Anabolic Steroids And Steroids Use
The Plunge: A lifestyle of Cheating Gym Candy, 'roids, juice, pumpers, weight trainers, clear, beans
and hype (Steroids and their). All of these words are slang for the illegal substance known more
commonly as anabolic steroids and HGH (human growth hormone). The controversy surrounding
anabolic steroids and HGH in sports has stormed to the forefront of the many problems that plague
America today. Anabolic steroids are synthetic chemicals that mimic the effects of the male sex
hormone testosterone. Some athletes seeking increased muscular strength and size abuse anabolic
steroids (Ricki Lewis). According to Fox News, ¬¬¬5% of middle school and high school aged–
children have or currently use anabolic steroids. 30 to 40% of college and professional athletes use
steroids, as well as 10–20% of high school athletes (Ricki Lewis). Despite their illegality, law
enforcement officials cannot devote more resources to policing steroid use and trafficking because
they are still fighting the abuse of other illegal drugs that affect many more young people
(McCloskey and Bailes). Many athletes looking to gain a competitive edge on all levels use anabolic
steroids because of their muscle growth and muscle building benefits, but overlook the extensive list
of sometimes life–threatening side effects that steroids may bring. I believe that athletes should not
believe they have the right to take steroids to gain an even slight competitive advantage because it
leads to a larger ethical problem

Should Anabolic Steroids Be Banned
Athletes are always looking for an edge on their competition, some choose to go as far as to use
anabolic steroids to modify their genetics. Anabolic steroids are used by athletes to improve
physical performance, as the synthetic hormone resembles testosterone and promotes muscle
growth. These substances are a part of the banned substances list, and are outlawed by all
professional sports organizations. But is it time to lift this ban? If steroids were widely accepted,
professional sports would become more entertaining, the playing field would become more even,
and the distribution and consumption of the enhancers would become safer. Steroids need to become
legalized to improve professional sports. Steroids are proven to make sports more entertaining, ...

Much of the time steroids can be a dangerous business, as additives are put in to make the steroids
discreet in the body. According to professor, Julian Savulescu at the University of Oxford, "Because
doping is illegal, the pressure is to make performance enhancers undetectable, rather than safe.
Performance enhancers are produced or bought on the black market and administered in a
clandestine, uncontrolled way with no monitoring of the athlete's health. Allowing the use of
performance enhancers would make sport safer as there would be less pressure on athletes to take
unsafe enhancers and a pressure to develop new safe performance enhancers and to make existing
enhancers more effective at safe dosages...". By legalizing this performance enhancer, it would
allow for big pharmaceutical companies to distribute safely to athletes. No longer would athletes
have to take dangerously high doses, because these companies could make an incremental amount
of the drug very potent. This is one the biggest reasons why steroids remain illegal, is because they
are seen as dangerous. But contrary to popular belief, the legalization of steroids would make them
more safe. The legalization of steroids is needed to further professional sports. Many benefits can be
had from this rule change. It will bring excitement back to the fans and bring in more income for
sports teams. Historic records will seem attainable and will bring new fans to sports. It will allow
for dreams of hard working people to become a reality. Genetics would no longer be a hindrance. It
will also make steroids safer. So that athletes don't need to risk their health to become the best. If we

Anabolic Steroids In The Sports World
In today's sports world, performance enhancing drugs have become more and more of a problem.
Famous athletes with records upon records do not always play by the rules. Celebrities with
countless amounts of fans and admires turn out to be nothing but a cheater. These athletes are paid
millions of dollars to simply perform, entertain, and follow the rules of their respected sport.
Performance enhancing drugs (PED's) have changed the way we look at athletes and their legacies.
One of the most common PEDs used in the sports world is anabolic steroids. Of course a long list of
other drugs come to mind such as Adderall and testosterone, but they all increase the human body's
physical capabilities in some way shape or form. Athletes use anabolic ... Show more content on

He owns the record for most Tour de France titles with seven. Most people pictured him as a world
class athlete and hero after not only defeating cancer, but demolishing his competing year in and
year out in the Tour de France. His glorious life story inspired thousands if not millions of people
across the world effected by cancer. All of his fame came to a crashing halt in 2013 when he
admitted that the use of banned substances resulted in his success (Allen J.). Armstrong's name,
image, and legacy destroyed in the minds people all across the world. Even if he were still able to
win those titles without the use of illegal substances, the records and titles were all stripped from his
name. Armstrong's dope scandal opened the eyes of fans in every sport, causing them to have
second thoughts on professional athletes who find tremendous success in their respected sport. It
also forced the sport of bicycling to admit to problems related to drug use, leading to extreme anti–
doping involvement (Pugmire L.) One man's cheating techniques has changed the entire sports
community as a whole. Another professional sports organization effected by the use of PEDs is the
MLB. Crushing monster homeruns that measure at extraordinary lengths is not an easy task.
Throughout history the MLB has ran into multiple dilemmas where some of the sport's biggest
names have broken the rules. Barry Bonds, the all–time homerun leader in the MLB, and many
other star baseball players were caught and accused for the use of steroids and growth hormones
during their careers. These stars were proven guilty after a two–year investigation of the BALCO

