The Practice Of Method Acting Has Become No Less Than A...
The practice of method acting has become no less than a cultural phenomenon during the last eighty or so years. The idea of an actor throwing himself
so far into a role that character and man become one intrigues and horrifies most. Of course, there is more to it than that. The technique of method
acting became prominent in the mid–twentieth century thanks to teachers like Lee Strasberg of the Actors Studio in New York. In essence, the method
involves a search for truth in a role, wherein the actor or actress recalls emotions or reactions from their own life to inform and identify with the
character. While this approach has produced no doubt some of the best performances of the modern age, there are numerous drawbacks. When an actor

His system, introduced in the late 1890s and early 1900s, relied on emotional memory and a search for inner truth to create great performances.
Stanislavski's original system "require[d] that an actor recreate an event from the distant past in order to regenerate the 'feelings' experienced at that
time. These feelings thus regenerated are then used in the current acting situation in order to fill out the role with 'human depth and personal
involvement'. The necessity of the event being from the distant rather than recent past is because Stanislavski felt (at the time) that time distilled events
and feelings, acting as a 'splendid filter for remembered feelings.'" (Sawoski 19.) Interestingly, Stanislavski later changed his teachings to have a focus
on physical actions, revolving around the idea that internal experiences manifest in physical expression. But, before he changed his tune, two of his
students from his First Studio, Ri chard Boleslavsky and Maria Ouspenskaya, immigrated to the United States and began teaching the Stanislavski
"Method" to American students at the American Laboratory Theatre in 1925. One of their students, Lee Strasberg, later used Stanislavski's theory of
Emotional Memory to teach Affective Memory at the Actor's Studio, even though Stanislavski himself had long since rejected those original ideas.
While Stanislavski may have originated the techniques of

Immunizing Society Against Discrimination
The themes of racism and growing up are significant in Harper Lee's novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus Finch, a lawyer, is trying to defend a
black man who has been falsely accused in a trial. His children Scout and Jem don't understand a lot of the racism occurring in the beginning, but
slowly start to realize that people are being discriminated against and understand what they may be going through as they grow up and mature. How is
discrimination infectious? It can influence the young by family and/or society. Atticus's children Scout and Jem, are brought up with the values of
non–discrimination and these values will help them go far in life. Through the characters of Scout and Jem, Harper Lee demonstrates that when
growing up, people who are exposed to discrimination are encouraged to discriminate in return.
Discrimination is contagious and harmful for the well–being of the society. This book shows how the "mad dog" which symbolizes racism, can enter a
town and spread over like a disease. Calpurnia phones Atticus and shouts "There is a mad dog down the street" (Lee 123). The mad dog is sick and
diseased with rabies which represents racism that is about to enter the town and spread this disease. Just like how rabies is contagious, so is racism.
When Atticus shoots the mad dog it is like he is shooting down racism and prevents this contagious disease from spreading over the town. Secondly,
Miss Maudie shows how one small nutgrass can spread and ruin a whole yard which

The Harmonicus Culture of Hong Kong
What place has the best harmony of the east and the west in the world do you think? The Middle East? Southeast Asia? or China town in the US? I
think Hong Kong has the best harmonious culture in the world because it was a part of England and China, and many people from Hong Kong can
speak English and Chinese. Even until now, China is not much open as many other liberal economy countries, but Hong Kong is. According to Milton
Friedman who is one of the famous economies in the world, and who were awarded the Novel Prize in Economic Sciences, Hong Kong is a good
example of the free market system. Therefore, Hong Kong has been influenced many different cultures, and it becomes one of the harmoniest
countries in the world. It became independent from England, but it has not been included China yet, so it has very distinctive culture. It was
established in July 1st 1997 and would be a part of China 50 years after 1997 (Hong Kong Basic Law). Hong Kong rapidly developed social systems
and economy in 1980. Therefore, there are many similarities and differences between 1980 and now. First, old Hong Kong and now Hong Kong have
similarities in culture, especially movie industry. Hong Kong is one of the most famous movie stars' home town such as Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and
Sammo Hung. In fact, Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, and he lived and went to school in the US, but he went Hong Kong when he was 3 year
old baby and grew up in Hong Kong. By his impressive martial arts and

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee: Walk a Mile in Their...
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a coming of age story of two young children, Scout and Jem Finch, who learn how to live in the prejudiced
society of the fictional town, Maycomb, Alabama. Many characters are involved in helping Scout and Jem learn important lessons and mature, whether
it is by mouth or through actions. They learn how to be more gentleman and ladylike, they learn that people are sometimes cruel and ignorant, but most
importantly, they learn to look at people with more than one perspective. Harper Lee uses the characters Atticus, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley,
to show the idea that one cannot fully understand another person until he or she walks in that person's shoes. Atticus, the father of Scout and Jem,
plays an immensely important role in the children's maturing by teaching them valuable life lessons that benefit their character and knowledge of how to
live in the world. When telling Jem and Scout why Mrs. Dubose acts the way she does, and how he thinks she is one of the most courageous
women he knows, he says, "Courage is when you know your licked before you begin but you begin anyway"(128). The children learn that Mrs.
Dubose was not a mean, old, wicked lady; she was a person trying to get rid of an addiction, even though it would cause her pain to do so. This entire
conversation shows Scout and Jem that people are not always what one perceives them to be, and that one needs to understand why someone does the
things they do before they judge

History of Comic Books
The distribution, audience, narrative style, and dramatic content, of comic books were the direct descendants of the pulp magazine. They were called
pulp magazine because they were printed on the cheapest paper for non–costly mass distribution, these publications were as old as newspaper comic
strips. Pulp magazines can be traced to their Civil War–era ancestors, called dime novels. Unlike the funnies, pulp magazines styles were outside of the
mainstream and featured adventure, fantasy, and suspense. In 1933, Harry Wildenberg and Max Gaines took the traditional comic and folded it in half
and then created the first four–color newsprint comic. It would became the new format which is still seen in modern comic books still today.
The biggest rise in comic books was World War II, because the comic had two underling messages at the time that kept the industry alive: social reform
and patriotism. The DC superhero comics implicitly stressed a common interest in public welfare and strong federal government all based its comics
around the Social status of America at the time. While Marvel comics took up the cause of WWII patriotism in the early creation of Captain America, by
showing Captain America punching Hitler. The biggest underling message of comics during the Golden Age is the defense of normal people and good
citizens. After WWII, the energy driving the Golden Age died off, but that didn't mean that the comic book industry was done creating new heroes or
done expanding it

Christian Counseling: An Overview
Biblical Counseling is making a strong impact in today's churches and community. Counseling is seen as one of the most productive ways of helping a
person reach the inner side of themselves to help solve any problems that might be arising. Furthermore, when it comes to being a counselor, not
something that should be taken for granted. We are all born of sin, but we have been saved through the grace ofJesus Christ. Not everyone bless to be
a counselor, but Dr. Crabb's biblical teaching in Christian counseling will lay out the foundational requirement to enable the ones called by God to be
an effective counselor. The book of Philippians 1:6 states, "being confident of this, that he who began a good work in carry it on to completion until ...

