We Must Protect The Rainforest
Did you know that before threats from humans, the rainforests covered almost 15% of the earth? Now rainforests only cover 6% of the earth around
the world. I believe we should protect the rainforest because they provide habitats and food for lots of species, their trees help prevent climate change,
it helps the inhabitants of the rainforest survive, and it provides natural medicines around the world.
As I said, rainforests provide natural medicines, food, and habitats for lots of species. The rainforest provides everyday things like avocados,
cashews, guavas, black pepper, coconuts, figs, citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, bananas, corn, yams, cloves, vanilla, and chocolate. Andrew
Einspruch, author of, "Rainforest Habitats," states in the book, "80% of what people eat in the developed world first came from a rainforest
somewhere." and Rainforest Foundation states that, "About 1.2 billion people in the world rely on the rainforest for their survival." This shows how
much the Rainforests are important to people around the world. Other than food from the rainforest, you also get many natural medicines to help with
sicknesses and diseases. 90% of known diseases can be treated with prescription drugs from nature, and in the book, "Rainforest Habitats," it states, "In
1991, researchers found a substance in twigs of a particular Malaysian gum tree that blocked the spread of the AIDS virus in human cells. A team of

The Yaak Valley Of Northern Montana
The Yaak Valley of northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the continental United States. It has cores of roadless wilderness that
have been untouched by human activity and I believe that they should remain as such. The biodiverse ecosystem of the Yaak Valley benefits its human
and non–human inhabitants and we should protect it from the detrimental effects of human activities, especially the violent changes caused by large
timber companies and their practice of clear–cut logging. There are sustainable and pragmatic solutions that would address both human needs and
protecting the biodiverse ecosystem.
The Yaak Valley of Northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse areas of untouched wilderness in the contiguous United States. This is due in large
part to its geographical position between the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the dry and mountainous Northern Rockies. According
to the Yaak ValleyForest Council, the valley is home to a variety of rare species including but not limited to: inland redband rainbow trout, bull trout,
wolverine, lynx, fisher, coeur d 'alene salamander, great gray owl, westslope cutthroat trout, flammulated owl, short–head sculpin, boreal owl, peregrine
falcon, wavy moonwort, kidney–leaved violet, bog birch, and Grizzly Bears (About The Yaak, 2015). The Yaak Valley holds a uniquebiodiversity and
supports a rich and thriving ecosystem. Once this biodiversity is lost, we could not recover this ecosystem and

Pine Forests Of The Colorado Plateau
Ponderosa pine forests of the Colorado Plateau cover a large portion of the higher mesas and mountains from elevations of 6000 to approximately 8000
feet. They often form almost pure stands encompassing tens of thousands of acres at elevations above 6500 feet in the southern area. Located southwest
of Flagstaff to the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, the Mogollon Rim comprises the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau in Arizona. The
escarpment reaches close to 200 miles across central Arizona, with an average elevation of approximately 7000 feet. It contains the largest ponderosa
pine forest in the United States.
The three–needled Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum) is the prevalent form of pine throughout the Colorado Plateau.
Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) is commonly associated with the ponderosa pine at lower elevations as well as the New Mexico locust (Robina
neomexicana). At higher elevations it shares habitat with southwestern white pine (Pinus strobiformis), Rocky Mountain white fir (Abies concolor var.
concolor), Rocky Mountain Douglas–fir, (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca), and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides). Understory plants which are
commonly found in these forests include grasses such as mountain muhly and Arizona fescue, forbs such as lupine, as well as apache plume,
buckbrush, currant, and cliffrose.

Green Forest Is Easy On The Eye
Green forest is easy on the eye, it breaks the harshness of roads and buildings and adds interest to farmland and mountain slopes. In its sanctuary
birdsong and air currents play with your auditory senses and aroma 's of nectar, decayed logs and leaves fill the air.
After a long absence from New Zealand, I decided to reacquaint myself with the types of forests found in the Land of the Long White cloud. In this
article, I have based the forest communities on the categories from The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network: Beech Forest, Podocarp/broadleaf
and Kauri Podocarp/broadleaf.
An introduction
New Zealand is in a temperate zone, located between the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of Capricorn. It is also in the path of the roaring forties, a
strong westerly wind circling the globe, between the latitudes of forty and fifty degrees. Etched by fiords, mountain ranges, volcanoes, plains, plateaus
and just over 15,000 kilometres of coastline, it shapes a diverse landscape.
Over time, plants have evolved and adapted to this landscape and climate. Today there are 2,418 native species of forest plants, which includes ferns
and grasses. Native mosses, liverworts, hornworts and lichens make up approximately another 3,480 plants. Most plants are evergreen with about (still
counting) 28 deciduous species.

Efforts for Forest Conservation
Today forest loss due to conversion into to other land use has reached a dangerous level. Recent study conducted by the researchers from the
University of Maryland, the State University of New York, Google, the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Research Center, and South Dakota State
University shows that during 2000–2012, the world forest was lost with approximately 2.3 million square kilometers per year. Particularly in Indonesia,
they said that deforestation rate increases from 10,000 square kilometers in 2000–2003 to 20,000 square kilometers in 2011–2012. As stated by
XXXXX ( ) that forest essentially has role in regulating the water,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,. In other word, Forest loss can lead to variety of devastating impacts
such as floods, droughts, and landslides. These trends tend to be more awful in the future unless appropriate actions. This essay will describe the
implication, identify the main causes, and suggest solutions.
The impact of forest conversion involves ecology and humanity. The World Wildlife Foundation indicates that deforestation has negative effects on
biodiversity, the climate, and people. Furthermore, Riesco (2005) said that forest loss can have significant direct and indirect impacts on human health.
In addition, she said that:
"forest loss can contribute directly to the severity of these health problems through disruption of the water cycle and increased soil erosion, as well as
indirectly though very significant – through its effects on

Forests Are Very Important For The Environment
Intro:
Forests are very important for the environment. The importance of forests cannot be underestimated. We depend on forests for our survival, from
the air we breathe to the wood we use. Forests also provide a habitat for a vast array of plants and animals, many of which are still undiscovered.
They also supply the oxygen we need to survive. Forests are a home to many endangered species but forests are also endangered due to these species.
For example the red deer eats just about any plant that they can reach, therefore is a threat to forests and saplings. Any of the forest trees that thrive in
mature forests cannot survive on bare, exposed sites. In the forest, they are protected from wind, desiccation (drying out) and the extremes of
temperature. Forests start off as young trees (also known as saplings). They then grow and develop into forests. Many physical and biological
components influence forest trees. Individual sapling and tree growth and vigor are determined by a variety of physiological and external effects,
such as age, available light, water, and nutrients. Since tree crowns are a component of forest ecosystem structure, they directly affect the composition,
processes, and vigor of the understory plant and animal components of the forest. The height of the crown reflects the general health of the tree
therefore would need to be tall in order for the tree to survive. There are a number of forest restoration groups who are helping to restore native forests

Effects Of Pollution And Environmental Degradation
Pollution and Environmental Degradation are things that the large majority of humans contributes to some small or large way on the daily.
Whether it is our mode of transportation, throwing a piece of trash on the ground, buying products made from trees, and to be perfectly honest the
concentration in which we live, by which I mean the proximity of the average residents in which we reside. These all seem like regular everyday
things that are just normal. But in the past things like these were so beyond the norm that they would seem alien and impossible. The first matter
that I pointed out, our mode of transportation, differs from person to person. There are those that have decided to either not use any fossil fuel
burning vehicular modes of transportation, such as walking and riding bikes; while others have decided to greatly decrease their ecological
footprint by using various forms of carpooling, whether it being literal carpooling with friends or coworkers, or taking modes of mass transportation
such as buses and "subways" or underground railways. According to a survey 91% of people drive to work in their personal vehicles; and 204
million personal vehicles are regularly used. And though not everyone throws their trash directly on to the ground, and most that do don't do it
completely intentionally. I do have to say that a large amount of Americans do not take the time to make sure that their trash and garbage is disposed
of properly. Some do not invest in having both