Introduction
This research task will be focusing on the synthetic substance "Anabolic Steroids" .The aim of the
research task is to understand what effect the substance has on us humans and especially on the
reproductive system in our bodies. Gym and Body building is becoming more of a fashion than
anything else and can be referred to as the "modern drug" and just like when drug addicts have been
using the same drug for a long period of time and don't get the same feeling they move on to a
stronger dosage or substance and this is exactly what is happening with people today in regards to
gym and body building, people are going to the gym and lifting weights and are slowly seeing
results but these results come slowly which frustrates them so they are turning to Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids are consumed by individuals so that they can benefit from one of or both of the
Anabolic steroid functions .The Anabolic steroid has two functions. It serves an "Anabolic" function
which is to increase the rate of muscle growth and it serves an androgenic function which is to
catalyze the increase and growth of male sexual characteristics in both male and female consumers.
The Substance is correctly named: Anabolic–Androgenic Steroids (Anabolic Steroid Abuse , 2006)
Anabolic Androgenic steroids was defined by the FreeDictionary.com as:
"(Pharmacology) any of a group of synthetic steroid hormones (androgens) used to stimulate muscle
and bone growth for therapeutic or athletic purposes" (Anabolic androgenic steroids , 2016)
Chemical Structure of Anabolic Steroids.
Anabolic Steroids are formed by several steroid rings originating from a tetracyclic base. This a
result of the combining of one Cyclopetane (C5H10) ring and three Cyclohexane (C6H12) rings.

Anabolic Steroids
In today's society, athletes are revered as heroes. There is immense pressure to be the best. Athletes
are willing to do whatever it takes to gain an edge, even if it means compromising their health. For
almost three decades, athletes have been supplementing their strength program with anabolic
steroids to enhance their performance. To be sure, anabolic steroids are effective supplements to
strength training programs, but there is no doubt that the consequences can be deleterious.
What are Anabolic Steroids and how do they work?
Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. Most healthy males
produce 2–10 milligrams per day of testosterone. Testosterone is responsible for ... Show more

Users often utilize a dangerous practice known as stacking, the combination several different types
of steroids to maximize their effectiveness (http://www.nashville.net/~acarney/8html).
Protein Synthesis
Anabolic steroids cause enzymes, such as RNA polymerase, to promote two important biochemical
reactions, creatine phosphate synthesis and protein synthesis. Creatine phosphate is a molecule that
can be metabolized in the absence of sufficient oxygen as a short term energy source. Increased
creatine phosphate synthesis enables athletes to train harder and for longer periods of time. Protein
synthesis is increased as the newly formed receptor–steroid complex migrates to the nucleus and
initiates transcription. The production of RNA is elevated, causing an increased rate of protein
synthesis (http://www.bigsport.com/steroids/steroids/roidb11a.txt).
Nitrogen Retention
Anabolic steroids increase the body's ability to retain nitrogen. By allowing for better utilization of
the nitrogen in ingested protein, anabolic steroids help athletes to build body mass
(http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~hsr/hsr/winter97/steroid.html). In order for an athlete to accumulate
extra muscle mass, his or her body must temporarily be in a state of positive nitrogen balance; more
nitrogen must come into the body than is lost. During strenuous exercise, the release of
glucocorticosteroids creates a negative nitrogen balance in the body. Anabolic steroids can reverse

The Drawbacks Of Anabolic Steroids
The Drawbacks of Anabolic Steroids and Why They Should Stay Illegal
Anabolic steroids have been used and taken by humans for over half a century. The effects they
provide have developed large ongoing debates as to whether these substances should be allowed to
the general public. Anabolic steroid in short provide the human body a much grander potential to
build muscle by helping the cells within the body produce more muscle fibers at an astonishing rate
that could never be achieved naturally. Many issues have arisen like health problems relating to
these drugs have stirred studies like that "Eighty–three percent of steroid users in a study had a low
pumping capacity that was linked to increased risk of heart failure and sudden cardiac ... Show more

In 1975 performance enhancing drugs were made illegal in and out of sports. I believe anabolic
steroids should remain illegal due to the the profound negative effects they provide from health
related risk to unfair competition in sports caused by these drugs.
Anabolic steroids provide the benefit of increased muscle mass but at a cost of endangering your
healthy both physically and mentally. To understand this issue we first need to look at the common
side effects provided with these drugs. Severe acne, increased risk of tendinitis, liver problems,
tumors, high cholesterol, high blood pressure leading to hypertension, heart and circulatory
problems and infections such as HIV or hepatitis. These are just a few of the main health issues
associated with the drugs but a list literally a page long would still not cover all the health issues
associated with steroids. Steroids have even resulted in more severe problems where one study
showed that "there was an 11% increase in chance of death found from steroid use"(Dosomething).
These are some of the physical problems associated with the drugs but did not even mention the
mental issues caused. Clear links have been found that steroids can cause depression, concentration
problems and aggressive behavior leading to outburst and large amounts of aggression. Irritability
has also been found along with a boat load of other physiological disorders caused by this nasty
drug. All this evidence provides strong reasons why

Anabolic steroids are synthetic coumpounds formulated to be like the male sex hormone
testosterone. Many athletes use anabolic steroids male and female alike, such as body builders ,
weightlifters, baseball players, football players, swimmers, and runners. They do so because they
mistakenly believe that they will gain strength and size.
In a male testosterone is released by the leydig cells in the testes.
The testosterone has two main functions androgenic and anabolic. Androgenic is the development of
male sex characteristics. Anabolic is the development of muscle tissue.

