Emerson Mastery
Ralph Waldo Emerson makes a reasonable point when he says that if we can't expand past what we
know, we cannot advance ourselves. While this is true, it is quite broad and should specify what sort
of mastery and growth. What would mastery consist of? Can we truly 'master' anything? What if we
have no need to grow, if we are content having the one mastery? Does one need a mastery to want to
learn more? His statement may be true under certain conditions or if revised to include such outliers,
but as it is, the specifications are too loose. Mastery can present itself in many forms, it isn't
concrete. There isn't just the big milestone where you take a photo and receive a certificate for
achievement, there can be a child learning to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That dog didn't try to reach outside its current level to let the humans know it needed to go out, it
was a reflex response, though it has learned that the bark gets it outside. It has grown without
pushing itself to achieve more. Completely learning something has to happen in stages so that it can
be fully absorbed, so having one mastery before moving to something else is important but some
occur at the same time for better understanding of each as they relate to another. Its like a Chemistry
class, you learn how to completely do one basic formula and what it means before you can move to
the next. In a Chemistry class, you may also learn separate parts at the same time because they tie
together later on. It may seem all over the place but once you get to the end of that class, you have
many small masteries and you have mastered the class as a whole. Emerson also assumes that
everyone wants to expand upon themselves and to experience more, but this is untrue. Often, it is
unnecessary to go beyond what a job or course requires, so people won't push themselves because
they don't feel a need to do so. An old man who has been working in an auto body shop all his life
won't see a need to go learn how to knit or use all the bells and whistles on the smart phone his

Mastery
Mastery by George Leonard is a book that deals with the key terms and concepts anyone must know
to truly master any skill. The book gives us four different types of students, each different in there
learning method and in their achieved skill level. It also gives us the five steps to mastering any
skill.
The four different types of learners, the dabbler, the obsessive, the hacker, and the master. Each
learner has their own techniques of learning the same skills. The dabbler learns one skill or
technique very quickly but then gives up and moves on to a new area of study. The obsessive, like
the dabbler, learns the skills very quickly. Unlike the dabbler, the obsessive does not move on but
works twice as hard to keep his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The next key is a painfully obvious one, practice. Practice is needed to perfect any skill, as well as
master it. While trying to master a skill, many refer to practice as something they have not
something they do. Leonard goes on to write, that practice is a path upon which you travel, the
ending destination is mastery. Practice should become a part of daily life, not only something that
must be done but needs to be done. Surrender, is the next key, it is inevitable that any new learner
will feel clumsy. This sometimes can hinder the learning process, because the learner's defenses are
up. In order to master any skill you must get past the initial feelings of uncertainty are truly learn to
trust your instructor. If he or she asks you to do something, give it a shot, it just might work.
Personally I believe this next key is the most essential to the success of mastering any skill,
intentionality. Leonard describes intentionality as character, willpower, attitude, imaging, and the
mental game all wrapped up into one. The mental game is what I believe is the single most
important thing to success in any skill. Visualizing a perfect golf swing and then attempting will
help the shot. Golfer Jack Nicklaus said "A successful shot was fifty percent visualization, forty
percent setup and only ten percent swing." The last key to mastery the Leonard gives us is what he
calls "the edge." The edge comes when someone has mastered an art and is more likely to push the

Defense Of Mastery
Defense of Mastery is the conclusion of a chapter, one volume in an eight part series. Instead of a
memory game for the final test, Defense of Mastery requires research, and application. Many
equations in Mathematics, Science Experiments, and works of Literature use real life situations. In
Defense of Mastery, the students advance, using the skills they have learned to implement each core
subject into a topic. Research embarked over time has affected the quality of knowledgeable
professionalism, gifting a more in–depth look at the theme and topic, giving pathways for simple
and abundant connections. Slowly, as insight on the various subjects was taken, many of the
concepts that were acquired in our research could easily be applied to our Defense of Mastery. To

Primary School d/Dhh Students Trezek and Wang (2006) evaluated the effectiveness of utilizing the
Reading Mastery I program (Engelmann & Brunner, 1995) supplemented by Visual Phonics with
kindergarten and first–grade d/Dhh students. Three teachers in a Total Communication program and
13 students were included in the study that lasted over 8 months. Students' degree of hearing loss
ranged from severe to profound, and two of the first graders wore cochlear implants. Students were
divided into three groups based on their age for instructions. The pre–posttest achievement of
students was documented. A word reading test was administered to both kindergarteners and first
graders whereas pseudoword decoding and reading comprehension tests were only used for first
graders. The results showed that the word reading subtest scores were statistically significant (from

