Features Of A Operating System
An operating system, also known as OS, is a software on the hard drive that allows the hardware of
a computer to communicate and operate with the computer software. The OS is the most important
software running on a computer because it handles the memory, processes and all of its software and
hardware. The OS helps coordinate all the programs that can access your CPU, memory and storage
so that each program gets what it needs. Without the operating system a computer and its software
would be completely useless. Figure 1 depicts the OS programs that lie between the applications
software and the computer hardware. It also shows how the application software links with the OS

o Several programs can be in operation at once. o Found in Microsoft's Windows and Apple's
MacOS. Multi–user: o Multiple users to take advantage of the computer's resources at the same
time. o Determines if each program is using sufficient and separate resources so if there is a problem
with one user it wouldn't affect all of the users. Operating systems come preloaded on any computer
you purchase and it is possible to upgrade or change the OS. There are three Operating Systems that
will be explained further on, Microsoft Windows, Chrome OS, and Android. Android is different
than Microsoft Windows and Chrome OS because it is an operating system for mobile phones and
tablets. Microsoft Windows or Windows OS is a computer operating system developed by the
Microsoft Corporation to run PCs and was introduced in 1985 and is one of the most dominate
operating systems for personal computers today. Windows OS provides a graphical user interface or
GUI, virtual memory management, multitasking and support for many devices. MS DOS was one of
the earliest operating system for consumers. Windows was seen as a graphical user–interface or GUI
that allowed users an easier and more visually pleasing way to use MS–DOS. Windows is different
than other OS because they were able to have various windows operating more than one program or
process simultaneously on the computer screen. Figure 2

The Operating System Of A Computer
The Operating System of a computer. How does it work many say, what does it do other say. The
operating system or some people in the world also call it the "OS," which mean the same. The OS is
the first program that gets installed and booted on to a new computer. The purpose of an operating
system is so that the end–user can interact with the computer and hardware, helping him/her use the
right software/apps needed depending on what operating system they are using. The OS helps you
multi task on you PC, so you can run multiple software at the same time. The function of a operating
system gives commands to the hardware and also tells how much resources to use from the
hardware to complete the needed tasks. The OS manages all the connected hardware in your PC
such as hard drives, a mouse, keyboard, displays a cursor on the screen which allows you to
navigate threw the system much easier. Now a days we see fancy and colorful screens with a bunch
of icons and windows that users use to help get around files and other programs assisting them to
complete their daily tasks. The operating systems of the 21st century are easy to navigate because
most operating systems now have a GUI which stands for Graphical User Interface, which allows
users to see icons, windows, folders, files systems and much more instead of just a command line
with black and white blinking text like back in the older days. For example, lets say you want to
transfer your pictures from your smartphone to you

What Is A Operating System?
What is a operating system? An operating system is the most essential software that is placed in a
computer. It achieves the computer 's memory and procedures, and the software and hardware. Also,
it importantly allows you to interact with the computer itself even if you cant speak the computers
language. It provides mutual services for computer programs. Some examples of operating systems
are Windows (vista, 7), Mac OS, Haiku, Linux, BSD. Command line operating systems Some
examples of command line operating systems are Linux and DOS. DOS, also known as disc

A great example of a GUI that uses a control panel is Windows 7. What is machine and peripheral
management? The Peripheral management manages peripheral device by conveying them
commands in the devices own code. Every peripheral device has its own specific code. One
language is binary. For example, in Linux OS, it is the process of turning inputs into outputs. Some
peripheral devices are keyboards, mouse, webcams etc. What is file management? File management
consists of files that are placed in an area of storage and where you can name your file regarding its
content and place it where ever you want. It is the way toward looking after files, reports into
classifications and subcategories as wanted by a client. Essential parts of file management are
arranging, naming and grouping PC information. What is meant by customising the desktop?
Operating systems allow you to customise your desktop which means you can adapt specific
features on the user interface. This means the look can be changed to your preference. Also, it is a
handy way to organise/ navigate your work whilst adding your own look. For example, you can
change your background picture to your preference. It could be your national flag, your favourite
colour or even favourite car. On the picture to the left my favourite car is a Lamborghini in green.

Unit 2 Assignment 1 P2/M1
What is an operating system?
An operating system is software that communicates with the hardware and it allows other programs
to run it. Operating systems is the structure that allows you to communicate with computer hardware
in a communicating way , without an operating system you wouldn't be able to tell the computer to
do anything and it won't have any instructions to follow.
Purpose of an operating system:
Operating system controls the hardware and software properties of the system in a computer these
properties include things like processer, memory and disk space. Computers must have an operating
system to run other programs also an operating system does basic tasks such as looking and
recognizing the input from the keyboard and also sending output to display on the screen , keeping
track of files and directories on the disk and controlling the disk drivers and printers.
The purpose of an operating system, a purpose of an operating system is memory management this
process happens when a computer searches for a memory to programs that run in the same time.
Virtual memory is a data storage that will keep separate memory addresses accessed before by the
user, this process will increase the amount of RAM and transfer data to the secondary storage.
Virtual memory can have an impact on how well computer will work because of its storage.

The Windows 7 Operating System
Welcome to An introduction to the Windows 7 Operating System. This activity will help you
understand the operating system's purpose and learn the skills necessary to successfully navigate
through the basics of Windows 7. After completing this activity, you'll be able to: Describe the
purpose of an operating system, Develop skills related to navigating the Windows operating system,
and Relate operating systems to hardware and software programs. An operating system is a network
of software that acts as the manager for all hardware and software on your computer. The operating
system manages and interacts with the computer hardware, peripherals like your mouse and
keyboard, device drivers, and applications software. The computer's OS (operating system) acts as
the main resource manager. An operating system acts as the master controller for all computer
hardware and peripherals and manages resources. In computer terms, resource refers to any
computer system component that's required to carry out a task. For example, the computer's
processor is a resource. The operating system manages the processor to ensure inputs, outputs, and
other processing tasks operate successfully. Another example of a resource is your computer mouse.
The operating system manages how the mouse and its cursor interact with the computer screen
including toolbars and menus. Every operating system simultaneously manages multiple resources.
For example, successfully printing a document requires

The Operating System ( Os )
The operating system (OS) has two view–points it provides services to:
1. User view
2. System view
User view: From user point of view operating system should be convenient and easy to use and
interact with. It should be better performance vice. Following are the two, some of important
services provided by the operating system that are designed for easy to use computer system.
a) Program Execution: The major purpose of the operating system is to allow the user to execute
programs easily. The operating system provides an environment where users can conveniently run or
execute programs and as well as able to end programs. Running programs involves memory
management (the allocation and de–allocation memory), device management, processor ... Show

sensors, motion detectors etc.). Almost all programs require some sort of input and produces output.
This involves the use of I/O operations. The operating system hides the low level hardware
communication for I/O operations from the user. User only specifies device and the operation to
perform, and only see that I/O has been performed (i.e. choosing one of the printer in office for
printing service). For security and efficiency, user level programs cannot control I/O operations.
Therefore, the operating system must facilitate these services.
System view: From a system point of view operating system should allocate resources (use system
hardware) in a fair and efficient manner. This includes algorithms for CPUs scheduling and avoiding
deadlocks etc. Following are two services for system hardware.
a) Resource Allocation: Modern computers are capable of running multiple programs and can be
used by multiple users at the same time. Resources allocation/management is the dynamic allocation
and de–allocation by the operating system of (hardware) including processors, memory pages, and
various types of bandwidth to the computation that compete for those resources. Operating system
kernel, in which all these functions, algorithms and services reside, is in charge of taking care of
resource allocation. The objective is to allocate resources so as to optimise responsiveness subject to
the finite resources available.

