Title: Do you think advertisings bring more positive effects far outweigh the negative
ones?
In the current period of globalization, advertising appear on all of mass media. Advertising has
proven their significant role in the society. However, many still question the impacts of
advertising on our lives. From my view of point, there are a lot of advertisings that effect
negatively on our lives currently. The purpose of this essay is to argue the benefits as well as the
problems that advertising may bring.
To begin with, “Advertising is the greatest art form of the 20th century”, said Marshall
McLuhan. It is obvious that advertising can help people in various ways. First of all, it connects
producers and consumers and helps people know about what is available on the market. In
addition, advertising in many different forms can provide essential information about the new
products. As a result, consumers may have a good choice when doing their shopping. More
importantly, advertising can stimulate the economic growth by encouraging people to buy and
consume more. Another fact is that advertising itself is an important industry which provides
many job opportunities and contributes a large proportion to our GDP. According to recent
4. survey in Vietnam, nearly fifteen percent of the workforces are now working in this sector and
their contribution to the government budget is increasing dramatically. It is also estimated that
this industry will experience steady growth in the coming years.
Advertising is, however, not totally free from drawbacks. In fact, in many cases, some
advertisements give some wrong information about functions of products, which make
consumers confused. Some companies even exaggerate the consequence, customers lose their
faith and they reveal that advertising has a great impact on our spending habit and sometimes
people even buy stuff simply because they cannot resist the tempting advertisements. For
example, the Pest Reject, which is a equipment use to reject insects by ultrasonic of BestBuy
Company and advertised by the Perfect choice program on television recently, was accused that
it is shoddy good by the customers in Ho Chi Minh city and Ha Noi city at Vietnam because it
cannot bring the good result as in advertising. (www.Tintuconline.com.vn), or Marketers love
splashing words in big, bold and colorful letters across a product that imply their product is
healthy whereas the fine print (like the ingredient table) shows a totally different view. Chocolate
pastry may be “RICH IN MAGNESIUM, CALCIUM and VITAMINS’ but at the same time if
you looked at the ingredient table you’ll see way high percentages of sugar, salt and fat
(www.ditch – diets – live – light .com). In other words, advertising may lead people to excessive
consumerism. According to Joshua Becker who is a minimalist, “Excessive consumption leads
to bigger houses, faster cars, trendier clothes, fancier technology, and overfilled drawers. It
promises happiness, but never delivers. Instead, it results in a desire for more… a desire which
is promoted by the world around us. And it slowly begins robbing us of life. It redirects our God-
given passions to things that can never fulfill. It consumes our limited resources.” Moreover,
5. advertising in many forms may annoy people because such adverts interrupt them when they are
working or enjoying a television program. For instance, we may receive some messages or phone
calls from insurance companies that convince us to use or buy their services and it is not
convenient when we are in the middle of a meeting or a lesson at school.
On the whole, advertising has proven their significant role in our society. However, the
government should have proper policies to develop this promising industry and at the same time
protect consumers.