Mastery – The Keys to Success and Long–Term Fulfillment
The "Mastery" by George Leonard is a classic book teaching practical concepts inspired on Zen
philosophy. The content of this book does not only help us to understand what it is Mastery, but also
present us this as a different way to live. If we apply its keys and tools, the instructions given by
George Leonard can definitely be a life changing experience.
I have selected the most important concepts, keys, and tools that I learned, and that can be applied
both in people's lives and business. Learn about learning in the master's journey
The chapter one offered great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I learned from these five keys insightful concepts that if applied works as guidance to mastery. I
would like to emphasize two that I clearly see happening in business.
First, to open the door of mastery, we need to develop the ability to surrender to the teacher and
demands of the discipline we want to master. In other words it means to be humble and prepared to
sacrifice the activities we are used to. In business, we have to be prepared to surrender our time,
activities, and even social life sometimes in order to work and improve our business.
Second is the edge, which means to go beyond and test our limits. However, I must warn that this
can be beneficial only after many instruction, practice, surrender, and intentionality. A student may
feel the desire to go beyond the limits, to challenge him or herself. This can be perfectly applicable
to business when we feel that the company is prepared to expand or invest in a different product or
marketing. Once we have tested our limits, George Leonard instructed us that we have achieved a
new baseline, requiring "more training, more time on the plateau: the never ending path

I look at my computer just as it ticks to 10 o'clock, I hear my Mom calling to get to bed, but I can't.
Just a few more minutes turns into just a few more hours but I must keep working. Gabby has me

Then, they're there, right in front of me the whole time. Print, print, print, I chant in my head. Then
it comes, ready for turn in. When I receive it, it's like a song and the E shouts at me. I praise myself,
my hard work has paid off.
My central idea for this synthesis is how hard I've worked for each piece to make you strong and

This course has enlightened me to the concept of the learning organization and my role in it. Before

Of Senge's principles, the principle that impressed on me the most was Personal Mastery and the
understanding that leadership starts from within. I realized and understand now that we are all
managers and leaders in many facets of our lives and each play an integral role in the success of
ourselves and the businesses that employ us. I have obtained several new books that I look forward
to reading, such as Emotional Intelligence, Spiritual Leadership, and Covey's books, just to name a
few. I will do this all in my spare time, of course. You discussed a story of a man that walked
through a snow storm to get help for his family, and said something to the effect, that when he

reason. I have had many challenges in my life and have never given up. But for the last couple of

9 months of graduate school, is the one that really sparked something within me. I have deeply
enjoyed the opportunity to dig deeper into the Purpose Driven Life, and have open discussion with
my peers. And more importantly, I see and understand better now that my personal mastery, my role

Biven Mastery
In summary, both Ford and Bivens believe mastery in media arts is achievable. Both believe it takes
a combination of factors that include talent hard work deliberate practice and perseverance in order
to achieve mastery of the media arts. However, they differ in the amount of weight each factor holds
in order to achieve mastery within this field. Ford looks at mastery through fundamentals. Being
able to translate fundamentals and use them in any situation and understand them in a way that they
can be taught. While Bivens relies more on technology as a tool as the standard in his area of
expertise continues to rise. In addition, Bivens does not discredit the importance of luck and
opportunity and creating it in the absence of some.

The main implication is that while strategies exist to help individuals achieve mastery in media arts,
the onus is still on the individual to be proactive. Therefore, it is recommended that individuals
extend their learning beyond the technical aspects of media arts into the aesthetics and invest
considerable time and effort in "doing" their art. That is, find what they enjoy about art or continue
to explore art for their own sakes. This will help students balance the considerable time spent on the
technical aspect of the media arts. Secondly, finding and recruiting mentors to provide guidance and
support. Good coaching cannot be stressed enough in cultivating talent. The data from this research
shows how impactful this factor goes to achieving mastery in any domain. Thirdly, professional
networking and creating a portfolio to track progress. These strategies incorporate the concepts of
deliberate practice, hard work, opportunity and luck to create the right conditions for individuals to
attain mastery in media arts. Educators can help to create an environment that supports the
achievement of mastery. For example, by providing access to their own professional networks as
well as offering ample opportunities for students to practice their craft. It is also recommended that
further research is conducted to quantify the contribution

Mastery Learning Policy Analysis
On the first day of school the student of AHS walked in to discover the Mastery Learning policy
being put into effect.
Mastery Learning exercises the students' newly acquired right to retake tests and also makes an
adjustment to the weight of formative, summative and final assignments to better fit the students
needs. Mastery Learning was not implemented by the Department of Education, but by the
administration of District 7 all in efforts to produce successful and well–rounded students. However,
some students expressed the negative impacts this new policy that have on them while others are
thankful for the second chance.
Similarly, the mastery learning policy changes the weight of formative, summative and final from

"It gives us another chance to bring up our grades." says freshman Kristina Marin adds.
"The remediation assignment actually helps me relearn the material." junior Kayla Dean.
Principal Howard expressed her support of theses statements when she declared the mission of
Mastery Learning as "To allow students to master the content with extra time to improve their
grades." "Students will take responsibility for their education.
The other part of the mastery learning policy, change in the weight of a formative, summative and

"It is harder to keep grades for that long," says freshman Mauricia Schofield.

