and back know about
the finer things in life?". He answers his own question with "more than most.". Throughout this
monologue more images of Detroit are presented. Some examples are an American flag, abandon
build, and downtown area. Images like these help the audience visualize the variety of Detroit. After
the first part of monologue, a shoot of a car's rear view and side mirror are displayed. This builds
anticipation of what is to come. Then the front façade of what can be presumed as the same vehicle
is quickly displayed. After that, an iron sculpture of an arm is displayed, followed by a painting of
men work on engines. This image reinforces that Detroit is the Motor City. While those images are

Toronto Maple Leafs Contenders
The Toronto Maple Leafs cup contenders? Impossible, you might say, and that would have been the
case just a mere two seasons ago when they fell off the cliff and crash landed into the bottom of the
Eastern Conference, but the Maple Leafs are a different team now. They have rebuilt, oted, and

accumulated all of the things that take a team to the playoffs: improved defense, explosive offence,
and unbelievably talented goaltending. With the fresh vision of their head coach, Randy Carlyle, the
Toronto Maple Leafs have become a team with a shot at the playoffs this season. To begin with, one
of the most important reasons why the Leafs have become a contending team this season is because
of their outstanding improvement on the blue line. Putting the puck in the net has never been an

sponsorships, television contracts and selling merchandise. The National Basketball Association
recently signed a new TV agreement with TNT and ESPN to approximately make $2.6 billion per
season. Even with a total of 400 or so odd active players making an average of close to $5 million
annually, national TV contracts generate enough revenue to cover salaries and then some.
This graph depicts league revenue of the National Basketball Association from the 2001/02 season
to the 2014/15 season (Statistica, 2016). As seen the chart above clearly indicates the NBA makes a
profit and has been gradually increasing throughout the years, except for the season of 2011/12 but
that's because the season was shorted due to the lockout that had taken place.
The NBA has many different sponsors. Sponsorship spending On the NBA Totals $739 Million in
2014–2015 Season up 8.9 percent from the previous year, according to IEG research. A list of the
NBA sponsors are Anheuser Busch, Gatorade, Coca cola, Adidas, Miller Coors, Kia Spalding, Geico
and etc. Anheuser–Busch is the most active sponsor of the NBA. In time insurance overtook autos to
become the most active category sponsoring the NBA. Insurance companies are five times more
likely to sponsor professional basketball than the average of all sponsors, according to the research.
Auto and beer are the second and third most active categories.

per team. In the 1880's the first organization of the first amateur hockey league was created. Over
the next several years, ice hockey's popularity spread over all of Canada. It was around 1893 that ice

Hockey Team Research Paper

  • 1. Hockey Team Research Paper Although there are many NHL teams, I think the Kings are the best. If you're wondering what the NHL is, your in the right place. The NHL is the national hockey league. The NHL is composed of two conferences East and West. The Kings are in the Western conference. The Kings are the best team in the NHL because they have great offense, they have great defense and they are the best team to watch. The King's offense is one of their keys to success. On April 18, 2016 the Kings beat the San Jose Sharks. Tanner Pearson got the game winning goal from an assist from Dustin Brown and Vincent Lecavalier. Cbs Sports said, under pressure Brown was focused on assisting goal that drew the score. On offense the Kings are not afraid to check their opponents. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The team currently resides just a luxury sedan or limo ride away at Joe Louis Arena, located in downtown Detroit. Here are some team historical highlights: 1920s – The Red Wings go all the way back to the old Western Hockey League, when the Victoria (British Columbia) Cougars were sold to a group from Detroit on September 25, 1926. The team played its home games in Windsor, Ontario. The Victoria Cougars had won the Stanley Cup in 1925 and were Cup finalists in 1926, but the Detroit Cougars finished 12–28–4; the NHL's worst record for the 1926–27 season. • 5. Essay About Hockey Why One Hockey Player Can Make A World Of Difference By: Jami Ness As a Canadian, hockey is something very important to me and my family. Especially the Calgary Flames. When I was younger, the Calgary Flames never made the Stanley Cup Playoffs, that was something very frustrating for all Flames fans. This all changed when Sean Monahan was drafted in 2013 and turned the franchise around. Sean was a resilient child that showed throughout his hockey career. Sean made the Calgary Flames a true playoff contender by bringing more offensive power to them than they've ever seen. This truly changed the Calgary Flames and how the city of Calgary and fans from all around view hockey and many kids are inspired to be as good as Sean. Sean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By this point he was a well known centreman. He started off his first season with a bang by obtaining 6 goals in the first 9 games. He has made the playoffs twice out of four seasons with the Flames. In his second playoff run, he got 4 goals second to Sidney Crosby's winger, Jake Guentzel. He also got his 100th goal this year, being the youngest flame to achieve it and the 6th youngest NHLer right under very acclaimed players like Kane and Stamkos. He was recognized as a upcoming tremendous hockey player and was invited to play in the 2011 17U hockey challenge and was a