Is the construction project ruining the green areas or pathways? Does it require any roads to be narrowed disturbing the smooth flow of the traffic?
Does the project jeopardize any park, playground or any such place of socializing and entertainment? These are some of the questions which must be
there in minds of the managers who are given the responsibility of constructing the project. how much the contractors compromise on their initial
design and plan for the project, and how much they are going to be careful about not resulting in environmental pollution as well as not to violate an of

On demolition of this farm house, the birds will become homeless and the oxygen production will be decreased (Plant, 2004). This is a direct
impact of this construction project on the environment. It must be kept in mind that we are only considering the environmental factor and impacts
here and we do not have to mention the property rights of the owner of the farm house, has he been adequately compensated and dealt with before
the start of this project. We just assume that the owner of the farm house has been dealt with considering all his rights and he is agreed to give
away the rights and authority of this farm house to the contractors of the new project. The demolition will not only cause damage to the greenery of
the neighborhood but also will enhance the pollution in the form of dust and noise. This will impact the neighbors of the housing complex which is
only one thousand feet away from this project's site. The first activity which is to be expected to be done first is the clearance of vegetation which is
a direct damage to the environment. The agricultural value and output of this land will be multiplied with zero once the vegetations will be cleared of
the surface. 200 acre of the farm land which this project has bought for the current project is a vast land and clear vegetation from it will damage not
only the view from the site but also will be a decrease in economy. The environmental plan must have something arranged for the

Settlers In The New World Essay
A Reflection of Settlers in the New World In the event of pursuing freedom, exploration, and goals, several people journeyed a crossed the shores, and
oceans, to discover a land with plenty of provisions. Meanwhile, natural supplies were bountiful, in a woody environment, with a generous amount of
land inhabited by both wildlife and humans. According to Perkins, "from small coastal footholds, the land stretched before the newcomers in majesty
and mystery, while the inhabitants they met told of wonders yet unseen – of towering peaks and mighty rivers, of shifting sands and ancient cities, in a
continent of unimaginable size, more than half of it covered by forest of fabulous density" (p.2). As of today, this land is identified as America, where...

De Crevecoeur's "Letters from an American Farmer" suggest that "there is no wonder that this country has so many charms, and a traveler in Europe

The Green Winged Macaw, scientific name Ara Chloroptera, is also commonly known as the Maroon Macaw or Red and Green Macaw. They are
second only in size to the Hyacinth Macaw. The Green Wing is often confused with the Scarlet because of all the red coloring but can easily be told
apart by looking at their backs. The Green Wing has a green band of color while the Scarlet has a yellow band of color across its back.
The Green Wing is one of the most colorful Macaws, bright red is the dominant color while the feathers near the body are dark red and turn green in
the middle of the wing and the tips are lined in a bluish color. The tail is also a dark red with bluish tips. Their feet are dark grey and the iris is a pale

Deforestation Essay
Deforestation
Thesis:
Deforestation is one of the most significant issues of our time; considerable measures must be taken to prevent further pillaging of our unique forest
resource.
Ninety percent of the earth's trees between three and four hundred years old have been cut down. The remaining ten percent is all we will ever have
(Gallant, 97). The definition of deforestation by the Random House Dictionary of the English Language is "to divest or clear of forests or trees."

With new technology such as satellites systems, low altitude photography and side looking radar scientists now figure that the world is losing about
twenty million hectares of tropical forests annually. It has been suggested that the high deforestation rates are caused partially by the fact that the new
surveys are more accurate and thus reveal old deforestation rates that were miscalculated with previous methods (Westoby, 202). At first there was
concern only among foresters about deforestation but now the public has created organizations such as Green Peace to facilitate increased awareness
and reduce deforestation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) has worked mainly within the forestry community to find new and better
ways to manage the forests. In 1985 there was the introduction of the Tropical Forestry Action Plan or T.F.A.P. This plan involved the F.A.O, United
Nations, World Bank, other developmental agencies, and several other multi–national government organizations; together they developed a new
strategy. More than sixty countries have decided to prepare national forestry action plans to manage their forests (Gallant, 381). Tropical deforestation
has various direct causes: permanent conversion of forests to agricultural land, logging, demand for fuel–wood, forest fires and drought. Slash and burn
clearing is the single greatest cause of tropical rain forest destruction world wide. Air

Coal Mining Pros And Cons
NorthMet Mining Project
Polymet Mining is a mining industry that is proposing to create Minnesota's first sulfide mine. The company is wanting to create an open pit copper
and nickel mine that is located north of Hoyt Lakes in the Superior National Forest (BC Hydro). They plan to call this project the NorthMet Mining
Project. There is a dire need for nickel and copper in America, and building this mine will help obtain these resources. There are many pros and cons to
the mine being built in one of Minnesota's National Forests. The building of this mine would help obtain the necessary resources that the United States
is lacking, but will also destroy the natural state of the Superior National Forest and many habitats of the animals living within the forest. In my
opinion, I do not think that building this mine will benefit the United States because of all the damage to the natural land that it will cause. Contrary to
iron mines, sulfur mines release sulfuric acid when water comes in contact with tailings or other mining wastes during the mining process. Sulfuric acid

Creating this mine will create 1000 permanent jobs and many others will be employed to construct this mine (BC Hydro). While creating jobs for
people is a benefit to this project, it still does not amount to the amount of other living things that will lose their home in order for the mining to take
place. Another small benefit to the mine would be the resources that we can obtain from this region ("Investing in our region and state for substantial
economic returns"). While mining in this area would create revenue for PolyMet, there are plenty of other areas that they could mine that would not
destroy the land and habitats of many northern Minnesotan species. There are benefits to building the mine in this location, but the number of
consequences that come from mining outweigh the

Deforestation And Its Effects On Deforestation
Rainforests are found typically in tropical areas with a constant heavy rainfall in its biodiversity. "When areas of rainforests are destroyed, it's not just
the trees that disappear." It's time for the government to take action on deforestation. Rainforests are an important location for indigenous people and
animals because that's where their home belongs. Yet the government and organizations ignore those facts and just demolish their homes in order to
gain a new location for productions. It's a topic that's constantly debated in politics and society should take a recognition on what's happening in
deforestation. More than half of the world's rainforests are destroyed and is in danger by humans, therefore, the government shouldn't allow
deforestation anymore in order to save the remaining rainforests in the environment because it affects habitats, species, and indigenous people. Loss of
habitats is an evident threat in the rainforest as the facilities continue to form new funds to buildings and resources. In deforestation, people can profit
and revenue on the resources to inhibit for society to use. They profit on the resources they sell to other countries after they obtain the sources they
received from the rainforests. Rather than the facilities looking at a profit for their own benefits, the destruction of the land will cause the species to
never return back nor will it provide shelter for them in their adapting habitat. Even if deforestation is to distribute goods

What Is The Role Of Deforestation In The Amazon Rainforest
ABSTRACT One in ten species in the world lives in the Amazon, which makes it the most biodiverse tropical rainforest in the world. This great
expanse of rainforest harbors about half of all species on Earth. As large areas of this tropical forest are cleared by deforestation, entire species are
vanishing, many of them unknown. The dense tropical forests also hold a large amount of carbon that is being released into the atmosphere because of
deforestation. Although deforestation in the tropics is rapid and widespread, some people are making an increasing effort to mitigate potential disaster.
INTRODUCTION
The Amazon rainforest represents over half of our planets remaining rainforest. This rainforest encompasses the largest and most biodiverse region of
tropical rainforest in the world. This expanse of forest includes 5,500,000 km2–covered rainforest with 16,000 species of tree (Hubbell, 2008). The
Amazon rainforest is comprised of nine countries including Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French

The Arc of Deforestation
The main area of forest loss in both the 1990s and the 2000s was in the so–called 'arc of deforestation', which is the highest point of deforestation in the
Brazilian Amazon. In 2002, approximately 47 percent of the Brazilian Amazon was under some sort of human pressure. This pressure was due to either
human settlements (19 percent) or in areas subject to emerging human pressure (28 percent). These areas under pressure were found mainly along
official roads in the so–called "arc of deforestation" (Davin, 2010).