1. Introduction to Operating System:–
Computer is a somewhat complex machine. The world has become accustomed to so many choices.
One of the major choices in the modern era is the "Operating System (OS)". Operating systems are
the central software component to any computer. The main brands of operating system are;
Windows Mac OS, Sun Solaris, UNIX, DOS and Linux. Each brand has its own take on what makes
up an operating system. Windows is the most commonly used operating system around the world.
The most common advantage about Windows is its simplicity. It is now very easy for an
inexperienced person to grasp the concept and use the computer with this operating system on it.

Its current best–selling products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft
Office suite of productivity software.
Starting in 1980, Microsoft formed an important partnership with IBM that allowed them to bundle
Microsoft's operating system with computers that they sold, paying Microsoft a royalty for every
sale. In 1985, IBM requested that Microsoft write a new operating system for their computers called
OS/2; Microsoft wrote the operating system, but also continued to sell their own alternative, which
proved to be in direct competition with OS/2. Microsoft Windows eventually overshadowed OS/2 in
terms of sales. When Microsoft launched several versions of Microsoft Windows in the 1990s, they
had captured over 90% market share of the world's personal computers.

Virtualization–based security is the key feature added in Windows 10. VBS uses software– and
hardware–enforced mechanisms to create an isolated, hypervisor–restricted, specialized subsystem
for storing, securing, transferring, and operating other sensitive subsystems and data. In short, VBS
makes it very difficult for attackers to mess with core components of the operating system. A very
small, low–level operating system kernel runs in the VBS subsystem. Nothing else unsigned by
Microsoft is allowed to be injected or to execute. The computers that best take advantage of VBS
must contain virtualization–based chips and hardware extensions, including CPU virtualization
extensions (such as Intel Virtualization Technology and AMD–V), Input–Output Memory
Management Units (such as VT–d or AMD–IOV), and Second Level Address Translation.
Another thing which excites me more about windows 10 is Secure booting. Windows Vista
inaugurated secure booting: It used BitLocker and the TPM chip to protect the boot process.
Windows 7 debuted Unified Extensible Firmware Interface – UEFI, which replaced the highly
vulnerable traditional BIOS, and Windows 8 incorporated secure boot protections added by the
newer UEFI versions. UEFI and Windows work together to ensure that the hardware and

Implementing An Operating System Migration
In the next coming months, Sojourner Inc. plans on implementing an operating system migration.
Our desktops are still running on Windows XP. Needless to say it is time for an upgrade in operating
systems. The IT department looked at 3 different operating systems: Microsoft's Windows 8.1,
Apple's Mac OS X Yosemite, and Linux's Ubuntu. The categories analyzed were compatibility, ease
of use/transition, security, stability, technical support, and cost. Compatibility Compatibility of our
new operating system will decide if we have to switch utility/office software and change
drivers/hardware. With Windows owning a majority of the operating system market, almost every
software and piece of hardware will work with Windows. The most we would ... Show more content

Transition to Windows 8.1 would be fairly seamless, probably requiring some training slides to
show and explain some of the new features. Macs are well known for their sleek style and clean
design. They pride themselves on being very user friendly when compared to Windows. No matter
how easy it is to pick up Mac's operating system and features, old habits die hard. There would be a
learning curve, but not much more than going from Windows XP to Windows 8.1. Most employees
should be able to feel fairly comfortable after 1–2 weeks. Ubuntu is considered to be one of Linux's
more "user friendly" operating systems. It tries to incorporate a lot input through the GUI interface,
but it is still more complicated to pick up then Windows or Mac. Ubuntu does require a great deal
computer knowledge and firm grasp of using command line interface. The user cannot go "mouse
happy" and click everything. Once a user does have a good understanding of Ubuntu CLI
commands it can unlock the operating system to its full potential. Acquiring that level of
understanding will take most of our employees a fair amount of time. We would have to consider
training classes. Depending on how well each employee is able to pick it up, it could be weeks
before they are comfortable maneuvering around Ubuntu. Free training classes can be found online,
but the valuable work time lost due to the

The Pc And Its Operating Systems
The PC and its Operating Systems The information technology field is a field that covers a vast
amount of technologies and ideas that have evolved to be much more than what they were during
the infancy of the technology movement. Perhaps the greatest innovator and most recognizable face
of the field is Bill Gates, the creator of the Windows operating system. Windows revolutionized the
way the public interacted with their personal computers and catapulted the devices into the majority
of American's homes. Running counter to Windows, and taking a completely open source route for
ease of access and distribution is Windows rival Linux. Linux has a very different approach to how
the PC should operate and had a number of different versions that are tailored to individual user's
needs. All of these different operating systems have at least one thing in common however. The
ability to run on a personal computer. The personal computer, or PC, the personal computer is a
general–purpose computer that make it useful for individuals and are intended to be operated by an
end user. Bill Gates was born October 28th, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. Gates showed an early
interest in the world of computing, writing his first software program at age 13 and helping a group
of programmers computerize their schools payroll system ("Encyclopedia Brittanica"). Taking his
love and interest for the world of computing even further, Gates created his first company Traf–O–

Operating Systems : Operating System
There are dozens of operating systems out in the wild, each designed and optimized for different
things. This paper will be focusing on one such optimized operating system named Raspbian. This
operating system is a derivation of the more well–known operating system Debian. More precisely,
Raspbian is a modified and optimized port of Debian's Jessie build. As this paper goes on, readers
will discover that since Raspbian is a direct descendent of Debian Jessie, it inherits most of Debian's
traits.
To begin, the name Raspbian comes from two separate pieces. The first is its parent operating
system, Debian. Debian is an operating system created by The Debian Project that makes use of
either the Linux kernel or the FreeBSD kernel. Raspbian derives from Debian in that it was
originally designed to be a port of the "ABI ARM Hard Float Port", also known as the "armhf" port,
which was in itself a port of Debian Wheezy. The reason for the double port of Debian is the other
half of Raspbian's name: the Raspberry Pi. The original Raspberry Pi was released by The
Raspberry Pi Foundation in February 2012. Originally designed in Europe, the hope was "that
teachers, developers and the government will come together to get the device into the hands of
children who may not have access to a computer at home or would not be allowed by parents to
'muck about with it'" (Cellan–Jones). The Raspberry Pi Foundation was met with immediate success
not only in its original goal, but far beyond it. The

