3. Colour Themes: Very few colours have been used, this shows the simplicity. On this
magazine the colours are very natural. The connotations for the colour pink is femininity,
love or calmness. When you think of the colour green, your brain goes straight to being
very fresh, relaxing and peaceful. Also, the connotations for white is light and positive.
This is why they have used these colours so the audience feels chilled when they read it.
Main Image: The background image is of a celebrity which immediately stands out. Miley
Cyrus is standing with her hands above her head in a kind of sultry pose. The celebrity is
using direct address by looking into the camera. This is a form of interaction as the
audience may feel connected with the image of the front cover. Miley is the main focus
on the magazine which is why they have used a simple background. The image show
that she is a new person as she is thankful for the end of her relationship with actor Liam
Hemsworth.
Blobs & Stars:
The blobs are tiny, but they have used the colour white again for the text so then it
stands out from the green background. The blob is there to show the audience that
there is more articles and information going on inside the magazine.
Cover line: They have used an elegant font for the cover line which is her name. They
have also used a darker pink so then it doesn’t clash with what the artist’s outfit and the
colour of the masthead. The ‘UNPLUGGED’ is bold and all in capitals so then it stands
out more. The font goes from elegant to bold. This will drag their audience in because
they will want to know what they are uncovering about Miley Cyrus. It gives the audience
some brief information to what is the article is going to be about.
Masthead: All of Billboard’s magazines have the same style masthead which shows
their work is consistent. They have kept it the same with the colour scheme throughout
the front cover and used a light shade of pink. They have edited Miley Cyrus’ arm and
made it so her arm is on top of mast head, this is so the audience can see all of her.
The mast head is huge and takes up most of the left side up, this is so everyone will
recognise it. Also, it is all in lower case which shows they are informal.
Puff: At the top of the magazine they have
used a puff which says ‘DUMPSTER
FYRE Inside the festival fiasco of the
century’. They have put the first two words
in capitals to emphasise the festival.
They also use the word ‘century’ which
shows it’s going to be one in a million.
This gives another reason for their
audience to buy this particular magazine.

Main Image
As you can see there is no barcode on the magazine.
This could because of two reasons:
1) It could be on the back of the magazine
2) This magazine could be of internet use only
5. Masthead: They have used two different colours, hot pink for the word ‘girl’ to show the feminine side and then
black to show that you go from one colour that’s black to a more feminine colour when you’re a woman. There is
nothing fancy about the font that they have used. I think they wanted it to be bold and for the audience to be able
to see what it says without all the fancy writing.
Colour Themes:
The colours that
have been used are
very simple and
plain. They have
used a grey
background where
they could use any
colour and it would
go. The colours
they have chosen
are very bold
choices.
Blobs: The little paragraph
explaining Miley Cyrus’ job role on
Disney. They haven’t written much
for the blob, I believe this is
because the double page spread
before the big article.
I think they haven’t
added in a cover line
because they
wanted to keep the
page simple and
didn’t want too much
happening otherwise
the audience
wouldn’t know what
to read first.
Main Image: It is very clear to see that Miley Cyrus is the main focus
on this double page spread. By having one bold image makes it most
effective because it allows there to be one main focus on the page.
Another thing is the clothes Cyrus is wearing, it goes with the colour
scheme as she is wearing black clothing and then her hair is down so
we don’t know what kind of top she is wearing.
6. Main Image: When you go onto the billboard website the first thing you see are these
vibrant colours and the words ‘HOT 100’. It’s a video showing you the ‘Top Headlines’ for
music. This is good for those people who like to see the new upcoming songs. Their
audience even has a choice different options to the side of the website. This will keep their
audience very occupied.
Colour Schemes: The colours that billboard have used are energetic. The video is the first thing that pops
out as they have used a big size and a bold blocky font. However, the colour scheme is simple as they have
used the colours black, white and blue. When using the colours black and white, it means that you can use
any other colour because it will go and won’t look odd.
Advertisements: Above the video is an advert. This just gives the page more
character and fills the page up too.
Target Audience:
As billboard’s audience is
16-26, the magazine
provides their audience with
the latest updates from the
charts using various types of
genres.
To widen the range of their
audience it is acquired to
those who listen to different
genres such as; rock, metal,
pop, R n B etc.