Environmental Pollution
Introduction: Our planet relies on vegetation as a source of oxygen and cutting it down takes away that source. This creates an unstable balance where
civilization needs to rely on something else for that missing part of oxygen. To what extent should humans prevent deforestation in major forests
worldwide? Forests cover about 30% of our entire planet and scientists are predicting that within the next 50–100 years, deforestation will cause all
non–protected forests to be cut down (National Geographic). As stated by the NASA Earth Observatory author and editor Rachel Lindsey, "In the
Amazon alone, scientists estimate that the trees contain more carbon than ten years of human produced greenhouse gases" (Lindsey). As people cut
down trees on a daily basis, the carbon that is held in the tree is released into the atmosphere, adding to the already present global warming problem. As
the trees are cleared, people tend to replace this previously forested area with pastures and fields to grow crops on. This is not only bad for the
environment, it additionally creates a hotter climate. Meanwhile, Science News author and previous writer/editor for the Chicago Adler Planetarium
Janet Raloff shows readers that nitrous oxide has a large impact on the ozone of our planet, contributing to global warming and climate change. The
ozone absorbs most of the radiation coming from the sun to the earth. As trees are cut down, it increases the rate of nitrous oxide released into the
atmosphere

Deforestation In Hispaniola
Studies show that tropical forests absorb almost two billion tons of carbon each year, equivalent to 1/5th of the world's carbon emissions, by storing
it in their bark, leaves and soil. However, an equivalent amount is lost through logging, clearing of land for grazing, and growing biofuel crops such
as palm oil, soya bean and sugar. Peat fires in forests add significantly to the greenhouse gas emissions. (Greenhouse, 2014) For decades, millions of
hectares of forest have been cleared with various motives in mind. Two countries that have suffered greatly are Haiti, located on the island of
Hispaniola in the Caribbean, and Indonesia, an archipelago island country in Southeast Asia. This report will discuss the omnipresent environmental

environmental problems have been among the roots of Haiti's social, economic and even political crises. Haiti is catastrophically deforested, topsoil
has been eroded, and there are zones of galloping desertification. Beginning in about 1954, concessionaires stepped up their logging operations, in
response to Port–au–Prince's intensified demand for charcoal, thus accelerating deforestation, which had already become a problem because of
environmentally unsound agricultural practices, rapid population growth, and increased competition over scarce land. (Williams,

The Evolutionary Process Of Pollination Of Flowers
Tropical rainforests are a curious world filled with wonder. Tropical Nature: Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South America has
opened my eyes to another world that I had not paid much attention to. Adrian Forsyth and Ken Miyata introduced a new world of wonder filled with
so much diversity. Ecology and evolution go hand and hand, and the rainforest–a beautiful ecosystem driven by the climate [biome]–is a phenomenal
example as hot spot for evolution. From the humidity, the high temperatures, the canopy of the trees, and so much more. Diversity thrives in this
environment, and it 's obvious from the variety of species that have been found inhabiting such areas. Organisms depend on their communities, they
depend on the interspecific relationships they develop; from predation (herbivory, carnivores, etc.), mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism. Without
each other, they could not survive, and in some cases they even evolve with one another. The evolutionary process of pollination of flowers provides
some examples of this. Tropical plants are dioecious, which translates to having separate male and female plants. Tropical plants cannot rely on the
traditional wind pollination method due to the lack of wind and lack of targets nearby; therefore, they cannot pollinate themselves or plants of the same
sex. Instead, they often look towards the mobile organisms that surround them. To do this, they 've evolved ways to attract them; either provide them

"Deforestation" is the lasting devastation of timberlands with a specific end goal to make the area accessible for different uses; what's more, as

Inevitably the impact could reach out outside the locale, influencing vital rural zones and different watersheds. At the 1998 worldwide atmosphere

therefore, numerous individuals trust that to counter deforestation, individuals essentially need to plant more trees and deal with the earth; on the other

Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(REDD) Program – Equity and Effectiveness
Introduction
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is a program that, like its name suggests, has the main objective of reducing
the emission levels of green–house gases from land uses, through incentives in developing countries. The program includes measures related to
conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forests carbon stocks (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
2008).
It is well known that climate change is one of the most controversial environmental issues that has been discussed, and in the climate change picture
REDD is a topic which contains diverse points and dimensions that request attention. The REDD program includes goals that are seen by many people
how extremely important and essential ones to address the climate problem, whereas other environmentalists may put in doubt its efficiency and
feasibility. Given its potential importance to the global climate and its complexity, it is necessary consider biophysical, social and economic magnitudes
of REDD.
REDD is an initiative with a variety of features. It does not involve only local management and impacts, but rather does include a global effort and
integration of public and private sectors. It is important to think about all the management levels, all impacts and consequences of the program, risks,
applicability, benefit and cost and so

Rainforests Have Been Declining Rapidly over the Last Few...
Rainforests have been declining rapidly over the last few decades. There are various factors responsible for this decline, resulting in serious impacts
on the environment and the economy. Critically discuss the causes of deforestation and solutions to it. Deforestation is the cutting down of a large
area of trees and the destruction of forests by people. Forests are what we call an exhaustible resource, one which can be used up if it is not used
carefully. Over the last few decades, deforestation has threatened the rainforests with total extinction. To understand why deforestation is such an
important issue, you first have to understand why trees matter. Trees improve in many ways the life of all species, including the human race.... Show

In his concept, Adam Smith explains that in a free market no regulation of any type would be needed to ensure that the mutually beneficial exchange of
goods and services can take place, since the "invisible hand" would guide market participants to trade in the most mutually beneficial manner.

Many private agents, according to these studies, have no interest in maintaining the forest's beauty and biodiversity, as services provided by forests are
benefits that cannot be priced, so are not profit–making.
Another factor precipitating deforestation appears to be poverty. Commonly held views argue that "high discount rates" received by poor countries
are a cause of deforestation (The World Bank Forestry Policy 1991, Pearce and Watford 1993.). Because forests imply long gestation; private agents,
particularly from the poorest countries, value what they can get immediately from forests more than what they can get in the future. But in 1999,
Ekbom and Bojo challenged those views in a World Bank examination by showing that poverty does not necessarily lead to shorter time horizons and
an increased rate of environmental degradation. They show how in fact the rural poor have used resources in a conservationist manner over a long
period spanning centuries. Ostrom (1990), one of the various analysts they quoted, established a number of conditions that would lead to long term use
of common resources despite their short–time

Deforestation Of Latin American Forest
Deforestation presents in an abundance of ways, including fires, clear–cutting for agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for
timber, and degradation due to climate change. The foremost reason of deforestation in Latin America is the requirement for food, fuel, shelter, and
foreign exchange. Year on year, a space of tropicalforest the size of Great Britain is "converted" from an area equal to the size of Europe. Ever since
1950, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), half of the world 's forests have disappeared. "Latin America has lost 37
percent of its tropical forests," says the FAO. As more and more of Latin American forest are degraded, more and more detrimental effects are being
seen. Deforestation is changing a number of resources for tribal groups, altering their way of life, temperatures are increasing at a dangerous rate
because of a buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, habitats and species such as plants and wildlife are being annexed due to the destructive
effects of deforestation. Deforestation is inarguably helpful to supplying money to countries that sell the products from the forest, but huge wealth
being generated from the forests comes with large–scale environmental and social costs. The local residences are not benefitting and the funds are
being siphoned out of the region.

