CHAPTER I The Problem This chapter discusses the background, objectives, significance of the study, scope and limitations, data gathering process
and the research design and methodology. 1.1 Background and Rationale of the Study
Airsoft is one of the newest and fastest growing sport in the Philippines. It is somewhat similar to paintball in that your primary goal is to shoot your
opponent with an air–powered weapon but that is where the similarities end. Most paintballers play in small field with brightly colored flashy uniforms.
Airsofter's on the other hand prefer MilSim (Military Simulation).

When it comes to the guns themselves in airsoft, there are three styles of systems they use to fire the BB pellets. You have electric powered gun, or
AEG's (automatic electric guns). This is most popular type of airsoft gun.
Airsoft entails not only shooting skills, but also physical strength and mental ability for you to achieve efficiently all the objectives set in every game.
May the best team win," said Team SCAR president Jeson L. Guardo.
As people nowadays are drawn into outdoor sports, this study introduces new exciting activities to try on in the city. This study aids the need of the
airsoft enthusiast for a proper gaming area with additional courses related to the battle field games for a more realistic and adrenalin–rush game.
Airsoft Adventure Park offers airsoft plus high–and–low courses to enjoy – for bonding, personal development and team–building purposes.
1.2 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to determine the viability and profitability of an airsoft adventure part in Conel, General Santos City. Specifically,
the study aims to: 1. Determine the profile of the key players in the airsoft adventure park industry 2. Determine the viability and profitability of
establishing an airsoft adventure park in Conel, General Santos City considering the following aspects: 3.1.1 Management operation 3.1.2 Technical
3.1.3 Financial

Exploring The Exotification Of East Asian Women
In this essay, I will be exploring the exotification of East Asian women in modern day society. My area of investigation in this writing is how these
tropes pose danger towards East Asian women, instead of the misconception that they feel 'flattered' and sees it as a 'compliment'.
Orientalism is, according to Oxford English Dictionary, a term defined as 'styles, artefacts or traits considered as the characteristics of the people and
cultures in Asia'. It is also defined as the representation of Asia in a stereotyped way that is regarded as embodying a colonialist attitude1. According to
Edward Said, Orientalism exists in when the creation of representation of exotic lands does not imbue aspects of the society to be portrayed2.
Orientalism became prominent since the 18th century, when Western colonialists began their domination in Asia. It is during the rise of colonialism in
the 18th century when many Westerners fetishized the East. The generalization of the culture separates them as the East and the West, making East the
'Other'3. Otherness, resulted from Orientalism, have painted East Asian women as so foreign that from mid 1800 brothels until this day, racist humour
about how the vaginas of East Asian women would defy all odds and look different in comparison. People often not realize the harm done to East Asian
Women when calling them 'exotic' and 'oriental', instead thought these are 'compliments' and they should feel flattered. In my writing, I want to expose

Positive Effects Of Marawi War
Effect of Marawi War in Philippine economy
Marawi was also known as the "Philippine's premiere Islamic City". It is the largest city of Lanao del Sur. It is all its capital on the island of
Mindanao in the Philippines. It was founded by Dansalan group in 1639 by the Spaniards led by Francisco Atienza, their true reasons of going to
Marawi is to conquer the entire Lake Lanao area. Recently the battle in Marawi started on May 23, 2017 they called themselves a Maute Group and the
CNN Philippines had estimated that the militants have about 500 men. After that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte came out and declared Martial
Law in the area.
We all know that Marawi war made all things in the Philippines conflicted, if not all but some of them are not in a right condition. It has the impact on
the business; some of the investors changed their mind in investing into their company because of Marawi crisis. According to Mindanao Business
Chair Vicente T. Lao, "the ongoing fighting in Marawin City between the government soldiers and the Maute Group that has already spanned more
than a month will affect the investors' confidence on on Mindanao". Also Lao has a trust in the government and he thinks that the government will go
in to help victims by giving them relief goods and renovating Marawi.

be as small as possible. The bad effect will be notice in the third quarter as the transportation of goods and services in the whole Mindanao like
Cagayan de Oro (CDO) may be affected. He also added that "there will be a lot of infrastructure projects of the government will be intensified as well

Gay Lingo as a Form of Deviance
GAY LINGO AS A FORM OF INNOVATIVE DEVIANCE
Sociology 101
Dr. Aleli Sevilla
September 8, 2010
I. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM AND HYPOTHESIS
This paper aims to answer the following questions:
1. How did Gay Lingo evolve to become a form of innovative deviance?
2. Does the use of Gay Lingo by the society equate to the acceptance of homosexuals in the Philippines?
The researchers have formulated the following hypotheses as preliminary answers to the questions stated above:
1. Gay Lingo resulted from the sheltered emotions of homosexuals here in the Philippines. Their desire to protect themselves against the discriminating
faces of society brought about the colorful language that it is today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the acceptance and adaption [sic] to something which is not established or proper to one's cultural pattern marks a change brought about
by the exposure of the members to the language different from their own, their opportunity to accept it and the way the language was diffused.
Indeed, swardspeak has a way with the life of the male homosexuals [sic], for reasons important to them that common people may not know, the use
of it can be considered justifiable. But what really is swardspeak? What is it for? What implications does it have on the social environment of male
homosexuals? Only very recently did social scientists investigate the social facade of male homosexuals yet has been very limited to areas related to
behavioral indices.

E-Commerce And Tourism Case Study
1. Statement of Problem E–commerce has played a major role in few continents that the Internet has penetrated. Years before the emergence of
e–commerce, traditional business remained the mode for transactions, which made consumers experience difficulties finding time to check various
stores in search for different brands and products. However, in today's generation, the utilization of e–commerce has conveniently provided consumers
with the possibilities of doing so without the need to step out of their homes at any time of the day. E–commerce, in a matter of few years, has
successfully spread throughout different industries, one of which is tourism. In this developing age of e–commerce, traditional travel agencies are
forced to adapt to this change by exploiting the benefits of e–commerce to satisfy the market's online search for holiday tours. The state of e–commerce
in the Philippines has been slow in comparison to other countries including fellow Southeast Asian countries. Ranking only 89th out of 132 countries in

used by these businesses to improve their operations while also discovering new business prospects (Yang, n.d.). Many studies have shown that service

Security Sector Reform
SECURITY SECTOR REFORM Before I proceed, please allow me to give a sincere opinion on Lt Gen Gaudencio S. Pangilinan AFP (Ret)
regarding his lecture on Security Sector Reform. These are what I think that makes Gen Pangilinan a good lecturer/speaker. He is a subject matter
expert, knows the subject well, and can expand beyond basic concepts readily found in books. He communicates well and is very dedicated in what he
is doing.
Nothing new about Security Sector Reform (SSR) as we all know that SSR is a concept that was first developed in the 1990s in Eastern Europe. Since it
has no fixed definition and no single model of a security sector exists, SSR generally refers to a process to reform or rebuild a state's security sector. In

