4. The week of 19th December, Billboard Top 100 says there are
15 hip-hop singles in the Top 50. This means that 26%-30% of
the Top 50 are hip-hop singles. I say 26%-30% as some my
consider The Weeknd as not a hip-hop act. The 26%
represents without The Weeknd and the 30% represents
including him. Hip-Hop occupies 10%-20% of the top 10 (again
considering The Weeknd situation). And hip-hop occupies 15%
(without The Weeknd) – 25% (including The Weeknd) of the
Top 20. There are 4-6 hip-hop singles in the top half of the 50
and 9 in the lower half. This tells me that hip-hop is a popular
genre but not as much as others. Though it takes around 30%
of the Top 50 other genres such as pop and rnb are more
popular. However hip-hop as a genre is continuing to grow,
here is the Billboard’s Top 50 in 2010:

8. In 2010, hip-hop took up 10% of the top 10, 20% of the top 20 and 20% of the top 50.
Here’s a comparison of how much hip-hop dominates:
Without including The Weeknd:
Year Top 10 Top 20 Top 50
2015 10% 15% 26%
2010 10% 20% 20%
Year Top 10 Top 20 Top 50
2015 20% 25% 30%
2010 10% 20% 20%
Including The Weeknd:
Including The Weeknd shows that hip-hop has an additional 10% of the top 50
compared to 2010, even without The Weeknd hip-hop still has an additional 6% of
the top 50. This tells me that hip-hop is a growing genre and it may be a good idea
to establish a hip-hop magazine now.
