1. What is Gatekeeping?
Gatekeeping is the process through which information is filtered so it
remains objective and is not bias. This is essential as its important to not
offend the viewers and therefore best for the narrative voice/ presenter to
stay objective.
2. What is Mediation?
Mediation is when the real is changed in some way. For example if some
archival footage is edited, the real has now been changed to create a
certain look or influence the viewer in a certain way. Often
documentarians of film makers will mediate footage to change it so it
appears a certain way that appeals or cooperates with the points they are
making.
3. How we will consider these in our
documentary:
In order to refrain from meditating our footage too much we have to be
aware of certain music and sound effects used on certain clips. For example,
as a student myself I can sympathies with students who find it hard to get a
job or hard to balance a job and education with social life too. Therefore, for
example, when creating the documentary I must refrain from using
sympathetic music when a student is giving their opinion. I must also
remember to keep the view points open so its not mediated from just one
view point so it wont influence the viewers in a certain way.
With regards to Gatekeeping, all three of us as gatekeepers must stay on
track with that the purpose of our documentary is to investigate and
therefore we must remain neutral with our opinions. In order to make sure
this happens we must phrase our questions in a none bias way that allows us
to stay objective.