After reading The Sports Gene and Outliers, it is determined that people become "talented" with
practice and there is no such thing as innate "talent". In Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, in chapter 2
it is said, "...10,000 hours of practice is required to achieve the level of mastery associated with
being a world–class expert–in anything." This supports the idea that people become "talented" with
practice. The quote supports the claim because if it is being said that it takes 10,000 hours to master
anything, it can be assumed that people do not have innate "talent", but rather have a level of
mastery over many hours of practice. It could be said on the opposite side of the argument that if it

Vocabulary Mastery In Language Learning
Introduction Nowadays, vocabulary takes an important part in the language use. However, it has
traditionally been underestimated within language teaching and its instruction was commonly
incidental and unplanned. The aim of this essay will be to stress the significance of vocabulary from
teachers' and learners' perspective, to deal with the mastery of English vocabulary, and to point out
the general strategies that surround vocabulary teaching, as well as to provide a general overview
about it
This essay is structured as follows. Section 1 attempts to establish the importance of vocabulary
within English language learning. Section 2 will provide a definition for vocabulary mastery, as well

The term vocabulary is defined by the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary as "all the words that
a person knows or uses". Similarly, the Cambridge Learner's Dictionary defines mastery such as
"great skill or understanding of something". Hence, the mastery of vocabulary can be understood as
the knowledge or skill that allow one to have a full command of a subject of study, in this case,
vocabulary.
Moreover, it is described that by mastering vocabulary, students can express their ideas, understand
and develop the other four basic competences. Thus, it could be said that the vocabulary mastery is
one of the main factors to master English language, but what do vocabulary mastery and knowing a
word entail? Generally, knowing a word involves knowing its form, its meaning and how to use it at
the basic level, according to Nation (2001, p. 26).
» The receptive and productive distinction
The terms receptive and productive may be applied to a variety of kinds of language knowledge and
use. However, when they are applied to vocabulary, these terms become much more specific,
covering all the aspects of what is involved in knowing a word. According to Nation (2001, p. 26–
28) and in broad terms, receptive and productive knowledge of a word involves or implies that

Mastery Journey
The importance of a role model
When we start a Mastery Journey one of the logical things to do is to find a role model in our field
of choice. This is a very important first step. Why? Because Mastery is a subject that you don't learn
in a book. Masters learn by doing, by experimenting, by trial and error. They are trailblazers that
open roads to new fields. In my case, becoming an Instructional Designer is key in accomplishing
my life's task. After a long search and reflection, Dr. Donald Kirkpatrick, who wrote the book on
evaluation in learning and development in the 1950s, the Kirkpatrick Model, became my source of
inspiration.

Learning And Mastery Based Learning
Wendy Trusty EDU 502 WA 1 May 1, 2015 Nondirective Learning and Mastery–Based Learning
There are many learning models available for teachers to use to ensure that students grow as learners
and master content in a timely progression. Nondirective learning and mastery–based learning are
two models that are frequently used by teachers to deliver instruction and assess student
performance. Nondirective learning is a teaching method from the personal family model of
learning; while, mastery learning is part of the behavioral systems family. Both learning methods
offer advantages and disadvantages for the teacher and student. It is the teacher's responsibility to
research different learning methods and determine which method, or methods will ... Show more

Goals of nondirective learning include: helping students to understand their own needs and values,
encouraging empathetic communication, developing emotionally, and becoming more self–aware.
Nondirective learning is considered a student–centered model for instruction. Students are
responsible for their own decisions about learning and provided choices during the learning process
(Siddiqui, 2013). Mastery learning is based on the work of Benjamin S. Bloom who "suggested that
although students vary widely in their learning rates and modalities, if teachers could provide the
necessary time and appropriate learning conditions, nearly all students could reach a high level of
achievement" (Gusky, 2010). In mastery learning, students should be given adequate time to
demonstrate mastery or complete remedial work. Teachers are responsible for creating units of
instruction that directly relate to defined learning objectives. Students move onto the next set of
objectives after demonstrating mastery (Huitt, 1996). In order to determine if students have
mastered the given learning objectives, teachers monitor student progress through the use of
formative assessments throughout the unit of instruction and administer summative assessments at
the end of the unit. Formative assessment data is used by the teacher to identify what students have
learned well, and what remediation is required. After analyzing the data, teachers use corrective

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma–which

They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary". – Steve

some useful skills such as how to find the right career path and how to conduct an interview. I wrote

When my adult partner and I were thinking of a research question we also wanted something that I
could build a product from. We both went through many ideas of what we were going to do for a
product to answer this research question. The first one was a way that case managers can catalog the
different clients based on the severity of their disability. This was to increase efficiency in the
workplace and a more effective treatment plan for the individuals. The second idea was about the
increase in efficiency and effectiveness and would combine the first idea, and making it more by

Mastery Trial
We leave in a secular society where most carry out their lives attempting to find their niche, that one
area where they excel and flourish. "How can one find that place," one might ask. The answer to that
all too common question is simple trial and error. As said by transcendentalist Author Ralph Waldo
Emerson, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never
grow." In order to develop and mature in the world, one must be open to new experiences and try
new things, or face the harsh reality of missing out on all potential opportunities to succeed. Mastery
cannot occur without first trial. World renowned tennis player Serena Williams did not wake up one
day and proceed to ace serves on the court; she had to do something "beyond what [she] had already
mastered." She had to take a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reminisce on that feeling of deafening uncertainty, the way it consumed everything around you.
Now consider another time you attempted something new and enjoyed it. Ponder on that
exhilarating jump into the icy waters below you, or that bold moment you explained a new method
to solving a problem and were praised for ingenuity. These moments would cease to exist if you had
not tried something new. As theorized by psychologist Erik Erikson, humans must develop around
several developmental crisis, one of them being initiative versus guilt. This crisis states that humans
must develop a will to explore and try new things. If one does not achieve this capability, they will
be full of anxiety and guilt. This further expands on the need for people to experience new situations
and find mastery. A heart can only beat for so long before it eventually comes to a jarring halt. When
that time arrives, will you have lived out a life that was full of chances and fresh experiences? If yes,
you would have grown and developed through your life span, finding that niche, be it a sport or a

Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to measure the speed of sound in air and to determine the effects
of frequency on the speed of sound.
Apparatus (equipment used):
Signal generator: manufacturer– EMCO, model number– SS–1, range– 20Hz–2MHz, least count–
1Hz
Frequency meter: manufacturer– DEADALON CORPORATION, model number– N/A, range–
20Hz–2MHz, least count 1 kilohertz

In this experiment, the signal generator was set so that the frequency meter showed a reading of
1,803 Hz. The microphone was moved to a distance from the speaker so that the oscilloscope
displayed a straight diagonal line. This position was of the microphone was recorded as the initial
position, or beginning of a wavelength. The microphone was then moved farther in the same
direction until the oscilloscope displays the same horizontal line. This position was recorded as final
position, or the end of the wavelength. The distance between the two positions represents one
wavelength for this frequency. This was repeated for frequencies of 2,402 Hz, 3,002, Hz, 3,602 Hz,
and 4,201 Hz.
Method continued:
Data analysis: After the positions were recorded for frequencies 1,803 Hz, 2,402 Hz, 3,002 Hz,
3,600 Hz, and 4,201 Hz, the wavelength was determined for each. This was done by subtracting the
initial position from the final position (position final–position initial=wavelength). Using the
calculated wavelength, the speed of sound in air at each frequency was determined by multiplying
the wavelength by the frequency (speed of sound=wavelength x frequency). By adding the five
speed values and dividing by the number of speeds, the average speed of sound was calculated.
Then 344 m/s was used as the accepted

Robert Greene Mastery Summary
In the video presentation "Mastery", the author, Robert Greene give us an idea of some of the
concepts that he discusses in deep in his book. The author explains, in life many times we need to
solve problems, create a project or lead one, and along the way we need to make decision to
complete that project. The problem is we always go thru the same path, we make decisions from
what we know at that moment our comfort zone. The author estate that when we finish the project or
solved a problem we have the sensation that something is missing and we feel we can do it better
(Robert Grenne, Mastery, Talk at Google). Greene says that the creativity comes thru a process and
this process begins with a critical first step of choosing a field or a subject to persuade (Robert

After being challenged to compare my scores on two summaries, I noticed that, for the most part,
my scores improved. The most noticeable improvements were from the "summary mastery" and
"style" categories, where I scored higher on Summary 2 than Summary 1. Applying for the Osprey

improved. To begin, my score from the "summary mastery" category improved from a 2 to a 4.
Whenever I was writing summary 1, summarizing in such a professional way was very new to me.

When writing Summary 1, the concept of "style" was still fresh on my mind because I had never
learned about the specifics, until this class. After rereading Summary 1, I noticed that I used
simplistic sentences, my word choice was not fully developed, and I used passive voice in some of
my sentences. I did not receive any peer advice on style, so I tried hard to study my sentences in
Summary 2 and make corrections. Whenever I was writing my Summary 2, I read each of my
sentences aloud to make sure the style sounded appropriate. I made my sentences more complex,
added variety, used active verbs, and used a more mature word choice. For example, in Summary 2,
I made this sentence more complex and used active verbs, "They state disabled students face
barriers while receiving education, which lead to lack of support from faculty and peers, lack in
financial support, and lack of participation." I have not mastered the "style" category yet, but I have
improved. I am still working on making my diction precise, instead of having an iffy choice of

that lives at an estate in California. However, Buck got stolen and shipped to the Yukon, during the
gold rush, where he was sold to multiple different owners. In order to survive, he has to fight and

matter who is in it, and who owns him. Buck has struggled for mastery when he was in the sled–dog

Buck was in the battle with Spitz. "He did not check himself, but drove in upon Spitz shoulder to
shoulder, so hard that he missed the throat"(London, 40). This quote supports the theme of mastery,

The Theory Of Learning Theory
Benjamin Bloom, an instructor and university examiner for the Board of Examinations at the
University of Chicago, proposed his Mastery Learning Theory in 1976 (1). However, the idea of
mastery learning was not authentic to Bloom; the origin of these concepts were found in the writings
of Greek philosophers including Aristotle. Bloom's major contribution to these principles is time as
the foundation of mastery learning is the ability for the student to show they have mastered content
before progressing to the next unit or area (2). Bloom's Taxonomy, born from the Mastery of
Learning Theory, is a scale used to measure levels of expertise required to achieve a certain
outcome; an instructor can quickly evaluate each student's level of understanding during a lesson.
The idea is to give each student the time too show skill in each level of learning, therefore,
mastering the lesson. The lesson is broken down into these levels, each building on the last. There
have been many contributors to the mastery learning theory and an entire paper could be written
solely to list those people and their contributions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the theory
by demonstrating Bloom's Taxonomy and how it's use maximizes student learning.
It's best to think of Bloom's Taxonomy as a pyramid with six levels. Each student starts at the
bottom level and works their way to the top, once they complete the pyramid, it is concluded they
will have mastered the lesson/concept. Imagine you are a

