4. For my music magazine, I came up with the mast head ‘Spotlight’. I came up with this
idea of mast head by first of all thinking about the genre of my magazine which is a pop
and R&B magazine. My target audience is generally teens and young adult women
between the ages of 16 and 25. this is because the contents of the magazine include a
story about a young rising artist who is new to the music industry. The magazine also
includes contents of free music downloads which are based in the genre of pop and
R&B. these genres are usually generally the genres which young people of around that
age prefer. The magazine also includes a double page spread of the young artist’s
interview where she talks about her influences for her career, and her life about music
so far. for all these reasons, I have it came to my attention that my music magazine is to
be called spotlight since it clearly matches with the stories and the contents included in
the magazine. This is a convention because it shows how customers recognise a brand;
through a clear and visible logo.
Within this media product, the main model/artist within the magazine is named Jayde
Allison. This name unlike other nick names of other artists appeals to audience in a
dignified manner. In other words it shows that the artist is very distinguished and again
dignified. This is as opposed to her identity if she was to be known as for example
‘JayJay’ which would immediately define her as a less of a dignified icon. The age of
this model is 23 years old. Such points are some of the things which audiences look at
within a magazine, and the impression which they get by looking at the magazine front
cover, it is therefore very essential that this is of an acceptable standard for the specific
magazine being sold which can be a helping hand in terms of business marketing and
promotion. Aside from that, this helped me find out the different front covers of
magazines and the names which are presented (on the front cover)and the way they are
presented.
5. The word ‘contents’ in vibe magazine is what I
based my own magazine contents page on. I
found this idea very fascinating and a unique
way of presenting ‘contents.’ I also believed it
to appeal to audience more instead of just
writing it in a straight line just the way most
magazines do it.
I also matched this up with the rest of my
magazine text, particularly headings and the
mast head in order to match and not make
anything look out of place. Again this is all
shown in the image below.
6. COLOUR
I have also used colour in all pages including the front cover, contents page and the double page
spread. This is to make the magazine more appealing. As part of my research from the questionnaire,
the audience believed that the features which make a successful magazine is also to do with colour
for an attractive appearance. I have included a lot of colours which all match with the pages. I
purposely avoided including too bright colours such as yellow or bright orange simply because
these colours would divert the whole appearance of the magazine. Colours grab the attention of the
eye before anything else so it is essential that colour is of the best standard
I chose a dark pink-red colour for my mast head. With the Segoe
script serif font. I chose this particular colour for the mast head to
stand out from the rest of the text. This colour is also the same as the
other cover lines.. I purposely did this for the purpose of matching
and recognition of the cover lines. (which gain matches with the mast
head in terms of colour.) the contents page and the double page
spread also include similar colours for a matching appearance.
Other colours include black and orange for the text under the cover
lines and the headings in the pages included. Images also have
colour as well which matches with the text. These images I intended
them to have a perfect manipulation with a reasonable contrast, hue,
vibrancy, brightness, and texture. This was all for the best results of
the appearance for the music magazine. The texture on the model
matches with the texture of the font which all appear to be very
smooth and appealing.
7. FONT
For my music magazine I used various different types of fonts which included both
serif and san serif. I used a bold sego script for the mast head. This because I intended
this to be very different to the rest of the text for the purpose of a more appealing
appearance. The font size which I used for the mast head is 117. for the cover lines
such as ‘SUMMER 2013 BEACH PARTY’ and ‘EXCLUSIVE’ I used a serif font called
Microsoft New Tai Lue with the same colour as the mast head for a matching
appearance. other fonts include the Lucida Handwriting font which is for the cover line
for the name of the icon, (Jayde Allison) Veranda font for the text ‘How she has made it
this far’ and the times new roman font for the rest of the text under the cover line and
the quote. The tag line at the top is of the font Lucida calligraphy. I chose these font
with a purpose of good appearance for the audience which match with the image and
topics of the magazine. Other fonts in the double page spread and the contents as well
as other features such as the buttons page are also the sego print and Lucida hand
writing.

