Framing an Appropriate Research Question 6b9b26d93da94caf993c038d9efcdedb.pdf
Eval question 1
1.
2. The song by Emma Stevens ‘Riptide’, has
a light-hearted country feel whilst also
being very fitting to the pop genre. This
allowed us to play around with our music
video ideas and to mix and match
conventions from different genres in
order to create the best video for our
chosen song.
3. Our artist, Emma Stevens, has very similar
traits to Taylor Swift, who is a pop/country
singer. Their similarities include playing
instruments, a similar appearance and a
similar sound. This allowed us to imitate
some costumes of Taylor Swift and also
some characteristics such as the ‘love
story’ narrative.
4. Goodwin proposed that some
conventions in a music video include:-
Editing on the beat
Protagonist image
Narrative and performance of the song
5. During the post-production stage of our music
video, we paid close attention to one specific
aspect of Goodwin’s theory which was editing on
the beat. This was to create a professional feel and
a flow of continuity which is vital in the making of a
music video.
Another aspect we focused on was the
relationship between the song and visuals. ‘Riptide’
is a song very much based on love, hence why we
had both a male and female character in our
video, who resulted in falling for each other at the
end of the song.
6. As mentioned in the previous slide, ‘Riptide’ is
about the relationship that the singer has with her
partner and the feelings she has for them.
The aforementioned similar artist, Taylor Swift,
focuses on the theme of love in a lot of her songs
and typically uses a male in the video also, which
inspired us to include a partner in ours.

7. Some people argue that location and famous
landmarks are beneficial in a pop video as it allows
the audience to get a feel of the area and they
would be able to imagine the atmosphere
because of the simulations associated with that
place.
For example, we included London landmarks in our
video which is associated with liveliness and ‘the
capital of the world’.
8. The costumes we used for our music
video were purely basic outfits as we
were attempting to recreate the
atmosphere of an ordinary teenage girl,
in order for our target audience to relate
to the video more easily.
9. They tend to range between 2 and a
half – 5 minutes as that is enough time for
the video to have important aspects
such as a narrative, but short enough for
it to prevent the audience from getting
bored and wanting to switch over.
Ours is 3:18.