Mastery Reflection For my mastery project, I elected to improve my sewing skills or, more
accurately, my lack thereof. I chose sewing –both embroidery and machine stitching– as the subject
of my project for various reasons. One reason is that I enjoy giving my close friends handmade gifts

reason, though less influential in my decision, is that I would eventually like to be able to make
myself clothing. I have, in the past, used my basic sewing skills to fashion halloween costumes and

The artist from the renaissance period are thought to be the high Kings, and even associated to

many greats works by artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo Di Vinci. However, with great skills,
the artists taught themselves to be the best of the best, and compared themselves with the greats
from Ancient Greece. Artists like Michelangelo and Rubens critiqued the artists in their age in order
to see who among them can create perfection, or reach true mastery in art. While there were artists

He was critic of perfection, often criticized his own work for not reaching a point of perfection. In
'De Imitatione Statuorum", Rubens explains and criticizes the artists of his generation, and
arrogance in their works. In the article, Rubens criticizes artists who have imitated works from the
past in order to gain skill and mastery in art by recreating what have been created by the greats from
the past. However, Rubens both is for and against the argument of imitation and copying of antique
statues and works because artists who have mastered the skill can truly understand and learn from
the work before them. Unskilled artists will create work that is both pernicious and disrespectful to
the art. Rubens explain his reasoning from the passage in the article "difference of shades; where the

natural; for the gloss of the stone, and sharpness of the light...raise the surface above its proper pitch,
or, at least, fascinate the eye." Rubens is stating that when an artist is able to understand

Drift And Mastery Analysis
What is the history of "drift" and "mastery" in democratic capitalism during the first half of the
twentieth century? The last century has been a struggle in avoiding drift and striving for mastery for
American political leaders due partially to the advances of culture and technology in the United
States throughout the same time period (Hacker & Pierson, 2010). Manufacturing, television,
advances in military weaponry and the progressing inclusive tendencies of a developing American
culture proved difficult for politicians to manage because they were all very new challenges for the
global community as a whole. It was these challenges that distinguished two major political
mechanisms: drift and mastery (Lappman, 1914). Drift is described as ... Show more content on

Lippmann thought that "scientific spirit is the discipline of democracy" and believed that society
would "have to substitute purpose for tradition" in order to progress (Lippmann, 1914). Political

polarization," which results from drift policy related inequalities that cause problems in society
(Hedges, 2015). Hedges' views align with that of Lippmann on the importance of the utilization of
reason over the temptation of the monetary promises usually involved in creating drift policies that
favor a minority of Americans and causes them harm. This perspective is also central to Jacob
Hacker and Paul Pierson, authors of Winner–Take–All Politics How Washington Made the Rich

Determining Mastery For Instructional Strategies
Determining Mastery for Instructional Strategies Determining mastery can be a complex procedure
even for the most experienced educators. It involves not only a designated percentage on
assessments, but also must take into account the cognitive complexity of the assessment as well as
the nature of the learning goal students are being asked to master. This further requires consideration
for "the rigor of expectations set for students' performance" (Guskey, 2001). An assessment can
contain items or tasks that are so challenging that even students who receive a low "cutoff" score
can be deemed as having achieved mastery. For example, think about the Graduate Records
Examination (GRE). Though a student may only answer half of the test questions for the GRE
physics exam correctly, due to the complexity of the questions, they will have performed better than
over 70 percent of those who take the test. Another factor in determining mastery is professional
judgement. Like it or not, scores on assessments aren't always completely accurate and some level
of professional judgement is required to adjust scores for error, for example, slightly lowering the
score out of concern for false rejection–or incorrectly "classifying a master as a non–master"
(Guskey & Andermann, 2014). This false rejection could be detrimental for borderline students in
that it would affect their confidence and their desire to continue pursuing mastery as well as causing
otherwise talented students not to pass a

Mastery In The Call Of The Wild
The desire for power has always been a common story, repeated many times, over and over again.

he experiences what life in the wild is like. Eventually, he becomes one with the wolves. The
struggle for mastery is a tiring battle that doesn't guarantee victory. However, In the story The Call
of the Wild, Buck was clearly up to the task, as he became the master of the wild at the end of the
novel.
Let's talk about Buck's first feeling of true mastery. When Buck first arrived at the Klondike, he

After Buck killed Spitz, Buck felt that he had earned Spitz's previous position as sled team leader.
However, Perrault and Francois decided to give that position to Sol–leks instead, and Buck refused

ran him about for the better part of an hour. They threw clubs at him. He dodged. They cursed him,
and his fathers and mothers before him, and all his seed to come after him down to the remotest
generation, and every hair on his body and drop of blood in his veins; and he answered curse with
snarl and kept out of their reach. He did not try to run away, but retreated around and around the
camp, advertising plainly that when is desire was met, he would come in and be good" (London 45).
After a long chase lasting for an hour (or more), the two finally decide to just give up and give Buck
the lead role, which boosted Buck's ego and sense of mastery. They gave up because they wasted an

