1. Music video analysis
I have chosen to analyse‘Style’by Taylor Swift usingNick Lacey’s repertoire of
elements which are: Character,NarrativeType, and Iconography. This video has the
narrativeof female and male and their relationship over the course of 4 minutes and
03 seconds.
Character: The whole video is based on the lovestory between the artistand male
character representing and old love interest, the video consists of the story of the
male character not being really faithful and notbeing fully committed in the
relationship portrayinghimas the a bad guy within the story as the artistexpresses
how its longcontinues journey for her and the male character.
Narrative:The music video itself is half narrative, half performanceas itfeatures
clips of the artistmoving a piece of glass around reflectingthe male characters face.
The mean themes of the video is seton the idea of love; and how a young female
girl finds lovebut has been a difficultjourney due to the male commitment issues
throughout the relationship butalways seems to go back to himand the relationship
seems to go around in a circleas its always seems ‘to go around each time’. The
narrativesideof the video shows footage of the artistand male character playing
her love interest havingfun together, appearingto be in love and happy but the
performance and the lyrics aretheopposites to the action on screen as she explains
she doesn’t know id ‘it’s goingto end flames or paradise’.
Setting: The video is setin various differentlocations, such as a the woods linkingto
the next song featured to her album, a bedroom, the beach, a studio to be ableto
project images on the artists and males body.Theses settings relate the past
relationship with the male and where they spent time together when they were in
the relationship makingthevideo more personal to the artistas itwas quite
emotional relationship for her and the male.
Style: the whole video is filmed in different types of filter for example when the
artistand malespending together in the woods it appears thatthey used a grainy
and hue look to footage to give dreamy effect to the video as if sheremembering
the time she spent with him givingthe video dark. The video is mostly taken in
medium closeup shots creatingthe idea of being up closepersonal aboutwhole theme of songs and digging
deep the relationship.