People who use them sometimes develop acne, deepend voice, abnormal hair growth. Some of these
side effects can not be reveresed. Men who use steroids may become more or less interested in sex.
The most severe effect of anabolic steroids is on the liver they call it peliosis hepatis or blood filled
cysts in the liver. If the cysts rupture they can cause liver failure which can kill a person. After
stoping the use of steroids though these cysts may become smaller and dissapear. Steroids can also
cause cancerous tumors in the liver that can also kill they can also dissapear if the drugs are not used
anymore. Steroids are also increase the risk of getting gallstones.
Use of steroids also effects your cardiovascular system. There are two kinds of cholesterol in your
body high–density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and low–density lipoprotein cholesterol. HDL is
good for the body but LDL is very hazardous to your health. Using steroids lowers the number of
HDL in the body in most of the users. The lowering of the amount of HDL in the body puts the
person at a higher risk of developing high blood pressure and blood–clotting problems.
Some of the physicians also think that steroids also cause abnormal fat deposits in the body and

Pores grow large and acne problems that are not aided by typical over–the–counter medication can
occur. Stretch marks also become prominent, though they are not directly caused by steroids. They
stem from the rapid weight gain and muscle growth that steroids bring. Now the cardiovascular
system has been associated with anabolic steroid use. Steroid use can also increase the level of low
density lipoprotein and decrease the level of high density lipoprotein. Because of the high and low
ratio it can increase the risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic is a condition in which fatty
substances are deposited inside the arteries and disrupt the blood flow. Basically what that means is
that if the blood is prevented from making it to the heart that the result can be a heart attack. If the
blood cannot reach the brain that can also result in a stroke. Steroid use can also affect the liver in

Anabolic Steroid Use And Anabolic Steroids
Why do athletes get so hooked on this so called "Steroid" ? I'm interested in this question, because
that's the question that truly caught my attention the most and, also keeps me wondering. If people
who use it have seen improvement, why do they keep using it. The anabolic steroid also known as
the anabolic–androgenic steroid is a drug that athletes use to give more muscle mass to the body and
create more testosterone in the body. If traced back to the 1940's steroids first appeared in Germany.
Athletes had begun to use this substance as early as 1950 at the olympic games during the Cold war.
Website http://Cesar.com states, " From that point until the early 1970 's, steroids became
increasingly popular among not just Olympic athletes, but also professional sports players and high
school athletes (Cesar). Steroids truly have developed into something that everyone wants to get to
achieve the perfect body or create a better physique.
In the article "Body Image, Disordered Eating and Anabolic Steroid Use in Female Bodybuilders"

of their eating habits. Especially bodybuilders, because of competing they have to look and be lean,

What Are Androgenic Anabolic Steroids?
INTRODUCTION
What are Androgenic–Anabolic Steroids? Androgenic–anabolic steroids (AAS) are synthetic
derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. Testosterone is produced in the Leydig cells of the
testes. Scientist have tried to reproduce a synthetic form of this hormone since the early 1900s. As
early as 1935, the production of synthetic hormones has been possible. These hormones have two
distinct effects. The androgenic effects which produce the development of the male characteristics
such as hair and beard growth, deepened voice, and increased strength. The anabolic effects cause
protein synthesis and inhibit the breakdown of proteins. This leads to increased muscle size,
strength, and quicker recovery with proper workout routines. The primary medical uses of these
compounds are to treat delayed puberty, some types of impotence, and wasting of the body caused
by HIV infection or other diseases.
How Do Steroids Work Different steroids may have different functions but they all work in a similar
fashion. The primary method of action involves stimulation of receptors within the muscle cells
which activates specific genes. This is known as a "genomic effect" since it involves gene
transcription, or the copying of a strand of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). When a steroid is taken by
mouth or by an injection, it travels to an androgen receptor which is located with certain cells. The
connection between the drug and the receptor activates a process which creates

body. Before taking a drug, whether it is legal or not, the user should have a solid understanding of
what that drug will do to their body Body Paragraph 1: The first step of understanding steroids, is to

One of the reasons that human growth hormone steroids are popular is because they build muscle
and increase height of the user. "HHG is an anabolic hormone which builds up muscle by binding
target cells with special receptors. This helps muscle grow faster. HGH acts also on bone cells. It
increases the growth plates in the bones of the athletes, causing them to grow. HGH increases
resorption of calcium to provide raw materials for bony framework." Because of increased height
and muscle mass, athletes are equipped to perform at a higher level (Benefits). Another benefit of
Human Growth Hormone steroids is the increased strength in bones and connective tissue. "HGH
also strengthens ligaments, bones, tendons, and cartilage." This is important to athletes because old
injuries will heal faster than the usual rate and this can minimize the occurrence of other injuries as
well (Benefits). Human Growth hormone steroids are also popular among athletes because the drug
burns excess fat with ease and also provides extra energy for the user. "HGH releases insulin into
the bloodstream which burns glucose at a faster rate, This helps to burn fat... By burning available
glucose and stored fat, even while sleeping, there is a steady supply of energy, thus giving extra
strength and endurance to perform well." This is important to athletes because excess fat and lack of
energy will cause them to perform at a lower level (Benefits). Athletes love to take human growth
hormone steroids because of the numerous positive physical effects of the drug, and it is easy for
these athletes to disregard the negative

Anabolic Steroids : A Fatal Attraction
Anabolic Steroids in Sports The market for top performing athletes in sports in the 21st century is a
competitive one. Athletes are pushed to, be stronger, an heal from injuries faster. With the pressure
to do well and get picked up by a professional team of sorts goes without saying that hard work is a
must to elevate ones professional athletic career, but what if one has reached a plateau or hit a wall
in a training regimen and just can not seem to push through? When some athletes hit the proverbial
wall when training they turn to steroids. Ruth Wood in an article titled Anabolic Steroids: A Fatal
Attraction? Writes, "Anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) are drugs of abuse. Despite bans on
steroid use, Olympic athletes, professional cyclists, American baseball players, and even racehorses
have tested positive for AAS. However, AAS are no longer the exclusive province of elite athletes.
Among school seniors in the United States (18 years of age), the lifetime incidence for steroid use
(4.0%) is comparable to that for crack cocaine (3.6%) or heroin (1.8%). Today, it is estimated that
over 3million people may have used AAS" (Wood 227). Athletes have used Anabolic Steroids for
years in bodybuilding as well as recently in baseball. Anabolic steroids affect the body by making it
easier to build muscle mass, but by doing so also affect items like ones heart and reproductive
system. "Abuse of anabolic steroids to induce skeletal muscle hypertrophy is widespread amongst