In those settings, making people feel safe and secure and (re)–building confidence between the State and its people is vital for sustainable peace and
development. In different contexts, from Gen Pangilinan's lecture, I was informed that SSR can even prevent conflicts or crises from emerging or
resurging and it is also a process that many States undertake on a regular basis to respond to emerging threats or potential internal or external pressures.
To conclude, the Philippines has yet to show its true colors but the time will come for the Philippines to rise as a key player regionally and
internationally, provided these challenges have been addressed and resolved. For example, the lack of transparency in the security sector. Until today,
the Philippines does not have a published national security white paper to inform the public of the government security policy and predicaments.
Thus, with regards to the above matter, I have a few recommendations to overcome these challenges, because the Philippines is facing internal armed
challenges affecting the good governance of the security sector, the government has to address the structural causes of internal armed conflicts,
insurgency, terrorism and political unrests. Therefore, comprehensive structural reforms are imperative for SSR. Structural reforms

The Filippino Street Children
The Filippino Street Children: A Constructivist and Behavioral Analysis Introduction: Right now there are millions of children all over the world
running around playing games of tag, engrossing themselves in intense video games, or using their time to bury their noses in a book. Very few of
these children, and their parents for that matter, realize just how privileged they are to live in communities here these activities are available and
acceptable. In some areas of the world the children live amongst the garbage, have never seen a video game, and struggle to make enough money for
survival. The problems lead to physical, sexual and substance abuse, criminal activity and homelessness. The Philippines is one of these places. The
issues related to street children are some of the largest struggles of the Philippines; about 1.5 million adolescences survive on handouts and trash
(Cullen, 2005). They are often subject to violence from parents as well as public officials. Frequently they come caught up in drug abuse and sales,
prostitution, and other illegal activities in an attempt to survive their conditions. Nutrition is a foreign concept as the children struggle to find food of
any type and in any condition. The nature and complexity of these struggles are key components to understanding how these atrocities can be abated.
From plentiful research comes a clearer understanding of the situation, followed by an exploration of key points and finally a proposal for furthering

The Culture Of The Philippines
The Culture of the Philippines The Republic of the Philippines was named to honor King Philip the second of Spain in 1543. The purpose of this
paper is to have a complete understanding of the different type culture from every country which is beneficial in knowing how much we all share or
have in common as far as "race, national origin, gender, class, or religion." (Axner) When military leaders examine the culture of the country they are
in, there are six major characteristics that they must take into consideration: 1) one must comprehend the meaning of culture; 2) identify what the five
characteristics are that define a culture; 3) describing the common culture characteristic of a region of the world; 4) the country's physical geography;
5) any previous involvements in military conflicts; and 6). All six of these characteristics play an important role in determining what the norms are
and why the people in that specific region are the way they are. The focus of this paper will center on the cultural understanding and awareness of the
country known as the Philippines. When looking for a definite answer as to the meaning of culture, there are a large number of definitions that follow
it. Culture is defined as "a way of life of a group of people; the beliefs behaviors, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about
them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next." (University) These factors

Case Study Of Philippine Airlines

INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study The airline industry in the Philippines started in 1941 when the Philippine Airlines was founded. PAL then operated as a
monopoly in domestic travel. Then other airline companies emerged in the industry (Reference: PAL History, PAL Website). The
airline industry is very
dynamic. It changes from time to time. An airline company closes and another one opens. The changes are very drastic making it very interesting to
study about. One thing that proves this fast changing pace is that PAL used to be the largest airline company in Asia. And currently, it is not doing
well on its finances forcing them to lay off employees and downsize the company (Reference: Philippine Airlines Income Forces Cost Cuts ... Show

With past conflicts with the Spanish and Asian countries, it is apparent that the Filipinos have picked up a number of their tendencies along with their
culture. The weather of the Philippines has had a substantial effect on population, agriculture, smuggling, and insurgency. With an average of
seventy–four degrees Fahrenheit year round; mean summer the highs stay around one–hundred degrees with the winters only dropping forty–eight
degrees Fahrenheit. The Philippines had a population growth rate of 1.51% in 2017, which is one of the highest in the Asian countries. The weather
has also helped with agriculture. With its main agricultural crops, rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane, bananas, pineapple, coffee, mangoes, tobacco, and
abaca (which is a banana–like plant), the Philippines thrives with agriculture. Smuggling has always been a huge problem. In 2012, According to the
International Monterey Fund's Direction of Trade Statistics, the value of smuggling reached $19.6 billion. Insurgencies in the Philippines go as far
back as the Spanish rule in the 1800's. Ongoing insurgencies date back to the 1940's with farmers and landlords, government power struggles,
communistic views, and of course religion. The areas, structures, capabilities, organizations, people, and events I will cover are significant to military
counterinsurgency operations. The areas and structures most significant to insurgency, in my opinion, would be Manila and the surrounding cities due to

The South China Se Separating Fact From Fiction
The South China Sea: Separating Fact From Fiction
By Mark J. Valencia
THE South China Sea conundrum has risen to the pinnacle of regional security priorities. It has generated a veritable fountain of government
pronouncements, propaganda, and biased analyses. Some of these conflate information with misinformation. It is time to separate fact from fiction. 1.
"THE US pivot or rebalance to Asia is enhancing security and stability in the region."
That is certainly the stated intent. But the U.S. strengthening of its military and political relations with its allies and others in the region has altered the
strategic environment. China is convinced that the U.S. is trying to draw ASEAN or some of its members together with Australia, Japan and South
Korea into a soft alliance to constrain if not contain it. China alleges that tacit US support has emboldened the Philippines and Vietnam to challenge
China's claims and actions. Whether correct or not, the contrasting perceptions have enhanced rivalry and tension in the region. There is an honest
difference of opinion regarding who is reacting to whom and who has the 'right' or 'duty' to be active there. But there is little doubt that the US pivot
has contributed to instability in the region.
2. "China's assertiveness regarding its maritime claims has created instability."
In other claimants' eyes, China has violated the 2002 ASEAN–China Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea.

India does have major health care hurdles. The biggest issues that affect healthcare in India stem from poverty and sanitation. Multiple complications

Philippine Airlines Swot Analysis
Brief background of Philippine Airlines
> Founded in 1941 and based in Pasay City, The Philippine Airlines is the country's ultimate flag carrier and oldest airlines. The monopolization of the
airline occurred in 1995 when Lucio Tan, an affluent Chinese–Filipino businessman purchased the airline and became its chairman and CEO.
. Global competition in the industry
> Threat to new entrants:
In spite of the low switching costs and the absence of proprietary goods and services, generally speaking, there is a low threat to new entrants in the
airline industry. The huge amount of capital make reprisals against new entrants through a price drop. This is evident among existing companies.