7. Main Image: Adele is the main focus on this front cover for Vogue magazine. She
is in sultry pose with her chest on full show and her hand on her head where you
can see her tattoo on her hand. The celebrity is using direct address by looking
into the camera. This is a form of interaction as the audience may feel connected
with the image of the front cover.
Colour Themes: The colours that have been used on this are very seasonal. Loads
of colours have been used such as different shades of blue, greens, red, purple and
white. Blues and greens are very natural colours whereas red and purple are very
eye catching. As there is that light blue in her dress which makes her eyes stand out
more. Adele is even wearing a very light pink lipstick. All these colours link in with
the cover line where they have used the word ‘spring’. Behind Adele is a green
pillow which doesn’t clash with the colours on her dress. It still brings out the slight
bit of green in her dress.
Cover Line: ‘SPRING’S EXTRAORDINARY’ is put into bold and smaller than the
word ‘CHANGE’ underneath which clearly with attract their audience’s attention.
Blobs & Stars: The blob clearly links with in the celebrity on the main image. It is
all in big text near her head so the audience know that the article will be about
her. They have carried on with the consistency of having the top lines of the text
in bold and then the bottom text thinner.
Masthead: ‘VOGUE’ speaks words without reading the whole magazine. Vogue
keeps it regular by having the same masthead on all magazines. The colour of
the word is white and it never changes. They have placed the main image and
the masthead in place so the audience can still see Adele’s tattoo which says
‘angel’.
Puff: At the bottom of the magazine it says ‘Will Hillary Clinton make history?’
First of all, they have used a navy blank box to cover the bottom so then the text wouldn’t
blend in with her dress. Also, the text ‘Hillary Clinton’ is in bold whereas the rest of the text
isn’t. This gives emphasise on the name.
9. Main Image: A close up of Emma Watson on this Vogue double page. She is looking directly
into the camera. There is a clear contrast between Watson’s face and her lipstick. As you can
see her lipstick is bright red whereas her face is quite pale. The sticker on the net is kind of
mimicking Watson’s lips. There is a net on the lower part of her face. This could connote to
passion or sexuality which could also link to underwear.
Masthead: ‘Emma’
is in italics font,
this appears as
sophistication and
classy. But, her
surname is shown
in a bold and big
font in the colour
red. They have
used two different
colours for the
masthead, this
shows contrast as
the background is
white. It makes it
stand out. It shows
the combination
between the red
lips and the text.
Colour Connotations:
Red - connotes to power, desire or love
White - connotes to goodness or innocence
Black - connotes to elegance, formality or mystery
Baby pink - connotes to sweet, romantic or feminine
Colour Themes: They have used the colours black, white, baby pink and red.
They have added
three little images
at the side of the
magazine. There
is a consistent
colour theme
throughout the
whole spread
which has carried
on in the images.
It images stand
out a lot as the
model is wearing
black and the
background is
white. As the
images are small,
it doesn’t take any
attention away
from the article.
10. Main Image: It starts off with four clear images linking to fashion. It is a
very simple home page compared to other websites. There is not much
colour going on apart from the images. The images relate to the top
stories in the fashion industry. At the top of there is a bar containing
seven options to whatever the audience is looking for.
Colour Themes: Black, white, blue, red, pink
Colour Connotations:
Red – connotes to energy, strength or power
Black – connotes to elegance or mystery
White – connotes to light, innocence or successful
Hot Pink – connotes to playfulness
Target Audience: 20-40 year old women
who are aware of all the novelties of
fashion and beauty. This magazine
appeals to that audience as it’s about
the life of society, fashion and lifestyle.
The magazine offers various articles that
inform women about latest news on
fashion trends, fashion shows, fashion
festivals and news from designers and
models.
11. Main Image: There are multiple celebrities on this front cover,
but the main celebrity heat has used is Beyoncé. The main
image will be the main story. They have used an image which
makes Beyoncé look like she has just got out bed and then
they use the cover line to cover the rest of her up.
Cover Line: Personally, I think the text in yellow ‘shocking
rumours’ and ‘blow the lid off her perfect marriage’ all links in
with bit about Beyoncé looking shabby on a magazine cover.