Coca Col A Soft Drink Invented By John Pemberton
TV ads back in the day would try to sell you a product and say why you should buy it. As time goes on, companies got created with their
advertisements, Some added edgy humor in order to sell to a younger audience. Some even hired celebrities to be in the ad for the appeal. Also, if
something becomes mainstream, companies will take advantage of it by incorporating it in their products. For example, Marvel became mainstream
thanks to their cinematic universe movies. Their movies became so successful that companies like Coke would ask to use their intellectual property in
their ads. Coca–Cola is a soft drink invented by John Pemberton on January 29, 1892. Before Pemberton died, the drink didn't reach any success

It is also a bit cheaper to buy. In the ad,it featured the Hulk and the Ant–Man from Marvel. Both of those characters are well known in the Marvel
universe. Coke wanted to include those characters because of their mainstream popularity. The Hulk had his own movie that came out in 2008 and was
a main character in the Avengers movies which, made more than a billion dollars world wide. The Ant–Man movie came out last year and was a box
office success. Since then, these characters became mainstream to the public. Coke wanted to take advantage of the characters because they know
that they will sell more Coke if they had the characters in their ad. It will make people want to buy coke since their favorite superheroes are
associated with the soft drink. For example, a kid might think " Hey the Hulk is drinking coke, I can be as strong as him if I drink Coke." this
makes the audience want to become like their favorite heroes. According to Signs of Life, Linda Serger wrote that "Many of these most successful
films are based on...we identify with the heroes because...we wish we could do what the hero does." (Serger pg. 387). Serger wrote that if the viewer
is fascinated with the character in film or tv and wants to be that character, the media is successful on what it wants to do. In the ad, it opens up with
Ant–Man sneaking into Bruce Banner's (the human form of the Hulk) lab to steal his last Coke Mini.

Inequality in "To Kill a Mockingbird"
One of the major themes of To Kill a Mockingbird is the divisions in human society and how those cause inquality among people. Even though most
people know that they shouldn't judge others, it's human nature, and because of this, it causes different sections of society. Most of the characters
experience this throughout the novel. In To Kill a Mockingbird, certain divisions in society cause inequality in the town of Maycomb, and the characters
and the reader both learn important lessons. When unequal divides in society form, the person or group of people that are looked down upon don't get
the respect that they should. In Maycomb, anyone different from the traditional southern ways gets the short end of the stick. Race is an obvious division
in the society of Maycomb. White people are automatically thought of as good people, while African Americans do not get accepted. The people of
Maycomb seem to think that there's something not right about black people, just because that's not traditional in the south. Tradition states that white
people are better than black people without a question, and we can see through name–calling and the unfair trail that many people in Maycomb still
hold on to this tradition. They don't even think that African Americans deserve to associate with whites hardly at all. Examples of characters
experiencing this divide are Atticus and Tom. Atticus gets looked down upon by a lot of people in the town simply because he wanted to defend Tom,
who was

Exposing Children to Violence in Gerard Jones' Essay...
In Gerard Jones' essay "Violent Media is Good for Kids," he argues a position not taken by many in today's culture. Jones advocates children should
be exposed to violent media in order to overcome real life hardships. The problem with Jones' argument arise when he fails to develop his
somewhat dated ideas and leaves his audience questioning how effective such exposure would be. In the exposition of Jones' essay, he tells the story
of his sheltered childhood. Growing up in a "progressive" family, he was protected from violence in the media. However, after exposure to violent
comic books, especially the Incredible Hulk, Jones had a change of heart. He felt the mental connection between the characters in the comic to his
own life. As a result, he dedicated a portion of his career to educating children on how to use violent comic books to better their lives. Jones partnered
with psychologist Melanie Moore to scientifically study how violent comics can improve adolescent behavior. Therefore, Jones tries to convince his
audience to support his claim, but ultimately falls short. Although Jones' argument is overall shaky, he does incorporate one element that strengthened
his objective. In the seventh paragraph, Jones introduces Melanie Moore, a psychologist who "consults to public schools and local governments." He
explains how they have worked together for the past three years and have developed intensive research. Jones included Moore to strengthen his opinion

MCU
What is the MCU?
A brief over guide
MCU is an American media franchise and shared fictional universe that is centered on a series of superhero films, independently produced by Marvel
Studios and based on characters that appear in Marvel Comics. The franchise has expanded to include comic books, short films, and television series.
The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast,
and characters. Clark Gregg has appeared the most in the franchise, portraying Phil Coulson, a character original to the MCU.
Phase 1
Phase 1 started with 2008's Iron Man since Disney's $4 Billion acquisition of Marvel in 2009 let them adapt even more of their comics into billion
dollar movies. Phase 1 sets up the Avengers initiative and has solos for Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.
The Captain America Film shows a young Steve Rogers before he is experimented on and his battles against Hydra and the Red Skull. I have yet to
see the other movies
Phase 2
Phase 2 is going even further into the Avengers and makes a Thor sequel as well as introducing Captain America into the modern world in his 2nd
solo as well as closing off the Iron Man series. Phase 2 also introduces Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant–Man to the MCU. Ant Man is about a thief
who is chosen to wear a suit that makes him shrink. And the Avengers is about when Tony Stark accidentally creates a robot named Ultron.

To Kill a Mockingbird Essay
There are many different types of symbols in our world today; in English literature as well as all around us on a day–to–day basis. In Harper Lee's To
Kill a Mockingbird we follow a little girl, Scout, as she faces the truth about the world and its injustice. The central and most obvious symbol of
this novel, as well as the title of the book, is the mockingbird. It represents the innocence and injustice in this story, represented by Tom Robinson
and the events surrounding the trial, but also sets the theme of racial prejudice. Racial prejudice is a reoccurring theme of the book, which is
evident in Tom Robinson's trial, but also a good element of the setting because the story is set in the southern United States, where there was much
prejudice against blacks. Old Mrs. Dubose is a very racist woman. You can tell this by the quote she yells at the children on page 102 where she
says, "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Atticus has always told Jem and Scout not to let Mrs. Dubose get to them in
the comments and threats that she yells at them from her porch, but this is the comment that sets Jem off. He takes Scout's baton that she is playing
with and destroys the perfectly white flowers in Mrs. Dubose's yard; every last one of them, and then he breaks the baton as well. There are two
symbols at play here that work with each other to create the irony of this scene. The first one is the flowers themselves; they are described as beautiful

Civil Rights Movement in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
To Kill a Mockingbird was a 1960's novel written by the author Harper Lee from Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement which inspired the
theme of her book; racism. The book is set in the 1930's in Maycomb which is a very poor town. The book is written in the view of Jean–Louise
'Scout' Finch a 6 year old girl who is the son of lawyer Atticus Finch and has a brother called Jem. They are close neighbours to the dreaded Radley
family and especially Boo Radley the son who they are terrified of. Boo has been judged unfairly by the whole town of Maycomb because no one had
seen him in years, people were just going along with old wives tales about him stabbing his mother in the leg. This unfair judgement links in with the
racial prejudice that occurs in Maycomb when black people are treated poorly just because of their colour.
Racism and Segregation happens throughout the book for example when Scout is at school and her teacher Miss Caroline finds out Scout can read
she tells her she can't read because the rest of the class cant, she gets off to a bad start with Miss Caroline when she tries to explain Walter
Cunningham can't afford anything because his family are very poor which gets her in trouble. Also Miss Gates who is very hypocritical says she
condemns what Hitler is doing to the Jews which would make you think she believes in racial equality but then she says she doesn't want blacks to get
equal rights and they shouldn't be treated fairly.