The complexity of airplanes magnify competition and high fixed costs yield difficulty in forsaking the industry. Nonetheless, brand differentiation of
various airlines de–escalate competition. Service differentiation, for instance, is the Philippine Airline's trademark. Allowances for excess baggage and
the hospitality of flight attendants are a reflection of the Filipino culture. The intensity of price competition is indisputable among domestic airlines
such as Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific. The air promos and red eye flights of Cebu Pacific appeal to budget conscious passengers.
. POLITICAL & LEGAL
> The Establishment, Operation, Maintenance and Franchise of the Philippine Airlines is reflected on Presidential Decree No. 1590, which has been
established under the regime of the former president Ferdinand Marcos. The provision of similar laws and rights for airline passengers have been
constituted three years ago. The Air Passenger Bill of Rights is a product of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of
Transportation and Communication's collaboration. One of the ultimate goals of the Philippine government is to have a tourism boost of 10% by next

Analysis Of The Poem ' The Worst Goodbye '
The Worst Goodbye
My eyes has never been the puffiest. I was sobbing, like a child, the night before my childhood best friend, Myka, leaves for college in the Philippines.
She will not be coming back after she finishes college and so, family and friends gathered at the airport to say all our goodbyes. My friends and I gave
her a book containing all the memories we've experienced together since we were children. We were drowning in tears because we were all going our
separate ways. I tried to make people stop crying by being positive and cracking up jokes, yet I was the one bawling harder than anyone. My crying
face is the most hideous, monstrous feature that I'm proud of because it made people's stomach hurt from all the laughing.
An hour before Myka departs, I received a call from my other friend, Angelica, who was leaving at the same time as Myka, but at different airlines.
"I'm leaving today and can you please see me before I fly off?" Angelica begged. We had a close relationship since intermediate school. Angelica was
going to American Airlines while Myka was going to Philippine Airlines. Myka wanted everyone to see her fly off, however, because Angelica wanted
me to see her, as well, I asked Myka if I could go and see her for a while. She hesitated, then replied "Be here by 10:10
a.m. I'm leaving at 10:30". By the time I left, it was 9:45 a.m.
I ran, like the speed of lightning, to find Angelica. I don't go to the airport as often so, I didn't know where the stations

"There is no turning back. It's not just policymakers agreeing on pie–in–the–sky issues; there is a real demand in the business community to get it right."
Since the region's ninth summit in 2003, when the concept of an ASEAN Community was first endorsed, GDP has risen from $722 billion to $1.8
trillion in 2010, while GDP per capita more than doubled to $3,100. Trade also rose twofold to $2.1 trillion, one quarter of which is intra–ASEAN
trade. Over the same period, China leapfrogged the US and Japan to become ASEAN's largest trading partner, accounting for $232 billion in imports
and exports in 2010, or 11.3% of the region's total.
Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows rose from $24.5 billion in 2003 to $76.2 billion in 2010. Intra–ASEAN capital flows have increased more
than fourfold, accounting for 16.1% of the regional total in 2010 compared to 11.1% seven years ago. Only the EU contributes more.
It is a matter of debate as to who has benefited most from these developments. "We have seen multinationals take advantage of the FTA, but the
problem is small– and medium–sized enterprises (SMEs) don't have the manpower and resources to do the same," says Sanchita Basu Das, lead

In the past decades, the Indonesian banking system has experienced significant changes. The economic crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997–1998 has
resulted in a deteriorate bank performance and the banking system nearly collapsed. The economy declined by 13% in 1998 and the country had to
take a 43 billion USD bailout fund by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as its currency weakened, companies could not pay their loans and at
least 80 banks failed or were nationalized (Setiaji and Chen, 2012). The government and Indonesian Central Bank (Bank Indonesia) implemented

While the global economic condition is still recovering from crisis, many argue that the process is uneven and susceptible to shock (Bank Indonesia,
2015). The recovery process tends to slow down as there is weakened commodity prices and foreign investment, and these factors are inevitably
affecting the growth rate of Indonesia. GDP growth is falling from 6.3% in 2007 to a forecasted growth rate of 5.5% in 2015 (Asian Development
Bank, 2015). In this case, as a financial intermediary, banks have a strategic role in supporting the national economic growth. It is believed that efficient
banking system is essential for the country development. Therefore, a study looking at the efficiency and profitability of Indonesian banks is
substantial as it will signal the growth of the Indonesian economy in the future.
According to Bloomberg, the lenders in Indonesia have the most profits among the top 20 economies in the world (Vallikappen and Moestafa, 2013).
The data shows that Indonesian banks have higher profitability than other Southeast Asian (ASEAN) countries due to high demand for credit. It can be
seen that banks in Indonesia tend to have high net interest margin (NIM), which demonstrates the ability of traditional bank activities to generate
interest–based income. From 2000 to 2009, average banks in Indonesia had the highest NIM of 5.29% compare to other ASEAN countries, including

Travel And Tourism In The Philippines
It was on September 21, 1972 when President Ferdinand E. Marcos placed the Philippines under Martial Law. The President claimed that 'lawless
elements' supported by a foreign power were plotting to overthrow the lawfully elected government and that martial law was necessary to save the
Republic and reform the society (Lim). On the other hand, tourism is defined as the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their
usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure business and other purposes (Cruz 1). The term travel and tourism industry has
come to mean all the private, public and voluntary sector organizations that provide services for the traveling public and work together to promote the
socio–economic benefits of the industry worldwide (Cruz 9). In this industry, companies and government conduct businesses since it became an
emerging industry in 1970s. Tourism industry is a rising trade during Marcos time since there is an increase in the number of tourist arrivals
starting from 1970 up to 1980. From 242, 811 in 1973, it increased to 1,008,158 in 1980. However, it can also be observed that there was a negative
growth rate from 1981 until 1986. The rise of travel and tourism in the Philippines during Martial law were caused by several actions of government.
Department of Tourism was built in 1973 and it was in–charge in the marketing and promotions of the country's destinations to international market.

The Cause of the Asian Financial Crisis
This is a review of the political reasons that caused the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997. The review is made on 5 papers by 5 authors on the subject.
Introduction
The Asian Crisis of 1997 and 1998 affected many of the East Asian and South East Asian countries surprised many. This was due to the fact that in the
early and mid–1990s these same countries were lauded as model economies with high Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Yet within a space of a few
months in mid–1997, the currency crisis become a financial/economic crisis as many of these countries currencies were greatly devalued resulting in
the contraction of their economies. However, the severity of the Asian Crisis was not uniformly felt.

Due to this, "their states were 'strong' for their struggle to industrialize but 'weak' because of the web of enmeshment; they are semi–sovereign states"
(Cummings, 1999).
The end of the cold war meant that America no longer had to rely so much on Japan and Korea to safe guard against the advancement of communist in
South East Asia. Therefore from early 1990s, America has pushed for these countries to adopt multilateral economies (i.e. be more open to accept
American goods and investment). However, Japan and Korea were resistant to this new form of economic policy.
Though no actual action by American was provided in the paper that resulted in the Asian Crisis, the author does state that the crisis allowed America,
through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to implement their economic model to Korea. This was done to maintain American's hegemony in
Asia, which before the crisis may have shifted to Japan. That is one of the reasons provided by the author on why America was firm in its refusal to
allow the 'Asian Fund' proposed by Japan to materialise.