To show her bad state about these ‘rumours’. This way it
creates interest for the reader to see what’s going on in a very
famous celebrities life.
Colour Themes: As you can see, there is a lot of colour going
on within this front cover. This is very repetitive for a heat
magazine. Some of the colours that have been used are red,
white, black, pink, brown, yellow. They have used these
colours as they will stand out from each other.
Masthead: It’s huge! This is consistent for heat magazines
though, it grabs the audiences attention straight away. They
have put Jordan’s head in front of the masthead so then you
can still see what is going on.
Puff: There is one in the corner of the page. They have
used a yellow circle to make it stand out as well as keeping
the colour theme. This makes their audience want to buy it
even more because they are getting something free or
discounted if they buy this particular magazine.
Blobs: This makes the magazine
look like there’s more going on
inside to read.
13. Colour Themes: There are not many colours that are going on throughout this
Some of the colours that have been used are red, black, red, pink, blue, yellow
and grey. They have kept the theme simple.
Masthead: The words ‘Ella Jarvest’ is highlighted and the only thing that your
eyes focus on first because they have put a red box behind her name. The rest
of the masthead is plain and not as stood out as the rest.
Main Image: The image covers the whole of the page. Jarvest is not looking at
the camera but is holding a microphone in her hand. Her image is in black and
white. The microphone fits in her article as she is a singer or enjoys singing.
The singer is wearing nothing fancy but simple like the colour theme.
They have added a
little quote in the top
corner as this will
be in the article and
will be important.
This is why they
have taken it out.
Also, this could
make the reader
want to read the
article.
14. Main Image: Caroline Flack is the main focus on this
website. They have picked out an image that flatters her
at the Brit Awards as the article is about a ‘loved-up
selfie’. There are other articles at the bottom of the Flack
story.
Advertisements:
On the side of the
article, there is a
perfume advert.
This will attract their
audience into buying
the product.
Colour Themes: Red, black, white and grey
Colour Connotations:
Red – connotes to energy, strength or power
Black – connotes to power or elegance
White – connotes to goodness or innocence
Grey – connotes to cool or neutral
Target Audience: 15-34 years old for both genders. This magazine appeals to their audience as it is a
British based entertainment magazine. Every issue contains celebrity gossip, entertainment news,
fashion trends and tips. There is also movie and music reviews and TV listings.
15. Initial Reaction/Summary
I was so excited when I found out the last rotation was Print. I was waiting for
this rotation since the beginning. I believe this area is my strongest point but I
guess we’ll see at the end.
The bit I love about Print is creating and putting together images on Photoshop.
Making a magazine isn’t actually that easy. As I did Level 2 I have some
experience and I have also now done loads of research regarding magazine
front covers, double page spreads.
However, there was a new bit added to it all: websites! I haven’t done a website
since high school but then again that was more the technical side of it. This is
more the creative side of it. Still, I am very excited to experiment and start
creating websites.
17. Rationale:
At the start of the rotation I had to produce a front cover magazine, double page spread and a
website. I will be doing mine all on Indian food. As this was an experiment, I got to try out
different ideas on each product. Some skills I’ve got from producing idea on Photoshop are to
know what each tool does and how to use them. One thing that is quite handy on magazines
covers is when you put the mast head behind the person or objects for that particular image to
stand out and be more eye popping for the audience.
Audience:
My target audience is 25-40 for both genders. I think they both will like to try these recipes
and enjoy the food in the end. The social status for my short film is C2DE. This means
anyone can read the magazine and gander the website; I’ve picked this social status out
because I think they will enjoy the magazine about Indian food and different recipes. I have
decided that my psychographic should be emulator. This audience will appeal to my film as
they will like succeed in trying the recipes. One part of the magazine that this audience will
like is the fact that they are traditional recipes that have been home cooked for many
generations. The price is very reasonable for a food magazine too. Some magazines such
as a BBC Good Food magazine are £19.99. Another, Indian food magazines are rare unless
you are trying to look for particularly otherwise people will search it up or use a cook book.

18. Evaluation:
I plan to evaluate my final product by going back through my work and analysing how I’ve used
my research to produce my magazine and website and if it has been helpful. Another way, I will
be evaluating my work is by looking at the time I’ve spent and if I’ve used it wisely. The best
way to see if your work was good is to talk about the strengths and weaknesses aesthetically.
