Module 39
A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
INFERRING DIFFERENT OUTCOMES
49
Hello dear learner. Here is another day given to us to learn
another skill. We shall be together as we learn this skill.
This module is still on inferring. In the previous modules you
learned how to make guesses and to predict outcomes. This time you
will learn more about the skill.
Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow.
To the Learner
Let’s Try This
Let’s Learn This
In form and feature, face and limb,
I grew so like my brother
That folks got taking me from him
And each for one another
One day (to make the matter worse)
Before our names were fixed,
As we were being washed by nurse,
We got completely mixed.

c. They will both enjoy.
3. What do you think will happen if they will grow older?
a. They will both have the same fate.
b. They will be successful.
c. They will be mistaken for the other.
The answers are:
1. a 2. a 3. c
• Is it easy to make guesses?
o It can be very easy if you will make use of the pattern of
events.
o They will serve as clue.
Let’s read the paragraph below.
Let’s Study This
Chona read the notice on the bulletin board about a
tryout for a National Heroes Day play. She wanted to be in that
play! She was in grade six and wanted to graduate with
honors. Her grades from grade one had often been the highest
in her class, and she knew she had a chance to graduate as
one of the top three. But it was not enough to have high
grades. She had to show leadership and be active in curricular
activities. She wasn’t worried about leadership. She was the
president of the Reading Club.
51
• What will Chona do after reading the notice?
o She will probably proceed to the tryout.
• Why do you think she will do this?
• What if she will not be in the honor list?
The phrase/sentence that says:
She wasn’t worried about leadership.
She was the president of the Reading Club.
The two sentences give us the signal that she is assured of the
leadership award.
So, even if she will join the tryout she would still be in the honor
list.
You have drawn guesses based on the events presented. These
are called conclusions. The skill is on drawing conclusions.
This time let us try if you can draw conclusion out of the events.
Let’s Do This
The boys fell on the food. They ate as they did at
home where everyone sat on the floor and ate from
banana leaves. The boys reached out across each other
for food, smelled the strange foods first, and spat out
what they didn’t like.
Efren was just as ignorant as the other boys. But
one swift glance had assured him that there was more
than enough food-that there was no need to grab. He
looked at the queen. Why, she was spreading a white
square of cloth on her lap! She was using the metal
tools near her plate to cut the meat and put a piece into
her mouth.
52
1. What did Efren do after observing the queen?
a. He followed as the boys did.
b. He followed what the queen did.
c. He did not eat at all.
2. If the queen were to choose a boy who would live in the palace to
be trained as the prince, who would she choose?
a. the boys
b. neither of the boys
c. Efren
What’s your score?
Here’s another exercise for you!
Read the situation and answer the questions that follow.
1. What must have caused the sound of tiny scurrying feet?
a. mice
b. cats
c. dogs
Let’s Do More
Nena climbed the ladder toward the trapdoor
and slowly pulled herself inside. She saw the sacks
of rice all about and when she tried to stand, there
was a loud bang behind her. Then all was dark. A
sound of tiny scurrying feet and squeking from
behind the sacks made her jump on top of the
nearest thing she could feel.
53
2. What do you think Nena will do once more once she finds out
what made the sound?
a. She would sleep.
b. She would run outside the room.
c. She would cry.
Finished? Try checking it against the Answer Key.
This time we are going to answer the final test.
But before that, let us remember this.

In the previous modules you learned how to make guesses and to predict outcomes. This time you will learn more about the skill. Read the poem below and answer the questions that follow. To the Learner Let’s Try This Let’s Learn This In form and feature, face and limb, I grew so like my brother That folks got taking me from him And each for one another One day (to make the matter worse) Before our names were fixed, As we were being washed by nurse, We got completely mixed.

The answers are: 1. a 2. a 3. c • Is it easy to make guesses? o It can be very easy if you will make use of the pattern of events. o They will serve as clue. Let’s read the paragraph below. Let’s Study This Chona read the notice on the bulletin board about a tryout for a National Heroes Day play. She wanted to be in that play! She was in grade six and wanted to graduate with honors. Her grades from grade one had often been the highest in her class, and she knew she had a chance to graduate as one of the top three. But it was not enough to have high grades. She had to show leadership and be active in curricular activities. She wasn’t worried about leadership. She was the president of the Reading Club.
  • 4. 51 • What will Chona do after reading the notice? o She will probably proceed to the tryout. • Why do you think she will do this? • What if she will not be in the honor list? The phrase/sentence that says: She wasn’t worried about leadership. She was the president of the Reading Club. The two sentences give us the signal that she is assured of the leadership award. So, even if she will join the tryout she would still be in the honor list. You have drawn guesses based on the events presented. These are called conclusions. The skill is on drawing conclusions. This time let us try if you can draw conclusion out of the events. Let’s Do This The boys fell on the food. They ate as they did at home where everyone sat on the floor and ate from banana leaves. The boys reached out across each other for food, smelled the strange foods first, and spat out what they didn’t like. Efren was just as ignorant as the other boys. But one swift glance had assured him that there was more than enough food-that there was no need to grab. He looked at the queen. Why, she was spreading a white square of cloth on her lap! She was using the metal tools near her plate to cut the meat and put a piece into her mouth.

She saw the sacks of rice all about and when she tried to stand, there was a loud bang behind her. Then all was dark. A sound of tiny scurrying feet and squeking from behind the sacks made her jump on top of the nearest thing she could feel.
  • 6. 53 2. What do you think Nena will do once more once she finds out what made the sound? a. She would sleep. b. She would run outside the room. c. She would cry. Finished? Try checking it against the Answer Key. This time we are going to answer the final test. But before that, let us remember this. Directions: For each of the situation, you give your conclusion.
