Focus GroupSummary of Final Product
As a part of ourfinal evaluationsandalsomarketresearch,we createdafocus groupon Facebook
where we publishedthe firstdraftof the musicvideowe have createdforpeople tocommentonit
withimprovementsand alsowhichpartslookgoodand professional.Inthe focusgroupwe asked
the recipientstoanswer5 questions;
1) What do youthinkare the bestpointsof our musicvideo?
2) How wouldyouimprove ourmusicvideo?
3) Do youthinkthe blue tintto the musicvideoiseffective increatingadreamlike
atmosphere asintended?
4) Has the indie genre beenconveyedthroughcostume,editing,e.c.t?
5) Do youfeel the narrative wassuccessfullyconveyedandwasunderstandablethroughthe
editing?
The firstquestionwe askedtothe recipientsenquiredastowhichparts of the musicvideothey
thoughtwere the mostentertainingandenjoyabletowatch.People statedthattheyenjoyedthe
clipinthe middle of the sequence whichbrieflychangedfromthe blue tinttoblackandwhite, which
conveyedthe innerconflictof the male characterand couldpossiblyalsobe interpretedtoportraya
sense of clarity. A large proportionsaidtheylikedthe inclusionof reflexivity,whenthe filmre winds
to backtrack the stepsof the characters, as it isnot conventionalof ausual musicvideoof the indie
genre.People additionallystatedtheylikedthe shakycameraeffectwhichcreatedaslightsense of
disorientation,whichallowedthe audience tofeelempathetictowardsthe male character
representedinthe narrative.
The nextquestionaskedthe audience whichpartsof the musicvideocouldpossiblybe improvedto
make the videobettervisually.Fromthiswe discoveredthatpeople thoughtthe lipsyncingatthe
endof the musicvideocouldbe improvedasitlooksslightlyoutof time.We additionallyreceived
responseswhichstatedthatthe artificial zoomwe usedcouldhave beenreplacedwithatracking
shotto make the sequence flowpossiblyabitsmoother.
We thenaskedparticipantswhethertheylikedthe blue tinteffectwhichwe have addedontoour
musicvideotomatch the narrative,andemphasise the themeswhichare implied.The responseswe
got stated,thatthe blue tintwhichwe addedcreatedadreamlike haze whichcorrespondswell with
the musicvideonarrative.Othersstatedhow the blue tintcouldpossiblygiveaverynostalgicfeel,
and made itbelievable tobe afantasyof the male characters whichadditionallycomesoff verywell
throughthe use of the softfocus.Overall people believedthisspecificaffect enhancedthe narrative
we had conveyedwithinthe musicvideo,despite itnotbeingatypical genericconventionof indie
genre of music.
Anotherquestionwe askedwasif the indiegenre of musicwasconveyedthroughthe
cinematography,editing,mise enscene e.c.t.The responsessuggestedthatthe indie genre hasbeen
successfullyconveyedthroughbothcharactersdue tothe factthe girl iswearinglaidback,casual,
dark clothinganda greenparka coat alongwiththe boy who iswearinga dark coat and converse
whichare stereotypical of the indie genre.A response we received statedthat, thistype of narrative
isn'tusuallydemonstratedwithinindie/alternativevideos,andthe wayinwhichthe narrative is
tacklesallows anarrative enigmatoarise as the audience are oblivioustothe reasonswhythe song
has beenchosenuntil all isrevealedtowardsthe end. Additionally,responsescommentedonhow
the textusedat the start and endtitlesof the videoscorrespondstothe usual style whichThe
Smith’svideosare seentofollow,associatingthe videowiththe indiegenre.
The final questionwe askedinthe focusgroupaskedif theybelievedthe narrative was
understandable,andexpressedwellthroughthe editing.The response we receivedstatedthatthey
foundthe narrative easytounderstand,asit wastoldclearlyandwell.A participantanswer
suggestedthatthe start of the videoappearedtobe a verystraightforwardromance narrative
howeverasitunveileditwasclearthathisgirlfriendwasn’treal.Iwayitwaseditedmade iteasyto
understandwhile still successfullygettingthe message across.Theyfoundthat the editingmade the
narrative easyto understandasthe reflexivitysuggeststhatthe male characteris recallingpast
experienceswithhisgirlfriendandthisallowedanostalgicfeel tothe narrative.
Overall,the responsewe receivedfromthe focusgroupforthe firstdraftof our musicvideo,was
positive.People statedthattheyenjoyedthe narrative, anditwasdifferenttothe usual
conventional musicvideosof the indiegenre of music. Fromthe resultsgatheredinthe focusgroup,
we have conductedthatwe needtoimprove the endingscene of ourmusicvideo,asitishighly
importantthatthe musicvideolooksprofessional.