key role in Team Toronto winning. By this point in time, Sean was well known across the National Hockey League as a centreman who knew how to score, set up plays, and run a great powerplay line effortlessly. Even though Monahan has been in the NHL for 4 years he continues to have the same power and speed he originally came with. The fan–base for the Flames has grown tremendously; especially with kids since Sean was drafted. Everytime I go to Calgary for a hockey game, I see more Monahan jerseys than anyone else because he is what every kid wants to become, a fast hockey player who scores; lots. The game has changed since 2013, and it's all because of Sean Monahan. Although there are many players who score as often, if not more often than Sean, what sets him apart is his drive, intelligence, speed and agility. Sean monahan has changed the game for all fans, players who play with and players ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The American Influence On Canada For many decades, writers and authors have accused the American influence on Canada as one of the reasons why Canada is losing its heritage, with one major aspect being the game of hockey. The institutionalization of American Culture began to take root in Canada during the late 1920's and 1930s as technological advances, specifically the invention of the radio, allowed Canadians to enjoy American entertainment. American stations were much more reliable than Canadian ones, causing American sporting stations such as NBC and CBS to become extremely popular in Canada (Gruneau et al, 1993). As Canada was becoming intertwined with the United States (U.S.), it was becoming less of a satellite of Britain, which made it tremendously difficult for Canada's elite to protect British ideals such as self–improvement and participating in sport for the game's sake. (Gruneau et al, 1993). In the early 1940's, after the great depression forced many franchises to dismantle, the National Hockey League (NHL) was left with six teams, which made up the famous "original six." At this time, America had a strong influence on the game, as four of the original six teams were based in the United States, and all of the players in league were paid in American dollars (Gruneau et al, 1993). By the early 1960's, televised sports were emerging in North America, and NHL players were becoming mainstream stars. Inspired by this, along with the threat of the NHL losing its television contract to the Western ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. History Of The NHL Hockey, a one–hundred, and forty–two–year–old sport, that has captured the attention of many for as long as it has existed. Despite the age of the sport, the National Hockey League (or NHL) has only been in the United States for ninety–three years. The NHL had set a basis for the game and also supported the rise of many teams and secured a forever spot in sports history. The first American team to be incorporated into the national league, the Boston Bruins, have been one of the longest standing teams in US history. Even though the game existed in the country before the NHL came around, the organization brought life to one of the most famous teams of the twenty–first century. The team "came into being on Nov. 1, 1924, when Charles Francis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this game the Boston played against one of Montreal's teams; the Maroons. Not many people attended the game due to the lack of intrigue the 1920's held for it. When the game was set to start only a handful of people took to the stands. Boston being only a month old, and the only American representative team, the game brought intrigue. "The Bruins trailed 1–0 after the first period, they rallied back in the second frame, scoring two goals en route to defeating their fellow expansionists 2–1" ("Boston Bruins Host NHL's First Game In U.S"). The score of the game seemed to be a strong start for the newborn team, however, it was just the beginning of their downfall. After their first, the Bruins lost every game in the season until the next year. With the help of this game, as well as the encouragement of hockey fans, more teams were born. During 1924 there were four well–known teams in the seven–year–old NHL. "The original teams included the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Arenas" as well as the Quebec Bulldogs ("Hockey Basics" 9). Although these early groups were popular in the twenty's only the name of the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators have lived to see the light of day in the two–thousands. December 28, 1995 Marketing The National Hockey League In early August 1995 Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the NHL, Stephen Solomon, COO of the NHL, and Rick Dudley, COO of NHL Enterprises,1 met in their New York office to chart a strategy for marketing the NHL in 1995 and beyond. After a spectacular 1993–94 season, the NHL's 1994– 95 season had been somewhat mixed; the league had suffered a labor dispute and played an abbreviated season. As one NHL team general manager remarked, "You have 10 big men moving at 30 mph, chasing a 3 inch diameter puck, and shooting it at 100 mph, so sometimes you lose sight of the puck if you're new to the game. But if you are a fan, what a thrill it can be." The 26 teams in the league are organized into an Eastern and Western Conference. Within each of the conferences are two divisions: the Atlantic and the Northeast in the Eastern Conference, and the Central and the Pacific in the Western Conference. The teams play an 82–game regular season from October to April, followed by four rounds of playoffs where teams play a bestof–seven game series to advance to the next round. The eight teams in each conference with the best regular season records (including division leaders) play three rounds to determine the conference winner. Finally, the two conference champions