WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
By Lalaine Saloma
Introduction
I have conducted a focus group which accumulated to 10 people. These 10 people
were aged 13years to 18years old. I made sure they were from this particular age
because they were my primary audience. I did this focus group as I wanted to find
responses on what they think of my final media products. Also to discover if I have
been successful to conform my digipak, magazine advert and music video with the
uses of codes and conventions. I’ve had different responses regarding about my media
products. This would aid me as I can use this feedback as part of my reflection and
explain why they choose it.

I have asked this question to find out weather they can distinguish what type of genre
there is and to see if I have successfully created a pop music video. There was 9 people
who stated that they can recognize it as a pop genre due to the choice of song however I
had 2 other genres where they identified from that category. It stated that 7 people
thought it was a hybrid of pop indie due to the fact I included some forms of codes and
conventions such as nature and some filters.
But 2 people thought it was a hip hop genre because there was some urban and modern
locations that would make it as hip hop genre. As a result, what I learned from my
feedback was that it was some what clear that it was a pop music video so therefore I
haven’t successfully made it clear that it was pop because my audience could identify
more than one genre.
This question has enabled me to find out if all of my media products fit
pop genre. As you can see from pie chart, vast majority stated that all of
my media texts fit the pop genre. 9 responded agreed that all of my
media texts does fit pop genre whereas 4 of them stated that they didn’t.
The number is greater because I used the codes and conventions of pop
genre in my music video such as there was love theme, all of my
characters were happy and content, vibrant colors and the use of editing I
conducted. This was all elements that my audience could expect from a
typical music video.
However, I expected that I wasn’t going to have full results because the
way I conformed my ancillary tasks; It was mixed with indie pop
conventions which was nature; the rose. This may have confused my
primary audience as I included across of all my media products. But the
results were better than I expected as I thought I would get 50/50.
I asked this question to find out if my audience can find a link between my music video and
ancillary tasks. 9 people stated ‘Yes’ they could find a link which was the rose. This is what I
intended to do which was to make the rose the focus point in all of my media products. The
rose was my crucial element because it connotes about love and romance; it was the
iconography in my media texts as it had portrayed the theme to them. Without the rose, my
primary audience wouldn’t be convinced that they are in a relationship. Hence why the rose
is an important element as it decodes that they're in love together. They also mentioned that
it was clear for them to find a connection due to the fact I used similar colors across my
media texts which was mainly pink and white. I primarily used these feminine colors to
attract a wider female audience as they would be attracted to my music video.
Lastly, they could identify there was theme which was love. The rose prop reinforced their
dialogues because they had the belief it was due to the fact how I mediated the rose
effectively in my media texts. I did this by using a close up shot and body language; The
body language demonstrated that the rose was gift from him as she was picking it up from
her house door; thus presenting a romantic gesture to signify affection and intimacy to one
another. This was important for me as I wanted my audience to encode the message behind
my music video; allowing them to think and discuss what it signifies. My feedback showed
they can easily find a link with my media texts and has displayed that I successfully did this
due to the graph.
I asked this question because I wasn’t sure if my audience could comprehend my narrative
because there was some interpretation's that different audience can have on their own
perspectives on my music video so I wanted to find out weather they could envision from my
own perception. As shown in the bar chart, it shows that 9 people states that they could
understand the narrative. They said yes due to the song that it was reinforced that he was “the
one” and it was shown that he was the one because of the way body language was
constructed from the couples. It conveyed to them that the girl was falling in love with him so
it made clear for my audience that they were in a relationship.
However there was 3 responses who didn’t understand the narrative. This was because they
thought it would be reasonable to have my artist, to have the role of being the girlfriend. I
didn’t do this because I wanted another person to be the girlfriend because I wanted my artist
to act like she was narrating my music video. This is because I wanted to develop my narrative
because majority if my pop artist are the main focus as well as lip sync. Therefore I wanted to
differentiate to make my couple to be the main focus as well as my artist because it was love
song therefore it my couple has to be showcased. Finally, the feedback from what I received
indicates that vast majority understand my narrative and they knew how my artists linked with
my couple.
This question enabled me to see if I actually have successfully targeted my primary
audience which were 13 years old to 18 years old. As well as, obtaining another secondary
audience which could be young adults. I established mixed responses regarding about my
overall media texts. 9 people liked my music video due to the fast-paced editing I used as
well as my camerawork. They also mentioned that they liked the choice of my artists outfit
therefore they were attracted to my music video.
This was because I realized that majority of teens I asked were inclined to yes because they
could relate to my music video. Consequently, it indicates I am targeting the right
audience. Next, 7 people stated “No” regarding about my digipak. They mentioned there
was a sustainable amount of editing as opposed in my magazine advert which generated 3
people uncertain if they were attracted to my media texts.
Reflection
In conclusion, it was imperative for myself to do this investigation as I wanted to see if I met the
brief which was to generate a music video, along with a digipak and magazine advert. Overall, I
gained positive reviews throughout my media texts which meant I was successful to conform pop
genre. What I learnt from my audience feedback was that they had liked different uses of my
media texts such a the use of locations, costumes or editing. They never had just one reason to
like it, they had multiple reasons to like it. This is beneficial for me as I’m glad audience can enjoy
my work. However, there was some negative responses therefore I have to make improvement
and take it on board to meet my audiences needs.
