the Calgary Flames. When I was younger, the Calgary Flames never made the Stanley Cup Playoffs,
that was something very frustrating for all Flames fans. This all changed when Sean Monahan was

For many decades, writers and authors have accused the American influence on Canada as one of
the reasons why Canada is losing its heritage, with one major aspect being the game of hockey. The
institutionalization of American Culture began to take root in Canada during the late 1920's and
1930s as technological advances, specifically the invention of the radio, allowed Canadians to enjoy
American entertainment. American stations were much more reliable than Canadian ones, causing
American sporting stations such as NBC and CBS to become extremely popular in Canada (Gruneau
et al, 1993). As Canada was becoming intertwined with the United States (U.S.), it was becoming
less of a satellite of Britain, which made it tremendously difficult for Canada's elite to protect British

1993). In the early 1940's, after the great depression forced many franchises to dismantle, the
National Hockey League (NHL) was left with six teams, which made up the famous "original six."
At this time, America had a strong influence on the game, as four of the original six teams were

A recent study of college football players has shown that those who participate in high contact sports
and have had a concussion before have a 300% higher chance of having another one in comparison
to athletes that have never had a concussion before (Jolicoeur et al, 2007). The NFL and NCAA
have enacted several rule changes in order to minimize the occurrence of concussions. These new
rules, like many before them, have come under the scrutiny of the very athletes that they were meant
to protect. The NHL and NHL Players Association in 1997 together created a program in order to
get a better understanding of concussions and how to prevent them (Burke et al, 2011). According to
Covassin (2008), athletes who have had more than one concussion take a longer time to recover
with each concussion that they suffer from.
NHL players suffer concussions at a very high rate. In 1997, the number of concussions among NHL
players suffered during games was reported at 559. This does not include incidences where the
player didn't inform the team physician of symptoms that he was having, which would have made
this number a lot higher. Players actually lost consciousness in 18% of these cases. Fortunately,

contrary to popular beliefs. This theory was presented by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, Outliers:
The Story of Success. The theory is further defined by the premise that holds that success is enabled
by a person's culture, environment, when and where they were born, and a strong work ethic. These
theories and examples of success are analyzed using the textbook, Leadership: Research Findings,
Practice, and Skills (2015) by Andrew DuBrin. Several examples are provided in this paper that
illustrate and support Gladwell's thoughts on opportunity and cultural legacy.
An Analysis of Outliers: The Story of Success
Outliers is Malcolm Gladwell 's examination of what makes some people excessively more
successful than others. These "outliers," as he calls them, are commonly thought to possess talent
and intelligence far above that of the average person, but he challenges this popular belief by
looking at the background of some notable outliers.
Further, he argues that people are more a product of their environment, culture, life experiences and

In Praise of Bill Peters
Now firmly into his third season as a head coach in the NHL, Bill Peters, coach of the Carolina
Hurricanes, has a lot of work in front of him to get this team into post–season contention. Through
his first two years with the organization, Peters is still yet to participate in the playoffs. In fact, it has
been seven years since Carolina last saw the playoffs.
Peters ' current lack of post–season success shouldn 't be an immediate point for concern, as he came
into the team during a major recession in terms of team talent. Most notably offensive stars
Alexander Semin and Eric Staal both had major drops in terms of point production during Peters'
first two seasons, both see their way out of Carolina.
It appears though for this season the pieces are beginning to fall into place for Peters' vision of this
team. Their level of play over the past few games has been as high as it has ever been in recent
years, as the team as a whole is able to play effectively in all ends.
This quick turnover time shouldn 't come as a shock to anyone given Bill Peters outstanding
performances behind the bench for other teams.

Finals underway. Like every year, the playoffs have offered high–quality hockey with riveting
games throughout the postseason. There have been four seven–game series, all in the Western
Conference, that went back and forth, while shorter series have also had very competitive games.
Every night of postseason play has provided excellent theater, and those who haven't watched are
missing out.
There have been numerous surprises in the postseason that have not only given us fresh blood in the
final four, but sparked intrigue about how the future of the league will progress as teams could look
to mimic the remaining team's success. In the conference finals, you won't find the Chicago
Blackhawks, which won three Stanley Cups in the last six years, nor the Los Angeles Kings, which
won two Cups in the last four years. Both teams were bounced in the first round this year by teams
that are still alive for the prize. Not even the New York Rangers or Washington Capitals, which have
both reached the postseason in eight of the last nine seasons, advanced to the conference finals this

After signing Scott Darling to a four–year contract, the 'Canes exposed both Eddie Lack and Cam
Ward in the expansion draft. Vegas selected neither. Despite Ward being at the tail end of his career,
he has been the guy in Carolina for a long time. That left Lack the odd man out; instead of buying
out his contract, Carolina traded him to the Calgary Flames in return for Keegan Kanzig. (I know.
I've never heard of him either.) Although they retain part of Lack's contract for the next season, it's

This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport.
Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children.
Because of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just
the participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports
were and most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey,
however, did not conform to these new norms.
Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence
is statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and
society as a whole. This violence also violates the norms that society has created for competitive
sport. Because of these harms, the rarity of such violence in sports, and the violation of the norms, a
negative societal reaction forms.

A Detroit Interstate Sign
In 2008 and the years after, the auto industry along with most other industries suffered greatly due to
the recession. This impacted Detroit, the Motor City, greatly. Thousands of people were out of work,
many companies leaving the area, and the overall moral of the city changed. The ad starts out with
shaky footage of an industrial city looking pretty gloomy. This illustrates how many view Detroit.
The narrator of the ad starts the monologue of by posing a question, "what does this city know about
luxury? Hm?". This statement use irony to make the audience think. An image of a Detroit Interstate
sign is presented. The narrator asks "What does a town that has been to hell and back know about
the finer things in life?". He answers his own question with "more than most.". Throughout this
monologue more images of Detroit are presented. Some examples are an American flag, abandon
build, and downtown area. Images like these help the audience visualize the variety of Detroit. After
the first part of monologue, a shoot of a car's rear view and side mirror are displayed. This builds
anticipation of what is to come. Then the front façade of what can be presumed as the same vehicle
is quickly displayed. After that, an iron sculpture of an arm is displayed, followed by a painting of
men work on engines. This image reinforces that Detroit is the Motor City. While those images are

recently signed a new TV agreement with TNT and ESPN to approximately make $2.6 billion per
season. Even with a total of 400 or so odd active players making an average of close to $5 million
annually, national TV contracts generate enough revenue to cover salaries and then some.
This graph depicts league revenue of the National Basketball Association from the 2001/02 season
to the 2014/15 season (Statistica, 2016). As seen the chart above clearly indicates the NBA makes a
profit and has been gradually increasing throughout the years, except for the season of 2011/12 but
that's because the season was shorted due to the lockout that had taken place.
The NBA has many different sponsors. Sponsorship spending On the NBA Totals $739 Million in
2014–2015 Season up 8.9 percent from the previous year, according to IEG research. A list of the
NBA sponsors are Anheuser Busch, Gatorade, Coca cola, Adidas, Miller Coors, Kia Spalding, Geico
and etc. Anheuser–Busch is the most active sponsor of the NBA. In time insurance overtook autos to
become the most active category sponsoring the NBA. Insurance companies are five times more
likely to sponsor professional basketball than the average of all sponsors, according to the research.