In today's society, it is possible for a woman to achieve nearly anything; however, for a woman of yesterday's society, bringing world–wide recognition
to the many faces of prejudice is an accomplishment of its own. Author Harper Lee has had the honor to accomplish just that through her novel, To Kill
a Mockingbird, a moving and inspirational story about a young girl learning the difference between the good and the bad of the world. In the small
town of Monroeville, Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Growing up, Harper Lee had three siblings: two sisters and an older
brother. She and her siblings grew up modestly. Even though money was not as much of a problem for her family as it was for others of their time,
her father never did spoil her and her siblings. Lee and her brother attended a public grammar school in Monroe County, and Harper Lee continued to
further her education after her high school graduation. She attended Huntingdon College for a year and then transferred to the University of Alabama
at Tuscaloosa where she studied law from 1945 to 1949. While she was at the University of Alabama, she was also an exchange student at Oxford
University in England for a year.
Harper Lee always had a passion for writing. She wrote articles and satires for her college newspaper. Months before completing her law degree, Lee
moved to New York to pursue a writing career. Her first job was as an airlines reservations clerk. Although she never stopped writing

Ravensong by Lee Maracle
Many times when reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could be because the
reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character's perspective and their emotions and that in
return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is the most intriguing for me and the one I found comparing to every book that I read
during school was Stacey from the book "Ravensong" Lee Maracle. The character Stacey goes through a lot of internal battle with herself and it's on

Movie Analysis : Film Revenue
The past decade has seen superhero movies rise to box office dominance. This is a new trend. Batman and Superman movies found success early, but
the surprise blockbusters Spider–man and X–men at the turn of the millennium revealed that the market for comic based entertainment was not yet
saturated (Fritz, 2014). Looking back a decade and a half later, consumer demand has clearly spoken: six of the last ten highest grossing movies were
based on comic books: Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 3, The Avengers, Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen, The Dark Knight, and
Spider–Man 3 (Lev–Ram, 2015). Today, studios have demonstrated confidence that this trend will continue. For example, movies set in the Marvel
Cinematic Universe are scheduled out until at least 2019, with Inhumans set for release in June of that year (Marvel, 2015).
Film revenue is only part of the profit equation. A successful blockbustersuperhero generates interest in its characters, returning massive profits from
merchandising and licensing (Schedeen, 2015). Video games, television spin–offs, collectible toys, apparel, books, and home dГ©cor are just a few
examples that come to mind. These products, in turn, act as advertisement for the films themselves and future films in the franchise by increasing
visibility (Schedeen, 2015). While this works well for franchises in which Marvel owns all rights to the characters, Marvel transferred the film rights
to several of their comics via "a series of

Iacocca: An American Business Leader
Lee Iacocca was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on October 15, 1924. His parents immigrated to America from Italy in the early 1900's in search
of the American dream. Lee's father was a businessman with interests in restaurants, theaters, and a car rental agency. The car rental business is what
sparked Lee's interest in the automobile business. Lee did well in high school and was elected president of his class in the ninth grade. After the
election, he failed to stay in touch with his constituency and lost the election in the second semester. He had forgotten the importance of shaking hands
and being friendly. It was one of his first lessons on leadership.
Lee graduated twelfth in his high school class of over nine hundred and set his sights on pursuing engineering in college. Lee applied, and was

To Kill A Mockingbird: Overcoming Stereotypes Reveals Truth About Characters
During the heart of the Great Depression in Maycomb County, Alabama, an individual 's appearance, values, and reputation often are sources of
limitation to the categorical minds of society. In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, confinement of even the most complex characters expresses the
limiting scope of view of the prejudice society. Atticus Finch, a prosperous small–town lawyer and single father of Scout and Jem defies his stereotypes
of being weak and impotent in his career, as well as in his ability as a father. To his kids, he serves as a source of emasculation and embarrassment
in comparison to other fathers from Maycomb. His erudite nature and aged appearance, with his seemingly passive occupation are read by society
as cowardly and incapable of masculine tasks. The town's sociopath, Arthur "Boo" Radley, comes off as an insensitive recluse who resorts to
violence in his anger, as in the case of his father, as rumors state he mercilessly murders him with a pair of scissors. By distancing himself from
society, the only information society knows about him are snippets of unreliable gossip from the town's crier, Miss Stephanie Crawford. Atticus's age,
moral values on the colored folk, and his lawyer occupation earn him a distinct reputation from the other characters. He is considerably older than
fathers of other children close to Jem and Scout's age, yet defies his stereotyped weakness

The Theme of Loneliness in I Am the King of the Castle Essay
The novel "I am the King of the Castle" clearly explores the themes of loneliness, sadness and depression in its plot. All of the main characters have
difficulties with relationships and end up facing depressive moments and experiences, some insignificant but some crucial and terrifying.
Joseph Hooper (father), Edmund Hooper (son) and Charles Kingshaw are three characters showing explicit loneliness almost throughout the whole
novel. Their loneliness is shown by several reasons and caused by a large number of factors, most involving family issues.
Joseph Hooper's loneliness is caused mainly by his everyday lifestyle and habits. The loss of his wife made him deserted and very distant from his
own son, Edmund Hooper. He is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he says to Miss
Kingshaw " I am a lonely man" right after he meets her, we can immediately spot his sexual urge. Joseph Hooper is a portrait of failure. His lack of
action towards his son and Miss Kingshaw shows he is a very reserved guy, but actually this is not the way he wanted to be. His fears of being
rejected and abandoned control him even though on the inside he wants to take action. He lacks confidence. We can see his deficiency towards
Edmund when instead of controling him and punishing after a fight he thinks to himslef "Perhaps I should strike him. Perhaps it is very foolish to let
him get the upper hand."
Edmund, even when he feels sad, rejects intimacy with Mr Hooper when he says "It is fine, I am all right" after his father questions him about his state
, pushing there relationship further away. He competes with his own son which demonstrates weakness.
Charles Kingshaw is the son of Helena Kingshaw. He has lost his father and is also not close to his mother at all. She tries to educate him but in a very
superficial way and has inability to understand him. It even seems as if it is an obligation of her part and her life is more important than any other
thing. Kingshaw hates everything at Warnings at his first impressions. His mom doesen't have any proper affection for him and dosen't even notice he

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
I did not expect that I would like To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee as much as I do. Written from the perspective of Scout, a young girl in the
1930's, this book takes a look at many issues, including racism and sexism, all from the innocent eyes of a child. This book reveals many of the issues
and struggles faced during the Great Depression. So far, this book is excellently written. Scout, Jem, and Dill are very complex characters. At first, I
thought they were very old; Jem and Scout seem much too intelligent to both be under the age of ten. My first impressions of Scout, Jem, and Dill
are basically the same as they are now. I still think Scout is sassy, passive aggressive, and impulsive. She is also a tomboy. At first, Jem seemed
almost angelic, like he could do no wrong. He always played with his sister, tried to be a gentleman, etc. Jem is a good kid, but he tends to show
off and is sometimes mean to Scout, like when he and Dill refused to talk to her. Dill is a small boy with a huge imagination. "Dill Harris could tell
the biggest ones I ever heard." (Ch. 5, pg. 52). I can relate to Scout the most. I also have an older brother that I used to play with all the time, but he
was sometimes rude and called me names, much like Jem when he calls Scout too much of a girl. Though I may not have been as intelligent or sassy,
I was definitely a tomboy. Though this book is written from a young girl's point of view, even in the first hundred pages there are various forms of

Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee and
Atticus Finch is head of the throne over Joe Gargery of Great Expectations and Chlomo Wiesel of Night. I believe that Atticus Finch is an
astoundingly well adjusted father for many reasons. First of all, he was a single parent that managed to make time for Jem and Scout, his two
children. He is also a courageous, generous, forgiving, and honest man. Atticus Finch is a single parent working an exceptionally hard job to bring in
enough income to pay his maid and supply the needs for his children. He is away most of the day at the courthouse defending his clients. Although his
job sometimes required long hours, he still made time to read to his daughter at bedtime and pass a ball with his son. Therefore, Atticus Finch of To Kill
a Mockingbird is the better father over Joe Gargery of Great Expectations and Chlomo Wiesel of Night because of his courageousness, generosity,
forgiveness, and honesty.
Atticus shows true courage by trying every way to help others who were in the need of it. First of all, it is courageous of Atticus to take the Tom
Robinson case. Even his own family disagreed of taking the case because of the bias. He takes many risks when taking the Tom Robinson case. He
risks the chance of critization by the people that live in the Maycomb County. Mrs. Dubose criticizes him when she said, "Atticus is a Nigger lover!''
(100). With many prejudice people living in Maycomb County Atticus also risks the chance of not being re–elected for legislature. Secondly, it is

Queerness in Lee MaracleВґs Ravensong
Author Lee Maracle's 1993 novel Ravensong doesn't centre around queerness or lesbian sexuality or two–spirit identity in the way that you might
expect in a book reviewed here. It's a beautiful and powerful novel about settler and Indigenous relations regardless, but its main character Stacey,
a young Salish woman living on a reserve in the 1950s, isn't explicitly or implicity queer (although she is potentially queer, I would say, given
Maracle's take on sexuality). There is, however, a lesbian couple who feature as secondary characters in Ravensong, and I think their inclusion is
really significant, for a few reasons. Mostly, I find the way that the novel deals with queer sexuality in relation to its politics of decolonization
fascinating. In fact, I think honing in on how the novel deals with queerness is a great way to understand what it's trying to do in terms of
decolonizing. The absence in Ravensong of an explicit assertion of queerness, the fact that it doesn't "come out," as it were, as a queer text, is no
failure at all but rather indicates an entirely different method of interrogating issues of queer sexuality. Let me explain: The main plot of Ravensong
revolves around Stacey, who is a high school student in "white town" while living on her community's reserve. Stacey is continually negotiating how
to fit in and succeed in school (she hopes to attend UBC to become a teacher and would be the first Native woman to do so) and how to remain a

Courage in to Kill a Mockingbird
"I wanted to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun." What kinds of heroism and courage are shown in
To Kill a Mockingbird? Discuss.
Courage is defined as "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness." According to Atticus Finch, one of the
main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through
no matter what." (pg.121). Harper Lee clearly portrays the theme of courage in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. One likes to think of a hero, as

When Atticus took the case, he went up against Maycomb, a generally prejudiced town, in order to defend Tom. He understood that taking the case
would make him an object of ridicule and that no one would forgive him for believing a black man's word over a white man's. Even his own sister
expresses disapproval at his decision, practically telling him he was bringing disgrace to the family. Nevertheless, no matter how much his reputation
suffered, he did not change his mind. Standing up for his morals and ethics was more important than what people thought about him. From the very
start Atticus knows he will not win the case however he does his job and finishes what he set out to do.
Atticus's strong sense of morality and justice motivates him to defend Tom Robinson with determination, giving it all he has. He shows this when
he says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try and win." (pg.82). He says this to Scout
after she comes home from school angry at Cecil Jacobs for making fun of Atticus in the schoolyard. Atticus tells her to fight with her head instead of

The Characters Of The Novel Of Kill A Mockingbird By...
Chapters 1–2 In the first two chapters of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, we are introduced to some of the main characters and get some history
on them. The main character of the story is a young boy or girl, who is very smart and thoughtful for their age of 6. The story begins by describing
the ancestors of the main character as well as some background in the town of Maycomb, such as the stories about the Radleys and their mysterious
ways. While reading I noticed the incredibly obvious difference in language, and way of life. When the character told of his/her childhood, and how
there were mules to bring supplies around, as well as the brick/dirt roads, which are almost nowhere to be seen in most towns now. While I was reading

She was having lots of trouble in school due to her learning from Atticus and Calpurina, as well as not getting along with the other children, like
Walter, who she was rude to. Walter is from a poor family, and I think shows how the social class works in the story. When I had first started
reading the book I thought Scout was a boy, since she was always hanging out with her brother and Dill. The way that she acts is very different than
how girls are "supposed to act" and I really appreciate the impartial views of the author, and hope the views are continued through the story. I really
like that Scout is a tough girl, who isn't afraid to do all the things her brother and other boys do.
While Scout is a smart girl, I don't feel that a first grader can be as smart as the author is portraying, I really think that the book is told from a much
older Scout who is looking back on the events during her childhood, which it had shown at the beginning of the story as she was talking in past tense.

Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee
"...remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (90). Although, it's not a crime to shoot one in the back seventeen times or send it to prison first for
unjust reasons. It's events like these that make people lose their innocents; in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Nelle Harper Lee, losing one's innocents is
just a pocket–sized trouble he or she has to worry about in Maycomb, Alabama. For Jean Louise, "Scout", and Jeremy, "Jem", Finch, growing up in the
times of great economic depression and towering racial tension, losing innocents is a sure thing. Which is what sparks this page–turning,
coming–off–age, classic; like all great literature of this caliber. Lee delves into a fundamental storyline nourished with interlocking themes of
perspective, innocence, law–bending, and even bravery; all come across in a symbolic and profound way, deep in between the lines of Lee's literary
treasure.
To begin, Lee's concept of perspective, as explored in this novel, is that if a person can change their view it can cause a more authentic and truthful
portrayal of the situation or person that is being viewed. For instance, Mrs.Dubose, the hostile neighbor who lives down the street from the Finches, is a
thought to be women vile of heart and Jem ultimately mutilates all her flowers landscaped in her front yard in return for her ignorant
comments.Consequently, Atticus formulates the punishment of reading to her for a specific time period every day, also associating with that a lesson

The Prejudice of Maycomb "All men are created equal", one of the most ignored statements that our founding fathers wrote in the Constitution. People
exercise prejudice everywhere in the U.S. Prejudice is a topic that is constantly revisited in Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Her novel
focuses on Scout, the daughter of Atticus Finch, living her life in the 1930s of rural Maycomb, Alabama. Scout witnesses the injustice and prejudice
against many people, not only Negroes. The heat of prejudice rises when Atticus decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black who is going under trial for