Lucida Handwriting for the main
topic in the double page spread
Microsoft New Lai Tue font for cover lines
8. Tag Line
The tag line for my music magazine is entitles ‘out with the old and in with the new.’ I
chose this particular tagline since my magazine is a weekly magazine bringing the
newest and hottest topics certain models. ‘Out with the Old’ meaning a change.
Getting rid of the ‘old’ things in the magazine and putting in the newest and hottest
topics ‘in with the New’ including trends. I believe that this tagline links with the
whole magazine since it aims to follow that basic concept. I believe that this tag line is
a very useful way of attracting the audience as they would notice this and believe that
the magazine includes very fractionating topics per issue which is emphasised by the
tag line.
9. Social Group Representation
The magazine is representing social groups by the language used in the text. On my front
cover I used a more formal text. This is to appeal to the audience in a clear way so that they
can get a good first impression. This is also true for the contents page. For the double page
spread (the interview) I used everyday English language which people generally use,
including the questions used which are of a language which is in the style of the way an
everyday ordinary person would ask a question. I used the ellipsis to show a an unfinished
topic in the heading such as in the double page spread for the interview. This is to show that
the topics are further shown in the main text which follows.
The magazine also represents social group by the way the model is posing. She has her
hands touching nearly the back of her head. The make up, and light intensity is used to
emphasise her typical age which id of a young model. this is also shown in the double page
spread image but this time she is applying a different pose, with a smile on her face while
she is biting the necklace. This shows her mood which seems to be very happy because of
her success. She is therefore looking very joyous. I chose these particular images for the
purpose of matching the text, in order to emphasise what the magazine is about so that if
the audience were to pick up the magazine, they would have a glimpse of what it is about as
a result of reading the cover lines and looking at the images in the magazine.
10. Attracting the Audience
The ways in which I aimed to attract my specific audience was through the use of colours,
font types, images, topics and other characteristics within the magazine. I aimed to make
sure I include the best possible appealing topics. The main features are to be shown by the
cover lines on the front cover of the magazine followed by the contents page. The cover
lines at the front cover of the magazine means that they have to be of the best possible
standards which appeal best to the audience with a reasonable font and size. This is also
true for the mast head. I aimed these features to look very appealing in terms of colour and
again font. Images are also an essential part of the magazine which should aimed to be of
the best possible standard. Well manipulated images are some of the most important
features which an audience would look at first. Another feature which is essential in
catching the audience’s eye are the topics themselves, especially the main topics. If the
main topic is in the audience’s interest, they will want to read the magazine. In the business
world, making sure that their products are of the best quality possible meeting customer
satisfaction, is a way of marketing which would have great consequences of promotion,
assuming that the products meet the requirements. in terms of my magazine, I basically
applied this basic terminology and principle that the better the quality of the product, the
more the customers will be satisfied, assuming that the products are of a higher standard
than that of the competitors, therefore baring in mind the features which are likely to
attract the audience the most at the best possible standard.
11. What I have Learnt from the Preliminary Task
From my preliminary task I have learnt how to use basic Photoshop. This is through editing
and manipulating photos using different including tools such as the lasso tool. This I believe
has helped me to produce the best possible standard on the images. I have also learnt how
about the skills needed to be able to construct a magazine and how to appeal it to audience.
This is in terms of appearance and content within the magazine. In terms of the contents page,
the preliminary task has helped me to have an insight of what a magazine contents page looks
like including the basic features which in must include but in a way that attracts audiences.
This images below shows. Not only has the preliminary task helped me with this but also my
audience research which was useful in helping me get the possible responses for my target
audiences of what they believed to make a successful magazine as well as other things such
as which magazines in the music world they prefer. This has also helped me to look at the
different types of magazines which I can there for base my magazine on. The two images
below shows the production from my preliminary task magazine to my music magazine.