Mabel Dodge Speech Good Evening my fellow neighbors. Most of you know me and for the ones
who do not, I am Mabel Dodge. I am the daughter from a family in Buffalo and had what was
considered the best education for girls in the nineteenth– century. Instead of going to college, I got
married, became a mother and soon, a widow. Later, I traveled abroad and soon married a Boston
architect, Edwin Dodge who I later realized the passion I had was no more– so I divorced him. I
became bored and began to crave art, the beauty and inspiration! A "salon" in Florence, Italy that I
created for the purpose of attracting the most up– and– coming artists in Europe, had me become
well known and even a muse for one of Gertrude Stein's image poems. I reluctantly joined Edwin
my husband at the time, who was eager to come back to the United States. I settled in an apartment
on the lower Fifth Avenue which most of you have been in for my "evenings" of controversial
debates. What will women do with their new freedom? Not turn evil as many of you would think.
Women could create lives for themselves, become economically independent and independent
throughout. There are opportunities for women outside of the home. There is a whole other life
outside the house. Yes, some women will have to learn to govern themselves but that is only because
they were never given the chance to in their lives before. I quote Walter Lippmann in, A Note On

Struggle For Mastery And In The Call Of The Wild
Struggle for Survival and Mastery and in The Call of The Wild
In The Call of the Wild written by Jack London, Buck doesn't simply want to survive, he wants to
master his environment. His struggle for survival is accented by Charles Darwin's idea of natural
selection, another prominent idea in the story. Likewise, Herbert Spencer's concept of Social
Darwinism is present in the novel. The themes of the struggle for survival as well as the struggle for
mastery are integrated throughout The Call of the Wild. The struggle for survival is a major point
throughout Buck's journey. From the very beginning Buck learns to lose his morals to survive. He
learns to steal food without getting caught and how to kill other dogs. He learns to appease the dogs
drivers as well as other dogs by following "The Law of Club and Fang". He learns how to endure
the brutal environment. However Buck doesn't just want to just survive the Northland, he wants to
conquer it. When Buck returns to camp after he kills a bull moose he finds that John Thornton, his
last tie to humanity, has been slaughtered by the Yeehats. He jumps on the Yeehat Chief and tears his
throat, quickly killing the leader. He discovers humans are not very difficult to ... Show more

Natural Selection is the process in which animals that are able to adapt to certain environments
survive and live on to reproduce. There are many instances when Buck physically adapts in order to
survive the harsh conditions of the Northland. When Buck is taken he has never seen snow and has
never had to work before. He begins to starve on the husky's diet until his stomach adjusts and is
able to take every ounce of nutrients from the food. His paws are bloodied and broken from the long
treks and difficult work but they gradually heal to become stronger and more effective on the snow.
Buck did not only have to adapt physically, he also had to adapt