Operating Systems ( Os )
Operating systems (OS) communicate with and work directly with many devices, including the
monitor, keyboard, disk drivers, mouse, network adaptor, speakers, and so on, also known as
peripherals. Some OS's exchange information with specific hardware (chips) inside the computer
that controls these devices. Each type of OS has limitation on how it functions. When looking at the
type of OS that is appropriate for a given use, you must consider what type of functionality you
want, such as speed, graphics, or advanced applications. If you know that you will have a propensity
to install the latest software available on the market and often, you would want to consider having a
newer OS so that it will support the software. Case project 1–2: Device Drivers Device drivers
communicate text onto a screen, translate mouse movements, and can talk with network printers in
an office. Device drivers allow the OS to communicate with the attached devices. For example, if an
office gets a new monitor for a computer or adds a printer, you can install/download a specific driver
for that device and the OS with communicate and allow you to use the new device. Device drivers
can be added at a later time. Certain drivers are easier to have already installed versus trying to find
the correct one from a manufacturer and installing it personally. Case Project 1–3: Choosing a New
Server This small planning committee should consider how many users will immediately be using

1. What is the definition of an Operating System?
ANSWER: Operating system exist on the grounds that they offer a sensible approach to tackle the
issue of making a usable processing framework. The major objective of computer systems is to
execute user programs and to make user issues simpler. Computer hardware is developed to this
objective. Since exposed hardware alone is not simple to utilize, application programs are produced.
These programs require basic operations, for example, those controlling the I/O devices. The regular
capacities of controlling and assigning assets are then brought together into one bit of software: the
operating system. Another way we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

WINDOWS: It is more compatible, good technical support , also huge quantity of function. Cons of
windows are we need to buy anti–virus program to protect from viruses, windows vista and 7 are
very slow and also requires lot of memory, processor, disc space and is much expensive.
APPLE: It is virus protective and more reliable it runs on apple computers which are less prone to
hardware and software crash. Cons of apple are, it is more expensive than windows, only available
on apple computers, only few programs run on Mac, so less compatibility.
3. How is the difference between a single processor and a multi processor computer?
ANSWER: Single processor has one real processor, whereas multiprocessor framework has many
real processors, both can have more than one center for every processor. Multiprocessors which are
a part of the system need a great deal of handling force. These systems have been costly and not
required by ordinary home or office clients. As the usage increased it became normal that one

Windows operating system is different from Mac OS or Ubuntu or any other operating system, and
it takes a considerable amount of time for an individual to get used to a different operating system.
According to stackoverflow [3], an online community for programmers, 26% of programmers use
Mac OS as their operating system, and 21.7% use Linux as their operating system. Companies want
to hire computer scientists familiar with the technology stack of the company, and having
experience in the company's operating system is a very valuable skill. Also, using a UNIX based
operating system build a certain set of skill sets, such as experience in using a UNIX terminal, that
companies consider a must have skill for computer scientists. By having Windows as the operating
system for computer science labs, NCUS is not providing the opportunity for students to experience
using a different operating system, that might be operating system they use after graduation.
Unfamiliarly with the work computer's operating system, not knowing how to perform simple tasks
fast enough could have a significant effect on the programmer's work and the overall productivity of
the company. Therefore, addressing this issue will make the transition between university and
working at a technology firm smoother, and help students build a skill set that will be useful in the
future. Background Many companies are switching from Windows to UNIX based systems,

When it comes to productivity we all want the best value for the best amount of performance. When
we speak about technology, we usually think of expensive products and large brands. In this
scenario I will be comparing two different types of computer processors. On one end, we have the
lower end cheaper processor, and on the other we have the performance, more expensive processors.
As technology advances, the processes that we use to manage that technology become more
demanding, creating the need for new software and efficient processors. "The central processing unit
or (CPU) is the heart of your computer and is used to run the operating system as well as all the
programs." (Chris Hoffman, CPU Basics: multiple CPU's, cores and hyper threading explained.)
With so much power in a single chip, we have created a powerful piece of technology that can be

Explain The Purpose Of An Operating System
Explain the purpose of an Operating System: Operating Systems manage hardware and provide
services for application software; this means that it makes it easier for users to interact with different
software and hardware available on the computer. The most common operating systems are
Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. While each OS is different, they all provide a graphical user
interface GUI a GUI allows users to click and drag objects with a mouse instead of entering text at a
command line. Characteristics of an Operating System: Multi–User allows multiple users to use the
same computer at the same time or different times. The most common and most well known OS that
use s multi–user is Windows 7. Multitasking is performing more than one task at the same time, a
task being a program. Multiprocessing is the support of more than one processor at the same time.
Applications in a multi–processing system are broken into smaller routines that run by themselves.
Multithreading is the operating system process to manage its use by more than one user at a time or
manage multiple tasks by the same user without having the need of multiple copies of the program
running on the computer. GUI (Graphical User Interface) allows users to click and drag objects with
a mouse instead of entering text at a command line. A GUI uses windows, icons, and menus to carry
out commands for instance opening files, deleting files, and moving files. Main four functions of an

Operating systems is a crucial component of the whole computer machine operating systems are
used to run the computer without this the computers will be hopeless the back of he computer is
where operating system is the OS of the computer is usually in Rom chip so its stored in there going
back to when I said that it's a crucial part on computer that's because it enables your computer to
have a desktop and also it enables it to run other pieces of software what are called programs so
basically it manages your computers hardware and software operating system manages software by
telling hardware what to do and what no to so basically without this no user would be able to
communicate or interact with software programs so basically when you click on a program on your
computer or browse something it automatically finds outs and sends commands to the program by
this the program makes use of the CPU and the memory of your computer. By this it will
communicate the output of the programs to h e user by utilizing the monitor screen. Good thing
about operating system is as you as you are logged on it automatically keeps all kind of programs on
your computer running so when you do click on a certain program it uploads in no less than a
minute or 2. Moreover your computer must have the suitable device drivers for the software to work