Anabolic Steroids And Its Effects On The Brain
Brief History Anabolic steroids are directly related to steroids, and both have similar effects,
however anabolic steroids intensify protein production in cells, leading to enlarged muscles, rather
steroids contain various hormones including testosterone. Both, however exert the chemical
dopamine into the blood stream, negatively effecting the brain driving addiction and abuse. The
steps and action foreshadowing steroids can be traced back to 1849, when a German scientist named
Arnold Adolph Berthold conducted tests and experiments on Cockerels, concluding that their male
testicles contain the necessary factors that make them male. This revelation may not attribute to the
direct creation of anabolic steroids, however it casts' a light towards understanding anabolic steroids
and must not be dismissed. With the cooperation of Berthold's discovery, a German chemist Adolf
Butenandt was able to purify and extract testosterone from urine. With the collaboration of a fellow
German chemist Leopold Ruziicka, they were able to create a synthetic form of testosterone safe for
human use in 1935. Their discovery received international acclaim and they were rewarded the 1939
Nobel Prize for their work in chemistry. The initial intent of 'steroids' was to help treat men who had
growth and development deficiencies. When World War II broke out steroids were used to help
malnourished soldiers gain weight and increase performance. After the war, steroids were being

The Dangers Of Anabolic Steroids
When overused, steroids can cause both desirable and undesirable changes to the body, from
developing increased muscle mass and characteristics of the opposite sex in addition to having a
dangerous impact on your mental and physical health (Effects, 1). Anabolic steroids have led to
hundreds of suspensions and health issues for many athletes, past and present. In 1983 alone, 10
athletes were disqualified from the 1984 Summer Olympics (Steroids, 1). Steroids are a danger to
love ones and sports around the world. In 1967, Tommy Simpson, a British Cyclist who was known
for his excessive steroid use died while riding in the thirteenth stage of The Tour de France

During the "steroid era," MLB franchise values rose from $140 million in 1995 to $322 million in

will be created, allowing ownership to gain more revenue. In 1998, MLB stars Mark McGwire and
Sammy Sosa (both steroid users) went head to head vying for the single season home run record set
in 1961, by Roger Maris. Both men broke the record of 61 home runs in the same season with 70
and 66 respectively (Steroids, 3). Many athletes that have been on steroids say that the risks are only

recover from an injury at an accelerated rate, rather to face the risks of steroids, than waiting to get
through their particular injury. While this research shows that athletes are willing to take the risk of

Even during 1970s, these were the most favorite ones by bodybuilders. Some of these steroids, such

Anabolic Steroid Analysis
Corticosteroids are a part of the steroid hormones family, which include glucocorticoids that are
synthesized and secreted by the adrenal cortex (Simon, et al., 2013, p. 545). On the flipside anabolic
steroids are controversial drugs that are synthetic variants of testosterone (Simon et al., 2013, p. 45).
Corticosteroid hormones are important for cognitive performance. However, while corticosteroids
have positive attributes, there are negative attributes as well. One of the negative attributes of
corticosteroids, is that they have been viewed as a disruptor when trying to memorize certain tasks
(Kloet, et al., 1999).

Positive effects for athletes are anabolic steroids have the ability to increase build muscle mass,
build endurance, strength, and increase protein synthesis so that they can train more intensely
without going into negative nitrogen balance. It is very important to keep in mind that taking these
steroids do not automatically give these positive effects; athletes must still train hard and be on a
strict diet.
Corticosteroids and anabolic steroids are both used for totally separate reasons. Corticosteroids are
used to fight stress caused by injury or illnesses while anabolic steroids are used for physical
reasons. Another difference in these steroids is anabolic steroids can cause liver damage or sterility,
but corticosteroids do not. However, both types of steroids have similarities. One of the things these
two steroids have in common, is that they both can have negative effects as well as positive effects

back to the original Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. Raw animal testicles were eaten by the
early Olympians. It sounds disgusting, but it did the job. With this in mind, it ... Show more content

This made it safe for human use. The discovery was so profound that both Butenandt and Ruzicka
were awarded the 1939 Nobel Prize for their achievements in chemistry. By the 1940's, anabolic
steroid use in the Soviet Union was becoming common. Dr. John Ziegler, a US Olympic team
physician found a way to develop methandrostenolone; commonly known as Dianabol. United
States Olympic lifters would soon find testosterone and Dianabol dosing to be a part of their regular
athletic routine. The impact the drugs were having on athletes were nothing short of impressive.
Several studies were published suggesting anabolic steroid use had no positive effect on sports
performance. At the time, this was done to discourage the use, but a lot of athletes didn't know or
care.
By 1967, anabolic steroid use was pretty common among Olympic athletes, particularly weight
lifters. Even though many physicians stated there was no benefit to anabolic steroid use and athletic
performance, the International Olympic Council banned the use of anabolic steroids. Shortly
afterwards, the majority of major sports governing bodies would follow suit. By 1972, the IOC
would begin implementing a full–scale drug testing program for all athletes.
The testing was very simple. Testosterone levels were measured, which can easily be done via a
blood test or urine sample. If testosterone levels were found to be six times