Emerson Mastery

  • 1. Emerson Mastery Ralph Waldo Emerson makes a reasonable point when he says that if we can't expand past what we know, we cannot advance ourselves. While this is true, it is quite broad and should specify what sort of mastery and growth. What would mastery consist of? Can we truly 'master' anything? What if we have no need to grow, if we are content having the one mastery? Does one need a mastery to want to learn more? His statement may be true under certain conditions or if revised to include such outliers, but as it is, the specifications are too loose. Mastery can present itself in many forms, it isn't concrete. There isn't just the big milestone where you take a photo and receive a certificate for achievement, there can be a child learning to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That dog didn't try to reach outside its current level to let the humans know it needed to go out, it was a reflex response, though it has learned that the bark gets it outside. It has grown without pushing itself to achieve more. Completely learning something has to happen in stages so that it can be fully absorbed, so having one mastery before moving to something else is important but some occur at the same time for better understanding of each as they relate to another. Its like a Chemistry class, you learn how to completely do one basic formula and what it means before you can move to the next. In a Chemistry class, you may also learn separate parts at the same time because they tie together later on. It may seem all over the place but once you get to the end of that class, you have many small masteries and you have mastered the class as a whole. Emerson also assumes that everyone wants to expand upon themselves and to experience more, but this is untrue. Often, it is unnecessary to go beyond what a job or course requires, so people won't push themselves because they don't feel a need to do so. An old man who has been working in an auto body shop all his life won't see a need to go learn how to knit or use all the bells and whistles on the smart phone his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Mastery Mastery Mastery by George Leonard is a book that deals with the key terms and concepts anyone must know to truly master any skill. The book gives us four different types of students, each different in there learning method and in their achieved skill level. It also gives us the five steps to mastering any skill. The four different types of learners, the dabbler, the obsessive, the hacker, and the master. Each learner has their own techniques of learning the same skills. The dabbler learns one skill or technique very quickly but then gives up and moves on to a new area of study. The obsessive, like the dabbler, learns the skills very quickly. Unlike the dabbler, the obsessive does not move on but works twice as hard to keep his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next key is a painfully obvious one, practice. Practice is needed to perfect any skill, as well as master it. While trying to master a skill, many refer to practice as something they have not something they do. Leonard goes on to write, that practice is a path upon which you travel, the ending destination is mastery. Practice should become a part of daily life, not only something that must be done but needs to be done. Surrender, is the next key, it is inevitable that any new learner will feel clumsy. This sometimes can hinder the learning process, because the learner's defenses are up. In order to master any skill you must get past the initial feelings of uncertainty are truly learn to trust your instructor. If he or she asks you to do something, give it a shot, it just might work. Personally I believe this next key is the most essential to the success of mastering any skill, intentionality. Leonard describes intentionality as character, willpower, attitude, imaging, and the mental game all wrapped up into one. The mental game is what I believe is the single most important thing to success in any skill. Visualizing a perfect golf swing and then attempting will help the shot. Golfer Jack Nicklaus said "A successful shot was fifty percent visualization, forty percent setup and only ten percent swing." The last key to mastery the Leonard gives us is what he calls "the edge." The edge comes when someone has mastered an art and is more likely to push the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Instead of a memory game for the final test, Defense of Mastery requires research, and application. Many equations in Mathematics, Science Experiments, and works of Literature use real life situations. In Defense of Mastery, the students advance, using the skills they have learned to implement each core subject into a topic. Research embarked over time has affected the quality of knowledgeable professionalism, gifting a more in–depth look at the theme and topic, giving pathways for simple and abundant connections. The plot of Gattaca, will definitely be incorporated into the Defense of Mastery as it highlights a probable future of genetic modification where humans are valued for their genetics rather than their standards. Primary Reading Mastery Primary School d/Dhh Students Trezek and Wang (2006) evaluated the effectiveness of utilizing the Reading Mastery I program (Engelmann & Brunner, 1995) supplemented by Visual Phonics with kindergarten and first–grade d/Dhh students. Three teachers in a Total Communication program and 13 students were included in the study that lasted over 8 months. Students' degree of hearing loss ranged from severe to profound, and two of the first graders wore cochlear implants. Students were divided into three groups based on their age for instructions. The pre–posttest achievement of students was documented. I learned from these five keys insightful concepts that if applied works as guidance to mastery. I would like to emphasize two that I clearly see happening in business. First, to open the door of mastery, we need to develop the ability to surrender to the teacher and demands of the discipline we want to master. In other words it means to be humble and prepared to sacrifice the activities we are used to. In business, we have to be prepared to surrender our time, activities, and even social life sometimes in order to work and improve our business. Second is the edge, which means to go beyond and test our limits. However, I must warn that this can be beneficial only after many instruction, practice, surrender, and intentionality. A student may feel the desire to go beyond the limits, to challenge him or herself. This can be perfectly applicable to business when we feel that the company is prepared to expand or invest in a different product or marketing. Once we have tested our limits, George Leonard instructed us that we have achieved a new baseline, requiring "more training, more time on the plateau: the never ending path ... This supports the idea that people become "talented" with practice. Nondirective learning and mastery–based learning are two models that are frequently used by teachers to deliver instruction and assess student performance. Nondirective learning is a teaching method from the personal family model of learning; while, mastery learning is part of the behavioral systems family. Goals of nondirective learning include: helping students to understand their own needs and values, encouraging empathetic communication, developing emotionally, and becoming more self–aware. Nondirective learning is considered a student–centered model for instruction. Students are responsible for their own decisions about learning and provided choices during the learning process (Siddiqui, 2013). Mastery learning is based on the work of Benjamin S. Bloom who "suggested that although students vary widely in their learning rates and modalities, if teachers could provide the necessary time and appropriate learning conditions, nearly all students could reach a high level of achievement" (Gusky, 2010). In mastery learning, students should be given adequate time to demonstrate mastery or complete remedial work. Teachers are responsible for creating units of instruction that directly relate to defined learning objectives. Students move onto the next set of objectives after demonstrating mastery (Huitt, 1996). In order to determine if students have mastered the given learning objectives, teachers monitor student progress through the use of formative assessments throughout the unit of instruction and administer summative assessments at the end of the unit. Formative assessment data is used by the