The document reports on audience research conducted by a group for a school project. It discusses the demographics of the research participants, including that 72% were female due to attending an all-girls school. It also examines the film viewing preferences and habits of different age groups. Finally, it analyzes the research findings to identify effective techniques for building suspense in a thriller film opening that will appeal to teenagers.
2. Are you Male or Female?
Attending an all girls
school resulted in us
asking only girls that fit into
the category of children.
Therefore making the total
number of females that we
asked larger.
72% of the people we
asked were female.
3. Which of the following films have you seen?
From our research we can clearly see
the most popular films among a certain
age group. Which helps us to find out
what type of sub-genre they are most
attracted to:
• Children- Lucy (action)
• Teenagers- Black Swan
(psychological)
• Adults – Mr & Mrs.Smith (romantic)
4. Which platform do you commonly use to view
films?
The older generation were not
accustomed to the internet as it has only
started to be used commonly in homes
in recent years. They gravitate towards
cinemas more as it is what they have
grown up with and taught to love and
appreciate with movies as a whole (used
to the experience).
5. Which do you believe is the most effective in
order to build suspense?
As one of the main conventions of a
thriller is ‘suspense’ through this
question we are able to identify the most
effective way of creating it according to
various people. All ag groups seem to
like a different way that suspense is
created, which means that when creating
the opening for our thriller, we will need
to focus on all the aspects: sound, music
and special effects/ editing techniques.
This gives us a wider range of things that
we can do, and work with. However as
the main target audience is teenager we
will make sure that we use
6. What do you think is critical to be included in
an opening of a new film?
Through this question we are able to tell
what people are looking for in an opening
sequence, giving us guidelines of what to
include in ours. From the results you can
easily tell that all the age groups like the idea
of a ‘Ambiguity/cliff hanger’, which makes it
clear that it is something that needs to be
included in our own thriller opening.
7. What do you think should not be included in
the opening of a new film?
On the contrary, you can see that
not all age groups agree on what
should not be included in a thriller
opening. As our main target are
teenagers we have decided that in
our own opening we will not use a
‘plot summary’.
