This document analyzes and summarizes key elements of three EDM album covers:
1) Avicii's "True" album cover features a black background with white font for the song titles and artist name. It includes a silhouette of the artist.
2) Calvin Harris' "18 Months" album cover prominently displays the album and artist name in white font against a brick wall background. It includes two photos of the artist.
3) Swedish House Mafia's "Until Now" album cover has a consistent black and white color scheme. It advertises an upcoming tour and includes extras like a lyric book to engage fans.
2. AVICII – TRUE
Song length – unusual for album
cover. Normally there are numbers
for order to play on CD player for
example
Black background and white font.
Looks artistic and successfully
created
Logo for production
company/label.
Professional and an
element that I can
include
Song titles positioned centrally.
Small font but looks successful on
background. Good font included
– same as artists name on front of
album
Artists logo and name positioned
below album name. Artists name
same font and size as song names
on back of album. However not a
bold font like the song title
Huge font for name of
album. Positioned
centrally in a graffiti
style type. Looks like
paint? All fonts are
same shade of white
which indicates
professionalism
throughout
Silhouette of artist in background. Purple
background with black silhouette works well
in my opinion. Black silhouette also contrasts
with white writing for album cover
3. CALVIN HARRIS – 18 MONTHS
Calvin Harris is situated in the bottom corner of the shot
with a wall situated behind him. He’s looking away from
the wall and portrays that something is fascinating but
out from the shot
Brick wall unique and
street-like. Conventions of
the genre and videos are
seen as conventions of
the genre to have an
urban scene
Writing positioned in the centre of the shot. Artist name (Calvin Harris) has a greater
font size than the title of the album (18 months). White font to stand out and
contrasts with the rest of the album cover. Lines between the words which looks
artistic and successful
Font for song titles are vey small. Can be difficult to see
because of the background image being a similar colour.
However the lines are still included, like the album cover
font
Calvin Harris is very small in
comparison to the rest of the image
and the album cover picture. In the
first image Harris is looking to the
right to possibly suggest that
something interesting could be
there. However on the back cover,
Harris is looking straight at the
camera with nothing to the side of
him
The natural lighting has changed between
the two photos. In the first photo it looks as if
it has been taken in broad daylight.
However the back image looks as though it
is turning into night because the sun has
gone down
4. SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA – UNTIL NOW
The colour scheme is consistent
throughout. Black and white or white
and black. Offered with most EDM
albums and how they have a consistent
colour scheme
There has been an insert for the tour
they are commencing. This creates a
powerful connection with their fans and
how they can interact with them. This is
very beneficial with them and their
audience are able to find out more
about their album and tour itself
According to my research, black and white
colours are often portrayed by the EDM
genre and has made it an iconic feature for
most albums
The spray paint effect gives the
audience an impression that they
are artists, but not only in music
Due to the fact that Swedish
House Mafia released songs
that hit the charts, they finally
released this album. A very
good marketing tool and
makes the audience feel that
there are more hits included so
would make them want to
purchase
Included in the album is a lyric
book. This engages with the
audience to make them learn
songs that were not released
until the introduction of this
album.
