Evaluation Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Conforms to the stereotypical representations of
villains/antagonists being male . Masculinity is
associated with aggression, strength, power and
dominance; which is what he has over the female
character .
The costumes also worn by the antagonist e.g. the white collared shirt , suggest that he
is a well educated individual with possibly a high paid/powered job. This goes against
the convention portrayal villains as they are usually shown in professions that are low
paid or either criminal. Furthermore his costume suggests that he is an middle/upper-
class individual which would confuse the audience as to why he is stalking the female
character as general portrayals show stalkers as lower/working-class individuals that
are either and or unsuccessful in their careers or outcasts in society.
Our female character conforms to the
representations of this social group as like
the female character Bella in Twilight (
Hardwicke, 2008) they are both portrayed as
weak, helpless and vulnerable. Our character
also conforms to representations of female
characters having to be feminine. Which is
shown in the images of her wearing dresses
and clothing that is associated with femininity
.
Both our antagonist and the antagonist from
the film Now You See Me (2013) appear at the
opening of the film, and have to some extent
their identity hidden from the audience.; this
creates an air of mystery and intrigue.
Additionally both are of white ethnicity which
has connotations of purity, and goodness which
is associated with heroes and protagonists.
The antagonist’s unshaven appearance contradicts the
connotations made by his costume. High powered individuals
are usually shown as clean shaven as it is associated with
smartness, being well –paid, high quality living and a
successful career. Being unshaven is associated with wildness,
and an untamed personality, which may suggest to the
audience possible reasons why he is stalker the female
character.
The antagonist’s age does not conform to typical
representations of his age group. He is a teenager.
Teenagers are associated with being lazy, self-
obsessed, aggressive, deviant at times, irrational and
always looking for ways to have fun and party and
very obsessed about their social life. Our antagonist
does not conform to these typically portrayed traits
of his age group, as he seems to contradict them.
Furthermore someone of his age group is not usually
associated with the kind of behaviour shown in our
opening.
Both films’ portrayals of female characters
shown them with stereotypical traits such as
being delicate — both character’s are not
shown to be doing anything that is associated
with strength or being tough and masculine,
innocent - both wear colours that have
connotations with this trait and the use of
images from our character’s childhood to
present highlight this innocence.
However the antagonist in Now You See Me
(2013) conforms as his costume, black jumper and
dark clothes, are associated with criminals and
lower-class individuals. Furthermore these
clothes make him seem dangerous, suspicious and
untrustworthy to the audience; unlike our
character which presents an air of
professionalism with hi s costume and
trustworthiness.