An operating system is software that manages resources and provides common services. Most
applications that are completed by an operating system usually require the operating system to
function and run properly. Operating systems can be found in so many everyday items, from cellular
devices, to videogame consoles, to super computers, and web servers. The operating system should
act as an intermediary between the input and output of hardware. The operating system that I have is
Microsoft Windows 7 which uses a 64–bit operating system.
The Windows operating system started out simply as Windows 1.0, which was just a graphical
personal computer operating environment. It was first released on November 20, 1985, and was the
first step in a long line of Windows operating systems. The 1.0 ran on only a 16–bit shell that ran a
whole slew of graphical applications for the windows program. Unfortunately, the windows 1.0 was
received poorly by critics, who felt that it, did not meet their expectations. It had performance
issues, and focused too much on the mouse, which wasn't very popular at the time. Despite all
criticism, The Microsoft windows 1.0 proved to be an important milestone in the Microsoft
windows line of operating systems. A couple years later, in 1987, the windows 1.0 was succeeded by
the new Windows 2.0 program, which was still 16–bits, yet it allowed the user to overlap
applications, which was previously thought

meets the needs of our kind of business operations. Such an Operating system gives our business
opportunities to render services uniquely. It makes our organization to have its own way of dealing
with its customers giving us a good reputation on the market. For a business operating system to be
more effective, it must go beyond the people who are doing and managing the work. As a result of
transcending beyond, it makes the system to be more valuable. Since online business operates

In the Distributed Operating System, different computers are connected together. With this kind of
connection, the kind of topology in this system is hierarchical system. Hierarchical system topology,
involves a server/client pattern that is used by the databases, distributed systems, and web servers
(Grant, 2014). With this hierarchical system, information from different sources, root servers, flow
to the next servers. Here different clients are connected and are able to receive and send their
information.
To use this distributed operating system, it is important to provide training to the staff as well as to
the clients. In this, all the staff will have to attend a seminar where they will be given instructions on
how to use the new computer systems with the new operating system. For example, the staff will be
educated on how to handle information from the clients as well as how

Computer Operating Systems And The Computer System
The computer operating system is one of the biggest changes we are seeing in today's world. With
the rise of the cloud, digital software delivery and applications, the computer operating system is
playing catch up to these new trends. The center of the computer as always been the operating
system and the Graphical User Interface that comes with it. Computer operating systems have come
from a past of no User interface and being a command line base to the modern day Windows 8 and
Mac OS's of application based. If operating systems focus on Applications, cloud and digital
downloads for software, this approach will take the computer operating systems into the next twenty
years of computing. Computer Operating systems used to the center of a Vendors development. In
the modern era, mobile Operating systems have become the focal point with computer operating
systems taking the back seat. The computer operating system must match the experience and eco
system of the mobile devices. Focusing on the Graphical user interface will help create that
experience, from the application tile to the scrolling and how a user handles features will be key on
developing the computer operating system of the future. The problem with a classical approach to
computer operating systems is the fact that being mobile and being connected to data do not go

Operating Systems What is an operating system The operating system is responsible for controlling
all of the tasks and processes. Operating systems consists of a collection of programs, with each
having a specific task allocated to it. These programs are designed to make the computer system run
as efficiently as possible. The most commonly used operating systems are Mac OS, Windows and
Linux. What Operating systems do · Allow users to interact with the machine (e.g. selecting

operating systems have features which are unique unto themselves. Although there may be
arguments as to which one of these three operating systems is better it really all comes down to what
features are needed for each user. This paper will describe the features that each of these operating
systems has to offer. First, Microsoft Windows. Microsoft began its dominance in the early 80s by

Despite this Mac has continued to gain popularity in the market. It 's programs have proved to be
more stable than Windows, as a result of this hardware for the systems generally last longer as well.
This is due to the fact that Mac systems have more features that monitor and regulate the activities,
temperatures, and functions that can wear a system down faster. Mac computers also become known
for their vivid aqua screen. Because of this many graphic designers, special effects editors, and even
musicians have switched to using Mac computers. Even despite their price, which to this day
remains higher than the competition, Mac still shares a steady part of the market and its popularity
continues to grow. One of the biggest things that has kept Apple very competitive in the market is
their version of the tablet. They have also developed the iPhone and the iPod. Apple was the first to
not only create these devices but also they made these devices work with each other in a way that no
other company has done with any of their devices before. Three operating systems discuss in this
paper each have their advantages and disadvantages from one another. The biggest advantage for
Microsoft is the widespread use and compatibility with most every type of program out there. If you

By doing this it means it's significantly quicker to find previously stored files, and being able to
create separate folders and manage those means that all your data can be more organised, whereas if
you don't name files/organise them, you're at risk of losing files and wasting time trying to find

means that you know exactly what that document is, and if the user were having to upload an

Corporation, released its first version of Windows in 1985 and it was simply a Graphical User
Interface which was offered as an extension to existing MS–DOS. In 2001, Microsoft released
Windows XP, which offered various windows packages with multiple editions for business,
consumers, developers etc. In 2009 Microsoft developed Windows 7, and its interface was similar to
that of Vista and it met different modest system requirements and better speed improvement. In
2012, Windows 8 was released with new User Interface and number of enhancements. It has better
advantages like multi–core processing, touch screens and other input methods. In 2015, Microsoft
released Windows 10. The OS is designed in such a way to have a consistent interface across
various user devices like PC's, laptops, phones and tablets. Design Principles underlying the

Operating Systems And Software Systems
An operating system is a system software that manages and control all interaction between a
computer hardware and software. There are several types of operating systems, for example, multi–
user, multitasking, single user and more. The first ever created OS date back in the 50's. As
computer and technology progress over time operating system kept evolving. Among the commonly
used operating systems of today is Linux, a Unix–like type of OS. Linux creation begins in 1991 as
a software kernel and part of a small project developed by Linus Torvalds, a student from a
University in Finland. Under GNU (general public license), the software was available as a free and
open source and gave everyone the right to access, change and modify its original design. Because
of the way it is designed it can run on multiple platforms such has Intel, Alpha and more. Like many
open systems, Compared to more expensive operating systems, Linux was an economical alternative
for cost–conscious companies that needed to quickly create Web–based applications. When more
developers are able to provide input about a system, it becomes easier to fix flaws and bugs that
hinder performance; roll out improvements; increase the speed of system evolution; and combine an
application 's components in new and exciting ways not intended by the original developer.

announced that the mascot for Linux wound be a penguin [2]. This is because Linus was bitten by a
penguin on his visit to the National Zoo & Aquarium at Canberra [2]. However, an original draft of
today's well known mascot had been provided by Larry Ewing based of this description [2].