Anabolic Steroids And Its Effects On The Body
A 16–year old high school junior was told by his coach that he needed to be stronger and faster if he
wanted to play more in his senior year. The young man was discouraged because he has been trying
for years to gain weight and muscle, but it just was not enough. He remembered a friend telling him
about what anabolic steroids had done for him and decided to try it, he would later regret that
decision. Anabolic steroids are drugs that reciprocate certain natural hormones in the body such as
the male hormone testosterone, which can improve endurance and performance and stimulate
muscle growth. Even though anabolic steroids may provide the body image and results some
adolescents want, they can be harmful to the adolescent body and mind, it's not fair to those who
gained weight and muscle naturally because they may have a smaller chance of recognition, and
there are safer alternatives that can assist in gaining weight and muscle. According to Dr. Ali
Mohamadi, a medical doctor from the FDA, states that,"Various studies have been conducted and
generally reflect the findings of a Youth Risk and Behavior Surveillance System study, which
estimated that among U.S. high school students, 4.9% of males and 2.4% of females have used
anabolic steroids at least once in their lives. That's 375,000 young men and 175,000 young women."

Anabolic Steroids And Substance Steroids
According to the Merriam–Webster Dictionary anabolic steroids are any of a group of usually
synthetic hormones that are derivatives of testosterone, are used medically specially to promote
tissue growth, and are sometimes abused by athletes to increase the size and strength of their
muscles and improve endurance. The main purpose of anabolic steroids is to gain strength and
muscle very quickly and faster than any other drug enhancement. There are many types of models
that relate to anabolic steroids. One model is high school athletes who use anabolic steroids and
would mostly fall in the performance enhancer model category. Many may ask, what exactly are
performance enhancement drugs? Performance enhancement drugs are substances used to improve
any form of activity performance in humans. There are many experiments done on the use of
anabolic steroids within high schools. According to the Huffington Post as of 2011, 13 percent of
boys who play football in high school take anabolic steroids and that is just football players. All of
these young athletes who take steroids use the drug to become stronger. An average of 8.8 percent of
female high school athletes have also tried or currently use anabolic steroids. The crave to have a
"buffed body" is a big trend for young adults. A study from the University of Michigan showed that
in 1992, 72 percent of high school seniors believed that those using steroids "risked harming
themselves" (Are Student Athletes Taking Steroids?). Just

Anabolic Steroids
Anabolic steroid is a steroid that includes hormones that derive from testosterone, the primary male
hormone. As a Schedule III drug, it has a low to moderate chance of being abused. In 2001,
approximately 2% of high school students had taken steroids in the past year. Steroid revenue is
about 400 million dollars a year in the United States. With 100 varieties to choose from, no wonder
high–profile athletes have used them to get a "one–up" on their competition. As more varieties are
being invented, either by "blending" or "stacking," people need to be aware of the detrimental
effects of anabolic steroids.

Anabolic androgenic steroids are a synthetic version of testosterone which one injects into the body.
There are many different types of steroids however the most commonly abused are stimulants, HGH

testosterone many athletes, especially bodybuilders, take steroids to increase lean muscle mass,
strength, and performance. Anabolic androgenic steroids are a controversial topic within sports. The
main concern with steroids are the long term health effects that it has on the athletes.

Anabolic androgenic steroids play an important role in the pharmaceutical industry and have many
beneficial effects on sick patients. According to the Parssinen and Seppala the authors of the article
"Steroid Use and Long–Term Health Risks in Former Athletes" they state that "Anabolic steroids
and testosterone are effective and well tolerated pharmaceutical agents when administered for
proper medical indications such as androgen replacement therapy, osteoporosis, aplastic anemia, and
cancer." (Parssinen, Seppala, pg. 1). The issue is that the abuse of steroids have increased within
athletes and many doctors are concerned of the adverse effects that it will have.
Many studies have been conducted over the past few decades and have shown the harmful effects
that steroids can have on an athlete's body. In the article "Steroids in Combat Sports: Adverse effects
on Health" written by Malik and Trainor they list some of the damaging effects it can have such as:
"stoppage of bone growth resulting in growth retardation which is irreversible, increase risk of
muscle injury, bone destruction, heart disease..." (Malik, Trainor, and pg.1) the list goes on to
include diseases such as cancer, and even death.

Anabolic Steroids are known as anabolic–androgenic steroids. A drug that is structured to relate to

What anabolic steroids do is increase the protein in the cells. The increase in these cells most
happens in the skeletal muscles. Anabolic steroids can also have Androgenic and virilizing
properties, that includes the development and the maintenance of masculine characteristics. With
that, exactly what are the effects of anabolic steroids to the body visually and in health as well
mentally? With anabolic steroids, they can cause many affects with a human's health. For example
the heart, liver, Growth defects, Feminization, and the kidney. With the ways anabolic steroids
affects the heart is how it can have alterations in the structure of the heart. Like enlargement and
thickening of the left ventricle, this impairs its contractions and the relaxation. Other possible effects
of these alterations in the heart that can happen are hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, congestive
failure with the heart, heart attacks, and sudden cardiac death. With the sudden cardiac attacks,
anabolic steroids are typically the leading the cause, what researchers say. Other problems with