Waking Up Of The Philippines
Christian Rios Professor Tannie Shannon English 1301.41 28 October 2014 Waking Up in the Philippines I finally realized what I was seeing. I was
in some impoverished hellhole surrounded by withered mothers with naked children in their arms and flies on their faces. Their feet were blackened
with cigarette ashes and dirt, and they reeked of month–old garbage and perspiration. When I first saw them, I was disgusted–not at them, but at the
fact that they had to live like that. I went downstairs to get a closer look, and immediately, I was approached by a scrawny eight–year–old with
emaciated arms and legs and a bloated stomach. Though scrupulously clean, he was dressed in an odd assortment of worn and mismatched clothing. In

The summer heat pushed me with great force, and blasts of hot air burned my face. A single drop of sweat trickled down my back, leaving a
cooling feeling as it made its way down. I tried fanning myself to cool off, but I continued to swelter from the humidity. "You will get used to it"
said Rameel, who was my chauffeur and city guide. He picked me up from the airport in his broken down Toyota Carolla and took me to my hotel.
Rameel was a shabby middle–aged man, with a strong filipino accent. I understood what he was saying fifty percent of the time, but the other fifty
percent was him making unintelligible noises. We drove through the poverty–stricken city, and what I thought were colorful piles of trash, were
actually mounds of makeshift houses that were made out of boxes and umbrellas. I looked closer, and I could see the destitute families, outcasted by
society, finding refuge in these piles of trash. The vehicles on the road, which consisted of mostly knock–off brands of major car manufactures and
tricycles, were lined nose to tail right down the busy street. Exhaust fumes belched, and car horns blared. The highway became a giant parking lot. As
we sat in the car, we were approached by a half–naked child, who looked like he just got out of a fight. His hair was standing up in every direction
possible, and his clothes looked like they were washed in a puddle of mud. He violently banged the window of the passenger seat and proceeded to

The South China Sea Essay
Since the 3rd Century AD, the South China Sea has been home to countless territorial disputes between China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other East
Asian Nations. This region is so contentious because it is one of the busiest trade routes, and is home to vast natural resources. Because of the long and
dense history of them, these disputes are some of the most difficult events to understand and interpret in international relations. Because the disputes
deal with relative power, and the security dilemma, looking at the events through a realist lens is the most practical way of analyzing them.
Although there have been small disputes dating back to the 3rd Century, conflict in the South China Sea really started to heat up in the early 1900's. In
the 19th Century, France had been heavily involved in the South China Sea because they had colonized French Indochina (present day Vietnam).
However France was more concerned about control of the Gulf of Tonkin than the entire South China Sea. The early disputes were primarily over the
Paracel Islands, a group of islands somewhat in between China and Vietnam. In 1902 (Serverino, 2010, p.76), China ordered the first official
exploration of the islands preemptively because they were worried the the French might try to claim the islands as part of Indochina's territory. Then in
the 1920's, both Japan and France claimed to own the Paracel 's. It was around this time that China said the Paracel's were the southernmost part of its
territory.

The First Challenge For Australian Foreign Policy
The first challenge for Australian foreign policy is to maximize the economic and security opportunities by maintaining their relationship with
Indonesia and ASEAN. In the case with Indonesia, Indonesia is one of Australia's closest friends as the two countries share strong security and
economic system. In terms of politics, Indonesia is essential to Australia because Indonesia plays a key role in the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations so a steady relationship with Indonesia is required for a cohesive and productive relationship with ASEAN. Moreover, Indonesia is the most
important country in Southeast Asia with one of the most powerful military forces in the region. Therefore, Indonesia already controls and wants to
improve its effect over ASEAN. According to researches, Indonesian motives for improving its role as regional peacekeeper have been revealed in
recent perspectives by the general of the Indonesia's military, who stated, Indonesian motives of playing a 'big brother' role with the respect to security
in ASEAN and in the region (Tiernan, 2007).
Meanwhile, Australia has recognized the significance of ASEAN in assuring Australia's foreign regional and domestic security. There are certain
institutions such as the East Asia Summit and ASEAN Regional Forum (Harvey, 2015). In recent years, Australia has worked robustly with the EAS to
ensure its security and interests are protected. In return, the EAS has not only supported in regional security but it also has

The World 's Fair An Attempt By The United States Government
Introduction
In 1904, millions of people visited the Philippine Exhibit at the St. Louis World's Fair, observing the displays of native Filipinos and leaving with an
impression of savagery. However, this impression was hardly incidental. To what extent was the 1904 World's Fair an attempt by theUnited States
government to justify its imperialist involvement in the Philippines? This fair was carefully engineered by the United States government to impart an
uncivilized impression of Filipinos onto American fairgoers, thereby justifying the need for US involvement. This commission was a committee
ordained by the US government to govern the newly acquired Philippine islands. This portion of the fair would likely not be present if the United ...

By depicting the Filipinos as savages, the Commission hoped to prove that the Filipinos were no longer resisting American control and that the US
government would benevolently assimilate and civilize the Filipinos. Additionally, the Commission also hoped to attract American capital and
enterprise by displaying the products of its fertile lands and the abundant undeveloped mineral and timber resources. This essay will investigate the
imperialist motivation behind and methods used in depicting the Filipinos as savages in need of civilization. It will also analyze the fair as a means to
promote American investment the Philippines' natural resources.
The Spanish–American War
The motives behind the conception of the 1904 exhibition are rooted in the United States' diplomacy around and during the Spanish–American War in
1898. In the preceding decade, the United States continually attempted to exert its influence over Spanish–controlled Cuba. Although Spain had
political control over Cuba, the United States had long been interested in annexing Cuba. This interest was initially sparked by commerce. By 1820,
trade between the U.S. and Cuba had become so prevalent that many American politicians expected Cuba to become a part of the Union or an
appendage to it. However, the rise of Cuban nationalism became an obstacle, as in 1898, Cuban revolutionaries began a three–year revolt against the
Spanish colonial government. This threatened the United States' economic ties with Cuba. In

The Dispute Between China And The Philippines Essay
The Dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea The territorial and maritime disputes over the South China Sea (SCS) have
been ongoing for decades. The disputes have been considered to be one the fiercest–contested in Asia. The South China Sea is an enclosed sea
surrounded by several different states. China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, and Malaysia all surrounded theSouth China Sea. The main
cause of tension in this dispute is because China claims to have "historical sovereignty" over all of the South China Sea. Associations of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN) have come up with different discussions and suggestions on how to end the disputes with favorable conditions for all
contending states. They use the principles of the United Nation Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and form the Declaration on the Conduct
of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). The states surrounding the South China Sea possess 12 nautical miles territorial sea and 200 nautical miles
exclusive economic zones (EEZs). Thus, the South China Sea is not only international waters, instead, it is also overlapping exclusive economic zones.
According to UNCLOS, disputes over exclusive economic zones must be resolved through negotiations by the contending states. Many of these
contending Southeast Asian states have negotiated their maritime boundaries, however, China fails to comply. China claims that it owns all of the
South China Sea, and therefore, has no need to

Where Did Entrepreneurship Start?
Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is a complex term that's often defined simply as running your own business (Post, 2017). It is also the activity of setting up a
business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. Today, entrepreneurs are romanticized as being the cornerstones of a successful
capitalist economy. But where did the entrepreneurship begin? Who were the first entrepreneurs? The first known trading between humans took place
in New Guinea around 17,000 BCE, where locals would exchange obsidian (a volcanic glass prized for its use in hunting tools) for other needed
goods – like tools, skins, and food. This early type of entrepreneurship continued for millennia. Hunter–gatherer tribes would trade goods from ... Show

fast rate, it is time to look at its advantages and disadvantages. Let's start first with the advantages; First, it gives a great amount of freedom. When you
have your own business, you will be able to make your own demands and set your own schedule, you dictate everything you do. Second, it can be
exciting. When you have your own business, every day will be fun, enjoyable and filled with determination and skills. Third, it allows you to set

an employee for a certain company. Fourth, it offers flexibility. When you own a business you schedule your work and be able to have a quality time
with your family. On the other hand, the disadvantages are; First, it dictates you a huge amount of time. Entrepreneurship is not easy, and for it to be
successful, you have to take a level of time commitment that many people are just not willing to make. Second, it can be difficult to compete with
other business. When you own a business, your business must be different in order to be profitable, and to have a solid customer base. Third, it does
not guarantee 100%. Fourth, it comes with unpredictable schedule. Being an entrepreneur requires more amount of time and effort than being an

How the Philippine Gov. Measure Its Gdp and Gnp
GDP and GNP as economic indicators
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross National Product (GNP) are key figures in accessing the status of a country's economy. These numbers are
also used to gauge the competency of the administration in steering the economic wheels of the country.
By definition:
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total market value of a country's output. It is the market value of all final goods and services produced within a
given period of time by factors of production within a country.
Gross National Product (GNP) is the total market value of all final goods and services produced within a given period by factors of production owned
by a country's citizens, regardless of where the output is produced.