3.1 Introduction:
The operating system Linux is an open source version of UNIX [6]. In 1992 [8] Linus Torvalds, who
was a computer science student –at the University of Helsinki– [6], was the one who started this
operating system.
Linux is used on variety of hardware (e.g. on workstations, mid–and high–end servers and on
gadgets), which makes it unique [6]. Linux keeps maintaining its position in the market due to the
hard work of both employees and volunteers [6].
Previously, UNIX systems used batch jobs, which run a process until it is finished and then the next
process will run [8]. What UNIX used is known as "non–preemptive scheduling" [8]. After years,
preemptive scheduling was used to run processes in parallel by switching between them [8].
3.2 Scheduling Technique: Linux scheduler is based on Time–Sharing Scheduling technique [7],
which means "It can effectively schedule tasks that have strict timing requirements". The CPU is
divided into small sections, which allows many process to run simultaneously [7]. Time–sharing
depends on "timer interrupts" [7].
3.2 Scheduling Priorities:
The priority ranges differ for real– time tasks and normal tasks in Linux scheduler [1]. In real–time
tasks: priorities vary from 0 to 99. In normal tasks: processes' priorities range from 100 to 139.
Processes who have higher priorities are "numerically" lower than others [1].
Normal tasks are appointed priorities "based on their nice

organizations. Collaboration with the government helps in cost sharing in the infrastructures and the
expenses spent on administration. This make strengthens security and helps in improving efficiency.
Interacting with also non–profit companies helps in tapping complementary skill and abilities in
leadership and control of the organization goals. Teaming up with these organizations helps to share

Operating System And The Computer System Essay
Introduction: An operating system is a vital component of the computer system. The common and
simple devices like refrigerators and microwave ovens does not have an operating system. The
complex systems which handle several components, functions and processes usually have an
operating system. The operating system is like the brain of a human being, the brain is an essential
organ in the body of human being which sends signals and helps functioning of the human body.
Our intelligence, attitude, emotions and senses defines our presence, all these are possible because
of our brain. In similar manner, "Operating System" (OS) is the power behind a computer system. In
other words, operating system is brain of the computer and processor is the heart of the computer. A
computer is the concatenation of several hardware parts. The operating system manages computer
hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs and other application
software. Application programs or software usually require an operating system to function. For
basic hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts

categorize these security issues in relation to the operating systems security functions, more
specifically, the role of trusted OS and the Next Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB). Any

different depending on the different time the process was run. Logical separation can be achieved in
different ways. The most common use of logical separation is when a system administrator creates a

Uses of Virtualisation in Operating Systems
Virtualisation in operating systems is a wide ranging subject relating to many topics within
operating systems. Waldspurger and Rosenblum define virtualisation in their article I/O
virtualization as "decoupling the logical from the physical, introducing a level of indirection
between the abstract and the concrete." [1] In this essay I will briefly outline some of the many types
of Virtualisation as well as talk about benefits and limitations virtualisation in general.
Due to the term 'virtualisation' referring to so many different areas within operating system, talking
about the History of this topic is very hard. In Modern Operating Systems, Andrew Tanenbaum
states "visualization, which is more than 40 years old" [6]. This book was published in 2009,
implying that virtualisation started roughly in the 1969. However, spooling which is an example of
I/O virtualisation existed in IBMs SPOOL system. IBM copyrighted the SPOOL system in 1960
suggesting Virtualisation started on or before the 1960s [7]. From the context of Tanenbaum's book,
it is clear that he is speaking of virtual machine technology which for the confines of this essay will
be considered a subset of virtualisation. Throughout the history of computers more virtualisation
techniques have been invented from spooling to virtualised I/O to virtual machines and other things
like RAID. When talking about virtualisation in operating systems, virtual memory is perhaps the

Vital to this choice is "who is the person." Like most operating systems, Windows NT casts the user
identity in a user account, a group of information about what the user or users of that account can
and cannot do on the system. Also like most operating systems, users can only increase services
under an account if they can exhibit they know its password. The most basic rule of Windows NT
security is that it provides no significant services and fulfills no specific request until it associates a
properly authenticated account with the password. When you physically log on, you specify an
account and its password. This represents your identity on behalf of all the programs you run during
your logon session. In Windows NT, there is no way to request local actions under another account.
Windows NT compared to other operating systems is now a legacy operating system. Both Windows
and Linux come in many varieties. All the varieties of Windows come from Microsoft; the various
distributions of Linux come from different companies. Windows has two main lines: "Win9x",
which consists of Windows 95, 98, 98SE and Me, and the "NT class" which consists of Windows

What Is An Operating System?
What is an operating system? [1] The low–level software that manages the hardware resources of a
computer in an efficient manner and schedule different tasks is known as an OS (operating system)
of a computer. Without an OS a computer is not able to do anything and it is useless. Main hardware
components of an operating system are; Main memory (RAM) which stores different
DataInstruction and execute them. Input/output devices (I/O devices) this includes as flash memory,
and keyboards etc. CPU controls operation of computer system and controls scheduling of different
processes and instructions. Bus this connects components together and carries information between
components An OS gives an environment in which is able to execute different programs, i.e. Use
memory, input/output (I/O), management of files and different computer resources, deciding
between various competing demands. OS is the most crucial part of a computer which handles the
software and hardware and all of computer 's memory and processes. Every part of main memory,
every file and processes is controlled by an OS An operating systems includes four essential
subsystem managers; Memory Manager Processor Manager Device Manager File Manager These
managers monitor their resources continuously which handles the scheduling processes during
which they de–allocate and allocate the resources. Users can directly interact with the operating

Operating Systems And Operating System
Operating Systems Every computer needs an operating system to operate. The operating system
controls everything that the computer does, the master controller. It is the gasoline of the computer.
According to Parsons and Oja (2014), they state that an operating system is "the integral part of
virtually every computer system. It fundamentally affects how you can use your computer" (p 184).
Most computers are bought with the operating system already installed. Once the computer is turned
on, the operating system does a "check" of the system, which includes the hardware of peripheral
devices attached. Once the check is complete, the operating system is loaded into the ROM of the
computer. There are several different operating systems that can run a computer system. Just like
software, the operating system has been upgraded to perfection over the years. Back in the earlier
years of computers, there was only one operating system. This was the well known , Disk Operating
System, also known as DOS. Looking back, DOS was a complicated operating system. Once a
computer was turned on, you would see a flashing MS DOS:. This was its way of telling you, that it
is ready for its next command. This is when you had to rely on the book. Because it did not provide
you with an on screen list of what you could do from there. You had to specifically type in the
command, of what you wanted to do next. However, the life of the computer changed forever with

