2. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
The title of my magazine was very appropriate for the genre. MAG
ROCK has a very simple and literal meaning, and is not to long to
remember and not awfully short. The title font is very bold and easy to
read. The style used is not hard to remember, so the magazine is
unlikely to be mistaken for any other. The fact that I used the bold
woodcut font for my title makes the magazine seem quite iconic. My title
completely matches the conventions for a rock magazine with a bold
appealing look. The title alone should draw interest to the magazine
from potential customers.
3. In this section of the magazine I used the location of the
pull quote to my advantage. This presents the model in
a very bold way which will attract more members of my
target audience. The appearance of my model does not
exactly match the expectation of what a rock star should
look like because of the fact that she is a girl. Men are
more typically seen on the front of rock magazines, this
may broaden the female audience of my magazine.
I went for this challenging appearance in a bid to create
curiosity in the minds of my audience which may just
sway them into impulsively paying close attention to the
magazine.
4. This font style has a very classy yet standout appearance which in my
opinion matches the conventions for a magazine of this genre. The
blood red colour of the font really makes the text jump off the page
which is never a bad thing when trying to attract potential readers. The
serif style of the font has a fairly high class sort of look which may
make the magazine appeal to more people, as it well let them know that
they are buying a high class product, this aspect is similar to other
magazines of this genre such as classic rock magazine.
The colour red also connotes warmth. This is a winter edition of mag-
rock and the colour red plays along with the theme of cold weather and
hot music which I have created. As you will see this theme is even more
evident in my contents page.
5. The mise-on-scene in this shot was chosen purposely to
fully introduce the winter edition theme of “cold weather,
hot music” which I created on the front cover. The clothing
of my model is simply practical for the winter. Also the fact
that you see the model in this environment is quite comedic
because of how much it contrasts to the sinister looking
blurred photo on the front cover of my magazine. This again
challenges the expectations for the genre however I think
this element may attract more potential readers to the
magazine.
6. The font style used on my double page spread was
selected just because of the fact that it is easy to read.
When reading a lengthy portion of text readers do not
want to have to struggle. The style of the font also
happens to match the expectations for this genre of
magazine. It has an informal look but still manages to
look tidy. The font style keeps in touch with the high
class look that I was going for with this magazine. I
chose a sans serif font for this page because I felt that
a serif font would contrast to highly with the attitudes
represented by the group.
The legibility of the text is also very important in my
case because of the age of my target audience. Much
of my target audience are older which means that they
will be more likely to have poor eye sight.
7. My double page spread did stick to the
standard conventions of a rock magazine. The
image I used crossed the two pages which
helped link the two pages together and create
a professional looking double page spread.
The colours used are similar to that used on
the front page and contents page. The red font
really stands out very well against the white
screen background. The dress of the band
gives a very casual feel which is more
welcoming to the user. Making the user feel
welcome in reading the magazine is a very
important convention which I had to stick to.
The appearance of band challenges the normal
perception of what you would normally expect
a rock band to look like. The font and style
used should appeal to my audience. The way
in which I used shadows for this image creates
a huge sense of depth which brings the
magazine to life. The font used for the title
represents the attitudes of the group very well
and the “handwriting” style font keeps a
professional high class appearance.
I used pull quotes in the shadow
to draw the reader in. This is
expected on the double page
spreads from most genres.
8. My contents page differs from the general conventions in many ways.
My contents page keeps the cold weather theme that I created on the
front cover. The red font creates a contrast against the white of the
magazine which has a very cold feeling. I decided to use a serif font
to create a more high class look around my music magazine, it will
remind the audience of the magazine the they are buying a high
quality magazine that is worth every penny.
My contents page has a formal appearance similar to the front cover
this formal appearance may help to justify the cost of the magazine
more. This was done intentionally to create the impression that the
contents of the magazine is of high quality. The cold blue title re-
enforces the fact that this is a winter edition of the magazine and
keeps the theme of cold weather and hot music.
Like most other music magazines I made sure that the numbers
stand out clearly and that suitable “pull” words are on my contents
page. These words should help to draw more readers into reading the
magazine.
As with all of my pages I have included page numbers. This is a
convention which cannot be broken.
