The science of synchronization of estrus and ovulation in females has made great strides.
Several protocols that allow producers to precisely schedule insemination of groups of females are available for fixed-time insemination in females.

4. The CIDRCIDR is a vaginal implant, which releases a controlled amount of progesterone
daily. One easy-to-follow program I’ve found to provide the best results includes:
Step 1Step 1, 0day0day — the cattle are run through the chute and the CIDR placed in the vagina.
They are also given a shot of one of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH).
started allowing the CIDRs will induce cyclist on those cows. Tuck the tail neatly inside
the vulval lips.
Step 2Step 2, 7day7day — the CIDRs are removed and a prostaglandin is given at the regular
dosage.
Step 3Step 3 — The animals are given a second shot of (GNRH) when AIed, which is right on
52 to 5652 to 56 hours after the prostaglandin shot with heifers and 60 to 6660 to 66 hours with cows.
The heifers respond essentially 10 hours10 hours quicker and that is why the shorter breeding

continues to be an effective synchronization system for females that have
attained puberty or initiated their postpartum estrous cycles.
• The primary advantage of this system is cost; however, the disadvantage
is that PGF does not initiate estrous cycles in cows that are not cycling.
• Therefore, if your cows are anestrus this system will not benefit your

For producers who desire a little flexibility in a synchronization program, this is an ideal system.
Both the duration of MGA feeding and the interval from MGA to the PGF injection can be altered with little effect on response.
However, before altering any part of the protocol, be sure to understand the possible consequences.

For producers that would like shift their calving date to a date earlier in the year, this system is extremely effective.
Additionally, cows that have just calved with their first calf (first calf heifers) are traditionally the most difficult females for
producers to get pregnant during the breeding season. The added cost in using a system like this may pay dividends in increased
pregnancy rates.

17. Shot PGShot PG: The one-shot prostaglandin protocol is a very basic protocol in which heifers are
heat detected for 12 days.
On the 5th day of heat detection, one shot of PG is given and the heifers that respond will come
in heat in 3 - 5 days.
Heifers that have a functional CL greater than 5 days old will respond to this protocol.

18. CIDR + PGCIDR + PG: The CIDR is inserted intravaginally for 7days. On d 7, the CIDR is removed
and an injection of PG is given.
From day 7 to 12, heats are observed and cattle are bred 12 hours after standing heat.
The CIDR added to this protocol helps those heifers that did not have at least a 5day old CL.
It also decreases the number of days for heat detection.

19. MGA + PGMGA + PG: MGA is a feed additive progestin product.
MGA is very similar to the CIDR; the duration for treatment varies by 7days.
Heifers coming off of MGA have a first heat that is infertile.
For this reason, there is a 19 day lag is between MGA and PG shot.
MGA is not labeled for use in cows.
