How are you?
Are you ready for another module?
Today, you will read selections and give the details that support
the big idea.
Good luck and have fun!
In the two preceding modules, you have learned the two kinds of
main ideas – the implied and explicit.
In this module, you will learn that there are sentences in a
paragraph that give small ideas to explain the main idea. Such
sentences are supporting details.
Identify the sentence that best supports the given heading. Write
the letter of the correct answer on your paper.
1. Every summer, we would go to my grandfather’s farm for a
vacation.
a. We would stroll in malls and go to the parks.
b. We would climb trees and gather fruits.
c. We would play videogames and ride in the ferris wheel.

running, to win and enjoying the suspense if the
vote is closed. 4. The following day will be a good
time to play video games. 5. No matter who wins,
an election is a special occasion.

1. The locust is a destructive insect. 2. It is an
enemy of farmers. 3. It can be delectable meal.
4. A swarm of locusts descending on a rice field

6. When this happens, there will be a failure of
ice crop, and shortage of food or hunger for the
people.

central meaning or purpose of the main idea.

SUPPORTING DETAILS
a. Manuel A. Roxs was glad when the Japanese forces left the
Philippines. The Filipino people were free again. With the help of
the people and several agencies, Roxas rebuilt the country.
b. Manuel A. Roxas won in the first Philippine election after World
War II. In this election, Roxas ran against Sergio Osmeña for the
presidency.
c. Manuel A. Roxas came from a wealthy family. After finishing his
early education, he went to college at the University of Manila.

Then he studied law at the University of the Philippines. When he
took the bar examinations for lawyers, he got the highest score
among the examinees.
d. During World War II, Roxas fought the enemy as a general in the
Philippine Army. Captured by the enemy and taken to a prison
camp, he gave courage to most of the prisoners of war. The
Japanese saw how people respected him. So, they made him
serve in the government. While serving in the government, Roxas
did his best to help the people get better treatment from the
Japanese. At the same time, he kept in touch with the members
of the underground. He was a clever soldier and prisoner.

reading the papers.
3. My grandmother is loving and caring.
a. She stays in her room whenever we visit her and
grandfather. She seldom talks to us.
b. She shows her love and affection openly by kissing our
cheeks whenever she meets us. She prepares delicious food
everytime we visit her.
c. She hates children. She doesn’t want us to make noise. We
are so afraid of her.
4. Arnold’s family lives in a slum area.
a. They own a mall in the community. His family had traveled
to different countries.
b. His father is a construction worker. His mother, a
laundrywoman, has to take care of eight children.
c. They have swimming pool in their backyard. His father is a
bank manager.
5. Once upon a time, there was a man, true and kind.
a. He hunted all the animals in the forest.

b. He kidnapped all the children in the streets and had them
sold to wealthy couples who do not have kids.
c. He was generous and friendly as somebody dear in the
family. People called him “Friend”.

In the two preceding modules, you have learned the two kinds of main ideas – the implied and explicit. In this module, you will learn that there are sentences in a paragraph that give small ideas to explain the main idea. Such sentences are supporting details. Identify the sentence that best supports the given heading. Write the letter of the correct answer on your paper. 1. Every summer, we would go to my grandfather’s farm for a vacation. a. When this happens, there will be a failure of ice crop, and shortage of food or hunger for the people.

They give us clues about the topic and help us comprehend the material better. A good paragraph should include details that will help explain the central meaning or purpose of the main idea. The Japanese saw how people respected him. So, they made him serve in the government. While serving in the government, Roxas did his best to help the people get better treatment from the Japanese. Mercilessly, he did it just for fun. b. He kidnapped all the children in the streets and had them sold to wealthy couples who do not have kids. c.
