1. A. Philosophy and Education
The context of philosophy and education is a complicated weaving
of dimensions. Cultural considerations are seen to be sources of patterns
of behavior which is constituted with different disciplines to refine
behaviors, beliefs and attitudes. It is through formal trainings in schools
that one’s philosophy is guided by principles. Man, by nature has its
own unique inborn characteristics which changes through time as he
grows and mature. Education plays a very important role in defining his
character and behavior. According to Webster, education is the sum of
the qualities acquired through individual maturation and social training.
Therefore, man along with his expected maturation stage is best refined
through formal training in schools and academic institutions.
Our Philippine education system is a laboratory of thought which
is based on particular philosophy in which the main intention is to
develop one’s full potential. A Filipino learner is viewed to be a future
asset of his family and community. This is the reason why it is believed
that education of a child should have a relevance to his context. Every
community has its own unique context. It is therefore a responsibility of
a teacher and school leader to study the unique characteristics of the
community served and the context of the people living in the area and
their personal and common philosophy in life so that education can be
more relevant. If the kind of education provided by the school in the
community will have a harmonious relationship with each other. They
will be more motivated to push more improvement in their lives if it is
coupled with an education guided by reasons.
2. B. The Different Schools of Philosophy which Affects Education
There are four philosophies that is mostly affecting education,
namely, idealism, realism, humanism and experimentalism. Idealism is
seen as the oldest systematic philosophy which I personally gained from
my formal and informal training which includes my personal
experiences in dealing with life’s realities. I believe in what my mind
conceives and behaves according to what should be rightful in the
human eyes.
Another philosophy that was pointed out was on realism.
According to the report presented, realism is based on the knowledge of
reality of existence and the mind tending to believe it really exist.
Realities of life are observable and can be proven true if there is a
personal experience of exposing to the truth. Realism never denies of
truth but mostly believes in them.
Humanism is another philosophical perspective which centered on
humans as having a free will to do what he wants although it is coupled
with moral conscience to guide his reasons of doing a particular activity.
Experimentalism is one philosophy that allows human to discover
the truth by trying it through experiments and values and the result of it
is advantageous to him as a person whatever role he takes in life. The
human is viewed to be inquisitive and test his ability to achieve truth
through experimentation. The facets of experimentation is seen in many
individuals today especially the new generation. They tend to try out on
different opportunities before settling to what gives him/her comfort and
contentment. Sometimes, they are misunderstood by senior society but at
the end of the day, this generations now believe that at least in one
moment they tried things out through experimentation.
3. B. The Different Schools of Philosophy which Affects Education
Pragmatism is a supplementary idea of experimentalism. It is
believed that to derive a truth or knowledge, it has to be tested to prove
its worth. The process of pragmatists to believe in knowledge is very
scientific because it undergoes formal investigation of a particular
situations.
Scholasticism is very religious and spiritual because it believe that
some truth cannot be explained through experience but rather can be felt
by acquiring spiritual gifts like gift of wisdom. Most believers of faith
have this kind of philosophy wherein they believe in what they have not
seen but they felt the presence of what they believe in. It also believes in
internal life, that is why behaviors should be refined while alive so that
when time comes when they are called for by the Divine being, their
souls are prepared. In short, there should be total formation of the
person’s character according to what is dictated by the law of God.
Progressivism is relative to pragmatism wherein the learning is
based on self-activity and gather this knowledge to behave according to
the corresponding result after an experience.
Existentialism believes in the idea that some things really exist
whether we like it or not. The belief on having God even without seeing
it but still believes because there are things in life that need not seen but
felt. Feelings are given more importance than what could be seen as
reality. It is very hard to convince humans to believe in something they
have not seen but uniquely believing in something they just magically
feel and gives them full satisfaction and contentment.
