Title: Why do people make no efforts to protect the environment? And what is the
protection of environment?
It is accepted that pollution is a serious problem today and protecting the environment is a shared
responsibility. However, it seems that people rarely have any real actions or efforts to improve
our environment. The following essay will discuss the causes of this situation and give some
methods to protect our beautiful planet.
To start with, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed,”
say Mahatma Gandhi. It is easy to realize why people do not make attempts to protect the
environment although they are fully aware of how important it is. In fact, most people only think
about the short- term benefits they have and their present life. It means that they do not see any
immediate impacts of pollution on their health or life and they think protecting the environment
is not so urgent. Sometimes, some people even think that protecting the environment is the job of
government and some huge organizations. They, therefore hesitate to contribute to this effort. In
the case of companies, many companies want to reduce their production cost and maximize their
profits by ignoring the damage they have caused to the environment. For instance, Vedan food
4. company , which owned by Taiwan and the factory was built in 1991 in Long Thanh district ,
Dong Nai province, Ho Chi Minh city, was caught when discharging a large amount of untreated
wastewater into Thi Vai river then made serious pollution for Thi Vai river almost 90% and
impacted abysmally on surrounding people ( from www.doko.vn). In reality, factories only build
the waste treatment system when they are forced to and some would rather pay a fine than try to
protect the environment. For example, BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Water and Sewer
Commission paid a $235,000 fine for violating the Clean Water Act by discharging raw sewage
and pollutants into local waterways in and around Boston and The decree was the result of an
enforcement action brought by the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of the Environmental
Protection Agency (from www1.whdh.com). In general, governments have talked for years about
an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but many countries still regard economic
growth as their main concern and this agreement is still out of reach.
The question is what we can and should do to protect the environment. First of all, it is a fact that
individual’s efforts can make a difference. If people try to avoid their reckless spending habit, we
can reduce pollution and protect our natural resources as well. At home, we should classify waste
so that it can be collected and recycled. In addition, the habit of using paper bags and
environmentally – friendly products should be encouraged in the community. It cannot be denied
that education plays the key role in this job. At school, children must learn how important wild
animals are and why we need to protect our beautiful world with some practical actions. As to
companies, they must be willing to minimize the negative impacts of their production progress
on the environment and protecting the environment should be seen as an equally important task
together with making money. When it comes to political leaders, they should use their power to
5. issue laws and policies to reduce climate change and preserve wildlife. If all get involved in the
job, it is not so hard to achieve the good results.
In conclusion, the protection of the environment is vitally important and we must take wise steps
to do this job instead of talking about it only. It is a must to preserve the beautiful world for
future generation.