teacher to identify what students have learned well, and what remediation is required. • 59. The Theory Of Learning Theory Benjamin Bloom, an instructor and university examiner for the Board of Examinations at the University of Chicago, proposed his Mastery Learning Theory in 1976 (1). However, the idea of mastery learning was not authentic to Bloom; the origin of these concepts were found in the writings of Greek philosophers including Aristotle. Bloom's major contribution to these principles is time as the foundation of mastery learning is the ability for the student to show they have mastered content before progressing to the next unit or area (2). Bloom's Taxonomy, born from the Mastery of Learning Theory, is a scale used to measure levels of expertise required to achieve a certain outcome; an instructor can quickly evaluate each student's level of understanding during a lesson. The idea is to give each student the time too show skill in each level of learning, therefore, mastering the lesson. The lesson is broken down into these levels, each building on the last. There have been many contributors to the mastery learning theory and an entire paper could be written solely to list those people and their contributions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the theory by demonstrating Bloom's Taxonomy and how it's use maximizes student learning. It's best to think of Bloom's Taxonomy as a pyramid with six levels. Each student starts at the bottom level and works their way to the top, once they complete the pyramid, it is concluded they will have mastered the lesson/concept. Imagine you are a ... • 61. Mastery Research Paper Mastery Reflection For my mastery project, I elected to improve my sewing skills or, more accurately, my lack thereof. I chose sewing –both embroidery and machine stitching– as the subject of my project for various reasons. One reason is that I enjoy giving my close friends handmade gifts on special occasions, and I felt that sewing would greatly improve the quality of these gifts. Another reason, though less influential in my decision, is that I would eventually like to be able to make myself clothing. I have, in the past, used my basic sewing skills to fashion halloween costumes and the like, but I have not done so in a technically proficient manner. Stitching costumes is one thing, but creating wearable, day–to–day clothes requires a far higher skill level, which was my goal as an end result. Though I began this project ... Most of my research consisted of watching online tutorials followed by trial and error. In fact, some of my research indicated that I should heed the words of others more often: I had decided to construct a pillowcase, and without consulting anyone, attempted to stitch the fabric directly onto the pillow. In my attempt, I broke the machine needle and stitched a horribly jagged and misshapen pillow. Eventually, I had to rip out all of the stitches and begin again, this time with some advice from my mother. Despite this bump in the road, I continued to research and attempt to replicate different embroidery stitches, while also improving my machine sewing skills by simply practicing straight stitches on ... The mixture of human compassion and deep religious piety created many greats works by artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo Di Vinci. In 'De Imitatione Statuorum", Rubens explains and criticizes the artists of his generation, and arrogance in their works. In the article, Rubens criticizes artists who have imitated works from the past in order to gain skill and mastery in art by recreating what have been created by the greats from the past. However, Rubens both is for and against the argument of imitation and copying of antique statues and works because artists who have mastered the skill can truly understand and learn from the work before them. Unskilled artists will create work that is both pernicious and disrespectful to the art. Rubens explain his reasoning from the passage in the article "difference of shades; where the flesh, skin, and cartilages, by their diaphanous nature, soften, as it were, the harshness of a great many out–lines..." (145). Rubens is stating even when an artist understands the element of shades, and giving the statue the flesh look, they still may not create the perfection as Ancient Greece once did in their statue. He then further states "lights of the statues are extremely different from the natural; for the gloss of the stone, and sharpness of the light...raise the surface above its proper pitch, or, at least, fascinate the eye." • 69. Drift And Mastery Analysis What is the history of "drift" and "mastery" in democratic capitalism during the first half of the twentieth century? The last century has been a struggle in avoiding drift and striving for mastery for American political leaders due partially to the advances of culture and technology in the United States throughout the same time period (Hacker & Pierson, 2010). Manufacturing, television, advances in military weaponry and the progressing inclusive tendencies of a developing American culture proved difficult for politicians to manage because they were all very new challenges for the global community as a whole. It was these challenges that distinguished two major political mechanisms: drift and mastery (Lappman, 1914). Drift is described as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lippmann thought that "scientific spirit is the discipline of democracy" and believed that society would "have to substitute purpose for tradition" in order to progress (Lippmann, 1914). Political scientist Chris Hedges states that rebellion is the result of "environmental destruction and wealth polarization," which results from drift policy related inequalities that cause problems in society (Hedges, 2015). Hedges' views align with that of Lippmann on the importance of the utilization of reason over the temptation of the monetary promises usually involved in creating drift policies that favor a minority of Americans and causes them harm. This perspective is also central to Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson, authors of Winner–Take–All Politics How Washington Made the Rich Richer–And Turned Its Back on the Middle Class. They state that events like The Great Depression reveal the failure of the "philosophy that said that the market, left alone, would right itself" (Hacker & Pierson, 2010). • 73. Determining Mastery For Instructional Strategies Determining Mastery for Instructional Strategies Determining mastery can be a complex procedure even for the most experienced educators. It involves not only a designated percentage on assessments, but also must take into account the cognitive complexity of the assessment as well as the nature of the learning goal students are being asked to master. This further requires consideration for "the rigor of expectations set for students' performance" (Guskey, 2001). An assessment can contain items or tasks that are so challenging that even students who receive a low "cutoff" score can be deemed as having achieved mastery. For example, think about the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). Though a student may only answer half of the test questions for the GRE physics exam correctly, due to the complexity of the questions, they will have performed better than over 70 percent of those who take the test. Another factor in determining mastery is professional judgement. Like it or not, scores on assessments aren't always completely accurate and some level of professional judgement is required to adjust scores for error, for example, slightly lowering the score out of concern for false rejection–or incorrectly "classifying a master as a non–master" (Guskey & Andermann, 2014). This false rejection could be detrimental for borderline students in that it would affect their confidence and their desire to continue pursuing mastery as well as causing otherwise talented students not to pass a ... When Buck first arrived at the Klondike, he immediately became enemies with Spitz, another sled dog. At some point, Buck killed Spitz. Most of you know me and for the ones who do not, I am Mabel Dodge. I am the daughter from a family in Buffalo and had what was considered the best education for girls in the nineteenth– century. Instead of going to college, I got married, became a mother and soon, a widow. Later, I traveled abroad and soon married a Boston architect, Edwin Dodge who I later realized the passion I had was no more– so I divorced him. I became bored and began to crave art, the beauty and inspiration!