Pros And Cons Of Rf-Deforestation
Ra is equal to the total revenues obtained from the harvest (paya) minus the costs on labour (wla), capital (qka), and transportation (vad) –Note that the
distance is included in the transportation costs. In the case without and alternative use, which ensure keeping the forest stand, the agricultural frontier
expands until the distance where Ra equals zero. Transportation costs may be too high at this point. Thus, to reach markets is too costly and
deforestation stops.
The relation Rf–deforestation is exactly the opposite of the relation Ra–deforestation: the higher the Rf, the lower the deforestation. Rents coming from
forest activities vary with respect to the aggregation level. At the local level, forest rents include the same variables agricultural rents do. However, at
bigger aggregation levels, such as regional/national, or global, other forest ES are included. Provision costs at such level are zero since they are
provided directly by the forest ecosystem.
To achieve forest conservation requires making the forests profitable enough to compete with agricultural activities. This appears as an obvious
conclusion of this model. To find the way to incorporate local and global forest services, which naturally do not belong to any market, into the agent's
decisions (those who will decide whether cutting down the forest or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Commodification, which is necessary for establishing MES, is not possible since ES cannot be isolated because they come from complex ecosystem

Deforestation In America's Rainforests
Brazil's rainforests and America's rainforests are great examples of the negative effect that deforestation has on these specific areas. One of the rising
challenges in our rapidly growing world is the destruction of rainforests and how it is slowly ruining the world that we live in. Deforestation has a lot
of destructive impacts on the environment that is surrounding us, one of the most important being its effect on the climate. The fast rise in the world's
population, calling for high demand of resources, is only hastening the effects of deforestation, which can hopefully be put an end to through the
enforcement of a handful of simple, key, and sustainable solutions. The fast rise in the world's population is one of the many major causes of
deforestation. Since the population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone has been told to do this, but I don't think everyone sees the importance of recycling. Sure, a lot of people recycle, but there are a lot that
don't. Recycling has many benefits, but the major benefit is less destruction of forests. Again, the rising population calls for many products that are
made from trees, mainly paper. Everybody in the world uses paper, whether it be in the form of books, pencils, toilet paper, towels, and even shoes.
All these paper products, and more, are a direct result of deforestation, for the trees are taken down and turned into these products. Say you have a
whole box of school papers that you don't need anymore, and you want to throw them in the trash. Instead of throwing it in the trash, you should
recycle it. When you recycle it, the paper goes to a factory, which adds other products to it, melts it down, and molds it into other products. This
process can eventually rule out the need for deforestation, reducing the effects of climate change. Clearly, recycling is one of the many sustainable
solutions that can hopefully stop

Deforestation Mitigation Essay
Deforestation Mitigation Strategies
Tropical rainforests cover approximately thirty percent of the earth's land area, around 2.5 million square miles, the size of the lower 48 states,
despite the fact 80,000 acres (32,000) hectares are destroyed per day for economic reasons. Tropical rainforests are biodiversity hotspots. Rainforests
are carbon sinks absorbing about half the carbon dioxide humans release into the atmosphere. Continued deforestation will affect the entire world with
the ecological ramifications of species extinction, loss of carbon sinks, and loss of renewable resources. Deforestation reduces the availability of
renewable resources like medicinal plants, timber, nuts and fruit, and indigenous game. Over time, loss of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Brosimum Alicastrum Plan.
The Brosimum Alicastrum is a large rainforest tree native to tropical regions and known as the Maya Nut tree. The tree grows to 130 feet, grows
naturally in rainforest soils, can produce an average of 400 pounds of 100% organic nuts a year and have more vital nutrients than foods grown on
farmed soils. Other than being one of the largest and fastest growing trees of the rainforest it produces a fruit high in protein, calcium, fiber, iron and
vitamins A, E, C, and B. The nut can be prepared to taste like chocolate, coffee, or even mashed potatoes (The Equilibrium Fund, 2010). If dried and
ground into flour can be used to make cakes, cookies, cereal. The leaves of the trees are high in nutrients that can be used for cattle fodder (Cable
News Network, 2009).
The nut was used in the ancient Mayan culture as food stable with special cultivated orchards designed specifically for this tree. Over the centuries this
nut was forgotten. People living in the in the areas where the Maya Nut tree now flourishes, don't know about the fruit itself. Environmentally, this is
the ideal tree to use for reforestation; fast growing, producing food, creating an earning income for the individual farmer while protecting watersheds,
preventing erosion, helping with carbon

The Role Of Tropical Rainforest And Water Cycle
The role of tropical rainforest in water cycle
The tropical rainforest plays a significant role in regulating the water cycle on earth, through transpiration and evaporation process. Transpiration is the
water vapour loss from plants through stomata, and evaporation is the water loss from all other part of plants but leaves and other living things in the
forest. Evapotranspiration are the accumulation of transpiration and evaporation in the forest. During transpiration, trees suck water from soil through
the root system and transport the water to leaves through xylem, and then release the water to the air through stomata. Transpiration happens
simultaneously with photosynthesis.
The soil loss water due to evapotranspiration process and the water level will be recharged through precipitation. In the tropical rainforest,
precipitation rate are high due to high evapotranspiration rate. High evapotranspiration rate plays a significant role in cloud formation above the
rainforest area and its surroundings. Water vapour that is released into the air will be condensed as it moves to a higher altitude. The condensed water
vapour form the clouds above the forest. The more water vapour being released into the air, the more clouds would be formed.

Monticello: Jefferson’s Dream Essay
Monticello: Jefferson's Dream
"Monticello", the Italian word for little mountain is the appropriate wording for Thomas Jefferson's dream home. He picked out the site for such a
fabled home as a young boy. At eight hundred and sixty–five feet tall, Jefferson truly does have his little mountain on which to live. Thomas Jefferson
built his chalet in an abnormal spot in accordance with the times. Most if not all the people in the seventeen hundreds built their homes in the low
lands or near rivers. On the contrary Thomas Jefferson was an abnormal man as that he was a statesman, a designer, a scholar, a astronomer, a
philosopher, and lawyer.

Jefferson is the first American who has consulted the fine arts to know how he should shelter himself from the weather. Not only was Jefferson the
architect but in many cases, he was the general contractor.
He was surely a tradesman too as in he taught his slaves and free men bricklaying, stonecutting, carpentry, cabinetmaking, and ironmongering.
Jefferson's genius is easily seen and should be researched and studied.
Jefferson was also the second vice president and the third president of the United States of America. There is a history in the United States of holding
whatever the Presidents have and do as national treasures. This includes the building in which they were born, grew up in, lived in, and died in. It
seems that the popularity and success of the President is also a variable in the public's eye. Under this assumption, Monticello would also be studied
since it is the place where one of the greatest Presidents of all time lived and died.
Monticello is considered one of the greatest architectural feats for the time in which it was built. Thomas Jefferson built a home that was years
beyond its time. He included sunlights to let in the sun for extra lighting. Jefferson also was one of the first people to go away from the block style
building with a hall down the middle and rooms off to the left and right. He created a central room with a circular path going around the rooms. This is
one of the beginnings of the

Latitudinal Gradient of Species Diversity Essay
Latitudinal Gradient of Species Diversity
The latitudinal gradient in species diversity is one of the most striking patterns in the distribution of organisms on the planet. Simply put, the average
number of species per unit area increases dramatically the closer the area is to the equator, almost entirely regardless of the type of organism being
considered (Pianka, 1994). Researchers investigating the gradient have formulated a wide variety of hypothesis explaining the higher level of species
diversity in the tropics. These include but are not limited to: a greater degree of evolution and radiation in tropical species due to the long and
relatively stable geological history of the area, seasonal climatic stability and/or predictability, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
52). As a result, these unique soils became the "tropical soils" of general usage and were believed to cover most of the tropical region (Sanchez, 1976).
These soils were believed to have formed on ancient parent materials under uniformly hot and humid conditions, and be highly leached, nutrient–poor,
and characterized by laterite (hard iron oxide) deposits which cause the soil to become rock hard upon desiccation (Sanchez, 1976).
Of course, tropical soils are not this uniform. Even if parent materials were essentially homogeneous throughout the tropics, the huge range in
temperature, topography and precipitation regime found within the tropical zone would lead to very different pedogenesis in different areas
(Sanchez, 1976). Furthermore, there are a wide variety of parent materials found in the tropics. Some soils are formed on the ancient Brazilian and
Guianan Shields, some on recently exposed or deposited parent materials, and some on volcanic ash (Van Wambecke and Dudal). The only
characteristic all tropical soils share by definition is that they experience a temperature change of less than 5 C during the course of the year (Sanchez,
1976). While it is true that temperature effects pedogenic processes, it can hardly be argued that this similarity would outweigh all the differences
cited above, so we must assume that there is a significant degree of variability among tropical soils.