Calpurnia responds that "folks don't like to have somebody around knowin' more than they do. It aggravates'em. You're not gonna change any of them
by talking right, they've got to learn themselves, and when they don't want to learn, there's nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their
language."(Lee 167) Calpurnia 's insight offers us a look at the language divide between whites and blacks. White people dislike a person who speaks
like a black and black people dislike a person who speaks like a white. The fact that the black community despises the way whites act and vice versa
shows the fear of difference. Scout's neighbor, Mrs. Dubose also dislikes people who act differently, including Atticus, which is shown when, she
shouts at Scout. "'Yes indeed, what has the world come to when a Finch goes against his raising? I'll tell you.' She put her hand to her mouth. When
she drew it away, It trailed a long silver thread of saliva. 'Your father's no better than the niggers and trash that he works for!'"(Lee 135) Mrs. Dubose
dislikes people who act differently than expected. Atticus acted differently than other people earning him the hatred of Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose also
compares Negroes to trash, showing that she also hates Negroes, probably because they have different skin color from her. The town of Maycomb

The Lackluster Town of Holcomb
Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "A man's interest in a single bluebird is worth more than a complete but dry list of the fauna and flora of a town"
(Thoreau). Truman Capote, author of In Cold Blood, disagrees with Thoreau's sentiment and utilizes his description of Holcomb, Kansas to produce an
illustration of a rustic village within the minds of his audience. Capote portrays the town as utterly average as well as drab and dreary in nature so that
he can convince the audience that Holcomb was nothing more than "a haphazard hamlet" and to foreshadow the coming drama (para. 2). Through an
ingenious application of vivid imagery, superfluous syntax, fantastic figurative language, as well as a tone laced with melancholy, the speaker
effectively demonstrates that Holcomb is nothing special and induces a feeling of normalcy and simple serenity within the audience while
simultaneously foreshadowing the future turmoil. In the excerpt from In Cold Blood, Capote couples intriguing imagery with his gloomy and, at times,
dull tone to emphasize the fact that Holcomb, like Maycomb, the setting of Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is a desolate place deprived of
drama as well as to foreshadow that change is coming to the tiny town. Capote uses imagery to paint a picture in the minds of his readers of a ghost
town utterly destitute of life and completely isolated in the wilderness of Arkansas. When the speaker monotonously says, "...irrelevant sign, this one in

Big Impacts On My Childhood
When I think of big impacts on my childhood, heroes are definitely near the top. Whether it was Legolas from Lord of the Rings or Lara Croft in
Tomb Raider, I wanted to save the world. Maybe that 's why I fell in love with comics early on. I wanted the admiration from my peers that these
heroes got from me, and yet, the world doesn 't work that way. I realized pretty quickly that it wasn 't like in the movies and comics. The world
didn 't exist to give you a pat on the back whenever you did a good deed. Maybe that 's why from the moment I picked up my first XMEN comic, I
fell in love. FINALLY there were heroes who lived in a more realistic society. The world they protected, shunned them. They were spat on by those
they saved. Here I was, a geeky, straight A, small, spindly little fourth grader with glasses and flood pants who had always tried to be the hero.
Finally I had found a group of people who were as unappreciated as I felt. It seems as though many others felt that way too, and quickly Xmen became
Marvels' crowning glory, yet as the newest generation rolls in, Marvel has had a stroke of luck with a film deal of the Avengers series, and of course the
population eats it up. It seems as though Marvel has been putting a lot of effort into anything Avengers since Fox owns the rights to Xmen. This
unfortunate fact makes me bitter because Xmen contains much more positive messaging for audiences than the currently more successful Avengers.

Matrix-Analysis
Matrix and Bhagavad Gita:– Matrix is not just an ordinary science fiction movie and is in actual a philosophical message woven around a science

that enlightens soldier in war by banishing all self–doubts and dilemmas. In matrix, it's clear from the very beginning that a war is going on and the way

Basic strength of Neo in movie is ability to combat with agents which others have failed in the past. So the very thing in which we can differentiate

speed and accuracy can not be achieved without control over my mind. Some of the Bruce Lees quotes which highlight these facts are

The Importance Of Inequality, And The Way We View Others
When writing the Constitution, Thomas Jefferson said, "...all men are created equal...". When he wrote this, he was not referring to the African

at the time all men were not created equal? This is only one example of the many times throughout history where people showed a lack of fairness or
justice. Such is the case in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. In this iconic novel, Lee symbolizes the importance of inequality, and the way we view
others. The book takes place in Maycomb County, a sleepy town in southern Alabama during the 1930s when poverty and unemployment were

Robinson however, states that he came inside the Ewell 's house at Mayella 's request, and she suddenly kissed him and grabbed him around the
waist while he stood on a chair. He immediately ran from the house out of fear, and as he did, Bob Ewell appeared at the window, and began to
yell at Mayella. He also tells the jury that he would often help Mayella with small jobs out of empathy, but never intended to hurt her. As Scout
watches the case she notices that "Tom Robinson was probably the only person who was ever decent to her" (257). The town of Maycomb assumes
that all African Americans are essentially incapable of compassion, when they are the same internally as the white population in Maycomb. Despite
all of the crude comments that Tom receives, he still has the common decency to treat everyone equally. Tom Robinson will always be a better man
than people such as Bob Ewell, but the town of Maycomb doesn't comprehend this simply because they only see a white man and a black man. Scout
is not the only one who has come to this realization; Tom's employer, Mr. Link Deas, also views Tom as an honorable, and kind person.During the trial,

The Practice Of Method Acting Has Become No Less Than A...

