1. How did you attract/address your
audience?
Media Evaluation Part 5
2. Colour-
The first thing I thought about when trying to attract my
target reader, was my colour scheme, as this was the
main aspect of magazine which would get recognised
and it would determine whether or not my magazine
would sell.
Choosing my colour scheme was quite difficult but I
knew I wanted my colours to be bright, and quite
feminine as my target audience was to teenage girls. I
chose to use a bright yellow and bright pink so that they
stood out to my audience which is females. I then used
black as a monotone colour so then my magazine didn't
look too bright.
On my contents page, I put the word “Hot” in a bright red,
so it emphasised the fact that the gossip is hot as the
colour red represents a hot temperature. Also, on my
contents page using the yellow and pink really contrast
well against the white background, so my contents page
looks exciting, unlike your usual contents page. On my
double page, I decided once again to use a neutral
background which would help the bright pink and yellow
stand out to the reader. Even, the black stands out well
against the grey background. Some people may say that
my double page spread isn't as bright and eye catching
as my other pages, but this is because I felt that by the
reader the reader will be interested enough to still read
the interview.
3. The Model-
The model is very important aspect of my magazine, and
I wanted to make sure that my readers could relate to my
model.
I have used my friend Emily to be my model as she is
very naturally pretty and suited the role I was looking for
in my artist. My use of a pretty model will make my
audience which is teenage girls want to aspire to look
like my model, I hope that they use her as a role model in
the future. Therefore, this will attract the reader into
buying my magazine.
My model is posing in a variety of positions which will
intrigue my audience and she is simply not just standing
there, like some artists do in pop magazines.
On my front cover, my model uses direct mode of
address, this is a very important convention which I
wanted to include in my magazine as it is essential in
drawing in you target reader. Using direst mode of
address makes the audience feel more involved and
connected to the magazine, by making it feel more
personal.
4. Masthead/Title-
The masthead for not only my front cover but my
contents and double page spread is a massive factor
in attracting my target audience.
The masthead is the first thing that your audience
will see, mainly because they are in bigger and
bolder writing.
On my front cover, I used the bright pink which is a
very bold colour and chose my font size bigger than
all the other font in my front cover. The use of the
question mark in my masthead emphasis that my
magazine has nothing but “forever pop!” in it. This
will also stand out to readers.
On my contents, I have used the bright yellow and
the pink to make it stand out . Once again, I have
used an exclamation mark to emphasis what is
inside my magazine. Instead of me saying “Contents
Page”, I used my masthead from my front cover to
reiterate the title of my magazine, so the audience
know what to expect in my magazine.
On my double page spread, my masthead, again is in
bright colours to contrast against the dull grey
background. Also, my masthead on my double page
spread is also a pull quote in which it gives reader
an incite into the article and it informs them on the
interview about the artist.
5. Bursts-
I have included bursts in my magazine, to attract my
target audience as the shape of them instantly attracts
anyone walking buy them in a shop.
Having my bursts in the bright yellow colour makes them
stand out against there dull backgrounds.
Having the yellow burst (bottom picture) on my front
cover is important in attracting my audience as its sharp
shape makes it very present on the page therefore
catching a possible readers eye. The black on the yellow
with the pink outline makes it very eye catching, and here
I used all 3 colours in my colour scheme on purpose to
stand out to the reader.
The other burst I have used is on my double page spread,
and I used it on the photo page which is very grey toned,
so the bright yellow juxtaposes against the grey making it
the first aspect of the page the reader will see.
6. Sell Lines and Callouts-
Callouts and puffs are very important in attracting the
audience as it gives the reader a sneak peek into what
is included in my magazine.
The callout, “has Rihanna really gone red?!”, would
attract the audience as it is in very bright colours and
has a question mark so the audience will see it as a
rhetorical question. Therefore they will want to buy the
magazine to find out more about Rihanna going red.
The Sell line “Our top 10 tips on how to keep your
makeup last all day!” would attract my target audience
as it indicates that my reader who typically is a teenage
girl would benefit massively from receiving these tips.
Also, it says “inside”, meaning that in order to get the
tips you need to buy the magazine, this will appeal
massively to my audience.
7. Use of well Known Artists-
I have various Images of artists, in my magazine that the
reader would be familiar with. Firstly, I have included many
pictures of boys especially on my front cover, because
having hot male celebrities in my magazine will be seen as
sex appeal to my audience which is teenage girls. Also,
having other women celebrities in my magazine, may help
my potential readers to aspire to be like them or to use
them as a successful model.