Persuasive Essay On Deforestation
Mahatma Gandhi once stated, "What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one
another". Excessive deforestation is believed to be one of the leading causes of climate change and habitat loss in the world. Daniel Quinn, an
American writer claims that "...man was innocent until he discovered the difference between good and evil. When he was no longer oblivious of that
knowledge, he became a fallen creature... We are destroying the world because we are, in a very literal and deliberate way, at war with it."
Deforestation goes even farther than prove what Quinn stated is correct. We are destroying our planet with diminished forests, mass animalextinction,
and climate change; all because of deforestation.
Rainforests, forests, and jungles cover a massive part of our Earth. Every day, trees are being cut down. Henceforth, the trees carbon dioxide is being
released back into the air. According to Climate Change, Deforestation, and the Fate of the Amazon, published by the non–profit organization American
Association for the Advancement of Science, "Amazonian forests have a substantial influence on regional and global climates. Hence, their removal
by deforestation can itself be a driver of climate change and a positive feedback on externally forced climate change". If the number of deforested lands
rises, our atmosphere will be full of carbon. Climateandweather.net concurs, "It is estimated that more than 1.5

Life In Tropical Rainforests In The Tropical Rainforests
We may not realize it but many of our everyday necessities' come from all sorts of things that live in nature. Whether it's paper or beauty products,
we rely on nature for certain things we need and use. What we also may not realize is the demands for certain necessities are the reason why all
life within nature decreases. This is primarily focused on tropical rainforests. Over the years we have slowly decreased life within them. We have
even cut down parts or entire rainforests to make space for certain facilities we use. This is bad for us and for all life within rainforests. We are
destroying the homes of many plants and wild life as well as the air that we breath. If we continue to harvest parts of rainforests it could destroy all the
life that inhabits it forever. Rainforests are in Brazil, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands and West Africa. During the day, their average temperature
within them is eighty–eight degrees Fahrenheit. Once it gets to be later in the evening, the temperature decreases to an average of seventy–two degrees
Fahrenheit. At one point, they covered about fourteen percent of the earth's surface. After years of them being harvested, currently they now only
cover roughly six percent of the earth's surface. They receive anywhere from one hundred and sixty to four hundred inches of rain a year. Rain itself
occurs about two hundred and fifty days a year. "The rainforest is one of the earth's best recyclers, because seventy–five percent of the water

thirty individuals that made the colossal journey. By the innovation of the double canoe it allowed them to travel a great distance to an island where they
could establish a brilliant civilization. There civilization was based on being the best one can be which fostered intense competition between the

In order to advance the islander's society, they began cutting down the vegetation and wooded areas of the island. They found this necessary because
by cutting down the trees it allowed for more space for agriculture that the inhabitants needed to satisfy the flourishing population. It was also
necessary because the trees were used for canoes, heating, houses, cooking and poles. The greatest abuse of the wooded area came from the need to
move the stone statues from the quarry to different sites on the island. Islanders used the tree trunks as rollers since they had to rely on human power to
move them. Excessive use of wooded areas resulted in over six hundred large stone statues being made and most of the forest disappearing by the
1600s. The disappearance of the wooded areas brought about great changes to the islander's way of life. One change was that the islanders could no
longer build houses out of wood and instead had to find new places to live. They began living in shelters dug out from the hillside and making reed
huts made from the remaining vegetation that grew near the water. The lack of woodlands brought an end to long journeys since the canoes were
made of wood. Only reed boats were a possibility that could only travel a short distance. Gathering food from the sea was made harder too. Since nets
for fishing were made from the mulberry tree that was no longer available. The diminishing resources resulted

from the destruction of the rainforests across the world. There has been dramatic deforestation across the world for some time now and many of the

For example, the rate of destruction of the Amazonian rainforest increased by 40% between 2001 and 2002. More than 25,000 sq km were cleared in
a year, mainly for farming. That represents an area of land larger than Belgium. The Amazon is home to up to 30% of the world's animal and plant
life. Trees also convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, thereby playing a major part in reducing pollution and controlling climate change caused by excess
greenhouse gases.
The tropical rainforest of the Amazon Basin is the largest area of tropical rainforest in the world. Different countries exploit the forest for different uses
and we shall go into these causes now.
One of the major purposes for the clearing of the forest is for housing. These happens in countries where the population is growing rapidly, e.g.
Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In addition, more houses are built in deforested areas to resettle people from crowded and heavily urbanised and densely
populated cities in Brazil such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Extensive areas of the tropical rainforest have been cleared to grow pasture for cattle
rearing and to cultivate crops for subsistence and commercial agriculture. Cattle ranching is an important source of farming activity in many

which is evident from the increasing trends of changes in global temperature, precipitation, climate induced hazards/disasters, pest distribution, etc. It is

Case Study 1:
As a part of Bavarian Climate Program (2008–2011), the Bavarian Forest Administration developed extensive maps of the forest areas and developed