  • 1. The Practice Of Method Acting Has Become No Less Than A... The practice of method acting has become no less than a cultural phenomenon during the last eighty or so years. The idea of an actor throwing himself so far into a role that character and man become one intrigues and horrifies most. Of course, there is more to it than that. The technique of method acting became prominent in the mid–twentieth century thanks to teachers like Lee Strasberg of the Actors Studio in New York. In essence, the method involves a search for truth in a role, wherein the actor or actress recalls emotions or reactions from their own life to inform and identify with the character. While this approach has produced no doubt some of the best performances of the modern age, there are numerous drawbacks. When an actor dives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His system, introduced in the late 1890s and early 1900s, relied on emotional memory and a search for inner truth to create great performances. Stanislavski's original system "require[d] that an actor recreate an event from the distant past in order to regenerate the 'feelings' experienced at that time. These feelings thus regenerated are then used in the current acting situation in order to fill out the role with 'human depth and personal involvement'. The necessity of the event being from the distant rather than recent past is because Stanislavski felt (at the time) that time distilled events and feelings, acting as a 'splendid filter for remembered feelings.'" (Sawoski 19.) Interestingly, Stanislavski later changed his teachings to have a focus on physical actions, revolving around the idea that internal experiences manifest in physical expression. But, before he changed his tune, two of his students from his First Studio, Ri chard Boleslavsky and Maria Ouspenskaya, immigrated to the United States and began teaching the Stanislavski "Method" to American students at the American Laboratory Theatre in 1925. One of their students, Lee Strasberg, later used Stanislavski's theory of Emotional Memory to teach Affective Memory at the Actor's Studio, even though Stanislavski himself had long since rejected those original ideas. While Stanislavski may have originated the techniques of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Immunizing Society Against Discrimination The themes of racism and growing up are significant in Harper Lee's novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus Finch, a lawyer, is trying to defend a black man who has been falsely accused in a trial. His children Scout and Jem don't understand a lot of the racism occurring in the beginning, but slowly start to realize that people are being discriminated against and understand what they may be going through as they grow up and mature. How is discrimination infectious? It can influence the young by family and/or society. Atticus's children Scout and Jem, are brought up with the values of non–discrimination and these values will help them go far in life. Through the characters of Scout and Jem, Harper Lee demonstrates that when growing up, people who are exposed to discrimination are encouraged to discriminate in return. Discrimination is contagious and harmful for the well–being of the society. This book shows how the "mad dog" which symbolizes racism, can enter a town and spread over like a disease. Calpurnia phones Atticus and shouts "There is a mad dog down the street" (Lee 123). The mad dog is sick and diseased with rabies which represents racism that is about to enter the town and spread this disease. Just like how rabies is contagious, so is racism. When Atticus shoots the mad dog it is like he is shooting down racism and prevents this contagious disease from spreading over the town. Secondly, Miss Maudie shows how one small nutgrass can spread and ruin a whole yard which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Harmonicus Culture of Hong Kong What place has the best harmony of the east and the west in the world do you think? The Middle East? Southeast Asia? or China town in the US? I think Hong Kong has the best harmonious culture in the world because it was a part of England and China, and many people from Hong Kong can speak English and Chinese. Even until now, China is not much open as many other liberal economy countries, but Hong Kong is. According to Milton Friedman who is one of the famous economies in the world, and who were awarded the Novel Prize in Economic Sciences, Hong Kong is a good example of the free market system. Therefore, Hong Kong has been influenced many different cultures, and it becomes one of the harmoniest countries in the world. It became independent from England, but it has not been included China yet, so it has very distinctive culture. It was established in July 1st 1997 and would be a part of China 50 years after 1997 (Hong Kong Basic Law). Hong Kong rapidly developed social systems and economy in 1980. Therefore, there are many similarities and differences between 1980 and now. First, old Hong Kong and now Hong Kong have similarities in culture, especially movie industry. Hong Kong is one of the most famous movie stars' home town such as Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Sammo Hung. In fact, Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, and he lived and went to school in the US, but he went Hong Kong when he was 3 year old baby and grew up in Hong Kong. • 6. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee: Walk a Mile in Their... To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a coming of age story of two young children, Scout and Jem Finch, who learn how to live in the prejudiced society of the fictional town, Maycomb, Alabama. Many characters are involved in helping Scout and Jem learn important lessons and mature, whether it is by mouth or through actions. They learn how to be more gentleman and ladylike, they learn that people are sometimes cruel and ignorant, but most importantly, they learn to look at people with more than one perspective. Harper Lee uses the characters Atticus, Dolphus Raymond, and Boo Radley, to show the idea that one cannot fully understand another person until he or she walks in that person's shoes. Atticus, the father of Scout and Jem, plays an immensely important role in the children's maturing by teaching them valuable life lessons that benefit their character and knowledge of how to live in the world. When telling Jem and Scout why Mrs. Dubose acts the way she does, and how he thinks she is one of the most courageous women he knows, he says, "Courage is when you know your licked before you begin but you begin anyway"(128). The children learn that Mrs. Dubose was not a mean, old, wicked lady; she was a person trying to get rid of an addiction, even though it would cause her pain to do so. This entire conversation shows Scout and Jem that people are not always what one perceives them to be, and that one needs to understand why someone does the things they do before they judge ... • 7. History of Comic Books The distribution, audience, narrative style, and dramatic content, of comic books were the direct descendants of the pulp magazine. They were called pulp magazine because they were printed on the cheapest paper for non–costly mass distribution, these publications were as old as newspaper comic strips. Pulp magazines can be traced to their Civil War–era ancestors, called dime novels. Unlike the funnies, pulp magazines styles were outside of the mainstream and featured adventure, fantasy, and suspense. In 1933, Harry Wildenberg and Max Gaines took the traditional comic and folded it in half and then created the first four–color newsprint comic. It would became the new format which is still seen in modern comic books still today. The biggest rise in comic books was World War II, because the comic had two underling messages at the time that kept the industry alive: social reform and patriotism. The DC superhero comics implicitly stressed a common interest in public welfare and strong federal government all based its comics around the Social status of America at the time. While Marvel comics took up the cause of WWII patriotism in the early creation of Captain America, by showing Captain America punching Hitler. The biggest underling message of comics during the Golden Age is the defense of normal people and good citizens. After WWII, the energy driving the Golden Age died off, but that didn't mean that the comic book industry was done creating new heroes or done expanding it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Counseling is seen as one of the most productive ways of helping a person reach the inner side of themselves to help solve any problems that might be arising. Furthermore, when it comes to being a counselor, not something that should be taken for granted. We are all born of sin, but we have been saved through the grace ofJesus Christ. Not everyone bless to be a counselor, but Dr. Crabb's biblical teaching in Christian counseling will lay out the foundational requirement to enable the ones called by God to be an effective counselor. • 13. Inequality in "To Kill a Mockingbird" One of the major themes of To Kill a Mockingbird is the divisions in human society and how those cause inquality among people. Even though most people know that they shouldn't judge others, it's human nature, and because of this, it causes different sections of society. Most of the characters experience this throughout the novel. In To Kill a Mockingbird, certain divisions in society cause inequality in the town of Maycomb, and the characters and the reader both learn important lessons. When unequal divides in society form, the person or group of people that are looked down upon don't get the respect that they should. In Maycomb, anyone different from the traditional southern ways gets the short end of the stick. Race is an obvious division in the society of Maycomb. White people are automatically thought of as good people, while African Americans do not get accepted. The people of Maycomb seem to think that there's something not right about black people, just because that's not traditional in the