General questions about music magazines
INITIAL INTRODUCTORY TASK 1
1. WHAT IS A MUSIC MAGAZINE?
 A music magazine is a publication which is
based around a specific genre and therefore
has a specific target audience. they are
based around sub-genres of music which are
genres such as, jazz, hip-hop, pop etc. And
the magazine is designed to assume that the
reader knows what the content of the
magazine will be about so therefore this
creates a sense of intimacy between the
reader and the magzine.
2. WHAT CONTENT WOULD YOU EXPECT TO FIND
IN A MUSIC MAGZINE?
 You would expect to find gossip about
celebrities or artists, tour/gig dates and ticket
information because fans like to go and see
their favourite artists performing live, success
stories to serve to show the story behind a
famous person’s life, exclusive interviews,
quotes of certain individuals, reviews of gigs,
music videos and singles and chart
information. The content will solely be based
upon the information in the media about the
genre at the time.
3. WHAT IMAGES WOULD YOU EXPECT TO FIND
IN A MUSIC MAGAZINE?
 You would expect to find images of bands, fans
with band members and artists. You may also find
images of musical festivals to give a glimpse into
the action and buzz of the particular music festival
and this will therefore mean images of live
performances by bands or artists. Album covers
could be used to show or promote the release of a
new album. Rock magazines tend to be more
provocative than magazines such as jazz
magazines. So images of mature adults' may be
found which can tend to be explicit. Whereas in a
pop magazine you may find an image of a boom
box used as a prop and the connotations of this is
seen as a “ghetto” and seen to represent current
4. IDENTIFY GENERAL
CHARACTERISTICS/FEATURES THAT YOU WOULD
EXPECT TO FIND IN ALL MUSIC MAGAZINES
 You are likely to find direct address used a lot to
create that intimacy between the reader and the
magazine.
 A masthead that links to the sub-genre.
 The date, price and barcode are a legal
requirement.
 Anchorage text about the editor of the magazine
or an artist.
 A strap line and cover lines to attract the
attention of the readers attention and top give
them an insight to what the content will be
about.