compete for the Stanley Cup, the trophy awarded for over a century to North America 's best hockey team. A large portion of this is due to the fact that the world of hockey is constantly changing in many aspects. The way it is played, the way we watch, the way it is coached, and the way players are scouted and traded. Almost everything on the operations, media, player, and fan experience side have gone through changes and alterations because of technology. Technology has opened up a plethora of doors within the sport and has had such a big impact on not just revenues but other areas as well. One of the largest affects come on the fan experience and involvement side. Changes outside of actual gameplay such as this one are often driven by revenue but are ultimately acted on by the current technology in today's digital society. In order to find out the extent of these changes, three questions must be answered. How has the viewing experience and accessibility changed for fans, how has the media and technology affected fan engagement, and has today's digital society taken away from any of hockey's tradition. Case Analysis Case brief and overview: Sher–Wood (formerly Sherwood–Drolet) has been a well–known Canadian hockey equipment manufacturer since 1949 (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23), predominantly specialising in wooden sticks for players from the National Hockey League down to players at the junior level. Sher–Wood also produces composite sticks, albeit at a much lower volume. Whilst hockey stick production has traditionally been based in North America, over the last decade there has been a significant shift towards global sourcing in the industry (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.21). This has been driven by a desire to access low–cost factors of production, secure cheaper material resources, and ultimately gain a competitive advantage. Sher–Wood's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In comparison, Sher–Wood offers specific products for a niche market. Despite this, Sher–Wood offers 27 models of player and goalie sticks – a considerably large amount for a company with a global market share of approximately 2% (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20). Secondly, composite sticks have been the dominant stick used among NHL players over the past decade (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.18), and as such have grown rapidly in popularity amongst children and amateur players (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p.19). Despite the fact that Sher–Wood anticipates the composite stick business to grow in volume and profitability, there is a sufficient imbalance between market demand and Sher–Wood's product output, since wooden sticks still account for approximately half of their hockey stick models. (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 24) Further to this, Sher–Wood's brand image and reputation are diminishing. This was affected by the loss of NHL star Jason Spezza to rival Reebok in 2008 in objection to the company's outsourcing to China (Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 23). Currently only 2.3% of NHL players use Sherwood sticks (Exhibit 1, Zhang & Beamish, 2011, p. 20). This is a concern for Sher–Wood, especially since "hockey sticks endorsed by professional hockey players enjoyed a strong position in the hocket stick market." The NFL and NCAA have enacted several rule changes in order to minimize the occurrence of concussions. These new rules, like many before them, have come under the scrutiny of the very athletes that they were meant to protect. The NHL and NHL Players Association in 1997 together created a program in order to get a better understanding of concussions and how to prevent them (Burke et al, 2011). • 52. Outliers : The Story Of Success We are presented with a theory that there aren't any successful self–made people, which we know is contrary to popular beliefs. This theory was presented by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, Outliers: The Story of Success. The theory is further defined by the premise that holds that success is enabled by a person's culture, environment, when and where they were born, and a strong work ethic. These theories and examples of success are analyzed using the textbook, Leadership: Research Findings, Practice, and Skills (2015) by Andrew DuBrin. Several examples are provided in this paper that illustrate and support Gladwell's thoughts on opportunity and cultural legacy. An Analysis of Outliers: The Story of Success Outliers is Malcolm Gladwell 's examination of what makes some people excessively more successful than others. These "outliers," as he calls them, are commonly thought to possess talent and intelligence far above that of the average person, but he challenges this popular belief by looking at the background of some notable outliers. Further, he argues that people are more a product of their environment, culture, life experiences and even when a person was born. Andrew DuBrin textbook provides theories and concepts of leadership that can be correlated to the actions of the good people mentioned in Gladwell's book. It would make sense to say that the success of individuals would come from something more than what is within the individual. Discussion Malcolm Gladwell (2008) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Training camps around the league will all be opening for business, with the first on–ice sessions slated to begin Friday morning. For the New York Islanders, it seems every year lately has been 'make or break', for a variety of reasons. This year, however, the term might never be more accurate as the team looks to re–sign their franchise captain, finally bring some closure to a long, drawn out arena drama and return to the playoffs. The results of those three factors, each under their own cloud of