We Must Protect The Rainforest

  • 1. We Must Protect The Rainforest Did you know that before threats from humans, the rainforests covered almost 15% of the earth? Now rainforests only cover 6% of the earth around the world. I believe we should protect the rainforest because they provide habitats and food for lots of species, their trees help prevent climate change, it helps the inhabitants of the rainforest survive, and it provides natural medicines around the world. As I said, rainforests provide natural medicines, food, and habitats for lots of species. The rainforest provides everyday things like avocados, cashews, guavas, black pepper, coconuts, figs, citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, bananas, corn, yams, cloves, vanilla, and chocolate. Andrew Einspruch, author of, "Rainforest Habitats," states in the book, "80% of what people eat in the developed world first came from a rainforest somewhere." and Rainforest Foundation states that, "About 1.2 billion people in the world rely on the rainforest for their survival." This shows how much the Rainforests are important to people around the world. Other than food from the rainforest, you also get many natural medicines to help with sicknesses and diseases. 90% of known diseases can be treated with prescription drugs from nature, and in the book, "Rainforest Habitats," it states, "In 1991, researchers found a substance in twigs of a particular Malaysian gum tree that blocked the spread of the AIDS virus in human cells. A team of biologist rushed back to Malaysia to get more, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Yaak Valley Of Northern Montana The Yaak Valley of northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the continental United States. It has cores of roadless wilderness that have been untouched by human activity and I believe that they should remain as such. The biodiverse ecosystem of the Yaak Valley benefits its human and non–human inhabitants and we should protect it from the detrimental effects of human activities, especially the violent changes caused by large timber companies and their practice of clear–cut logging. There are sustainable and pragmatic solutions that would address both human needs and protecting the biodiverse ecosystem. The Yaak Valley of Northern Montana is one of the most biodiverse areas of untouched wilderness in the contiguous United States. This is due in large part to its geographical position between the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest and the dry and mountainous Northern Rockies. According to the Yaak ValleyForest Council, the valley is home to a variety of rare species including but not limited to: inland redband rainbow trout, bull trout, wolverine, lynx, fisher, coeur d 'alene salamander, great gray owl, westslope cutthroat trout, flammulated owl, short–head sculpin, boreal owl, peregrine falcon, wavy moonwort, kidney–leaved violet, bog birch, and Grizzly Bears (About The Yaak, 2015). The Yaak Valley holds a uniquebiodiversity and supports a rich and thriving ecosystem. Once this biodiversity is lost, we could not recover this ecosystem and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Pine Forests Of The Colorado Plateau Ponderosa pine forests of the Colorado Plateau cover a large portion of the higher mesas and mountains from elevations of 6000 to approximately 8000 feet. They often form almost pure stands encompassing tens of thousands of acres at elevations above 6500 feet in the southern area. Located southwest of Flagstaff to the White Mountains of eastern Arizona, the Mogollon Rim comprises the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau in Arizona. The escarpment reaches close to 200 miles across central Arizona, with an average elevation of approximately 7000 feet. It contains the largest ponderosa pine forest in the United States. The three–needled Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum) is the prevalent form of pine throughout the Colorado Plateau. Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) is commonly associated with the ponderosa pine at lower elevations as well as the New Mexico locust (Robina neomexicana). At higher elevations it shares habitat with southwestern white pine (Pinus strobiformis), Rocky Mountain white fir (Abies concolor var. concolor), Rocky Mountain Douglas–fir, (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca), and quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides). Understory plants which are commonly found in these forests include grasses such as mountain muhly and Arizona fescue, forbs such as lupine, as well as apache plume, buckbrush, currant, and cliffrose. a.The disturbance regime known for this ecosystem (citations please) Since the 1930s fire ecology for ponderosa ... • 4. Green Forest Is Easy On The Eye Green forest is easy on the eye, it breaks the harshness of roads and buildings and adds interest to farmland and mountain slopes. In its sanctuary birdsong and air currents play with your auditory senses and aroma 's of nectar, decayed logs and leaves fill the air. After a long absence from New Zealand, I decided to reacquaint myself with the types of forests found in the Land of the Long White cloud. In this article, I have based the forest communities on the categories from The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network: Beech Forest, Podocarp/broadleaf and Kauri Podocarp/broadleaf. An introduction New Zealand is in a temperate zone, located between the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of Capricorn. It is also in the path of the roaring forties, a strong westerly wind circling the globe, between the latitudes of forty and fifty degrees. Etched by fiords, mountain ranges, volcanoes, plains, plateaus and just over 15,000 kilometres of coastline, it shapes a diverse landscape. Over time, plants have evolved and adapted to this landscape and climate. Today there are 2,418 native species of forest plants, which includes ferns and grasses. Native mosses, liverworts, hornworts and lichens make up approximately another 3,480 plants. Most plants are evergreen with about (still counting) 28 deciduous species. Beech Forest "I like how a montane beech forest defines a distinct line across mountain slopes and the excitement you feel when you emerge into the alpine zone". Found on hilly ... • 5. Efforts for Forest Conservation Today forest loss due to conversion into to other land use has reached a dangerous level. Recent study conducted by the researchers from the University of Maryland, the State University of New York, Google, the U.S. Geological Survey, Woods Hole Research Center, and South Dakota State University shows that during 2000–2012, the world forest was lost with approximately 2.3 million square kilometers per year. Particularly in Indonesia, they said that deforestation rate increases from 10,000 square kilometers in 2000–2003 to 20,000 square kilometers in 2011–2012. As stated by XXXXX ( ) that forest essentially has role in regulating the water,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,. In other word, Forest loss can lead to variety of devastating impacts such as floods, droughts, and landslides. These trends tend to be more awful in the future unless appropriate actions. This essay will describe the implication, identify the main causes, and suggest solutions. The impact of forest conversion involves ecology and humanity. The World Wildlife Foundation indicates that deforestation has negative effects on biodiversity, the climate, and people. Furthermore, Riesco (2005) said that forest loss can have significant direct and indirect impacts on human health. In addition, she said that: "forest loss can contribute directly to the severity of these health problems through disruption of the water cycle and increased soil erosion, as well as indirectly though very significant – through its effects on ... • 6. Forests Are Very Important For The Environment Intro: Forests are very important for the environment. The importance of forests cannot be underestimated. We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Any of the forest trees that thrive in mature forests cannot survive on bare, exposed sites. In the forest, they are protected from wind, desiccation (drying out) and the extremes of temperature. Forests start off as young trees (also known as saplings). They then grow and develop into forests. Many physical and biological components influence forest trees. Individual sapling and tree growth and vigor are determined by a variety of physiological and external effects, such as age, available light, water, and nutrients. Since tree crowns are a component of forest ecosystem structure, they directly affect the composition, processes, and vigor of the understory plant and animal components of the forest. The height of the crown reflects the general health of the tree therefore would need to be tall in order for the tree to survive. There are a number of forest restoration groups who are helping to restore native forests ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Effects Of Pollution And Environmental Degradation Pollution and Environmental Degradation are things that the large majority of humans contributes to some small or large way on the daily. Whether it is our mode of transportation, throwing a piece of trash on the ground, buying products made from trees, and to be perfectly honest the concentration in which we live, by which I mean the proximity of the average residents in which we reside. These all seem like regular everyday things that are just normal. But in the past things like these were so beyond the norm that they would seem alien and impossible. The first matter that I pointed out, our mode of transportation, differs from person to person. There are those that have decided to either not use any fossil fuel burning vehicular modes of transportation, such as walking and riding bikes; while others have decided to greatly decrease their ecological footprint by using various forms of carpooling, whether it being literal carpooling with friends or coworkers, or taking modes of mass transportation such as buses and "subways" or underground railways. According to a survey 91% of people drive to work in their personal vehicles; and 204 million personal vehicles are regularly used. And though not everyone throws their trash directly on to the ground, and most that do don't do it completely intentionally. I do have to say that a large amount of Americans do not take the time to make sure that their trash and garbage is disposed of properly. Some do not invest in having both ... • 8. Construction Essay Is the construction project ruining the green areas or pathways? Does it require any roads to be narrowed disturbing the smooth flow of the traffic? Does the project jeopardize any park, playground or any such place of socializing and entertainment? These are some of the questions which must be there in minds of the managers who are given the responsibility of constructing the project. how much the contractors compromise on their initial design and plan for the project, and how much they are going to be careful about not resulting in environmental pollution as well as not to violate an of such rights of the people living in the community. On demolition of this farm house, the birds will become homeless and the oxygen production will be decreased (Plant, 2004). This is a direct impact of this construction project on the environment. It must be kept in mind that we are only considering the environmental factor and impacts here and we do not have to mention the property rights of the owner of the farm house, has he been adequately compensated and dealt with before the start of this project. We just assume that the owner of the farm house has been dealt with considering all his rights and he is agreed to give away the rights and authority of this farm house to the contractors of the new project. The demolition will not only cause damage to the greenery of the neighborhood but also will enhance the pollution in the form of dust and noise. This will impact the neighbors of the housing complex which is only one thousand feet away from this project's site. The first activity which is to be expected to be done first is the clearance of vegetation which is a direct damage to the environment. The agricultural value and output of this land will be multiplied with zero once the vegetations will be cleared of the surface. 