This document discusses the diversity of plant life and classifications. It outlines the four major groups of plants: Bryophytes, Pterophytes, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms. Bryophytes are non-vascular and include mosses. Pterophytes are vascular and include ferns. Gymnosperms are also vascular but reproduce without water and include conifers and cycads. Angiosperms are flowering plants that bear fruits containing enclosed seeds, including both monocots and dicots. The document provides examples and characteristics of each group.
2. PLANT CLASSIFICATION
PHYLOGENETIC TREE- It is a
tree like diagram that shows evolutionary
relationship between species based on
similarities and differences .
5. Bryophtes
Example : Moss tree
Non-vascular- do not contain vascular tissues xylem and phloem
No true roots, leaves or stem
Need water to reproduce
Dominant gametophyte generation
7. PTEROPHYTES
Example: Fern plant
• Vascular plant-contains vascular tissues such as xylem and phloem.
• Has true roots, leaves and stem
• Rely on water for reproduction
• Dominant sporophyte generation
9. GYMNOSPERMS
Example: Conifers , cycads
Vascular plant
Have true roots , leaves and stem
Do not need water to reproduce
Produce pollen grain and naked seeds
10. ANGIOSPERMS
Example: sunflower, apple etc.
• Angiosperms includes all flowering plants bearing fruits with enclosed
seeds
• flowers can be : monocotyledon or dicotyledonous.
11. FRUITS
• Fertilization takes place within the ovule
• Ovary matures and contains seeds
• The ovary wall protects the seeds
12. FLOWERS
Consist of modified leaves arranged in four whorls
• carlyx
• corolla
• stamen
• carpels
Carlyx and corolla are reffered to as perianth