uncertainty, could also decide the future fate of long tenured general manager, Garth Snow, who seems to ... You still have Nikolay Kulemin and Stephen Gionta and have to deal with Quine and Prince down the road. As of today, only Casey Bailey, a 6–3, 26–year old wing who spent last year in the Ottawa organization, is coming in on a PTO, presumably for depth on the Sound Tigers roster. Defense What Snow did for Hamonic was admirable, and showed loyalty, first and foremost, to the person rather than the player. But it does leave the Islanders defense, one that wasn't all that good last year, with more questions than answers. Johnny Boychuk, coming off a rebound season, and Nick Leddy, the only true transitional threat, are back and that's an excellent start. It's after that it begins to get hazy. • 60. Praise Of Bill Peters, Coach Of The Carolina Hurricanes In Praise of Bill Peters Now firmly into his third season as a head coach in the NHL, Bill Peters, coach of the Carolina Hurricanes, has a lot of work in front of him to get this team into post–season contention. Through his first two years with the organization, Peters is still yet to participate in the playoffs. In fact, it has been seven years since Carolina last saw the playoffs. Peters ' current lack of post–season success shouldn 't be an immediate point for concern, as he came into the team during a major recession in terms of team talent. Most notably offensive stars Alexander Semin and Eric Staal both had major drops in terms of point production during Peters' first two seasons, both see their way out of Carolina. It appears though for this season the pieces are beginning to fall into place for Peters' vision of this team. Their level of play over the past few games has been as high as it has ever been in recent years, as the team as a whole is able to play effectively in all ends. This quick turnover time shouldn 't come as a shock to anyone given Bill Peters outstanding performances behind the bench for other teams. Spokane Chiefs Bill Peters' first major coaching job came in Major Junior as an assistant coach for the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. The Three Hills native would serve there as an assistant under then head coach, and current Toronto head coach Mike Babcock from 1996–2000, helping Spokane reach a 100 point season and playoff final appearance in Babcock ... Derek Boogaard: A Boy Learns To Brawl Analysis John Branch, in his work, "Derek Boogaard: A Boy Learns to Brawl", examines the life of Derek Boogaard to inform readers about the difficulties associated with the lives of NHL professional enforcers. Branch highlight the difficult road for NHL enforcers, the physical toll on enforcer's bodies, and the hidden damages an enforcer deals even after a career. The reading by Branch on Boogaard begins with an introduction of a quick story on Boogaards first fight then takes a turn to how his life was cut short in the prime of his career. The story continues with a life story about the rocky road to success Boogaard faced. Boogaard grew up playing on various competitive teams in Canada, but was only picked up due to his incredible stature of 6'4'' 210 lbs in ninth grade, rather than his hockey skills. Due to his poor academic performance and his behavior issues, in Boogaard's mind, hockey became the only that he could take to become successful. The reading goes on to tell about Boogaard being cut from many of his youth teams due to losing fights, because as Branch acknowledges, "There is not much use for an enforcer who loses fights" (p. 5). Following a hard loss to Mike Lee, Boogaard spent his summer with a wired–shut jaw, but managed to gain close to 30 pounds in that time. The weight gain allowed for Boogaard to be a more balanced fighter, along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With any sport, head trauma can easily occur, especially hockey enforcers. • 64. Personal Narrative: The Future Of Basketball We're officially down to the final four in the 2016 NHL playoffs with the East and West Conference Finals underway. Like every year, the playoffs have offered high–quality hockey with riveting games throughout the postseason. There have been four seven–game series, all in the Western Conference, that went back and forth, while shorter series have also had very competitive games. Every night of postseason play has provided excellent theater, and those who haven't watched are missing out. There have been numerous surprises in the postseason that have not only given us fresh blood in the final four, but sparked intrigue about how the future of the league will progress as teams could look to mimic the remaining team's success. In the conference finals, you won't find the Chicago Blackhawks, which won three Stanley Cups in the last six years, nor the Los Angeles Kings, which won two Cups in the last four years. Both teams were bounced in the first round this year by teams that are still alive for the prize. Not even the New York Rangers or Washington Capitals, which have both reached the postseason in eight of the last nine seasons, advanced to the conference finals this season. The remaining teams are the San Jose Sharks, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning and Pittsburgh Penguins. Each of the four remaining teams bring a fresh style to the game, but at ... Before teams get the go–ahead to make signings official, they've been active with clearing cap space via trades and buyouts. Though the NHL is rarely predictable, some of those trades were downright surprising. After keeping their defensive core intact during the expansion draft, the Minnesota Wild moved Marco Scandella – a star defenseman – to the Buffalo Sabres, along with Jason Pominville. In return, they picked up an undersized by skilled d–man in Tyler Ennis, and a gritty forward in Marcus Foligno. After signing Scott Darling to a four–year contract, the 