south. Tradition states that white people are better than black people without a question, and we can see through name–calling and the unfair trail that many people in Maycomb still hold on to this tradition. They don't even think that African Americans deserve to associate with whites hardly at all. Examples of characters experiencing this divide are Atticus and Tom. Jones advocates children should be exposed to violent media in order to overcome real life hardships. The problem with Jones' argument arise when he fails to develop his somewhat dated ideas and leaves his audience questioning how effective such exposure would be. In the exposition of Jones' essay, he tells the story of his sheltered childhood. Growing up in a "progressive" family, he was protected from violence in the media. However, after exposure to violent comic books, especially the Incredible Hulk, Jones had a change of heart. He felt the mental connection between the characters in the comic to his own life. As a result, he dedicated a portion of his career to educating children on how to use violent comic books to better their lives. Jones partnered with psychologist Melanie Moore to scientifically study how violent comics can improve adolescent behavior. Therefore, Jones tries to convince his audience to support his claim, but ultimately falls short. Although Jones' argument is overall shaky, he does incorporate one element that strengthened his objective. In the seventh paragraph, Jones introduces Melanie Moore, a psychologist who "consults to public schools and local governments." He explains how they have worked together for the past three years and have developed intensive research. Jones included Moore to strengthen his opinion and show the ... • 16. To Kill a Mockingbird Essay There are many different types of symbols in our world today; in English literature as well as all around us on a day–to–day basis. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird we follow a little girl, Scout, as she faces the truth about the world and its injustice. The central and most obvious symbol of this novel, as well as the title of the book, is the mockingbird. It represents the innocence and injustice in this story, represented by Tom Robinson and the events surrounding the trial, but also sets the theme of racial prejudice. Racial prejudice is a reoccurring theme of the book, which is evident in Tom Robinson's trial, but also a good element of the setting because the story is set in the southern United States, where there was much prejudice against blacks. Old Mrs. Dubose is a very racist woman. You can tell this by the quote she yells at the children on page 102 where she says, "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Atticus has always told Jem and Scout not to let Mrs. Dubose get to them in the comments and threats that she yells at them from her porch, but this is the comment that sets Jem off. He takes Scout's baton that she is playing with and destroys the perfectly white flowers in Mrs. Dubose's yard; every last one of them, and then he breaks the baton as well. There are two symbols at play here that work with each other to create the irony of this scene. The first one is the flowers themselves; they are described as beautiful and ... • 17. Civil Rights Movement in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee To Kill a Mockingbird was a 1960's novel written by the author Harper Lee from Alabama during the Civil Rights Movement which inspired the theme of her book; racism. The book is set in the 1930's in Maycomb which is a very poor town. The book is written in the view of Jean–Louise 'Scout' Finch a 6 year old girl who is the son of lawyer Atticus Finch and has a brother called Jem. They are close neighbours to the dreaded Radley family and especially Boo Radley the son who they are terrified of. Boo has been judged unfairly by the whole town of Maycomb because no one had seen him in years, people were just going along with old wives tales about him stabbing his mother in the leg. This unfair judgement links in with the racial prejudice that occurs in Maycomb when black people are treated poorly just because of their colour. Racism and Segregation happens throughout the book for example when Scout is at school and her teacher Miss Caroline finds out Scout can read she tells her she can't read because the rest of the class cant, she gets off to a bad start with Miss Caroline when she tries to explain Walter Cunningham can't afford anything because his family are very poor which gets her in trouble. Also Miss Gates who is very hypocritical says she condemns what Hitler is doing to the Jews which would make you think she believes in racial equality but then she says she doesn't want blacks to get equal rights and they shouldn't be treated fairly. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee In today's society, it is possible for a woman to achieve nearly anything; however, for a woman of yesterday's society, bringing world–wide recognition to the many faces of prejudice is an accomplishment of its own. Author Harper Lee has had the honor to accomplish just that through her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, a moving and inspirational story about a young girl learning the difference between the good and the bad of the world. In the small town of Monroeville, Alabama, Nelle Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Growing up, Harper Lee had three siblings: two sisters and an older brother. She and her siblings grew up modestly. Even though money was not as much of a problem for her family as it was for others of their time, her father never did spoil her and her siblings. Lee and her brother attended a public grammar school in Monroe County, and Harper Lee continued to further her education after her high school graduation. She attended Huntingdon College for a year and then transferred to the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where she studied law from 1945 to 1949. While she was at the University of Alabama, she was also an exchange student at Oxford University in England for a year. Harper Lee always had a passion for writing. • 22. Movie Analysis : Film Revenue The past decade has seen superhero movies rise to box office dominance. This is a new trend. Batman and Superman movies found success early, but the surprise blockbusters Spider–man and X–men at the turn of the millennium revealed that the market for comic based entertainment was not yet saturated (Fritz, 2014). Looking back a decade and a half later, consumer demand has clearly spoken: six of the last ten highest grossing movies were based on comic books: Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 3, The Avengers, Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen, The Dark Knight, and Spider–Man 3 (Lev–Ram, 2015). Today, studios have demonstrated confidence that this trend will continue. For example, movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are scheduled out until at least 2019, with Inhumans set for release in June of that year (Marvel, 2015). Film revenue is only part of the profit equation. A successful blockbustersuperhero generates interest in its characters, returning massive profits from merchandising and licensing (Schedeen, 2015). Video games, television spin–offs, collectible toys, apparel, books, and home dГ©cor are just a few examples that come to mind. These products, in turn, act as advertisement for the films themselves and future films in the franchise by increasing visibility (Schedeen, 2015). Written from the perspective of Scout, a young girl in the 1930's, this book takes a look at many issues, including racism and sexism, all from the innocent eyes of a child. This book reveals many of the issues and struggles faced during the Great Depression. So far, this book is excellently written. Scout, Jem, and Dill are very complex characters. At first, I thought they were very old; Jem and Scout seem much too intelligent to both be under the age of ten. My first impressions of Scout, Jem, and Dill are basically the same as they are now. I still think Scout is sassy, passive aggressive, and impulsive. She is also a tomboy. At first, Jem seemed almost angelic, like he could do no wrong. He always played with his sister, tried to be a gentleman, etc. Jem is a good kid, but he tends to show off and is sometimes mean to Scout, like when he and Dill refused to talk to her. Dill is a small boy with a huge imagination. "Dill Harris could tell the biggest ones I ever heard." (Ch. 5, pg. 52). I can relate to Scout the most. I also have an older brother that I used to play with all the time, but he was sometimes rude and called me names, much like Jem when he calls Scout too much of a girl. He is also a courageous, generous, forgiving, and honest man. Atticus Finch is a single parent working an exceptionally hard job to bring in enough income to pay his maid and supply the needs for his children. Queerness in Lee MaracleВґs Ravensong Author Lee Maracle's 1993 novel Ravensong doesn't centre around queerness or lesbian sexuality or two–spirit identity in the way that you might expect in a book reviewed here. It's a beautiful and powerful novel about settler and Indigenous relations regardless, but its main character Stacey, a young Salish woman living on a reserve in the 1950s, isn't explicitly or implicity queer (although she is potentially queer, I would say, given Maracle's take on sexuality). There is, however, a lesbian couple who feature as secondary characters in Ravensong, and I think their inclusion is really significant, for a few reasons. Mostly, I find the way that the novel deals with queer sexuality in relation to its politics of decolonization fascinating. In fact, I think honing in on how the novel deals with queerness is a great way to understand what it's trying to do in terms of decolonizing. The absence in Ravensong of an explicit assertion of queerness, the fact that it doesn't "come out," as it were, as a queer text, is no failure at all but rather indicates an entirely different method of interrogating issues of queer sexuality. Let me explain: The main plot of Ravensong