Features Of A Operating System

  • 1. Features Of A Operating System An operating system, also known as OS, is a software on the hard drive that allows the hardware of a computer to communicate and operate with the computer software. The OS is the most important software running on a computer because it handles the memory, processes and all of its software and hardware. The OS helps coordinate all the programs that can access your CPU, memory and storage so that each program gets what it needs. Without the operating system a computer and its software would be completely useless. Figure 1 depicts the OS programs that lie between the applications software and the computer hardware. It also shows how the application software links with the OS link with the hardware. Within the OS there is a supervisor ... Multi–user: o Multiple users to take advantage of the computer's resources at the same time. o Determines if each program is using sufficient and separate resources so if there is a problem with one user it wouldn't affect all of the users. Operating systems come preloaded on any computer you purchase and it is possible to upgrade or change the OS. There are three Operating Systems that will be explained further on, Microsoft Windows, Chrome OS, and Android. Android is different than Microsoft Windows and Chrome OS because it is an operating system for mobile phones and tablets. Microsoft Windows or Windows OS is a computer operating system developed by the Microsoft Corporation to run PCs and was introduced in 1985 and is one of the most dominate operating systems for personal computers today. Windows OS provides a graphical user interface or GUI, virtual memory management, multitasking and support for many devices. MS DOS was one of the earliest operating system for consumers. Windows was seen as a graphical user–interface or GUI that allowed users an easier and more visually pleasing way to use MS–DOS. Windows is different than other OS because they were able to have various windows operating more than one program or process simultaneously on the computer screen. Figure 2 ... • 3. The Operating System Of A Computer The Operating System of a computer. How does it work many say, what does it do other say. The operating system or some people in the world also call it the "OS," which mean the same. The OS is the first program that gets installed and booted on to a new computer. The purpose of an operating system is so that the end–user can interact with the computer and hardware, helping him/her use the right software/apps needed depending on what operating system they are using. The OS helps you multi task on you PC, so you can run multiple software at the same time. The function of a operating system gives commands to the hardware and also tells how much resources to use from the hardware to complete the needed tasks. The OS manages all the connected hardware in your PC such as hard drives, a mouse, keyboard, displays a cursor on the screen which allows you to navigate threw the system much easier. Now a days we see fancy and colorful screens with a bunch of icons and windows that users use to help get around files and other programs assisting them to complete their daily tasks. The operating systems of the 21st century are easy to navigate because most operating systems now have a GUI which stands for Graphical User Interface, which allows users to see icons, windows, folders, files systems and much more instead of just a command line with black and white blinking text like back in the older days. Operating systems is the structure that allows you to communicate with computer hardware in a communicating way , without an operating system you wouldn't be able to tell the computer to do anything and it won't have any instructions to follow. Purpose of an operating system: Operating system controls the hardware and software properties of the system in a computer these properties include things like processer, memory and disk space. Computers must have an operating system to run other programs also an operating system does basic tasks such as looking and recognizing the input from the keyboard and also sending output to display on the screen , keeping track of files and directories on the disk and controlling the disk drivers and printers. The purpose of an operating system, a purpose of an operating system is memory management this process happens when a computer searches for a memory to programs that run in the same time. Virtual memory is a data storage that will keep separate memory addresses accessed before by the user, this process will increase the amount of RAM and transfer data to the secondary storage. Virtual memory can have an impact on how well computer will work because of its storage. An operating system manages the hardware and software resources of the system. A computer must have an ... • 13. The Operating System ( Os ) The operating system (OS) has two view–points it provides services to: 1. User view 2. System view User view: From user point of view operating system should be convenient and easy to use and interact with. It should be better performance vice. Following are the two, some of important services provided by the operating system that are designed for easy to use computer system. a) Program Execution: The major purpose of the operating system is to allow the user to execute programs easily. The operating system provides an environment where users can conveniently run or execute programs and as well as able to end programs. Running programs involves memory management (the allocation and de–allocation memory), device management, processor ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... sensors, motion detectors etc.). Almost all programs require some sort of input and produces output. This involves the use of I/O operations. The operating system hides the low level hardware communication for I/O operations from the user. User only specifies device and the operation to perform, and only see that I/O has been performed (i.e. choosing one of the printer in office for printing service). For security and efficiency, user level programs cannot control I/O operations. Therefore, the operating system must facilitate these services. System view: From a system point of view operating system should allocate resources (use system hardware) in a fair and efficient manner. This includes algorithms for CPUs scheduling and avoiding deadlocks etc. Following are two services for system hardware. a) Resource Allocation: Modern computers are capable of running multiple programs and can be used by multiple users at the same time. Resources allocation/management is the dynamic allocation and de–allocation by the operating system of (hardware) including processors, memory pages, and various types of bandwidth to the computation that compete for those resources. Operating system kernel, in which all these functions, algorithms and services reside, is in charge of taking care of resource allocation. The objective is to allocate resources so as to optimise responsiveness subject to the finite resources available. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Starting in 1980, Microsoft formed an important partnership with IBM that allowed them to bundle Microsoft's operating system with computers that they sold, paying Microsoft a royalty for every sale. In 1985, IBM requested that Microsoft write a new operating system for their computers called OS/2; Microsoft wrote the operating system, but also continued to sell their own alternative, which proved to be in direct competition with OS/2. Microsoft Windows eventually overshadowed OS/2 in terms of sales. With the step–by–step installation guide, there's no need of technical knowledge for a nontechnical user. Virtualization–based security is the key feature added in Windows 10. VBS uses software– and hardware–enforced mechanisms to create an isolated, hypervisor–restricted, specialized subsystem for storing, securing, transferring, and operating other sensitive subsystems and data. In short, VBS makes it very difficult for attackers to mess with core components of the operating system. A very small, low–level operating system kernel runs in the VBS subsystem. Another thing which excites me more about windows 10 is Secure booting. Windows Vista inaugurated secure booting: It used BitLocker and the TPM chip to protect the boot process. Windows 7 debuted Unified Extensible Firmware Interface – UEFI, which replaced the highly vulnerable traditional BIOS, and Windows 8 incorporated secure boot protections added by the newer UEFI versions. Needless to say it is time for an upgrade in operating systems. The IT department looked at 3 different operating systems: Microsoft's Windows 8.1, Apple's Mac OS X Yosemite, and Linux's Ubuntu. The categories analyzed were compatibility, ease of use/transition, security, stability, technical support, and cost. Compatibility Compatibility of our new operating system will decide if we have to switch utility/office software and change drivers/hardware. With Windows owning a majority of the operating system market, almost every software and piece of hardware will work with Windows. The most we would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Transition to Windows 8.1 would be fairly seamless, probably requiring some training slides to show and explain some of the new features. Macs are well known for their sleek style and clean design. They pride themselves on being very user friendly when compared to Windows. No matter how easy it is to pick up Mac's operating system and features, old habits die hard. There would be a learning curve, but not much more than going from Windows XP to Windows 8.1. Most employees should be able to feel fairly comfortable after 1–2 weeks. Ubuntu is considered