2. First impressions
• The videos gives the impression that the
narrative is a love story. The explicit
meaning shows the artist (John legend)
to be expressing his love to a girl. The
woman in the video is actually his wife,
this makes the video more personal and
realistic and this allows the audience to
relate and connect with the artist . The
use of close ups throughout the music
video is very effective and follows the
typical conventions of an RnB and Pop
genre. It shows who the artist is and
shows them as the main feature of the
song. The close ups are also used to
show his facial expressions. These
furthermore represent his emotion in the
song, showing his love and passion for
the lady in the video. They represent a
love story throughout.

3. Tone and mood
• The sounds used over the video seem
to give the audience the impression of
a dull and depressing mood. This is
juxtaposed in the lyrics and the visuals
(story) in the video. The video seems
to be showing a love story and the real
life connection and relationship. The
use of the sound changing frequencies
and tempos, for example high to low,
is also a way to express the scenarios
of everyday relationships, having
highs and lows. It also has many shots
with the piano, this is very effective in
a music video, as it shows he is
playing his own music and expressing
his love through his song for his wife.

4. Representation
• The two characters in the video are John legend and a girl, who is shown to be his love
interest. The intimacy and connection is shown throughout the video, in the visuals and also
relates to the lyrics. The video suggest that e is trying to chase after a girl that he has
already got. It also suggest from the music video that the woman has dominance
throughout the video. It also suggests a much more mature relationship. He is representing
the seriousness of his love and relationship as the video is actually filmed with his wife.

white and this has rather depressing and
gloomy connotations. However, the music
video is expressing their love for one
another whilst playing the piano, on the
contrary this is shown as a romantic way
for a man to express his love to a girl. The

woman he is singing to throughout the
music video. The window is also used to
showcase the woman he is singing to as

appearance as well as the loe he wants
from her. She is also dressed in a
swimming costume or is naked
throughout as well which could connotes