This will help in the future if I produce another short film. Finally, as the audience is the most
important, I need to talk about how it appealed to them.
Project Concept:
For my magazine, I am doing an Indian food magazine. The front cover will be of some
Indian desserts or maybe an Indian drink. I’m thinking of keeping the front cover nice and
simple. I want to concentrate more on the food than the articles. Then, there is the double
page spread which is going to be a simple recipe so then everyone is able to follow. There
will be an image well presented on there that I will take myself. Afterwards, I will be
producing a website with three separate pages. There will be a home page, recipes page,
images and reviews page and then finally a cooking techniques page. I will get people to try
the recipe and see what they think and then get them to write a review. Some of the recipes
that I will be adding into the magazine will be from my parents. This means that the food will
be traditional and the recipe will be a simple step by step. I have done some research into
Indian magazines. Some of them magazines have given me some ideas into what I want to
do further. For example, the main image on the double page spread and how to layout the
whole thing.

21. F r o n t C o v e r – C o n f e c t i o n s
I looked at a few food and dessert magazines. I picked out an image that I thought looked good for a
magazine. I chose this image because I liked the how the spoons were laid out on the table.
I used the text tool to write ‘free 4 week menu guide inside’ and then realised it look quite bare. So, I
added in a circle to put behind so the text would stand out more. I have placed this in the corner.
When it came to the background, I thought about it and I didn’t know what to do to it. So, I used the
burn tool to make certain parts of the cloth darker.
I have put a website, issue of the magazine and the price at the top where the masthead is. I have put
them there because it is more noticeable. For them to stand out even more, I decided to add a stroke
on all them. I did this because you couldn’t see the orange before so the black border made it better.
The ‘How Safe is Your Kitchen?’ has a light stroke too just so it didn’t match in with the background
image. I have also put the words ‘safe’ and ‘your’ in a larger text size as it is very important for your
kitchen to be clean so I have emphasized this.
Some improvements that I could do next time is to add more images to the cover to make it look more
full whereas now there is a lot of space near the spoons.
22.
23. D o u b l e P a g e S p r e a d – C o n f e c t i o n s
I used InDesign to produce the double page spread. I have not used InDesign
before but after getting it explained, it was easy to use.
First, I looked for images that were portrait rather than landscape as it was easier
to use a portrait image for this so then it didn’t look blurry. I used Loren Epsom to
just fill the gaps in so then it looks like a magazine. As this was only a practise I
didn’t need to put much work in except to think of something to write at the top.
For my final product I will be doing a food magazine so I thought it would be
relevant to do an experiment food magazine and to see where I’m going wrong or
what I need to add.
Some improvements that I found I could do was set the text out more like a
recipe and cook book style. Also, the second was a lot harder to try and make it fit
in. So, the next time I do this I need to look for an image that is at a certain angle
and as I’m taking the photos myself, it’ll be a lot easier because it means I can
test out some shots.
24.
25.
26. W e b s i t e – C o n f e c t i o n s
I’ve made a website before but that was more the technical side of it so
when I used Wix, it was all new to me. It didn’t take long to understand
how to use it after getting it explained. I started off by laying it out and
seeing where I wanted everything. This was so I could see if I needed to
change anything around if it didn’t look right.
As we were producing two pages, I did a home page and an about us
page. On the home page I added in a slideshow and picked out images
that Wix had that I thought was appropriate to my theme. I put the most
work into the about us page as I made up a little story of what I think
people want to hear.
Some improvements that I could do next time is use my own images that I
have either taken myself or got from the internet. Another, thing I could do
is pick a different colour scheme. For ‘Confections’ the colour theme fitted
in but for my final product I will have to think about what kind of colours I’m
going to pick for it to fit in.

42. Schedule
Week One: Research & Proposal
I have to research three different genre front page magazines, double page spreads and websites. After, I included an initial
reaction/summary of how I felt when the next rotation was print. The proposal is where talked about the audience, rationale, project
content and evaluation.