revolves around Stacey, who is a high school student in "white town" while living on her community's reserve. Stacey is continually negotiating how to fit in and succeed in school (she hopes to attend UBC to become a teacher and would be the first Native woman to do so) and how to remain a solid member of ... • 30. Courage in to Kill a Mockingbird "I wanted to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun." What kinds of heroism and courage are shown in To Kill a Mockingbird? Discuss. Courage is defined as "the quality of mind or spirit enabling one to meet danger or opposition with fearlessness." According to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (pg.121). Harper Lee clearly portrays the theme of courage in her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. One likes to think of a hero, as strong, brave, and meeting all challenges head on. When Atticus took the case, he went up against Maycomb, a generally prejudiced town, in order to defend Tom. He understood that taking the case would make him an object of ridicule and that no one would forgive him for believing a black man's word over a white man's. Even his own sister expresses disapproval at his decision, practically telling him he was bringing disgrace to the family. Nevertheless, no matter how much his reputation suffered, he did not change his mind. Standing up for his morals and ethics was more important than what people thought about him. From the very start Atticus knows he will not win the case however he does his job and finishes what he set out to do. Atticus's strong sense of morality and justice motivates him to defend Tom Robinson with determination, giving it all he has. He shows this when he says, "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try and win." (pg.82). He says this to Scout after she comes home from school angry at Cecil Jacobs for making fun of Atticus in the schoolyard. Atticus tells her to fight with her head instead of her fists. He wants the people of Maycomb to hear the truth about Tom, "That boy may go to the chair, but he's not going till the truth's told." (pg.159). • 31. The Characters Of The Novel Of Kill A Mockingbird By... Chapters 1–2 In the first two chapters of Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, we are introduced to some of the main characters and get some history on them. The main character of the story is a young boy or girl, who is very smart and thoughtful for their age of 6. The story begins by describing the ancestors of the main character as well as some background in the town of Maycomb, such as the stories about the Radleys and their mysterious ways. While reading I noticed the incredibly obvious difference in language, and way of life. When the character told of his/her childhood, and how there were mules to bring supplies around, as well as the brick/dirt roads, which are almost nowhere to be seen in most towns now. While I was reading ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She was having lots of trouble in school due to her learning from Atticus and Calpurina, as well as not getting along with the other children, like Walter, who she was rude to. Walter is from a poor family, and I think shows how the social class works in the story. When I had first started reading the book I thought Scout was a boy, since she was always hanging out with her brother and Dill. The way that she acts is very different than how girls are "supposed to act" and I really appreciate the impartial views of the author, and hope the views are continued through the story. I really like that Scout is a tough girl, who isn't afraid to do all the things her brother and other boys do. While Scout is a smart girl, I don't feel that a first grader can be as smart as the author is portraying, I really think that the book is told from a much older Scout who is looking back on the events during her childhood, which it had shown at the beginning of the story as she was talking in past tense. I'm incredibly interested to learn more about the creepy Radleys and what had happened to Gem's arm. Chapters 5–6 Chapters five and six of To Kill a Mockingbird summer is back again and so is Dill. Bringing even more trouble than last summer. Dill was determined on having Boo Radley come out since he had first come to Maycomb. • 33. Kill A Mockingbird By Harper Lee "...remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (90). Although, it's not a crime to shoot one in the back seventeen times or send it to prison first for unjust reasons. It's events like these that make people lose their innocents; in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Nelle Harper Lee, losing one's innocents is just a pocket–sized trouble he or she has to worry about in Maycomb, Alabama. For Jean Louise, "Scout", and Jeremy, "Jem", Finch, growing up in the times of great economic depression and towering racial tension, losing innocents is a sure thing. Which is what sparks this page–turning, coming–off–age, classic; like all great literature of this caliber. Lee delves into a fundamental storyline nourished with interlocking themes of perspective, innocence, law–bending, and even bravery; all come across in a symbolic and profound way, deep in between the lines of Lee's literary treasure. To begin, Lee's concept of perspective, as explored in this novel, is that if a person can change their view it can cause a more authentic and truthful portrayal of the situation or person that is being viewed. For instance, Mrs.Dubose, the hostile neighbor who lives down the street from the Finches, is a thought to be women vile of heart and Jem ultimately mutilates all her flowers landscaped in her front yard in return for her ignorant comments.Consequently, Atticus formulates the punishment of reading to her for a specific time period every day, also associating with that a lesson of changing ... People exercise prejudice everywhere in the U.S. Prejudice is a topic that is constantly revisited in Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Her novel focuses on Scout, the daughter of Atticus Finch, living her life in the 1930s of rural Maycomb, Alabama. Scout witnesses the injustice and prejudice against many people, not only Negroes. The heat of prejudice rises when Atticus decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black who is going under trial for allegedly raping a white girl. Despite the clear evidence that Robinson is innocent, ... You're not gonna change any of them by talking right, they've got to learn themselves, and when they don't want to learn, there's nothing you can do but keep your mouth shut or talk their language."(Lee 167) Calpurnia 's insight offers us a look at the language divide between whites and blacks. White people dislike a person who speaks like a black and black people dislike a person who speaks like a white. The fact that the black community despises the way whites act and vice versa shows the fear of difference. Scout's neighbor, Mrs. Dubose also dislikes people who act differently, including Atticus, which is shown when, she shouts at Scout. "'Yes indeed, what has the world come to when a Finch goes against his raising? I'll tell you.' She put her hand to her mouth. When she drew it away, It trailed a long silver thread of saliva. • 35. The Lackluster Town of Holcomb Henry David Thoreau once wrote, "A man's interest in a single bluebird is worth more than a complete but dry list of the fauna and flora of a town" (Thoreau). Truman Capote, author of In Cold Blood, disagrees with Thoreau's sentiment and utilizes his description of Holcomb, Kansas to produce an illustration of a rustic village within the minds of his audience. Capote portrays the town as utterly average as well as drab and dreary in nature so that he can convince the audience that Holcomb was nothing more than "a haphazard hamlet" and to foreshadow the coming drama (para. 2). Through an ingenious application of vivid imagery, superfluous syntax, fantastic figurative language, as well as a tone laced with melancholy, the speaker effectively demonstrates that Holcomb is nothing special and induces a feeling of normalcy and simple serenity within the audience while simultaneously foreshadowing the future turmoil. In the excerpt from In Cold Blood, Capote couples intriguing imagery with his gloomy and, at times, dull tone to emphasize the fact that Holcomb, like Maycomb, the setting of Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird, is a desolate place deprived of drama as well as to foreshadow that change is coming to the tiny town. Capote uses imagery to paint a picture in the minds of his readers of a ghost town utterly destitute of life and completely isolated in the wilderness of Arkansas. Whether it was Legolas from Lord of the Rings or Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, I wanted to save the world. Maybe that 's why I fell in love with comics early on. I wanted the admiration from my peers that these heroes got from me, and yet, the world doesn 't work that way. I realized pretty quickly that it wasn 't like in the movies and comics. The world didn 't exist to give you a pat on the back whenever you did a good deed. Maybe that 's why from the moment I picked up my first XMEN comic, I fell in love. FINALLY there were heroes who lived in a more realistic society. The world they protected, shunned them. They were spat on by those they saved. Here I was, a geeky, straight A, small, spindly little fourth grader with glasses and flood pants who had always tried to be the hero. Finally I had found a group of people who were as unappreciated as I felt. It seems as though many others felt that way too, and quickly Xmen became Marvels' crowning glory, yet as the newest generation rolls in, Marvel has had a stroke of luck with a film deal of the Avengers series, and of course the population eats it up. It seems as though Marvel has been putting a lot of effort into anything Avengers since Fox owns the rights to Xmen. This unfortunate fact makes me bitter because Xmen contains much more positive messaging for audiences than the currently more successful Avengers. Xmen hasn't been getting much love ...