200 acre of the farm land which this project has bought for the current project is a vast land and clear vegetation from it will damage not only the view from the site but also will be a decrease in economy. • 9. Settlers In The New World Essay A Reflection of Settlers in the New World In the event of pursuing freedom, exploration, and goals, several people journeyed a crossed the shores, and oceans, to discover a land with plenty of provisions. Meanwhile, natural supplies were bountiful, in a woody environment, with a generous amount of land inhabited by both wildlife and humans. According to Perkins, "from small coastal footholds, the land stretched before the newcomers in majesty and mystery, while the inhabitants they met told of wonders yet unseen – of towering peaks and mighty rivers, of shifting sands and ancient cities, in a continent of unimaginable size, more than half of it covered by forest of fabulous density" (p.2). The variety of our soils, situations, climates, governments, and produce, hath something which must please everybody." (Avalon project). Deforestation Essay Deforestation Thesis: Deforestation is one of the most significant issues of our time; considerable measures must be taken to prevent further pillaging of our unique forest resource. Ninety percent of the earth's trees between three and four hundred years old have been cut down. The remaining ten percent is all we will ever have (Gallant, 97). The definition of deforestation by the Random House Dictionary of the English Language is "to divest or clear of forests or trees." With new technology such as satellites systems, low altitude photography and side looking radar scientists now figure that the world is losing about twenty million hectares of tropical forests annually. It has been suggested that the high deforestation rates are caused partially by the fact that the new surveys are more accurate and thus reveal old deforestation rates that were miscalculated with previous methods (Westoby, 202). At first there was concern only among foresters about deforestation but now the public has created organizations such as Green Peace to facilitate increased awareness and reduce deforestation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) has worked mainly within the forestry community to find new and better ways to manage the forests. In 1985 there was the introduction of the Tropical Forestry Action Plan or T.F.A.P. This plan involved the F.A.O, United Nations, World Bank, other developmental agencies, and several other multi–national government organizations; together they developed a new strategy. More than sixty countries have decided to prepare national forestry action plans to manage their forests (Gallant, 381). • 14. Coal Mining Pros And Cons NorthMet Mining Project Polymet Mining is a mining industry that is proposing to create Minnesota's first sulfide mine. The company is wanting to create an open pit copper and nickel mine that is located north of Hoyt Lakes in the Superior National Forest (BC Hydro). They plan to call this project the NorthMet Mining Project. There is a dire need for nickel and copper in America, and building this mine will help obtain these resources. There are many pros and cons to the mine being built in one of Minnesota's National Forests. The building of this mine would help obtain the necessary resources that the United States is lacking, but will also destroy the natural state of the Superior National Forest and many habitats of the animals living within the forest. In my opinion, I do not think that building this mine will benefit the United States because of all the damage to the natural land that it will cause. Contrary to iron mines, sulfur mines release sulfuric acid when water comes in contact with tailings or other mining wastes during the mining process. Sulfuric acid has ... Another small benefit to the mine would be the resources that we can obtain from this region ("Investing in our region and state for substantial economic returns"). • 16. Deforestation And Its Effects On Deforestation Rainforests are found typically in tropical areas with a constant heavy rainfall in its biodiversity. "When areas of rainforests are destroyed, it's not just the trees that disappear." It's time for the government to take action on deforestation. Rainforests are an important location for indigenous people and animals because that's where their home belongs. Yet the government and organizations ignore those facts and just demolish their homes in order to gain a new location for productions. It's a topic that's constantly debated in politics and society should take a recognition on what's happening in deforestation. More than half of the world's rainforests are destroyed and is in danger by humans, therefore, the government shouldn't allow deforestation anymore in order to save the remaining rainforests in the environment because it affects habitats, species, and indigenous people. Loss of habitats is an evident threat in the rainforest as the facilities continue to form new funds to buildings and resources. In deforestation, people can profit and revenue on the resources to inhibit for society to use. They profit on the resources they sell to other countries after they obtain the sources they received from the rainforests. Rather than the facilities looking at a profit for their own benefits, the destruction of the land will cause the species to never return back nor will it provide shelter for them in their adapting habitat. • 17. What Is The Role Of Deforestation In The Amazon Rainforest ABSTRACT One in ten species in the world lives in the Amazon, which makes it the most biodiverse tropical rainforest in the world. This great expanse of rainforest harbors about half of all species on Earth. As large areas of this tropical forest are cleared by deforestation, entire species are vanishing, many of them unknown. The dense tropical forests also hold a large amount of carbon that is being released into the atmosphere because of deforestation. Although deforestation in the tropics is rapid and widespread, some people are making an increasing effort to mitigate potential disaster. INTRODUCTION The Amazon rainforest represents over half of our planets remaining rainforest. This rainforest encompasses the largest and most biodiverse region of tropical rainforest in the world. This expanse of forest includes 5,500,000 km2–covered rainforest with 16,000 species of tree (Hubbell, 2008). • 18. Environmental Pollution Introduction: Our planet relies on vegetation as a source of oxygen and cutting it down takes away that source. This creates an unstable balance where civilization needs to rely on something else for that missing part of oxygen. To what extent should humans prevent deforestation in major forests worldwide? Forests cover about 30% of our entire planet and scientists are predicting that within the next 50–100 years, deforestation will cause all non–protected forests to be cut down (National Geographic). As stated by the NASA Earth Observatory author and editor Rachel Lindsey, "In the Amazon alone, scientists estimate that the trees contain more carbon than ten years of human produced greenhouse gases" (Lindsey). As people cut down trees on a daily basis, the carbon that is held in the tree is released into the atmosphere, adding to the already present global warming problem. As the trees are cleared, people tend to replace this previously forested area with pastures and fields to grow crops on. This is not only bad for the environment, it additionally creates a hotter climate. Meanwhile, Science News author and previous writer/editor for the Chicago Adler Planetarium Janet Raloff shows readers that nitrous oxide has a large impact on the ozone of our planet, contributing to global warming and climate change. The ozone absorbs most of the radiation coming from the sun to the earth. As trees are cut down, it increases the rate of nitrous oxide released into the atmosphere ... Peat fires in forests add significantly to the greenhouse gas emissions. (Greenhouse, 2014) For decades, millions of hectares of forest have been cleared with various motives in mind. Tropical Nature: Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South America has opened my eyes to another world that I had not paid much attention to. Adrian Forsyth and Ken Miyata introduced a new world of wonder filled with so much diversity. Ecology and evolution go hand and hand, and the rainforest–a beautiful ecosystem driven by the climate [biome]–is a phenomenal example as hot spot for evolution. From the humidity, the high temperatures, the canopy of the trees, and so much more. Diversity thrives in this environment, and it 's obvious from the variety of species that have been found inhabiting such areas. Organisms depend on their communities, they depend on the interspecific relationships they develop; from predation (herbivory, carnivores, etc.), mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism. Without each other, they could not survive, and in some cases they even evolve with one another. The evolutionary process of pollination of flowers provides some examples of this. Tropical plants are dioecious, which translates to having separate male and female plants. Tropical plants cannot rely on the traditional wind pollination method due to the lack of wind and lack of targets nearby; therefore, they cannot pollinate themselves or plants of the same sex. Instead, they often look towards the mobile organisms that surround them. To do this, they 've evolved ways to attract them; either provide them with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The program includes measures related to conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forests carbon stocks (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2008). It is well known that climate change is one of the most controversial environmental issues that has been discussed, and in the climate change picture REDD is a topic which contains diverse points and dimensions that request attention. The REDD program includes goals that are seen by many people how extremely important and essential ones to address the climate problem, whereas other environmentalists may put in doubt its efficiency and feasibility. Given its potential importance to the global climate and its complexity, it is necessary consider biophysical, social and economic magnitudes of REDD. Forests are what we call an exhaustible resource, one which can be used up if it is not used carefully. Over the last few decades, deforestation has threatened the rainforests with total extinction. In his concept, Adam Smith explains that in a free market no regulation of any type would be needed to ensure that the mutually beneficial exchange of goods and services can take place, since the "invisible hand" would guide market participants to trade in the most mutually beneficial manner. (www.investorwords.com) Many private agents, according to these studies, have no interest in maintaining the forest's beauty and biodiversity, as services provided by forests are benefits that cannot be priced, so are not profit–making. Another factor precipitating deforestation appears to be poverty. Commonly held views argue that "high discount rates" received by poor countries are a cause of deforestation (The World Bank Forestry Policy 1991, Pearce and Watford 1993.). Because forests imply long gestation; private agents, particularly from the poorest countries, value what they can get immediately from forests more