Evaluation - publishers
1. The positives and negatives of publishing with different institutions
2. POSITIVES • They clearly have experience as they publish 14 magazines • My magazine could evolve to online as they run 7 websites • My magazine could go to the US like many of their existing publications • They clearly have links in the media world • They host 9 events which my media product could be involved with. NEGATIVES • They focus heavily on guitar-based music, which my magazine doesn’t • There is perhaps too many products which might result in not enough focus on individual magazines • Events, websites ands apps are developing which steal the limelight with the print based media. Classic Rock Classic Rock Prog Computer Music Future Music Guitar Aficionado (US) Guitar Legends (US) Guitar Techniques Guitar World (US) Guitarist Guitarist (Australia) Metal Hammer Revolver (US) Rhythm Total Guitar
3. NME Uncut POSITIVES • They don’t publish any magazines of the same genre as mine which reduces competition • They publish a wide range of magazines over many different sectors and not just music, so they have wide knowledge of each • The music magazines that they do publish are very successful so it gives me confidence in my product • They have links in nearly every aspect of media NEGATIVES • They only publish two music magazines so this shows they’re not entirely dedicated to music • They publish a large amount of magazines, so focus on just my magazine might be minimal
4. The Word Mixmag POSITIVES • They already publish Mixmag, which has a very similar genre to my magazine so this shows they specialise in this area of music • They don’t publish too many magazines, so it would be easy for me to have input and to contribute • They run the world's biggest clubbing social network called Don’t Stay In. The clubbing scene is something which my audience are expected to be interested in, so these partner well • The fact that they run a successful website shows that my media product could go online NEGATIVES • They only publish two music magazines so perhaps they don’t have as much experience as larger companies such as Bauer Media • The magazines they publish are monthly, and as my magazine was aimed to be released weekly, there could be some implications here
5. So which one? I have decided that, if I were to publish my media product, I would look towards a smaller company such as Development Hell. This is because they show experience in my subject area of electronic music – as they publish Mixmag. The risk of competition is reduced. If I were to go and publish my magazine with another company, then the audience of my magazine and Mixmag would face severe competition as we have a very similar target audience. By publishing with Development Hell or someone similar, I wouldn’t worry about competition as all the audience and profit would go to the same company. Also, the company are not overpowered with huge amounts of various different magazines. This is beneficial to me as more focus and time can be spent on my magazine to get it up to its full potential. Don’t Stay In is a clubbing social network that is run by Development Hell. I feel that, as my magazine specialises in dubstep, having links with this clubbing social network would be greatly favourable of my magazine and, more specifically, audience.
