1. Male or Female?
Male Female
Of the 12 we asked, 7 were female and 5 were
male. Although our documentary is about the
topic of men facing pressure from media to look
a certain way, we want the documentary to
appeal to women too. When deciding on a
channel for our documentary to be on, we will
consider the ratio of men to women who watch
it, looking for an equal split or a slightly higher
male percentage.
2. Would you rather the documentary had a clear
conclusion, left you asking questions or a mix?
Clear Conclusion More Questions Mix of Both
This question was to determine whether we
wanted an open or closed documentary.
We need to focus on facts and stats for an
ending which will have a clear conclusion.
We can’t however leave no questions
unanswered, as a documentary about
human’s personal experiences will always
have loose ends, open to interpretation
and personal choice.
The preference for a clear conclusion
reminds us to focus on a certain question
to answer throughout.
3. Age Range
12 to 16 17 to 19 20-25 26+
For our primary research we made sure we
asked teenagers exclusively. Only one was
aged 12-16, with the other 11 in the 17-19
range. There would be no point asking older
people for our primary research, but for or
secondary research we will. The documentary
wont be watched exclusively by teenagers, so
while their opinions will impact our choices
the most, we don’t want to alienate any older
(or younger) audiences who might tune in.
4. Would you rather there was a presenter or a
voice over?
Presenter Voice Over
9 people preferred the idea of a presenter
to 3 who preferred voice over. The
preference for an active presenter suggests
that a participatory documentary would
appeal to our target audience.
With this in mind, Chanel and I decided to
both present the documentary. Having 2
presenters will mean our segments in the
documentary are varied and will maintain
interest.
For a more casual topic like ours, and
bearing in mind our target audience, we will
dress up but not overly- formally.
5. How often do you watch documentaries?
Weekly Bimonthly Monthly Once a Year Never
6 people say they watch documentaries
bimonthly, and 4 say they watch them
monthly. This is positive as it shows
documentaries already have an audience
in teenagers.
Nobody we asked said they never watch
documentaries, which again shows
documentaries are popular with
teenagers. With this in mind we will
research which channels show
documentaries aimed at a younger
demographic.
6. How long would your ideal documentary last?
1hr 1:30 hr 2 hr 2:30 hr
9 people said their ideal documentary would last
for an hour, and 3 said 1:30 hr. This suggests that
rapid pace documentaries with smaller segments
would be better over longer segments. A multi-
strand documentary could help keep the
attention of our audience. We can do this by
Chanel and I presenting different segments of
the documentary in different places, about
different variations on the topic.
When doing our documentary proposal we will
ensure we write how long our documentary will
be.
7. Which of these are most important in a documentary?
Cinematography Experts Footage Vox Pops The Topic
The majority said the topic was
the main source of interest in
the documentary meaning we
will have to have a script which
pulls their interest.
8. Would you be interested in watching a
documentary aimed specifically at teenagers?
Yes No Maybe
9. Do you think men are pressured by the media to look
a certain way?
Yes No Maybe
10. Do you think men face more, less or the same amount
of pressure to look a certain way as women do?
More Pressure Less Pressure Same Pressure as Women
