3. Research
• My research helped me decide on how to make my product stand out with the
comparison against existing products I chose a different colour scheme, font and
style so that my game stood out I came to this conclusion by looking at the
examples I found and noting down the similarities between them making sure that
my product was different. Research wise I saw that my audience had a slightly
younger age than I expected so I had to lessen the violence I was planning to put
on the cover and in certain scenes because otherwise I it would’ve gotten an age
18 rating which would mean my audience wouldn’t be able to buy my game the
age of my audience was shown by the responses on the survey. I changed my
setting in certain parts a bit to appeal to a bigger audience this was also prompted
by responses from the survey. My questionnaire showed me that who I thought
was my target audience didn’t particularly like many aspects of my game. In my
interviews I learned that some of my target audience enjoyed bossfights and so I
added one into my game. Generally I didn’t take some of my research on board
because I either didn’t know how to apply it to my game or because it wasn’t
quite compelling enough to apply it another problem with the application of some
of the questionnaire because it would’ve intrinsically changed the game adding a
lot of work. I could’ve asked slightly different questions so that they applied more
to my product so that I had more applicable answers. My choices for the product
examples might not have most representative examples making that whole section
more iffy as to its effectiveness. Even though I sent my interview questions to a
person who asked to answer my questions I didn’t get sent back a response so
interview wise I only got one opinion which might not represent everyone.
4. Planning
• My mind map isn’t very in depth it’s very short and one of the strings of
thought was fairly similar to another one which means that it wasn’t very
diverse. I didn’t follow or forgot some of my planning which meant later on
some of my work wasn’t planned so its not as structurally sound. My mood
board helped me a lot creatively choosing how to make certain things look for
example I took the terminators red eyes and added them to my cyborg cowboy
apart from colour wise some of my pics were from real life or from top down
games so they didn’t particularly apply apart from slightly style wise. Some of
my mood board doesn’t apply in regards to what my product eventually looked
like for example I had a medieval knight on my cover and a cowboy neither of
which in no way appeared on my mood board. I discounted all of my other
ideas because I was set on what I was doing I could’ve done something else
potentially better but I didn’t because I was set on it which may be a lost
opportunity to do something different. I could've chosen more sidescroller or
pixelated games so that they applied much more I could’ve made a much more
complex mood board which could’ve helped me strengthen and plan my
products better. That and the better images would’ve made my product better
as I could’ve been more certain on what I wanted to make and how it would
look.
5. Time Management
• Very bad I managed to do a lot of my work on 2 days but because I wasn’t
paying attention I wasn’t able to do any animation because when doing it I
decided to do my work in chronological order but that meant that when I
got around to animation I didn’t have access to Photoshop on the days
when I was planning to do animation. Because there wasn’t a specific brief
for what I had to do like animate for example I didn’t do my animation
because why waste my time if it isn’t needed so as far as I’m concerned I
finished my project but I don’t know I guess my product would’ve been
better with more time. I would’ve done animation and cleaned up my
work more so it would’ve looked better.
6. Technical Qualities
Shovel knight has a lot of characters and a
game company logo on the cover which I
don’t have its a lot neater and it doesn’t
have a background like I have. His
sidescroller screens are more elongated
which fit a TV screen and the genre are
much better his back cover has the game
company logo game name and a subtitle
which I don’t have a much more consistent
background as well. Bold words as well.
