3. Step 1
First, I selected my magazine cover and saved it
into Adobe Photoshop.
4. Step 2
I started my recreation at the top of the magazine
cover.
Using the Myriad Pro font on the text tool I wrote
“The Dark Knight Returns…”, the minor coverline
above the masthead.
5. Step 3
I then sourced an image of Empire magazine
masthead and added through the layer via copy
option on the “Magic Wand” tool.
The “Layer
Via Copy”
tool
6. Step 4
I then used the “Layer via Copy” tool to add the
Inception coverline to the image.
The “Layer
Via Copy”
tool
7. Step 5
After that using the Myriad Pro font on the “Text”
tool to create the coverline and pull quote from
the interview.
8. Step 6
I then sourced my coverlines on the left and right thirds and coloured some
of them in red with the “Paintbrush” tool to make it stand out against the
background.
The “Layer
Via Copy”
tool
9. Step 7
I drew an oval with the “Oval” tool.
I then used the “Paint Bucket” to colour it.
I wrote the text in and added it to the cover.
10. Step 8
I sourced the shape of the “Complete Hitchcock”
plug.
I then coloured it and text to keep it consistent
with the original image with the “Paintbrush” tool.
11. Step 9
I used the text tool to create the price, dateline,
web address and tagline “The World’s Biggest
Movie Magazine”
12. Step 10
I added the barcode from the original image with
the “Layer via Copy” tool.
The “Layer
Via Copy”
tool
13. Step 11
I got a picture of a city and inverted it on Microsoft
Word.
From there I used the “Lighting Effects” tool under
“Render” on the “Filter” option on the toolbar. I used
it to change the lighting of the image.
14. Step 12
I used the “Magnetic Lasso” tool to cut Harry from
the picture I had taken and inserted him into the
picture, completing the image.
15. What I’ve Learnt
I have learnt to:
Use the “magnetic lasso” tool.
To colour the image by using the “Lighting Effects”
tool.
To use Adobe InDesign.
To transfer files from Photoshop to InDesign.
16. Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths Weaknesses
The elements are
accurately placed.
The lighting isn’t accurate.
The fonts are accurate. Some of the coverlines had
to be coloured to be visible.
The model is accurately
posed.
The model doesn’t look like
the original.
The background is
accurate.
Some of the writing is hard
to read.
17. Am I Pleased?
I am pleased with it because it does have many
of the correct elements from the original
magazine.
However, it does not have many of the elements
correct e.g. the lighting.
Overall, I am pleased with it because I think it is
probably the best I could have done.
18. Comparison to the Original Cover
It does have the same fonts, but doesn’t have the
same lighting and background.
Overall I think that it does have many of the
original elements correct it doesn’t really look like
the original cover.
19. What I Would Change
I would change:
The lighting to be more authentic.
The model to be more accurate to the original
picture.
The background to be more realistic - not just
and inverted photo.
