2. To enable me to target my unsigned bands audience I researched the bands genre to
find out what they would like to see in a music video. I created a survey on
SurveyMonkey asking the indie-pop genre audience questions relating to music videos
and the audience themselves for example what they like to do and wear. The screen
shot below shows that 100% of the people asked said that in this genre they would like
to see a narrative based music video, with this information I created a music video in
this style.
I also learned from this survey more about my target audience as seen below I asked
what there typical dress is, the majority said that a denim shirt often appeared in there
day to day wear, others said that their favourite bands t-shirt’s were also a common
occurrence.
Music Video
3. To make the music video relevant to my target audience I created a narrative
based music video based on the survey results shown before. The main age group
who listen to this genre were teenagers, with this in mind I wanted to create a
video relevant to them, meaning they can relate easily to the issues being raised.
In this case the young girl suffers from drug and alcoholic addiction, this issue can
easily be related to this age group in today's society.
Changes
After reading feedback given by my target audience I
decided to make a few changes to the music video.
The main point raised in the video was the editing in
the drug exchange scene, they felt that the shot was
repeated to many times in the sequence adding no
benefit. I changed this issue and reduced the amount
of shots in the sequence. The other feedback given
revolved around the colouring filters in the video. The
audience felt that the piece would flow better if it had
more black and white filters in adding a greater
consistency within the piece. With this feedback in
mind I changed a few more shots into black and white
where the sound of the music changes
significantly, such as the chorus.
4. Digipack
I asked an audience after my first draft of
digipack was done what they thought. I asked
if they preferred the inside picture to be in
black and white or in colour, they thought
that the colour was to bright against the black
and white outside panels but thought that
the black and white all over was
uninteresting. With these comments in mind I
tried a colour inside cover but dulled down
the colours so it wasn’t so vibrant. My results
also showed that the inside cover needed to
have something else other than just the one
picture on it. I felt that the picture itself
worked so I decided to add on top of it lyrics
from songs on the album. They are in a white
flowing font in the sky representing the
clouds and wind which I feel doesn’t retract
attention from the original image.
5. Magazine Advertisement
After being given feedback on my original
magazine advert I changed a few features
to create the final outcome seen here. It
was said that the bottom of the banner was
unbalanced, with this in mind I added the
record labels logo on the right hand side to
compliment the iTunes logo on the left. It
was also said that the starred reviews given
originally were not as relevant to my band
as they could be. I changed two of the
reviews from ‘The Times’ to ‘MOJO’
magazine and ‘The Guardian’ to ‘SPIN’. This
also helped my target audience to feel that
the band was recognised by the genres
own magazines, boosting appeal to the
indie-pop fans.
6. I have learned that the more feedback given on each task, the easier I
found to edit and change details. The feedback and advice given on the
online questionnaires was easier to collect results due to SurveyMonkey
putting the results in charts, this created a simple overview of what I
needed to change to reach the needs of my audience. However I felt
that the paper questionnaires handed out had a wider verity of answers
and had more detailed answers. To improve my productions further I
would have created more questionnaires at each stage of the
development process for all three productions. For my print
productions I would have asked fans of the genre more about what they
would like to see in a digpack and magazine advert instead of relying on
research into similar bands own products.
In all I have learned that the best way to attract my target audience is to
ask them directly what they like to see in the products they buy so that I
can fulfil the audiences requirements.