Shovel knight has much more
complicated backgrounds no
space at the top and bottom
for hero profiles and health
bars mana amounts and coins
within the game shovel
knight doesn’t have a
character description and
profile no boss screen and a
pixelated font to fit the tone.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
I think the back cover route tracker and portal image look good apart from that I think the rest of my work looks a bit
unfinished and boring. I think my ideas and images are fairly creative I don’t know of anything similar. I like the range of
colours and visuals in the portal scene and space scene I like the creative character and the font. I would improve the
character design sheet by bringing the character forward and adding more little details so that it looks better and for the
scene with the knight I would zoom in and add more detail to the characters in the image so that it looks better with the
front cover and back cover I forgot to add a game company logo and I needed to neaten up the lines of the black on the
front cover and the yellow and brown on the back cover so that it looks neater and more professional. I think in the boss
scene and the image with the knight look fine but they don’t fit the sci-fi and futuristic aesthetic of the rest of the images
so they seem a little bit off so if I could figure out some way toa avoid that they would look a lot better. The back cover
also doesn’t have the game title, company logo, title or even a subtitle. So to make it better correct the lines add a logo
add the tile and a subtitle to the back cover correct the aesthetic for certain images and add more detail when needed.
For discussing strengths and weaknesses I think that is already included in does it look good what do you like and how
would you improve.
8. Audience Appeal
I think to an extent I have appealed to my target audience but from my research I know that
whole parts whether completed or not my target audience just does not like or finds other
things more preferable this all showed up on the questionnaire. Specific bits of content my
target audience like are a majority prefer futuristic games from my interview I know that
some of my audience like boss fights. Half my audience likes story driven games and while
that isn’t the most preferable statistic it is still a large amount of my audience agreeing with
certain parts of my product. I think in general I have appealed to say 20% of my target
audience from my questionnaire no one chose the music style, age rating, pixelated style,
retro aesthetic, age rating and level type had 0 precent of the intended outcome and other
parts like the studio feel and graphic style had lower amounts of the vote so while I changed
parts of the game to align as much as possible with the more popular categories the general
opposite answers of the questionnaire mean that it would be virtually impossible without
completely changing entire components of the game to match it so while I still changed it as
much as possible to match with the popular categories it still only adds up to a small
percentage of the target audience.
9. Audience Appeal
• Futuristic genre matches the sci-
fi bits which the survey
matches.
• Pixelated and retro which
doesn’t match.
• Majority on survey liked
shooters
• Boss battle matches interview
preference
• Intended age range being 18
changed to 16 to match survey
11. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– i like the design of the levels and backgrounds.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– to improve maybe the images could look clearer or
show how these images are related to each other.
12. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the style of the game, it looks like it would be a
fun mini game. is there a story to the game?
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– my only suggestion would be that it looks like a game
that would be on multiple different consoles/PC, is it
meant to be a Play station exclusive?
13. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the art style with the stars and the snow;
because it makes it look rather detailed.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– the only thing i would change is adding some more art
to the cover. The back of the dvd case looks great just
the front could do with a bit more background detail.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– Obviously I agree with all the positives beyond that I agree
the front cover needs to be a bit more detailed and that
the images need to be more connected. The fact that it
doesn’t look like it could be on other consoles is
something I didn’t think about but could be solved by
adding a PlayStation exclusive sticker or making an Xbox
cover
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
• there was a comment which said is there a story to
the game which I put a summary off on the back
cover but the font might have been too small
15. Peer Feedback Summary
Based upon the comments in the peer review I would make the cover more detailed add a
PlayStation exclusive sticker and figure out some way to make sure the audience knows the
images are linked to each other.
Why?
After the production stage had ended and the reflection began I noticed many of these
problems myself but couldn’t change at that point so I agree with many comments
completely some of the changes are quite easy to make for the PlayStation exclusive sticker
I would just need to go into Photoshop and put a jpeg of one into a corner. Cover wise I
could’ve gone with my other design which would be easy enough to create because I have
already created a template for it during the planning stage which would solve the other
issue. For the last problem with how are these images linked together I’m not sure exactly it
could be solved but I know for a fact it is a problem the only way I’ve thought of is to make
all the images on the front and back cover futuristic so that it is much more consistent the
problem with that is even though it says on the front cover it is a time travelling game
making the images all the same would make it seem like you’re travelling to the future
when a majority of the game is travelling to the past. So its either inconsistent or
misleading so I think the only way to solve that one would be to leave it as inconsistent
because the buyer will be more angry if the product is misleading