to be one of Linux's more "user friendly" operating systems. It tries to incorporate a lot input through the GUI interface, but it is still more complicated to pick up then Windows or Mac. Ubuntu does require a great deal computer knowledge and firm grasp of using command line interface. The user cannot go "mouse happy" and click everything. Once a user does have a good understanding of Ubuntu CLI commands it can unlock the operating system to its full potential. Acquiring that level of understanding will take most of our employees a fair amount of time. We would have to consider training classes. Depending on how well each employee is able to pick it up, it could be weeks before they are comfortable maneuvering around Ubuntu. The Pc And Its Operating Systems The PC and its Operating Systems The information technology field is a field that covers a vast amount of technologies and ideas that have evolved to be much more than what they were during the infancy of the technology movement. Perhaps the greatest innovator and most recognizable face of the field is Bill Gates, the creator of the Windows operating system. Windows revolutionized the way the public interacted with their personal computers and catapulted the devices into the majority of American's homes. Running counter to Windows, and taking a completely open source route for ease of access and distribution is Windows rival Linux. Linux has a very different approach to how the PC should operate and had a number of different versions that are tailored to individual user's needs. All of these different operating systems have at least one thing in common however. The ability to run on a personal computer. The personal computer, or PC, the personal computer is a general–purpose computer that make it useful for individuals and are intended to be operated by an end user. Bill Gates was born October 28th, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. Gates showed an early interest in the world of computing, writing his first software program at age 13 and helping a group of programmers computerize their schools payroll system ("Encyclopedia Brittanica"). • 23. Operating Systems : Operating System There are dozens of operating systems out in the wild, each designed and optimized for different things. This paper will be focusing on one such optimized operating system named Raspbian. This operating system is a derivation of the more well–known operating system Debian. More precisely, Raspbian is a modified and optimized port of Debian's Jessie build. As this paper goes on, readers will discover that since Raspbian is a direct descendent of Debian Jessie, it inherits most of Debian's traits. To begin, the name Raspbian comes from two separate pieces. The first is its parent operating system, Debian. Debian is an operating system created by The Debian Project that makes use of either the Linux kernel or the FreeBSD kernel. Raspbian derives from Debian in that it was originally designed to be a port of the "ABI ARM Hard Float Port", also known as the "armhf" port, which was in itself a port of Debian Wheezy. The reason for the double port of Debian is the other half of Raspbian's name: the Raspberry Pi. The original Raspberry Pi was released by The Raspberry Pi Foundation in February 2012. Originally designed in Europe, the hope was "that teachers, developers and the government will come together to get the device into the hands of children who may not have access to a computer at home or would not be allowed by parents to 'muck about with it'" (Cellan–Jones). The Raspberry Pi Foundation was met with immediate success not only in its original goal, but far beyond it. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Operating Systems ( Os ) Operating systems (OS) communicate with and work directly with many devices, including the monitor, keyboard, disk drivers, mouse, network adaptor, speakers, and so on, also known as peripherals. Some OS's exchange information with specific hardware (chips) inside the computer that controls these devices. Each type of OS has limitation on how it functions. When looking at the type of OS that is appropriate for a given use, you must consider what type of functionality you want, such as speed, graphics, or advanced applications. If you know that you will have a propensity to install the latest software available on the market and often, you would want to consider having a newer OS so that it will support the software. Case project 1–2: Device Drivers Device drivers communicate text onto a screen, translate mouse movements, and can talk with network printers in an office. Device drivers allow the OS to communicate with the attached devices. For example, if an office gets a new monitor for a computer or adds a printer, you can install/download a specific driver for that device and the OS with communicate and allow you to use the new device. Device drivers can be added at a later time. Certain drivers are easier to have already installed versus trying to find the correct one from a manufacturer and installing it personally. ANSWER: Operating system exist on the grounds that they offer a sensible approach to tackle the issue of making a usable processing framework. The major objective of computer systems is to execute user programs and to make user issues simpler. Computer hardware is developed to this objective. Since exposed hardware alone is not simple to utilize, application programs are produced. These programs require basic operations, for example, those controlling the I/O devices. Explain The Purpose Of An Operating System Explain the purpose of an Operating System: Operating Systems manage hardware and provide services for application software; this means that it makes it easier for users to interact with different software and hardware available on the computer. The most common operating systems are Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. While each OS is different, they all provide a graphical user interface GUI a GUI allows users to click and drag objects with a mouse instead of entering text at a command line. Characteristics of an Operating System: Multi–User allows multiple users to use the same computer at the same time or different times. The most common and most well known OS that use s multi–user is Windows 7. Multitasking is performing more than one task at the same time, a task being a program. Multiprocessing is the support of more than one processor at the same time. Applications in a multi–processing system are broken into smaller routines that run by themselves. Multithreading is the operating system process to manage its use by more than one user at a time or manage multiple tasks by the same user without having the need of multiple copies of the program running on the computer. GUI (Graphical User Interface) allows users to click and drag objects with a mouse instead of entering text at a command line. Most applications that are completed by an operating system usually require the operating system to function and run properly. Operating systems can be found in so many everyday items, from cellular devices, to videogame consoles, to super computers, and web servers. The operating system should act as an intermediary between the input and output of hardware. The operating system that I have is Microsoft Windows 7 which uses a 64–bit operating system. The Windows operating system started out simply as Windows 1.0, which was just a graphical personal computer operating environment. It was first released on November 20, 1985, and was the first step in a long line of Windows operating systems. The 1.0 ran on only a 16–bit shell that ran a whole slew of graphical applications for the windows program. Unfortunately, the windows 1.0 was received poorly by critics, who felt that it, did not meet their expectations. It had performance issues, and focused too much on the mouse, which wasn't very popular at the time. Despite all criticism, The Microsoft windows 1.0 proved to be an important milestone in the Microsoft windows line of operating systems. A couple years later, in 1987, the windows 1.0 was succeeded by the new Windows 2.0 program, which was still 16–bits, yet it allowed the user to overlap applications, which was previously thought ... • 60. The Operating System Linux 3. Linux 3.1 Introduction: The operating system Linux is an open source version of UNIX [6]. In 1992 [8] Linus Torvalds, who was a computer science student –at the University of Helsinki– [6], was the one who started this operating system. Linux is used on variety of hardware (e.g. on workstations, mid–and high–end servers and on gadgets), which makes it unique [6]. Linux keeps maintaining its position in the market due to the hard work of both employees and volunteers [6]. Previously, UNIX systems used batch jobs, which run a process until it is finished and then the next process will run [8]. What UNIX used is known as "non–preemptive scheduling" [8]. After years, preemptive scheduling was used to run processes in parallel by switching between them [8]. 3.2 Scheduling Technique: Linux scheduler is based on Time–Sharing Scheduling technique [7], which means "It can effectively schedule tasks that have strict timing requirements". The CPU is divided into small sections, which allows many process to run simultaneously [7]. Time–sharing depends on "timer interrupts" [7]. 