2. The Bands
• Using The Clash will help HMV because it will depict the
shop as rebellious while also showing that it has a healthy
respect for the classics of music. This is good because
people want a music shop that has knowledge of classic
music.
• This band will help HMV because The Verve are alternative
and this will show consumers that HMV is slightly different
and a cool place to get music.
• I am also using the Sex Pistols “Never Mind the Bollocks”.
This helps HMV by shocking people. A bag with “sex” and
“bollocks” on it will grab more attention than putting an
RnB artist on the front. The colour scheme is also
provocative, so will force people to look at it.
3. Step One
• I created my bag on Adobe Photoshop CS5.1.
• I first selected “international paper” and
selected the correct measurements
(256x226mm).
4. Step 2
• I wanted to create a very clear-cut version of
this album because the original photo was
very blurred. I also thought that it had a very
distinctive colour scheme that would garner
attention. To achieve this, I decided to use
Rotoscope.
• I put a picture of the original London Calling
album cover on Photoshop.
• I then reduced the opacity.
5. Step 3
• I then used the paintbrush tool to trace over
the original image to create a clipping mask.
• When this was completed, I coloured the
image.
6. Step 4
• After that, I recreated the original “Never
Mind the Bollock, Here’s the Sex Pistols” cover
by colouring with the “paintbrush” tool and
using the “layer via copy” tool.
7. Step 5
• I got a picture of Che Guevara and then added
the HMV logo to it. To create the side of the
bag. I used this image because he is a well-
known revolutionary and this fitted with the
punk/pop art aesthetic I was trying to achieve.
8. Step 6
• For the underside of the bag, I acquired a
picture of Sid Vicious and then painted “Punk’s
Not Dead” on the image. I did this because Sid
Vicious is a punk icon and the words “Punks
Not Dead” suggest that it’s HMV that is
keeping it alive. I then added to this by making
it look like graffiti. I then added a barcode and
the HMV logo.
9. Step 7
• I then printed it out and stuck it together to
create the finished product.
10. What I’ve Learnt
• I have learnt how to create a clipping mask
and how to reduce the opacity to make two
images visible at once. I also learned how to
layer pictures and merge them to create one
picture from many.
11. Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths Weaknesses
The London Calling recreation looks
accurate.
The side of the bag was not flipped so it
looks the wrong way round.
The writing is well placed on the Never
Mind the Bollocks recreation.
The HMV logos are, on the whole badly
placed.
The Sid Vicious image is improved by the
graffiti – esque writing.
The scratches I put in detract from the
image.
The colouring of the image is accurate. I didn’t put the background on the
London Calling image.
The bag was finished in time. The bag was put together badly.
12. Am I Pleased with It?
• I am not pleased because I think that it was
completed to a poor standard and I made a lot
of mistakes that should have been corrected
at the time e.g. the assembly. Therefore I am
not pleased with this because it was not a well
made bag.
13. What Would I Change
• I would flip the Che Guevara image so it
looked like it was the right way up.
• I would also add a background to the London
Calling image.
• I would probably have made the graffiti on the
underside more realistic and authentic-
looking.