'Canes exposed both Eddie Lack and Cam Ward in the expansion draft. Vegas selected neither. Despite Ward being at the tail end of his career, he has been the guy in Carolina for a long time. That left Lack the odd man out; instead of buying out his contract, Carolina traded him to the Calgary Flames in return for Keegan Kanzig. (I know. I've never heard of him either.) Although they retain part of Lack's contract for the next season, it's less of a burden going forward, which is the entire purpose of the move. Between Darling and Ward, nearly $7.5 million in cap money is used up on goalies alone. With Lack's entire contract, the Canes would be spending an even more exorbitant amount on three goalies when only two can play. This move makes a lot of sense, but it surely disrupted Lack's honeymoon when he got the news. At least he did get the news; Artemi Panarin was evidently out in rural Russia somewhere when he was traded from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Columbus Blue Jackets and couldn't be reached for quite some time. Panarin and Tyler Motte were sent eastward in exchange for Brandon Saad and Anton Forsberg, the latter of whom has already signed a contract extension with his new team. Saad, of course, was a Blackhawk before, and was part of their 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup victories, before being dealt to Columbus as a casualty of Jonathan Toews' and Patrick Kane's ridiculous contracts. • 68. Deviance in Hockey Violence in ice hockey has been an identifying staple in the sport since "the first hockey leagues formed in the mid–1880's," (Ice Hockey Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game). Since the modern era of hockey, and the creation of the Stanley Cup, hockey has been viewed as one of the most violent sports in western civilization. Clarence Campbell, former NHL President has even said that "[w]ithout violence, there would be no such thing as hockey," (Coakley). To an extent hockey is unmatched in illegal assaults by any other sport, in both amateur and professional leagues, (Colburn). This does not mean that the contact in other sports is not as intense as hockey, for example rugby and football are both very "violent" sports, but this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport. Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children. Because of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just the participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports were and most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey, however, did not conform to these new norms. Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence is statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and society as a whole. This violence also violates the norms that society has created for competitive sport. Because of these harms, the rarity of such violence in sports, and the violation of the norms, a negative societal reaction forms. One of the ways that an act can contract a deviant label is by its statistical rarity, (Bereska). Violence, such as the fistfights seen in hockey, is a statistical rarity. This impacted Detroit, the Motor City, greatly. Thousands of people were out of work, many companies leaving the area, and the overall moral of the city changed. The ad starts out with shaky footage of an industrial city looking pretty gloomy. This illustrates how many view Detroit. The narrator of the ad starts the monologue of by posing a question, "what does this city know about luxury? Hm?". This statement use irony to make the audience think. An image of a Detroit Interstate sign is presented. The narrator asks "What does a town that has been to hell and back know about the finer things in life?". He answers his own question with "more than most.". Throughout this monologue more images of Detroit are presented. Some examples are an American flag, abandon build, and downtown area. Images like these help the audience visualize the variety of Detroit. After the first part of monologue, a shoot of a car's rear view and side mirror are displayed. This builds anticipation of what is to come. Then the front façade of what can be presumed as the same vehicle is quickly displayed. Impossible, you might say, and that would have been the case just a mere two seasons ago when they fell off the cliff and crash landed into the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but the Maple Leafs are a different team now. They have rebuilt, oted, and redeemed themselves in a city where winning has become a dot on the horizon. They have accumulated all of the things that take a team to the playoffs: improved defense, explosive offence, and unbelievably talented goaltending. With the fresh vision of their head coach, Randy Carlyle, the Toronto Maple Leafs have become a team with a shot at the playoffs this season. To begin with, one of the most important reasons why the Leafs have become a contending team this season is because of their outstanding improvement on the blue line. Putting the puck in the net has never been an issue nor a worrisome topic in the city of Toronto. Fans hear the buzzer go off at the ACC regularly and it has been something we have taken pride in. The National Basketball Association recently signed a new TV agreement with TNT and ESPN to approximately make $2.6 billion per season. Even with a total of 400 or so odd active players making an average of close to $5 million annually, national TV contracts generate enough revenue to cover salaries and then some. This graph depicts league revenue of the National Basketball Association from the 2001/02 season to the 2014/15 season (Statistica, 2016). As seen the chart above clearly indicates the NBA makes a profit and has been gradually increasing throughout the years, except for the season of 2011/12 but that's because the season was shorted due to the lockout that had taken place.
