Community service is work done by a person or a group of people that
benefits others. Performing community service is done voluntarily and it can
help any group of people in need, for instance, children, senior citizens, the
disabled and animal shelters. It can also be used to improve places such as a
local park of historic building.
The act of conducting community service gives one the opportunity to
help others by improving someone’s life and making the community better.
Moreover, new knowledge and experience can be gained while performing
community service. Community service brings personal benefits and makes
participants more responsible, organized and compassionate. Not only that,
while doing community service, new friends can be gained.
For this module, my team of 20 members decided to visit the
orphanage! We wanted to share our happiness towards the kids and put a
beaming smile on their faces :)

Siah Mong and I teamed up to be the financial controllers of the team. As
financial controllers, our main responsibility was to plan, manage and keep
track of the spending throughout the entire project. At the start of the
project, we collected RM100 each from each member, amounting to a total
of RM2,000. We first had a meeting to allocate budgets for items to be spent
on. Later, we would then advise the financial matters for every department.
The following is a break-down of our job scopes throughout the whole
initiative.

FIRST MEETING
All 20 of us discussed
whether to visit the
orphanage or go for
street feeding. We
also assigned our
organizational
positions.
PREPARE BRIEF
PROPOSAL
A few of us wrote the
proposal to be reviewed
by our lecturer, Ms Tay
Shir Men. Also, me and
Siah Mong discussed
and prepared the
budget list.
COLLECTION OF MONEY
As stated in the brief, each
student is able to claim a
maximum of RM100 each. As
such, me and Siah Mong
collected RM100 from each
member by cash and some
through online transfer,
amounting to a total of
RM2,000.

PREPARE DETAILED
BUDGET
I prepared the
detailed budget to
obtain a more
accurate estimate.
This is part of the budget
for transportation.
For instance, the
transportation cost for
the visitation day would
cost RM126 for a total of
3 cars to accommodate
all of us.
Excel was
used to
calculate the
budget.
ADVISE ON BUDGET FOR
EACH DEPARTMENT
After coming up with the
detailed budget, we
advised each
department on their
respective budgets.
For example, RM600 is
allocated to the F&B
team.

PREPARE CLAIM FORMS
We both prepared the claim
forms for:
- Expenditure Claim Form
- Mileage Claim Form
This is to allow our
members to write down
their spendings and
mileage for this community
service project. We also
requested them to attach
the receipts on an A4
paper for record keeping
purposes.
IKEA
The person in charge /
caretaker of the
orphanage said that
she would love to have
a shelf to keep
documents. Thus, our
commander and
deputy commander
told the finance team
to purchase the shelf.

We looked at all
the shelves to
search for the most
suitable one.

to get 2 of it.

Once we jotted the code
number for the shelf, we
proceeded to collect the
unfixed shelf in the box.
Furthermore, the media team
managed to film some scenes
of us purchasing the shelves.
They gave creative instructions
to film. On the picture on the
left, our deputy commander,
Adele was instructed to push
the trolley towards the camera.
It was a wonderful outing with
the team after our mid-terms.

GROCERY SHOPPING
The deputy commander
(Darren) and financial
controllers (Siah Mong & I)
went to Aeon to purchase
some dry good for the
orphanage.
The caretaker gave us a
list of items that they
need so we bought
according to the list
given.
Eg: Basmathi rice, lipton
tea, dishwash,
detergent, garbage
bags & etc

DRY RUN
One day before the
visitation, we had a
dry run for all the
games and
activities.
We also
packed all the
gifts and
snacks.
I was assigned to be
the facilitator for the
games and activities
on the visitation day
so throughout the dry
run, we tried out the
games to get
ourselves familiarized.

FINALLY! THE DAY THAT WE HAVE BEEN PLANNING FOR HAS ARRIVED!
Final Briefing
The team
gathered in
Taylor’s University
at 8:30am for a
final briefing.
Depart to Destination!
We departed at 9am
to Rumah Kebajikan
Karunai Illam.
And we’re here!

Getting to Know
the Kids
The kids were divided into
groups and we introduced
each other. They came up
with team names and
wrote down what they love
on the mahjung paper. I
was the facilitator for a
group.
Let’s Play!
This was one of the game
we played. Satay sticks
and plasticine were used
to build the structure. From
my observation, the kids
love hands on work and
are eager to experiment
new things.
Measuring the Structure
A measuring tape was
used to determine the
tallest structure. The
team with the tallest
and most stable
structure scores!

SUCCESS!
This was my group’s
structure! This activity
made them learn about
teamwork and
perseverance to keep
trying despite failing.
LUNCH TIME!
Before the kids have their
meal, they would all sit
together and pray. As the
kids are vegetarian, we
prepared vegetarian fried
rice and noodles for them.
We also bought drinks for
them such as Vitagen &
Milo.
Hand Painting!
This was done by all
the kids as a memory
for them to keep in
the orphanage.

This was taken at the
end of the event, right
before we bid
farewell.
WINNER!
The group I facilitated
was the champion of
the day! We bought
snacks as prizes for
them.
GIFT FOR THE KIDS &
CARETAKER
We donated two Ikea
shelves as the caretaker
wished to have one.
Thus, we decided to
grant her wish!

It’s been a pleasure working with all 19 of them!
Oh wait, one more selfie for the car ride
Though it was a long day, it was a wonderful day spent with
the kids. We were glad that we made their day.

COLLECTION OF CLAIM
FORMS
Me and Siah Mong
collected the claim forms
for expenditure and
mileage along with the
receipts.
SIGN CLAIM FORMS
After checking the
forms, I signed the forms
and the respective
receipts attached.
CALCULATE $
Siah Mong and I
calculated the total
amount spent for the
entire project and returned
the money to the
members based on the
amount they have
claimed.

arranged a date to
filmed all of us for a
reflection session. We
shared our thoughts
and feelings in the
video.
SUMMARY $
To wrap up the total
amount that we have
spent for the CSI project,
we created a summary
form for expenditure and
mileage.
Preparation of
presentation slides
I helped in editing
and designing the

END OF CSI PROJECT JOURNEY
PRESENTATION
DAY
On 16th November
2018, we showed
our video and
presented to our
lecturer, Ms Tay.
Watching the video
made us reminisce
on the day we visited
the orphanage and
we felt happy to see
all their smiles in the
video.
Compilation of All
Claim Forms
On the same day
itself, I submitted
the compiled
claim forms to our
lecturer.

The entire CSI project was indeed memorable, and I
gained a lot of valuable experiences. In the past, I
have done other charities such as street feeding
and donating food to the less fortunate families,
however this is my first time visiting the orphanage.
Visiting the orphanage was truly an eye-opening
experience for me.
It gave us something to reflect within ourselves that
we are blessed with what we have. I hope that
these ambitious children will grow up and achieve
great things in the future. May the lives of these
children become success stories someday.
All in all, I’m thoroughly grateful to have the
opportunity to visit the orphanage. It was truly a
heart-warming experience. I believe that there is so
much good that you can do in the world.