The South China Sea
The South China Sea (S.C.S.) is one of the most politically tense and economically important areas in the world today. Every year, $5.3 trillion of
trade passes through the S.C.S $1.2 trillion of which belongs to the US. The importance of the S.C.S. has led to increasingly strained tension as
competing territorial claims have sharpened over recent years. Tensions have developed over the PRC's vague claim to the majority of the S.C.S. The
so called "nine–dash line" was originally laid down by the Republic of China in 1947 as an eleven–dash line has been the source of conflict in
Southeast Asia for some years. In 1974 the PRC seized part of the Paracels from South Vietnam, and in 1988 China and Vietnam had a bloody clash

The US, the regions historic de facto power, has a vital interest in maintain stability, specifically in regards to the freedom of navigation and free
trade. Though each major actor has its own goals and agenda, the US has the most potential to ease tensions and establish a new regional dynamic
that encourages a unified ASEAN and responsible PRC. Within the PRC there is a strong sentiment that now is China's time to take its place as a
major actor in a new multipolar world. This is a key aspect of Xi Jinping's "China Dream" and a growing pillar of party legitimacy as the Chinese
economy slows and matures. A key aspect for China to be perceived as a hub of power is to have the ability to assert its interest in the region. As
such, Chinese policy towards the S.C.S has been described as developing a "sphere of influence" similar to the US in the Caribbean during the 19th and
20th century. The South East Asian region would be economically interconnected through Chinese investment and development, creating demand for
Chinese goods and services. Politically, smaller states would have the PRC as an advocate and China would insulate itself with friendly neighbors. In
an effort to project its growing role in the South–East Asia the PRC has adopted a renewed and more provocative approach to regional politics with
more assertive stances on various disputed areas, including the nine dash line. By claiming the vast majority of the S.C.S., or the land features in it,

Asian South East Asia Nation Or Better Known As Asean
1.1 What is ASEAN?
Today, there are many countries that establish organisations among themselves in order to protect their interest and gain benefits. One of the best
examples of organisation form by nations would be the European Union (EU). It is an organisation that was formed by several European nations in
order to attain economic stability, avoid conflicts as well as for political coalition. Another would be the Asian SouthEast Asia Nation or better known
as ASEAN. ASEAN is an organization that represents most of the countries that is located in the South East Asian region. It started as the Association of
Southeast Asia (ASA) in 1961 by Malaysia (known as Malaya before 1963), Philippines and Thailand. It became ASEAN in 1967 after Malaysia,
Thailand, Singapore, Philippines and Indonesia signed the ASEAN Declaration. At first, it was formed as an act of prevention from any communist led
insurgency and serve as "serve as a security community, promoting social and political stability during a turbulent time in the region" as according to
Sheila Smith, former Council of Foreign Relations officer (Bennett, Ginsberg, Xu). As time grows however, ASEAN becomes more important to the
region and now, it consists of 10 nation state members from the South East Asia region.
ASEAN cannot be understood as a normal international organisation. In fact, there are many definitions that can be given about ASEAN to begin with.

It is important that an American trying to do business in Saudi Arabia understand the hierarchy so they don't offend anybody. Uncertainty Avoidance
describes "a society's comfort with uncertainty" (Ball 100). The Saudi Arabian culture prefers to avoid uncertainty, meaning they feel the "need" to
have strict laws and rules, and expect to have clear procedures to maintain the status quo. (Ball 100). An American trying to do business in Saudi
Arabia will need to remember that change is not welcomed so innovation may be resisted (The Hofstede Center). Masculinity–femininity dimension
describes the gap between the roles of men and women in the culture (Ball 100). Saudi Arabia is a masculine society meaning that both men are
typically more assertive and competitive. Although there aren't as many women working in Saudi Arabia, the women that do work are considered to be
assertive and competitive, just like their male counterparts. An American would need to keep this in mind in regards to management because the
culture expects management to be decisive and assertive (The Hofstede Center). Long–term orientation/Confucian dynamism is explained as the "level
to which people in the culture will persevere to overcome obstacles they cannot overcome with will or strength" (Ball 101). The culture of Saudi
Arabia a short–term–oriented society. This means that they

Spanish American War : The United States Essay
SPANISH–AMERICAN WAR
By the end of the nineteenth century the United States had transformed from an agrarian nation into a leading industrial power. Continued recessions,
including the Panic of 1893, convinced some influential Americans to believe that the key to avoiding future economic contractions lay in acquiring
overseas markets. The problem facing the United States, however, was a lack of available real estate. Between 1865 and 1900 leading European
empires had also expanded their territorial holdings, especially in Africa and Southeast Asia. Thus, for American imperialists, if the U.S. was to
become a great power and improve its economy, it needed territory. And, the sooner the better.
In 1895 Cuba, ninety miles from the United States, erupted in rebellion against the Spanish Empire. Madrid deployed General Valeriano Weyler to
crush the insurgency. It proved to be a fateful decision because his methods aroused the passions of the American public. U.S. newspapers, typically
referred to as the ?yellow press,? inflamed popular opinion by publishing lurid stories of Spanish depravity, violence and sexual misconduct. In
particular, the press singled out Weyler who was often depicted as the ?butcher.? By 1898 American public opinion agitated for full independence for
Cuba.
In January 1898, President William McKinley ordered the U.S.S. Maine to Havana ostensibly on a courtesy visit but actually as protection for
American citizens. The following month an explosion sent

of independence were crushed when the Philippines were transferred from Spain to the United States in the Treaty of Paris (1898), which closed the
Spanish–American War. In Feb., 1899, Aguinaldo led a new revolt, this time against U.S. rule. Defeated on the battlefield, the Filipinos turned to
guerrilla warfare, and their subjugation became a mammoth project for the United States–one that cost far more money and took far more lives than
the Spanish–American War. The insurrection was effectively ended with the capture (1901) of Aguinaldo by Gen. Frederick Funston, but the question
of Philippine independence remained a burning issue in the politics of both the United States and the islands. The matter was complicated by the
growing economic ties between the two countries. Although comparatively little American capital was invested in island industries, U.S. trade bulked
larger and larger until the Philippines became almost entirely dependent upon the American market. Free trade, established by an act of 1909, was
expanded in 1913. When the Democrats came into power in 1913, measures were taken to effect a smooth transition to self–rule. The Philippine
assembly already had a popularly elected lower house, and the Jones Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 1916, provided for a