than what they can get in the future. But in 1999, Ekbom and Bojo challenged those views in a World Bank examination by showing that poverty does not necessarily lead to shorter time horizons and an increased rate of environmental degradation. They show how in fact the rural poor have used resources in a conservationist manner over a long period spanning centuries. Deforestation Of Latin American Forest Deforestation presents in an abundance of ways, including fires, clear–cutting for agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and degradation due to climate change. The foremost reason of deforestation in Latin America is the requirement for food, fuel, shelter, and foreign exchange. Year on year, a space of tropicalforest the size of Great Britain is "converted" from an area equal to the size of Europe. Ever since 1950, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), half of the world 's forests have disappeared. "Latin America has lost 37 percent of its tropical forests," says the FAO. As more and more of Latin American forest are degraded, more and more detrimental effects are being seen. Deforestation is changing a number of resources for tribal groups, altering their way of life, temperatures are increasing at a dangerous rate because of a buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, habitats and species such as plants and wildlife are being annexed due to the destructive effects of deforestation. Deforestation is inarguably helpful to supplying money to countries that sell the products from the forest, but huge wealth being generated from the forests comes with large–scale environmental and social costs. In the case without and alternative use, which ensure keeping the forest stand, the agricultural frontier expands until the distance where Ra equals zero. Transportation costs may be too high at this point. Thus, to reach markets is too costly and deforestation stops. The relation Rf–deforestation is exactly the opposite of the relation Ra–deforestation: the higher the Rf, the lower the deforestation. Rents coming from forest activities vary with respect to the aggregation level. At the local level, forest rents include the same variables agricultural rents do. However, at bigger aggregation levels, such as regional/national, or global, other forest ES are included. Provision costs at such level are zero since they are provided directly by the forest ecosystem. To achieve forest conservation requires making the forests profitable enough to compete with agricultural activities. This appears as an obvious conclusion of this model. • 31. The Role Of Tropical Rainforest And Water Cycle The role of tropical rainforest in water cycle The tropical rainforest plays a significant role in regulating the water cycle on earth, through transpiration and evaporation process. Transpiration is the water vapour loss from plants through stomata, and evaporation is the water loss from all other part of plants but leaves and other living things in the forest. Evapotranspiration are the accumulation of transpiration and evaporation in the forest. During transpiration, trees suck water from soil through the root system and transport the water to leaves through xylem, and then release the water to the air through stomata. Transpiration happens simultaneously with photosynthesis. The soil loss water due to evapotranspiration process and the water level will be recharged through precipitation. In the tropical rainforest, precipitation rate are high due to high evapotranspiration rate. High evapotranspiration rate plays a significant role in cloud formation above the rainforest area and its surroundings. Water vapour that is released into the air will be condensed as it moves to a higher altitude. The condensed water vapour form the clouds above the forest. The more water vapour being released into the air, the more clouds would be formed. Figure 1. These soils were believed to have formed on ancient parent materials under uniformly hot and humid conditions, and be highly leached, nutrient–poor, and characterized by laterite (hard iron oxide) deposits which cause the soil to become rock hard upon desiccation (Sanchez, 1976). Of course, tropical soils are not this uniform. Even if parent materials were essentially homogeneous throughout the tropics, the huge range in temperature, topography and precipitation regime found within the tropical zone would lead to very different pedogenesis in different areas (Sanchez, 1976). Furthermore, there are a wide variety of parent materials found in the tropics. Some soils are formed on the ancient Brazilian and Guianan Shields, some on recently exposed or deposited parent materials, and some on volcanic ash (Van Wambecke and Dudal). The only characteristic all tropical soils share by definition is that they experience a temperature change of less than 5 C during the course of the year (Sanchez, 1976). Daniel Quinn, an American writer claims that "...man was innocent until he discovered the difference between good and evil. Once it gets to be later in the evening, the temperature decreases to an average of seventy–two degrees Fahrenheit. At one point, they covered about fourteen percent of the earth's surface. After years of them being harvested, currently they now only cover roughly six percent of the earth's surface. They receive anywhere from one hundred and sixty to four hundred inches of rain a year. Rain itself occurs about two hundred and fifty days a year. "The rainforest is one of the earth's best recyclers, because seventy–five percent of the water ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Easter Islander's Rise And Fall Essay example The original inhabitants of Easter Island serve to show us what the ingenuity of the human spirit can accomplish and the follies that can accompany them. The first islanders were the Polynesians that arrived around 400 AD from south–east Asia. It is estimated that their were between twenty and thirty individuals that made the colossal journey. By the innovation of the double canoe it allowed them to travel a great distance to an island where they could establish a brilliant civilization. There civilization was based on being the best one can be which fostered intense competition between the different clans. Competition brought out the best and the worst in the people over their greed for the resources that the island provided. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to advance the islander's society, they began cutting down the vegetation and wooded areas of the island. They found this necessary because by cutting down the trees it allowed for more space for agriculture that the inhabitants needed to satisfy the flourishing population. It was also necessary because the trees were used for canoes, heating, houses, cooking and poles. The greatest abuse of the wooded area came from the need to move the stone statues from the quarry to different sites on the island. Islanders used the tree trunks as rollers since they had to rely on human power to move them. Excessive use of wooded areas resulted in over six hundred large stone statues being made and most of the forest disappearing by the 1600s. The disappearance of the wooded areas brought about great changes to the islander's way of life. One change was that the islanders could no longer build houses out of wood and instead had to find new places to live. They began living in shelters dug out from the hillside and making reed huts made from the remaining vegetation that grew near the water. The lack of woodlands brought an end to long journeys since the canoes were made of wood. Only reed boats were a possibility that could only travel a short distance. Gathering food from the sea was made harder too. Since nets for fishing were made from the mulberry tree that was no longer available. The diminishing resources resulted ... This is not just negative effects but also some very positive effects from the deforestation of the rainforests. From deforestation there are many problems that can be caused by this, environmental, social, economic and political issues all from the destruction of the rainforests across the world. There has been dramatic deforestation across the world for some time now and many of the Earths natural forests have been cleared or degraded so that they can be used for other purposes. Tropical forests are being destroyed at an ever–increasing rate. Estimates of the extent and rate of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the rate of destruction of the Amazonian rainforest increased by 40% between 2001 and 2002. More than 25,000 sq km were cleared in a year, mainly for farming. That represents an area of land larger than Belgium. The Amazon is home to up to 30% of the world's animal and plant life. Trees also convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, thereby playing a major part in reducing pollution and controlling climate change caused by excess greenhouse gases. The tropical rainforest of the Amazon Basin is the largest area of tropical rainforest in the world. Different countries exploit the forest for different uses and we shall go into these causes now. One of the major purposes for the clearing of the forest is for housing. These happens in countries where the population is growing rapidly, e.g. Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In addition, more houses are built in deforested areas to resettle people from crowded and heavily urbanised and densely populated cities in Brazil such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Extensive areas of the tropical rainforest have been cleared to grow pasture for cattle rearing and to cultivate crops for subsistence and commercial agriculture. Cattle ranching is an important source of farming activity in many Amazonian countries like Brazil, Colombia and Peru just to name a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Ecosystem Sustainability and Climate Change An Introduction to Ecosystem Sustainability and Climate Change: Anthropogenic activities have been pouring greenhouse gases into the atmosphere which is evident from the increasing trends of changes in global temperature, precipitation, climate induced hazards/disasters, pest distribution, etc. It is alternating the habitable areas of species, their distribution, rate of survival and reproduction, food web interactions, ecosystem services, and their conservation. Ecological managers need to invent smart solutions to control and mitigate further erosion of ecosystems. The increase in GHGs concentration in the atmosphere leads to change in climate and biological characteristics of the ecosystems. The concentration of CO2 is expected to rise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The above practices are mainly aimed at enhancing ecological resilience of species, ecosystem services, ecological connectivity, habitat creation, in–situ conservation, re–naturalization of policies, enhancing partnership between multiple stakeholders, and community engagement. The tools which can be used to promote ecological sustainability are biodiversity inclusive EIA, adaptive management, and use of revamped protocols for monitoring of the floral and faunal species. Case Study 1: As a part of Bavarian Climate Program (2008–2011), the Bavarian Forest Administration developed extensive maps of the forest areas and developed climate models of different species. The plan envisaged conversion of 2, 69,000 ha of private and community stands of conifer forests into mixed stands. The target is to convert 1, 00,000 ha by 2020 and another 1, 65,000 ha of state forests by 2033 by a public enterprise of Bavarian State Forest known as Bayerische Staatsforsten. It includes replacement of Noway's Pine and Spruce stands into mixed stands of broad leaf such as beech and oak to promote growth of climate tolerant species. The implemented forestry management techniques is helping to enrich species diversity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
