Bicycle Safety in Focus: Preventing Fatalities and Seeking Justice
Evaluation of three magazine covers
1. This is a front cover of an R&B music magazine
and the masthead is written in a bold font
which is also bright orange making it stand out
from the page and this attracts the audience
and represents the company. The colour of the
masthead and many of the other cover lines
and features are in the same colour and this
goes with her hair colour making the house
style mostly orange but also black and white.
This house style makes the front cover look
neat and organised as there are not too many
colours. The picture is a medium long shot and
has been manipulated so that her head goes
over the masthead making her stand out, this
image also follows the theory of the male gaze
as she is wearing bright pink lipstick attracting
men. Next to the image is the models name
‘Nicki Minaj’ and this would attract fans and it
also tells us what the magazine contains
drawing the audience to buy the magazine.
The target audience would be teenagers/young
adults and we know this as Nicki Minaj fans are
mainly these ages.
2. Billboard magazine has a white masthead
with colours that fill in the letters ‘b’, ‘a’
and ‘d’, these are a variety of colours
however the house style is white and
yellow which stand out from the image as
the model Trey Songz is wearing completely
different colours so there is a contrast in
the colours. The image is a medium close
up of a famous R&B star which will attract
the target audience of teenage or young
adult females, as these are mainly his fans.
We also see his name across his chest
showing the audience that there is an
important article about him inside.
3. The masthead of ‘Q’ magazine always stays the
same which is a white Q on a red background
however the house style follows the masthead
colours because of the cover lines which are all
either red, white and some grey. The black
background brings out the masthead and cover
lines as they stand out. Also the model Cheryl
Cole is wearing red lipstick and heavy black
make up also going along with the colours of
the front cover. The image is a close up
showing clearly the model and making the
colours in her make up stand out with the
cover lines. Also Cheryl Cole is a very famous
pop singer so this would attract audiences from
teenagers to young adults and mixed genders.
The image also follows the theory of the male
gaze because she is wearing red lipstick.