The Debate Of The Tech Debate
MP 1.1 Rough Draft
The tech debate seems to never have a victor because there seems to be unending points of view and evidence to support both sides. However, what
seems to be true of those who support technology and its benefits is they each have something different to say about its positivity. Through Morozov
we see the critiques of Carr and how the best way to view technology criticism is to do it in the perspective of the evolution of tech, which gives us a
broader understanding. Through Crystal we see the benefits of technology and how it is far from causing a downfall of the english language. Lastly,
Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist and current Vice President at Intel discusses how technology is a way to spread stories and give us a background
into other people's lives. Although technology has considerably changed multiple aspects of our society, it is not a detrimental piece of humanity, but
rather something that has changed the way humans interact and still further our understanding of each other. By showing the multiple positions of
Morozov, Crystal and a new source by Bell we can see that tech's impact should be viewed through the multiple lenses, one of historical context, one of
varying social/human context and one of its sharing of ideas, all of which show the benefits of tech.
One of the lenses that gives us the most perspective about the technology debate is a historical one. When looking at the tech debate in a historical
context, it seems to be true that

Feasibility

  • 1. Feasibility CHAPTER I The Problem This chapter discusses the background, objectives, significance of the study, scope and limitations, data gathering process and the research design and methodology. 1.1 Background and Rationale of the Study Airsoft is one of the newest and fastest growing sport in the Philippines. It is somewhat similar to paintball in that your primary goal is to shoot your opponent with an air–powered weapon but that is where the similarities end. Most paintballers play in small field with brightly colored flashy uniforms. Airsofter's on the other hand prefer MilSim (Military Simulation). Devised to be an example of combat sports that required relatively little preparation but was capable of entertaining participants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When it comes to the guns themselves in airsoft, there are three styles of systems they use to fire the BB pellets. You have electric powered gun, or AEG's (automatic electric guns). This study aids the need of the airsoft enthusiast for a proper gaming area with additional courses related to the battle field games for a more realistic and adrenalin–rush game. Airsoft Adventure Park offers airsoft plus high–and–low courses to enjoy – for bonding, personal development and team–building purposes. 1.2 Objectives of the Study The main objective of this study is to determine the viability and profitability of an airsoft adventure part in Conel, General Santos City. Specifically, the study aims to: 1. Determine the profile of the key players in the airsoft adventure park industry 2. Determine the viability and profitability of establishing an airsoft adventure park in Conel, General Santos City considering the following aspects: 3.1.1 Management operation 3.1.2 Technical 3.1.3 Financial ... • 2. Exploring The Exotification Of East Asian Women In this essay, I will be exploring the exotification of East Asian women in modern day society. My area of investigation in this writing is how these tropes pose danger towards East Asian women, instead of the misconception that they feel 'flattered' and sees it as a 'compliment'. Orientalism is, according to Oxford English Dictionary, a term defined as 'styles, artefacts or traits considered as the characteristics of the people and cultures in Asia'. It is also defined as the representation of Asia in a stereotyped way that is regarded as embodying a colonialist attitude1. According to Edward Said, Orientalism exists in when the creation of representation of exotic lands does not imbue aspects of the society to be portrayed2. Orientalism became prominent since the 18th century, when Western colonialists began their domination in Asia. It is during the rise of colonialism in the 18th century when many Westerners fetishized the East. The generalization of the culture separates them as the East and the West, making East the 'Other'3. Otherness, resulted from Orientalism, have painted East Asian women as so foreign that from mid 1800 brothels until this day, racist humour about how the vaginas of East Asian women would defy all odds and look different in comparison. People often not realize the harm done to East Asian Women when calling them 'exotic' and 'oriental', instead thought these are 'compliments' and they should feel flattered. In my writing, I want to expose the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Positive Effects Of Marawi War Effect of Marawi War in Philippine economy Marawi was also known as the "Philippine's premiere Islamic City". It is the largest city of Lanao del Sur. It is all its capital on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. It was founded by Dansalan group in 1639 by the Spaniards led by Francisco Atienza, their true reasons of going to Marawi is to conquer the entire Lake Lanao area. Recently the battle in Marawi started on May 23, 2017 they called themselves a Maute Group and the CNN Philippines had estimated that the militants have about 500 men. After that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte came out and declared Martial Law in the area. We all know that Marawi war made all things in the Philippines conflicted, if not all but some of them are not in a right condition. It has the impact on the business; some of the investors changed their mind in investing into their company because of Marawi crisis. According to Mindanao Business Chair Vicente T. Lao, "the ongoing fighting in Marawin City between the government soldiers and the Maute Group that has already spanned more than a month will affect the investors' confidence on on Mindanao". Also Lao has a trust in the government and he thinks that the government will go in to help victims by giving them relief goods and renovating Marawi. Another Impact of Marawi war in ... The bad effect will be notice in the third quarter as the transportation of goods and services in the whole Mindanao like Cagayan de Oro (CDO) may be affected. IDENTIFICATION OF THE PROBLEM AND HYPOTHESIS This paper aims to answer the following questions: 1. How did Gay Lingo evolve to become a form of innovative deviance? 2. Does the use of Gay Lingo by the society equate to the acceptance of homosexuals in the Philippines? The researchers have formulated the following hypotheses as preliminary answers to the questions stated above: 1. Gay Lingo resulted from the sheltered emotions of homosexuals here in the Philippines. Their desire to protect themselves against the discriminating faces of society brought about the colorful language that it is today. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the acceptance and adaption [sic] to something which is not established or proper to one's cultural pattern marks a change brought about by the exposure of the members to the language different from their own, their opportunity to accept it and the way the language was diffused. But what really is swardspeak? What is it for? What implications does it have on the social environment of male homosexuals? Years before the emergence of e–commerce, traditional business remained the mode for transactions, which made consumers experience difficulties finding time to check various stores in search for different brands and products. However, in today's generation, the utilization of e–commerce has conveniently provided consumers with the possibilities of doing so without the need to step out of their homes at any time of the day. E–commerce, in a matter of few years, has successfully spread throughout different industries, one of which is tourism. In this developing age of e–commerce, traditional travel agencies are forced to adapt to this change by exploiting the benefits of e–commerce to satisfy the market's online search for holiday tours. • 7. Security Sector Reform SECURITY SECTOR REFORM Before I proceed, please allow me to give a sincere opinion on Lt Gen Gaudencio S. Pangilinan AFP (Ret) regarding his lecture on Security Sector Reform. These are what I think that makes Gen Pangilinan a good lecturer/speaker. He is a subject matter expert, knows the subject well, and can expand beyond basic concepts readily found in books. He communicates well and is very dedicated in what he is doing. Nothing new about Security Sector Reform (SSR) as we all know that SSR is a concept that was first developed in the 1990s in Eastern Europe. Since it has no fixed definition and no single model of a security sector exists, SSR generally refers to a process to reform or rebuild a state's security sector. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In those settings, making people feel safe and secure and (re)–building confidence between the State and its people is vital for sustainable peace and development. In different contexts, from Gen Pangilinan's lecture, I was informed that SSR can even prevent conflicts or crises from emerging or resurging and it is also a process that many States undertake on a regular basis to respond to emerging threats or potential internal or external pressures. To conclude, the Philippines has yet to show its true colors but the time will come for the Philippines to rise as a key player regionally and internationally, provided these challenges have been addressed and resolved. For example, the lack of transparency in the security sector. Until today, the Philippines does not have a published national security white paper to inform the public of the government security policy and predicaments. Thus, with regards to the above matter, I have a few recommendations to overcome these challenges, because the Philippines is facing internal armed challenges affecting the good governance of the security sector, the government has to address the structural causes of internal armed conflicts, insurgency, terrorism and political unrests. Therefore, comprehensive structural reforms are imperative for SSR. Structural reforms ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Filippino Street Children The Filippino Street Children: A Constructivist and Behavioral Analysis Introduction: Right now there are millions of children all over the world running around playing games of tag, engrossing themselves in intense video games, or using their time to bury their noses in a book. Very few of these children, and their parents for that matter, realize just how privileged they are to live in communities here these activities are available and acceptable. In some areas of the world the children live amongst the garbage, have never seen a video game, and struggle to make enough money for survival. The problems lead to physical, sexual and substance abuse, criminal activity and homelessness. The Philippines is one of these places. The issues related to street children are some of the largest struggles of the Philippines; about 1.5 million adolescences survive on handouts and trash (Cullen, 2005). They are often subject to violence from parents as well as public officials. Frequently they come caught up in drug abuse and sales, prostitution, and other illegal activities in an attempt to survive their conditions. Nutrition is a foreign concept as the children struggle to find food of any type and in any condition. The nature and complexity of these struggles are key components to understanding how these atrocities can be abated. From plentiful research comes a clearer understanding of the situation, followed by an exploration of key points and finally a proposal for furthering ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this paper is to have a complete understanding of the different type culture from every country which is beneficial in knowing how much we all share or have in common as far as "race, national origin, gender, class, or religion." (Axner) When military leaders examine the culture of the country they are in, there are six major characteristics that they must take into consideration: 1) one must comprehend the meaning of culture; 2) identify what the five characteristics are that define a culture; 3) describing the common culture characteristic of a region of the world; 4) the country's physical geography; 5) any previous involvements in military conflicts; and 6). All six of these characteristics play an important role in determining what the norms are and why the people in that specific region are the way they are. The focus of this paper will center on the cultural understanding and awareness of the country known as the Philippines. When looking for a definite answer as to the meaning of culture, there are a large number of definitions that follow it. Culture is defined as "a way of life of a group of people; the beliefs behaviors, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next." It changes from time to time. An airline company closes and another one opens. The changes are very drastic making it very interesting to study about. With past conflicts with the Spanish and Asian countries, it is apparent that the Filipinos have picked up a number of their tendencies along with their culture. The weather of the Philippines has had a substantial effect on population, agriculture, smuggling, and insurgency. With an average of seventy–four degrees Fahrenheit year round; mean summer the highs stay around one–hundred degrees with the winters only dropping forty–eight degrees Fahrenheit. The Philippines had a population growth rate of 1.51% in 2017, which is one of the highest in the Asian countries. The weather has also helped with agriculture. With its main agricultural crops, rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane, bananas, pineapple, coffee, mangoes, tobacco, and abaca (which is a banana–like plant), the Philippines thrives with agriculture. Smuggling has always been a huge problem. In 2012, According to the International Monterey Fund's Direction of Trade Statistics, the value of smuggling reached $19.6 billion. • 12. The South China Se Separating Fact From Fiction The South China Sea: Separating Fact From Fiction By Mark J. Valencia THE South China Sea conundrum has risen to the pinnacle of regional security priorities. It has generated a veritable fountain of government pronouncements, propaganda, and biased analyses. Some of these conflate information with misinformation. It is time to separate fact from fiction. 1. "THE US pivot or rebalance to Asia is enhancing security and stability in the region." That is certainly the stated intent. But the U.S. strengthening of its military and political relations with its allies and others in the region has altered the strategic environment. China is convinced that the U.S. is trying to draw ASEAN or some of its members together with Australia, Japan and South Korea into a soft alliance to constrain if not contain it. China alleges that tacit US support has emboldened the Philippines and Vietnam to challenge China's claims and actions. Whether correct or not, the contrasting perceptions have enhanced rivalry and tension in the region. There is an honest difference of opinion regarding who is reacting to whom and who has the 'right' or 'duty' to be active there. But there is little doubt that the US pivot has contributed to instability in the region. 2. "China's assertiveness regarding its maritime claims has created instability." In other claimants' eyes, China has violated the 2002 ASEAN–China Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. This includes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I was sobbing, like a child, the night before my childhood best friend, Myka, leaves for college in the Philippines. She will not be coming back after she finishes college and so, family and friends gathered at the airport to say all our goodbyes. My friends and I gave her a book containing all the memories we've experienced together since we were children. We were drowning in tears because we were all going our separate ways. I tried to make people stop crying by being positive and cracking up jokes, yet I was the one bawling harder than anyone. My crying face is the most hideous, monstrous feature that I'm proud of because it made people's stomach hurt from all the laughing. An hour before Myka departs, I received a call from my other friend, Angelica, who was leaving at the same time as Myka, but at different airlines. "I'm leaving today and can you please see me before I fly off?" Angelica begged. We had a close relationship since intermediate school. Angelica was going to American Airlines while Myka was going to Philippine Airlines. • 26. The South China Sea Essay Since the 3rd Century AD, the South China Sea has been home to countless territorial disputes between China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other East Asian Nations. This region is so contentious because it is one of the busiest trade routes, and is home to vast natural resources. Because of the long and dense history of them, these disputes are some of the most difficult events to understand and interpret in international relations. Because the disputes deal with relative power, and the security dilemma, looking at the events through a realist lens is the most practical way of analyzing them. Although there have been small disputes dating back to the 3rd Century, conflict in the South China Sea really started to heat up in the early 1900's. In the 19th Century, France had been heavily involved in the South China Sea because they had colonized French Indochina (present day Vietnam). However France was more concerned about control of the Gulf of Tonkin than the entire South China Sea. The early disputes were primarily over the Paracel Islands, a group of islands somewhat in between China and Vietnam. In 1902 (Serverino, 2010, p.76), China ordered the first official exploration of the islands preemptively because they were worried the the French might try to claim the islands as part of Indochina's territory. Then in the 1920's, both Japan and France claimed to own the Paracel 's. It was around this time that China said the Paracel's were the southernmost part of its territory. ... The Spanish–American War The motives behind the conception of the 1904 exhibition are rooted in the United States' diplomacy around and during the Spanish–American War in 1898. In the preceding decade, the United States continually attempted to exert its influence over Spanish–controlled Cuba. Although Spain had political control over Cuba, the United States had long been interested in annexing Cuba. This interest was initially sparked by commerce. The Dispute Between China And The Philippines Essay The Dispute between China and the Philippines over the South China Sea The territorial and maritime disputes over the South China Sea (SCS) have been ongoing for decades. The disputes have been considered to be one the fiercest–contested in Asia. The South China Sea is an enclosed sea surrounded by several different states. China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, and Malaysia all surrounded theSouth China Sea. The main cause of tension in this dispute is because China claims to have "historical sovereignty" over all of the South China Sea. Associations of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have come up with different discussions and suggestions on how to end the disputes with favorable conditions for all contending states. They use the principles of the United Nation Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and form the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). The states surrounding the South China Sea possess 12 nautical miles territorial sea and 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zones (EEZs). • 34. The South China Sea The South China Sea (S.C.S.) is one of the most politically tense and economically important areas in the world today. Every year, $5.3 trillion of trade passes through the S.C.S $1.2 trillion of which belongs to the US. The importance of the S.C.S. has led to increasingly strained tension as competing territorial claims have sharpened over recent years. Tensions have developed over the PRC's vague claim to the majority of the S.C.S. The so called "nine–dash line" was originally laid down by the Republic of China in 1947 as an eleven–dash line has been the source of conflict in Southeast Asia for some years. In 1974 the PRC seized part of the Paracels from South Vietnam, and in 1988 China and Vietnam had a bloody clash over Johnson Reef. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The US, the regions historic de facto power, has a vital interest in maintain stability, specifically in regards to the freedom of navigation and free trade. Though each major actor has its own goals and agenda, the US has the most potential to ease tensions and establish a new regional dynamic that encourages a unified ASEAN and responsible PRC. Within the PRC there is a strong sentiment that now is China's time to take its place as a major actor in a new multipolar world. This is a key aspect of Xi Jinping's "China Dream" and a growing pillar of party legitimacy as the Chinese economy slows and matures. A key aspect for China to be perceived as a hub of power is to have the ability to assert its interest in the region. As such, Chinese policy towards the S.C.S has been described as developing a "sphere of influence" similar to the US in the Caribbean during the 19th and 20th century. The South East Asian region would be economically interconnected through Chinese investment and development, creating demand for Chinese goods and services. Politically, smaller states would have the PRC as an advocate and China would insulate itself with friendly neighbors. In an effort to project its growing role in the South–East Asia the PRC has adopted a renewed and more provocative approach to regional politics with more assertive stances on various disputed areas, including the nine dash line. An explosion during the proclamation rally of the senatorial slate of the opposition Liberal Party in Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila on August 21, 1971, prompted Marcos to suspend the writ of habeas corpus hours after the blast, which he restored on January 11, 1972 after public protests. Martial Law (1972–1981) Using the rising wave of lawlessness and the threat of a Communist insurgency as justification, Marcos declared martial law on September 21, 1972 by virtue of Proclamation No. 1081. Martial Law remained in force until 1981, when Marcos was reelected, in the midst of accusations of electoral fraud. Marcos, ruling by decree, curtailed press freedom and other civil liberties; closed down Congress and media establishments; and ordered the arrest of opposition leaders and militant activists, including his staunchest critics Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. and Senator Jose Diokno. Initially, the declaration of martial law was well received, given the social turmoil the Philippines was experiencing. Crime rates plunged dramatically after a curfew was implemented. Political opponents were given the opportunity to go into exile. But, as martial law dragged on for the next nine years, excesses by the military emerged. It is important that an American trying to do business in Saudi Arabia understand the hierarchy so they don't offend anybody. Uncertainty Avoidance describes "a society's comfort with uncertainty" (Ball 100). The Saudi Arabian culture prefers to avoid uncertainty, meaning they feel the "need" to have strict laws and rules, and expect to have clear procedures to maintain the status quo. (Ball 100). An American trying to do business in Saudi Arabia will need to remember that change is not welcomed so innovation may be resisted (The Hofstede Center). Masculinity–femininity dimension describes the gap between the roles of men and women in the culture (Ball 100). Saudi Arabia is a masculine society meaning that both men are typically more assertive and competitive. Although there aren't as many women working in Saudi Arabia, the women that do work are considered to be assertive and competitive, just like their male counterparts. An American would need to keep this in mind in regards to management because the culture expects management to be decisive and assertive (The Hofstede Center). Long–term orientation/Confucian dynamism is explained as the "level to which people in the culture will persevere to overcome obstacles they cannot overcome with will or strength" (Ball 101). • 39. Spanish American War : The United States Essay SPANISH–AMERICAN WAR By the end of the nineteenth century the United States had transformed from an agrarian nation into a leading industrial power. Continued recessions, including the Panic of 1893, convinced some influential Americans to believe that the key to avoiding future economic contractions lay in acquiring overseas markets. The problem facing the United States, however, was a lack of available real estate. Between 1865 and 1900 leading European empires had also expanded their territorial holdings, especially in Africa and Southeast Asia. Thus, for American imperialists, if the U.S. was to become a great power and improve its economy, it needed territory. And, the sooner the better. In 1895 Cuba, ninety miles from the United States, erupted in rebellion against the Spanish Empire. Madrid deployed General Valeriano Weyler to crush the insurgency. It proved to be a fateful decision because his methods aroused the passions of the American public. U.S. newspapers, typically referred to as the ?yellow press,? inflamed popular opinion by publishing lurid stories of Spanish depravity, violence and sexual misconduct. In particular, the press singled out Weyler who was often depicted as the ?butcher.? By 1898 American public opinion agitated for full independence for Cuba. In January 1898, President William McKinley ordered the U.S.S. Maine to Havana ostensibly on a courtesy visit but actually as protection for American citizens. • 42. Philippine History Philippine History Early History –The Negritos are believed to have migrated to the Philippines some 30,000 years ago from Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaya. The Malayans followed in successive waves. These people belonged to a primitive epoch of Malayan culture, which has apparently survived to this day among certain groups such as the Igorots. The Malayan tribes that came later had more highly developed material cultures. In the 14th cent. Arab traders from Malay and Borneo introduced Islam into the southern islands and extended their influence as far north as Luzon. Their dreams of independence were crushed when the Philippines were transferred from Spain to the United States in the Treaty of Paris (1898), which closed the Spanish–American War. In Feb., 1899, Aguinaldo led a new revolt, this time against U.S. rule. Defeated on the battlefield, the Filipinos turned to guerrilla warfare, and their subjugation became a mammoth project for the United States–one that cost far more money and took far more lives than the Spanish–American War. The insurrection was effectively ended with the capture (1901) of Aguinaldo by Gen. Frederick Funston, but the question of Philippine independence remained a burning issue in the politics of both the United States and the islands. The matter was complicated by the growing economic ties between the two countries. Although comparatively little American capital was invested in island industries, U.S. trade bulked larger and larger until the Philippines became almost entirely dependent upon the American market. Free trade, established by an act of 1909, was expanded in 1913. When the Democrats came into power in 1913, measures were taken to effect a smooth transition to self–rule. • 43. The Debate Of The Tech Debate MP 1.1 Rough Draft The tech debate seems to never have a victor because there seems to be unending points of view and evidence to support both sides. However, what seems to be true of those who support technology and its benefits is they each have something different to say about its positivity. Through Morozov we see the critiques of Carr and how the best way to view technology criticism is to do it in the perspective of the evolution of tech, which gives us a broader understanding. Through Crystal we see the benefits of technology and how it is far from causing a downfall of the english language. Lastly, Genevieve Bell, an anthropologist and current Vice President at Intel discusses how technology is a way to spread stories and give us a background into other people's lives. Although technology has considerably changed multiple aspects of our society, it is not a detrimental piece of humanity, but rather something that has changed the way humans interact and still further our understanding of each other. By showing the multiple positions of Morozov, Crystal and a new source by Bell we can see that tech's impact should be viewed through the multiple lenses, one of historical context, one of varying social/human context and one of its sharing of ideas, all of which show the benefits of tech. One of the lenses that gives us the most perspective about the technology debate is a historical one. When looking at the tech debate in a historical context, it seems to be true that ...