Testosterone is used as a basic standard in which all other anabolic steroids are measured. Each
anabolic steroid has its own anabolic and androgenic value. These values significantly explain the
steroid and help determine the possible combination.
Anabolic steroids have anabolic and androgenic effects in humans. The anabolic properties of
anabolic steroids are responsible for the growth of muscles and tissues. The androgen side promotes
masking effects such as deepening of the voice and increasing body and facial hair. The anabolic
effects of steroids are what athletes and bodybuilders seek to avoid androgenic effects.
In the early years of anabolic steroid development, there was no standardized test method for
different steroids or the method of measuring their strength. Hershberger Assay was introduced in
1960 to solve this problem. After administration of the steroid test, various parts of the body and
muscles were analyzed in the rat. Since testosterone was considered the standard for testing, the
tissue would be compared to the tissue exposed to testosterone. Levator is not the muscle in rats that

testosterone in the body. Steroids are used all around the world for sporting events or for

adding testosterone to the mix, the results can be phenomenal. Steroids are available as injections,
soluble tablets, and solutions, ointments, creams, inhalers, and tablets. A user can expect huge gains

Either way, the effect of the drug is the same; the user can expect some type of effect on their health.
The user will try to take enough anabolic steroid to increase the ability to exercise and allow
muscles to grow while minimizing the risk of side effects and the potential of being caught. If the
user takes smaller amounts of the drug, then they will have a lower risk of health effects. The
problem is that the drug is still harmful no matter the size of dosage the user is taking. Usually
steroids are taken in cycles with regular injections followed by periods of rest. If a user uses steroids
for a very long time without cycling off of the drug, then they will be affected the most due to the
drug staying in the users system for longer periods of time. Taking steroids for one month is less
risky than taking them for a whole year. Numerous books and web sites discuss the benefits and
risks of different techniques to maximize the effect of a variety of steroids on the body. Since

While certain steroids can raise blood pressure, which can cause anxiety, this can usually be kept

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, anabolic steroids are synthetic variations of the
male sex hormone testosterone. The article claims that healthcare providers can prescribe steroids
for treating hormonal problems, such as late puberty. Also, steroids can also treat diseases that cause
muscle losses, such as cancer and AIDS. But some athletes and bodybuilders abuse these drugs to
increase performance or improve their physical appearance.
People who abuse anabolic steroids take them orally or inject them into the muscles. Anabolic
steroids work differently from other drugs of abuse; they do not have the same short–term effects on
the brain. The most important difference is that steroids do not trigger rapid increases in the
chemical dopamine of the brain, which causes the "high" which cause people to abuse other
substances. However, long–term steroid abuse may act on some of the same cerebral pathways and
chemicals – including dopamine, serotonin and opiates – that are affected by other drugs. This can
have a significant effect on mood and behavior. Drug abuse by steroids can lead to serious, even
permanent, problems such as kidney problems or liver damage, enlarged heart, high blood pressure
and changes in blood cholesterol, all that increase the risk of stroke and heart

History And Advancement Of Anabolic Steroids
History of Steroids
So as to follow the history and advancement of anabolic steroids from their starting to their present
day structure, we initially need to think back towards old times, when it was realized that the
testicles were required for both the improvement and upkeep of male sexual qualities. In
advancement, this idea was further created, by a researcher named Berthold and his examinations on
cockerels done in 1849. He expelled the testes from these winged creatures, and they lost a few of
the attributes basic to the male of their species, including sexual capacity. In this way, we knew as
right on time as 1849 that the testicles worked to elevate what we consider to be essential male
sexual properties; at the end of the day, they are what "make men into men". Berthold additionally
found that if the testicles were uprooted and after that transplanted to the stomach area, the sexual
capacity of the winged animals was to a great extent unaffected. At the point when the fowls were
analyzed, it was found that no apprehensive associations were shaped, yet a limitlessly broad
arrangement of capillarization occurred. (1) This gave solid confirmation that "the testes follow up
on the blood" (2) and he further inferred this blood then systemically affected the whole living
being. Anabolic Steroid history, along these lines, can be really said to have made its initial step
with this straightforward arrangement of tests.

the future. Excessive use of steroids can cause major change in skin and even cause diseases of the
skin. Although acne is a common flaw, acne caused by steroid use is not always receptive to medical

