‘I think I might die if I made it’ 'There were no singles'
AS Media Q2
1. How does your media product
represent social groups?
When creating my music magazine I had a particular group
of people in mind.
I made sure that my product used appealing colours,
language and artists in order to appeal to this group.
I also had to consider what race, gender, age, social class
and ethnicity my audience are.
2. • Whilst creating my music magazine I had to consider how I was
going to present my target audience (Teenage girls between 13-
17).
• During my research I found that this audience are interested in
romance/boys, making new friends, shopping and using the
internet. It was important for me to portray these likes within my
magazine.
• I used this research in order to think about which colours,
images/mise-en-scene and the language that would be included in
the magazine in order to represent this social group.
3. • The genre of my magazine is pop.
• In order to represent teenage girls between 13-17 I presented
them as carefree, loving and maybe a little predictable and typical.
• I showed them as enjoying only pop music and made this clear
through my use of colours and the mise en scene of my artists.
4. • The clothing that my artists wear within the magazine is quite
relaxed, accessible and would be considered as high street fashion
meaning that readers are not constricted in buying these items of
clothing.
• By getting my artists to wear this type of clothing I am
representing my audience as quite normal girls. Although my
audience would be interested in fashion, some of my audience
would rather buy clothing that is comfortable rather than overly
fashionable.
5. • The colours used throughout my magazine are very bright
highlighting the genre pop. It suggests that my audience is happy
and carefree. I found this important for me to include within my
magazine as it moves away from the typical stereotype that
teenagers face off being moody, lazy, rude etc. By using these
colours these stereotypes could be broken and reflects the true
stereotypes of some teenage girls.
• Throughout my magazine I have used different ethnicities to show
my audience as being multi-cultural/diverse. I have also used boys
and girls in my magazine in order to reach out to the minority of
boys that may be attracted to the magazine.