3.2 Scheduling Priorities: The priority ranges differ for real– time tasks and normal tasks in Linux scheduler [1]. In real–time tasks: priorities vary from 0 to 99. In normal tasks: processes' priorities range from 100 to 139. Processes who have higher priorities are "numerically" lower than others [1]. Normal tasks are appointed priorities "based on their nice ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Operating System And The Computer System Essay Introduction: An operating system is a vital component of the computer system. The common and simple devices like refrigerators and microwave ovens does not have an operating system. The complex systems which handle several components, functions and processes usually have an operating system. The operating system is like the brain of a human being, the brain is an essential organ in the body of human being which sends signals and helps functioning of the human body. Our intelligence, attitude, emotions and senses defines our presence, all these are possible because of our brain. In similar manner, "Operating System" (OS) is the power behind a computer system. In other words, operating system is brain of the computer and processor is the heart of the computer. A computer is the concatenation of several hardware parts. The operating system manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs and other application software. Application programs or software usually require an operating system to function. For basic hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between application software and the computer hardware, although the hardware is directly accessed and executed by application code or software directly, the hardware will frequently make a system call to an OS function or be interrupted by it. In simple terms, operating systems track the activities of hardware and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What Is Operating System Security Operating systems and security is a broad topic that encompasses software flaws and malware, buffer overflows, virus and worms, malware and detection, software reverse engineering, digital rights management, secure software development and others; but for the sake of simplicity, we will discuss how we can reduce or mitigate that attacks by applying operating system security. We will categorize these security issues in relation to the operating systems security functions, more specifically, the role of trusted OS and the Next Generation Secure Computing Base (NGSCB). Any Operating System must provide some degree of separation, memory protection, and access control. On the other hand, since we rely on a trusted OS for security, it must or ... US military NIPRNet (black) which is non–classified internet protocol router network must be approximately one meter separated from the SIPRNet (red) which is a US military secret network (Howard). Temporal separation uses time a means of separation. Tasks are executed one after the other and this eliminates any concurrence issues that may emerge. Security requirements are totally different depending on the different time the process was run. Logical separation can be achieved in different ways. The most common use of logical separation is when a system administrator creates a virtual machine or a sandbox for testing. For more security virtual machine are not assigned a network adapter and are secluded to a VLAN without internet access and separated from other company's resources. Cryptographic separation is done by encrypting data and the end user must have a mechanism to decrypt the messages rendering useless to anyone who does not have the key. There have been several attempts by hackers to hijack sessions, use well know attacks like the Man in the Middle attack, replay attacks and much more to decrypt these messages but more secure means of communication has also been introduced such as using digital signatures and using ... • 70. Uses Of In Operating Systems Uses of Virtualisation in Operating Systems Virtualisation in operating systems is a wide ranging subject relating to many topics within operating systems. Waldspurger and Rosenblum define virtualisation in their article I/O virtualization as "decoupling the logical from the physical, introducing a level of indirection between the abstract and the concrete." [1] In this essay I will briefly outline some of the many types of Virtualisation as well as talk about benefits and limitations virtualisation in general. Due to the term 'virtualisation' referring to so many different areas within operating system, talking about the History of this topic is very hard. In Modern Operating Systems, Andrew Tanenbaum states "visualization, which is more than 40 years old" [6]. This book was published in 2009, implying that virtualisation started roughly in the 1969. However, spooling which is an example of I/O virtualisation existed in IBMs SPOOL system. IBM copyrighted the SPOOL system in 1960 suggesting Virtualisation started on or before the 1960s [7]. From the context of Tanenbaum's book, it is clear that he is speaking of virtual machine technology which for the confines of this essay will be considered a subset of virtualisation. Throughout the history of computers more virtualisation techniques have been invented from spooling to virtualised I/O to virtual machines and other things like RAID. This created a wide range of application varieties for Linux, Slackware was released, and Debian project, which is presently the primary community distribution was established. In 1994, Torvalds released Linux version1.0 and SUSE and Red Hat published their Linux distributions version 1.0 (Duffy, 2003). In 1995, Linux was ported to Sun SPARC and to DEC Alpha and over the subsequent years it's ported to other platforms. In 1996, Linux kernel version 2.0 was released and it became a serious option for a lot of companies since it was now able to serve several processors while still using Symmetric multiprocessing (kerrisk, 2010). In 1998, many companies announced support for Linux and Netscape made Linux gets the interest of the technical press when it publicly released its source code. Like most operating systems, Windows NT casts the user identity in a user account, a group of information about what the user or users of that account can and cannot do on the system. Also like most operating systems, users can only increase services under an account if they can exhibit they know its password. The most basic rule of Windows NT security is that it provides no significant services and fulfills no specific request until it associates a properly authenticated account with the password. When you physically log on, you specify an account and its password. This represents your identity on behalf of all the programs you run during your logon session. In Windows NT, there is no way to request local actions under another account. Windows NT compared to other operating systems is now a legacy operating system. Both Windows and Linux come in many varieties. All the varieties of Windows come from Microsoft; the various distributions of Linux come from different companies. Windows has two main lines: "Win9x", which consists of Windows 95, 98, 98SE and Me, and the "NT class" which consists of Windows NT, 2000 and XP. • 76. What Is An Operating System? What is an operating system? [1] The low–level software that manages the hardware resources of a computer in an efficient manner and schedule different tasks is known as an OS (operating system) of a computer. Without an OS a computer is not able to do anything and it is useless. Main hardware components of an operating system are; Main memory (RAM) which stores different DataInstruction and execute them. Input/output devices (I/O devices) this includes as flash memory, and keyboards etc. CPU controls operation of computer system and controls scheduling of different processes and instructions. Bus this connects components together and carries information between components An OS gives an environment in which is able to execute different programs, i.e. Use memory, input/output (I/O), management of files and different computer resources, deciding between various competing demands. OS is the most crucial part of a computer which handles the software and hardware and all of computer 's memory and processes. Every part of main memory, every file and processes is controlled by an OS An operating systems includes four essential subsystem managers; Memory Manager Processor Manager Device Manager File Manager These managers monitor their resources continuously which handles the scheduling processes during which they de–allocate and allocate the resources. • 78. Operating Systems And Operating System Operating Systems Every computer needs an operating system to operate. The operating system controls everything that the computer does, the master controller. It is the gasoline of the computer. According to Parsons and Oja (2014), they state that an operating system is "the integral part of virtually every computer system. It fundamentally affects how you can use your computer" (p 184). Most computers are bought with the operating system already installed. Once the computer is turned on, the operating system does a "check" of the system, which includes the hardware of peripheral devices attached. Once the check is complete, the operating system is loaded into the ROM of the computer. There are several different operating systems that can run a computer system. Just like software, the operating system has been upgraded to perfection over the years. Back in the earlier years of computers, there was only one operating system. This was the well known , Disk Operating System, also known as DOS. Looking back, DOS was a complicated operating system. Once a computer was turned on, you would see a flashing MS DOS:. This was its way of telling you, that it is ready for its next command. This is when you had to rely on the book. Because it did not provide you with an on screen list of what you could do from there. You had to specifically type in the command, of what you wanted to do next. However, the life of the computer changed forever with the birth of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