Anabolic Steroids And Steroids Use

  • 1. Anabolic Steroids And Steroids Use The Plunge: A lifestyle of Cheating Gym Candy, 'roids, juice, pumpers, weight trainers, clear, beans and hype (Steroids and their). All of these words are slang for the illegal substance known more commonly as anabolic steroids and HGH (human growth hormone). The controversy surrounding anabolic steroids and HGH in sports has stormed to the forefront of the many problems that plague America today. Anabolic steroids are synthetic chemicals that mimic the effects of the male sex hormone testosterone. Some athletes seeking increased muscular strength and size abuse anabolic steroids (Ricki Lewis). According to Fox News, ¬¬¬5% of middle school and high school aged– children have or currently use anabolic steroids. 30 to 40% of college and professional athletes use steroids, as well as 10–20% of high school athletes (Ricki Lewis). Despite their illegality, law enforcement officials cannot devote more resources to policing steroid use and trafficking because they are still fighting the abuse of other illegal drugs that affect many more young people (McCloskey and Bailes). Many athletes looking to gain a competitive edge on all levels use anabolic steroids because of their muscle growth and muscle building benefits, but overlook the extensive list of sometimes life–threatening side effects that steroids may bring. I believe that athletes should not believe they have the right to take steroids to gain an even slight competitive advantage because it leads to a larger ethical problem ... • 2. Should Anabolic Steroids Be Banned Athletes are always looking for an edge on their competition, some choose to go as far as to use anabolic steroids to modify their genetics. Anabolic steroids are used by athletes to improve physical performance, as the synthetic hormone resembles testosterone and promotes muscle growth. These substances are a part of the banned substances list, and are outlawed by all professional sports organizations. But is it time to lift this ban? If steroids were widely accepted, professional sports would become more entertaining, the playing field would become more even, and the distribution and consumption of the enhancers would become safer. Steroids need to become legalized to improve professional sports. Steroids are proven to make sports more entertaining, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Much of the time steroids can be a dangerous business, as additives are put in to make the steroids discreet in the body. According to professor, Julian Savulescu at the University of Oxford, "Because doping is illegal, the pressure is to make performance enhancers undetectable, rather than safe. Performance enhancers are produced or bought on the black market and administered in a clandestine, uncontrolled way with no monitoring of the athlete's health. Allowing the use of performance enhancers would make sport safer as there would be less pressure on athletes to take unsafe enhancers and a pressure to develop new safe performance enhancers and to make existing enhancers more effective at safe dosages...". By legalizing this performance enhancer, it would allow for big pharmaceutical companies to distribute safely to athletes. No longer would athletes have to take dangerously high doses, because these companies could make an incremental amount of the drug very potent. This is one the biggest reasons why steroids remain illegal, is because they are seen as dangerous. But contrary to popular belief, the legalization of steroids would make them more safe. The legalization of steroids is needed to further professional sports. Many benefits can be had from this rule change. It will bring excitement back to the fans and bring in more income for sports teams. Historic records will seem attainable and will bring new fans to sports. It will allow for dreams of hard working people to become a reality. Genetics would no longer be a hindrance. It will also make steroids safer. So that athletes don't need to risk their health to become the best. If we see steroids legalized, professional sports with enhance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Anabolic Steroids In The Sports World In today's sports world, performance enhancing drugs have become more and more of a problem. Famous athletes with records upon records do not always play by the rules. Celebrities with countless amounts of fans and admires turn out to be nothing but a cheater. These athletes are paid millions of dollars to simply perform, entertain, and follow the rules of their respected sport. Performance enhancing drugs (PED's) have changed the way we look at athletes and their legacies. One of the most common PEDs used in the sports world is anabolic steroids. Of course a long list of other drugs come to mind such as Adderall and testosterone, but they all increase the human body's physical capabilities in some way shape or form. Athletes use anabolic ... Most people pictured him as a world class athlete and hero after not only defeating cancer, but demolishing his competing year in and year out in the Tour de France. His glorious life story inspired thousands if not millions of people across the world effected by cancer. All of his fame came to a crashing halt in 2013 when he admitted that the use of banned substances resulted in his success (Allen J.). Armstrong's name, image, and legacy destroyed in the minds people all across the world. Even if he were still able to win those titles without the use of illegal substances, the records and titles were all stripped from his name. Armstrong's dope scandal opened the eyes of fans in every sport, causing them to have second thoughts on professional athletes who find tremendous success in their respected sport. It also forced the sport of bicycling to admit to problems related to drug use, leading to extreme anti– doping involvement (Pugmire L.) One man's cheating techniques has changed the entire sports community as a whole. Another professional sports organization effected by the use of PEDs is the MLB. Crushing monster homeruns that measure at extraordinary lengths is not an easy task. Throughout history the MLB has ran into multiple dilemmas where some of the sport's biggest names have broken the rules. For almost three decades, athletes have been supplementing their strength program with anabolic steroids to enhance their performance. To be sure, anabolic steroids are effective supplements to strength training programs, but there is no doubt that the consequences can be deleterious. What are Anabolic Steroids and how do they work? Users often utilize a dangerous practice known as stacking, the combination several different types of steroids to maximize their effectiveness (http://www.nashville.net/~acarney/8html). Protein Synthesis Anabolic steroids cause enzymes, such as RNA polymerase, to promote two important biochemical reactions, creatine phosphate synthesis and protein synthesis. Creatine phosphate is a molecule that can be metabolized in the absence of sufficient oxygen as a short term energy source. Increased creatine phosphate synthesis enables athletes to train harder and for longer periods of time. Protein synthesis is increased as the newly formed receptor–steroid complex migrates to the nucleus and initiates transcription. The production of RNA is elevated, causing an increased rate of protein synthesis (http://www.bigsport.com/steroids/steroids/roidb11a.txt). Nitrogen Retention Anabolic steroids increase the body's ability to retain nitrogen. By allowing for better utilization of the nitrogen in ingested protein, anabolic steroids help athletes to build body mass (http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~hsr/hsr/winter97/steroid.html). In order for an athlete to accumulate extra muscle mass, his or her body must temporarily be in a state of positive nitrogen balance; more nitrogen must come into the body than is lost. During strenuous exercise, the release of glucocorticosteroids creates a negative nitrogen balance in the body. Anabolic steroids can reverse this

