* Overall throughout the cover page I have tried to stick to common conventions.
There is many similarities between both magazines as I used the real magazine as
influence in creating mine. Firstly, there's clear house created, both magazines
have recognisable red and black background and typography which is easily
representable for RnB music genre since both colours are cool and classy which
RnB is represented as. Both of the magazines have the main image at an angle, I
have chosen to do this as I feel it creates a cool look towards the main image
which is RnB overall. It could also be argued, even though the real magazine main
image has glasses on that direct address has been used in both, this is used to try
and entice the audience into wanting to buy the magazine. Another thing which is
very similar and is sticking to common codes and conventions is that there is a
large masthead, the masthead also covers the main image a little, this would be
in my magazine since it’s the very first edition, therefore there will be no brand
identity. By using a large and bold masthead is the only other way of catching my
audiences attention. My magazine and the R&B magazine both have the same
amount of cover lines which is 5. I have decided to use this amount as I believe its
not too many which will cover all my cover page leaving no space for the main
cover line and masthead but however is a good amount as it doesn’t mean dead
space is left on the cover page. Both magazines have plain black backgrounds, the
colour black has been used since it is a representation of RnB but also It is a good
colour as it complements the Red which is also used and is a representation of
RnB, not only this but as it is plain black it makes everything on the page stand
out, therefore the audience will be attracted.
5. *
* Both magazines have one main image at the front, this would also show the target
audience but as I’m trying to break away from common stereotypes I have used a young
white female rather than a young black male which is very common within RnB magazines.
On my magazine I have chosen to include issue number and date which the real magazine
does not. I have done this because I believe if you include the issue number on your first
magazine more people will be intrigued into buying it to see what this new magazine is
about, Since the R&B magazine may have been around for years they wouldn’t necessarily
need to do this. In my magazine I have included a cover mount which is a free RnB poster,
this helps to attract audience as they will know they will be getting their money worth, I
will need to attract audience since my magazine is new, however the real magazine has not
included a cover mount since they would already have audience and may have created ‘fan
loyalty’ which I will need to try and do. The real magazine has included a sell line, this is a
introductory headline below the masthead describing the magazine, this would attract
audience. I haven’t included this even though it’s a common convention as I didn’t have
much space, this would be an improvement which I could work on if ever other editions
were produced. Finally, my magazine has included a strip across, this allows people to
know what's in the magazine, if they see that a lot is in the magazine they will buy it since
it’s worth the money.
8. *Both my magazine and the real magazine’s content page have included the
masthead, this is so it creates a brand, Q’s masthead is a little smaller
than mine since they already have brand identity which I don’t. Both the
magazines also include at the top of the content page ‘content’ in big bold
writing. This is so the audience know where the content page so they can
find out where the article which they may have bought the magazine for is
in the magazine. Q and my magazine have both included pictures of artists
which will appear in our magazine, this is so people are aware of what's in
the magazine and what page. However, unlike me (I have included 4
images) Q has only included 2, Q wouldn’t necessarily need to pack the
content page with images of artists since they have people who buy their
magazine every time a new issue is out, therefore they wouldn’t
necessarily need to know. Rules of thirds have been used in both content
pages, this is so the page looks neat and the audience know where they’re
looking for the content, pictures, editorial etc.
9. *In my magazine I have decided to include a editorial, this is because since
my magazine is a first edition I would want the audience to get to know
the person(s) who created this magazine, I feel that the audience will
want to buy future magazines since they would know a lot about it. I have
in my magazine included social media, this is because I want to engage
with my audience, since my audience is 16-19, this is the age which are
very involved with social media, if I could get my magazine out there on
social media it would start the two step flow theory which will attract
more people to my magazine increasing my viewing figures. Finally, in Q
they have included a lot more content information, this would be more
typical of conventions to include a lot however since my magazine pages
have not been created I wouldn’t know what to add to the content page.
10. Drop cap

11. * Both magazines have included the drop cap, this is used to show when the article is
starting, this is a common convention of a music magazine. It also attracts the audience
in wanting to read the article. A stand first which is a introduction or a summary to an
article in a magazine, It usually is found just under the headline has been used in both
magazines, this introduces what the article is about, if the audience read this they may
want to read the rest of the article as it can be used to entice audiences in. My magazine
and the real magazine have included a Black and White theme, both look very typical of
RnB as it looks cool and black is a colour which represents RnB. My main image and the
real magazine’s main image have both been placed on the right side with the article on
the left. The images take up a large piece of the double page spread since it is all about
them. Finally, in the article on the real magazine there is a quote from the artist, in front
of my main image on the double page spread there is also quote from the artist. This is
used to show that the magazine can get an interview from famous artists, it also entices
the audience since some artists may give secret things out in the quotes.