Week Two: Front Page Test & Reflection, Double Page Test & Reflection, Website Test & Reflection
This is also called production reflection, where I practise to try-out more skills on Photoshop. The reflection is then talking about what
features from that experiment I would use for my final product.
Week Three: Idea Generation, Flat Plans, Style Sheets, Website Map, Additional Planning & Copy
The idea generation is a mind map where I explored three ideas and then chose a final idea. Flat plans were drawings using boxes
and other shapes to show what your products are going to look like. For style sheets I will be looking at different colours that I might
use for my final product.
WEBSITE MAP
I had to complete additional planning which was putting together a schedule, talking about health safety and then a contingency plan
just in case anything happen during the process of creating the main product. The copy had to be 700 words and this had to be from
the double page.
Week Four: Front Page Production, Double Page Production & Website Link
For at least two weeks, I will be starting to produce my front cover, double page and website. Within these two weeks, I will be taking
photos of particular foods to add to my products.
Week Five: Evaluation
The last week will be the evaluating week. This will be focused all on the final product and any last work you want to improve or
needs improving.
43. Contingency Planning
P o t e n t i a l I s s u e : S o l u t i o n :
The computer might crash If this happens, you should move to a
different computer. However, make sure
you are saving your work throughout.
In case my work doesn’t save on the
computer
You should make sure you save your work
on a USB or email it to yourself.
When producing my character, it might not
work out
If you find yourself in this situation, you
should not give up but try creating it again
and if that doesn’t work then try a different
design.
There’s a possibility that the software you
are using might crash
When this happens, try reloading the
software. Another thing you can try it
closing the software and reopening it.
No availability of no computers Try going to the library on either floor to find
a computer. Or try another classroom.
In case you haven’t kept to the deadline It is possible to do some of that work before
the deadline. But if you are struggling to
keep to the deadline, then use your
weekends and your free time.
44. Health & Safety
Potential
Issue
How will the issue be
avoided?
You may be getting back issues If this does happen then try adjusting the
seat to the right position for it to support
your back
By using the mouse in an uncomfortable
way, your Arm and wrist might start to ache
To not let this happen, make sure there is
enough space between keyboard and desk
When looking at the computer for a while, it
is possible to start getting a headache
You can tilt the screen for a comfortable
head position
After a while, your legs might start cramping
or needing a walk
If your feet do not reach the floor, then a
footrest will make you feel more at ease
There may not be enough room under the
desk
You should make space for postural
changes which means there should be no
objects under the desk
If you don’t have a footrest, this may mean
you can’t see the screen
The best thing to do is adjust your seat
height
46. Article on Double Page
Lady fingers were a delicacy when I was younger, I used to wake up and smell the aroma of my mum cooking it. Ever since then,
I vowed to the delicacy of the world, this is what I want to share with you.
I have grown up with Indian food all my life, from my mum teaching me which foods are best suited for each mood and how to
teach my children the ways of my mother. Over the recent years, I’ve taught my daughter how to make chick peas and my
mother’s famous masala paneer. This is a goat’s cheese meal which is adored by my whole family and my friends.
A common question from my friends is ‘when’s the next time we can come round for your food again?’ Clearly my mother taught
me well as my food is very popular. On a recent journey which I took has made me realise that I should start to share these
family recipes with you. This journey was when I went back home. I hadn’t seen my family since a family event which took place
years ago. This time I decided to go back by myself.
On this journey back, I wanted to go around India and try out some new tastes and spices. Everyone cooks differently so I
thought it would be interesting to see the difference between how I cook and how they cook.
I started my travelling to a place called Maharashtra which is near Mumbai. The food there was beautiful. It’s amazing how the
same use of food can taste different. I met a guy called Arjun and he showed me some of the street food places. I think street
food is going to be a new thing back in the UK. Arjun called for a tuktuk and this is where the real journey began. Whilst, living in
India, I never got the chance to actually travel around India. I had always wanted to but it just didn’t happen at the right time.
Arjun took me to his house, it was nothing extravagant but for the three of them it was perfect. They weren’t the richest family
going but for them they still called it home. His mother Manjit wanted to cook for me. So I sat down with his father Arnav and
started talking about his life in Maharashtra. He was saying how he had lived there for all his life and how he has been working in
the factory constructing metal for most of his life too. After speaking to Arnav about his life, it made me realise something about
my life that I’ve got it easy back in the UK with my wife and children. Arnav is content with so little yet for us in the UK we are
never satisfied with anything.