I believe anabolic steroids should remain illegal due to the the profound negative effects they provide from health related risk to unfair competition in sports caused by these drugs. Anabolic steroids provide the benefit of increased muscle mass but at a cost of endangering your healthy both physically and mentally. To understand this issue we first need to look at the common side effects provided with these drugs. Severe acne, increased risk of tendinitis, liver problems, tumors, high cholesterol, high blood pressure leading to hypertension, heart and circulatory problems and infections such as HIV or hepatitis. These are just a few of the main health issues associated with the drugs but a list literally a page long would still not cover all the health issues associated with steroids. Steroids have even resulted in more severe problems where one study showed that "there was an 11% increase in chance of death found from steroid use"(Dosomething). These are some of the physical problems associated with the drugs but did not even mention the mental issues caused. I'm interested in this question, because that's the question that truly caught my attention the most and, also keeps me wondering. If people who use it have seen improvement, why do they keep using it. The anabolic steroid also known as the anabolic–androgenic steroid is a drug that athletes use to give more muscle mass to the body and create more testosterone in the body. If traced back to the 1940's steroids first appeared in Germany. Athletes had begun to use this substance as early as 1950 at the olympic games during the Cold war. Website http://Cesar.com states, " From that point until the early 1970 's, steroids became increasingly popular among not just Olympic athletes, but also professional sports players and high school athletes (Cesar). Steroids truly have developed into something that everyone wants to get to achieve the perfect body or create a better physique. In the article "Body Image, Disordered Eating and Anabolic Steroid Use in Female Bodybuilders" by Gary S. Goldfield, he mentions how women and men often suffer from bulimia nervosa because of their eating habits. • 13. What Are Androgenic Anabolic Steroids? INTRODUCTION What are Androgenic–Anabolic Steroids? Androgenic–anabolic steroids (AAS) are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone testosterone. Testosterone is produced in the Leydig cells of the testes. Scientist have tried to reproduce a synthetic form of this hormone since the early 1900s. As early as 1935, the production of synthetic hormones has been possible. These hormones have two distinct effects. The androgenic effects which produce the development of the male characteristics such as hair and beard growth, deepened voice, and increased strength. The anabolic effects cause protein synthesis and inhibit the breakdown of proteins. This leads to increased muscle size, strength, and quicker recovery with proper workout routines. The primary medical uses of these compounds are to treat delayed puberty, some types of impotence, and wasting of the body caused by HIV infection or other diseases. How Do Steroids Work Different steroids may have different functions but they all work in a similar fashion. The primary method of action involves stimulation of receptors within the muscle cells which activates specific genes. This is known as a "genomic effect" since it involves gene transcription, or the copying of a strand of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). When a steroid is taken by mouth or by an injection, it travels to an androgen receptor which is located with certain cells. The connection between the drug and the receptor activates a process which creates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"HHG is an anabolic hormone which builds up muscle by binding target cells with special receptors. This helps muscle grow faster. HGH acts also on bone cells. It increases the growth plates in the bones of the athletes, causing them to grow. HGH increases resorption of calcium to provide raw materials for bony framework." Because of increased height and muscle mass, athletes are equipped to perform at a higher level (Benefits). Another benefit of Human Growth Hormone steroids is the increased strength in bones and connective tissue. "HGH also strengthens ligaments, bones, tendons, and cartilage." This is important to athletes because old injuries will heal faster than the usual rate and this can minimize the occurrence of other injuries as well (Benefits). With the pressure to do well and get picked up by a professional team of sorts goes without saying that hard work is a must to elevate ones professional athletic career, but what if one has reached a plateau or hit a wall in a training regimen and just can not seem to push through? When some athletes hit the proverbial wall when training they turn to steroids. Ruth Wood in an article titled Anabolic Steroids: A Fatal Attraction? Writes, "Anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) are drugs of abuse. Despite bans on steroid use, Olympic athletes, professional cyclists, American baseball players, and even racehorses have tested positive for AAS. However, AAS are no longer the exclusive province of elite athletes. Among school seniors in the United States (18 years of age), the lifetime incidence for steroid use (4.0%) is comparable to that for crack cocaine (3.6%) or heroin (1.8%). Today, it is estimated that over 3million people may have used AAS" (Wood 227). Athletes have used Anabolic Steroids for years in bodybuilding as well as recently in baseball. Anabolic Steroids And Its Effects On The Brain Brief History Anabolic steroids are directly related to steroids, and both have similar effects, however anabolic steroids intensify protein production in cells, leading to enlarged muscles, rather steroids contain various hormones including testosterone. Both, however exert the chemical dopamine into the blood stream, negatively effecting the brain driving addiction and abuse. The steps and action foreshadowing steroids can be traced back to 1849, when a German scientist named Arnold Adolph Berthold conducted tests and experiments on Cockerels, concluding that their male testicles contain the necessary factors that make them male. This revelation may not attribute to the direct creation of anabolic steroids, however it casts' a light towards understanding anabolic steroids and must not be dismissed. With the cooperation of Berthold's discovery, a German chemist Adolf Butenandt was able to purify and extract testosterone from urine. With the collaboration of a fellow German chemist Leopold Ruziicka, they were able to create a synthetic form of testosterone safe for human use in 1935. Their discovery received international acclaim and they were rewarded the 1939 Nobel Prize for their work in chemistry. This can have a significant effect on mood and behavior. Drug abuse by steroids can lead to serious, even permanent, problems such as kidney problems or liver damage, enlarged heart, high blood pressure and changes in blood cholesterol, all that increase the risk of stroke and heart ... In advancement, this idea was further created, by a researcher named Berthold and his examinations on cockerels done in 1849. He expelled the testes from these winged creatures, and they lost a few of the attributes basic to the male of their species, including sexual capacity. In this way, we knew as right on time as 1849 that the testicles worked to elevate what we consider to be essential male sexual properties; at the end of the day, they are what "make men into men". Berthold additionally found that if the testicles were uprooted and after that transplanted to the stomach area, the sexual capacity of the winged animals was to a great extent unaffected. At the point when the fowls were analyzed, it was found that no apprehensive associations were shaped, yet a limitlessly broad arrangement of capillarization occurred. (1) This gave solid confirmation that "the testes follow up on the blood" (2) and he further inferred this blood then systemically affected the whole living being. Anabolic Steroid history, along these lines, can be really said to have made its initial step with this straightforward arrangement of tests. Later, in 1929 a method to deliver a concentrate ...