Finally, Manjit’s food was placed in front of me and I was definitely getting hungry with that smell of food. She had made me a
traditional masoor dhal, which are lentils. She served it beautifully with hot buttered chapatti’s.
So for me, it’s great to go back and tell my story and to teach some of these recipes that Arjun and his family have taught me.
Underneath is the recipe for the famous Dhal that Manjit made for me… enjoy making and eating it!
47. Recipe on Double Page
Ingredients:
400g masoor dhal (red lentils) soak over night
2 small onions chopped
3 chillies (finely sliced)
2 table spoons of chopped ginger
3 cloves of garlic finely chopped
Tablespoon of salt
Half tablespoon of turmeric powder (2 teaspoons)
2 teaspoons of cumin (jeera)
Garam masala (2 teaspoons)
Fresh coriander to garnish
2 tablespoons of oil
2 tomatoes chopped
Method:
Start with heating the oil in the pan
After, add the cumin seeds until they sizzle to a
brownish colour
You should be able to start smelling the aroma of the
cumin
Next, you should add the onions and cook until golden
brown
Then add the chillies, garlic and ginger to a paste
Don’t forget to add your tomatoes
Once this is all cooked add salt turmeric powder and
stir
At this stage you can add a little water
Drain the lentils, add to the masala, stir and then add
water above lentils and simmer
Need be add more water
If you would like a thicker consistency then use less
water and for a thinner consistency use more water
For garnish add some coriander
Best served either with basmati rice or chapatti
55. Research
• I researched three magazine front covers, three double page spreads and three websites and
analysed the images.
56. Planning
• I started off by creating two mind maps. One was for three ideas I had, talking
about the idea and expanding this to cover different aspects of what I could
create and the range off my ideas to develop. I also considered software and
hardware along with the the audience. I talked about what kind of images I
was going to use.
• Another piece of planning, was a mood board, this helped as I chose different
images to do with my product and it showed the different colours, fonts and
styles for my product. The next type of planning was producing a style sheet,
which I put down my ideas for colours, different fonts and some similar
images so then I had a visual of some of the products. I made sure I knew
what software I needed to use during the production, the resources I needed
were listed down and a contingency plan for things that might happen during
my production. This meant I had a back-up. I also, listed health and safety
issues just in case anything happened whilst in the studio or in general.
57. Time Management
• If I had additional time, I don't think I would use it wisely. In my schedule I had
how many days I was going to spend on each product. As I had produced a
magazine front cover before and a double page spread it meant that I knew
what kind of tools to use. It was just the website that I had not produced
before. However, a good thing was that I put together some experiments so
then I knew what to do for the final product. I followed the schedule as much
as possible like times when I wasn't too sure on what I need to do.
58. Technical Qualities
• I have picked an Indian magazine to compare to my final
product. There are some similarities to my work and this
magazine. The blob '101 authenic recipes' makes the
audience want to buy the product more. More images at
the bottom whereas I have just used the main image and

59. Aesthetic Qualities
• I personally think my work looks good. I have used a wide range of colours to
keep it bright and vibrant and to keep the audience interested still. I believe
my work stands out. Most of the images that I have are images I have taken
myself. I used very simple colours for my double page sr
60. Audience Appeal
• I have done a front cover, double page spread and four pages on a website.
The topic was Indian food. I know a lot about this from my father as he's the
cook in the house. My target audience is 25-40 for both genders. I think they
both will like to try these recipes and enjoy the food in the end. The social
status for my short film is C2DE. This means anyone can read the magazine
and gander the website; I’ve picked this social status out because I think they
will enjoy the magazine about Indian food and different recipes. I have
decided that my psychographic should be emulator. This audience will appeal
to my film as they will like succeed in trying the recipes. One part of the
magazine that this audience will like is the fact that they are traditional recipes
that have been home cooked for many generations. The price is very
reasonable for a food magazine too. Some magazines such as a BBC Good
Food magazine are £19.99. Another, Indian food magazines are rare unless
you are trying to look for particularly otherwise people will search it up or use
a cook book.
