institutions
MEANING
•Teamwork promises to be a
cornerstone in achieving progressive
academic growth of the institution,
faculty and students.
BENEFITS FROM
TEAMWORK
• Institutions would often accrue
various benefits from teamwork. More
prominent of these are enhanced
academic performance, faculty
benefits, vitality and institutional
upgradation.
•Enhanced academic performance:
This may come in many forms
including increased academic
productivity among the students,
improved quality in teaching and
learning and improved student
need-based services.
•Faculty benefits: Faculty benefits
from teamwork includes better
quality of work and reduced stress
in the workplace. Teamwork gives
faculty the much required freedom
to grow in a respectful manner .
•Vitality: As teamwork ingress the
basics of motivation and group
dynamics, there will be great
cooperation and enthusiasm among
team members toward goal
achievement. This results in fewer
better coping with struggles and
errors in the work system.
• Institutional upgradation:
Faculty will have better access to
top level administrators. In
addition, the team environment
constantly challenges teams to
innovate and solve problems in a
creative manner.
EFFECTIVE TEAMWORK
An effective teamwork in turn,
depends on
•Cooperation
•Trust
•Training and
•Rewards
COOPERATION
Cooperation occurs when the efforts
of team members are systematically
integrated to achieve a collective
educational objective. Cooperation is
superior to competition in promoting
the avenues for achieving the
educational objectives.
TRUST
In educational institutions because
of academic restructuring,
economizing, integration and
increased faculty turnover. To build
a mutually entrusted working
environment, either the institution
or faculty need take initiative.
TRAINING
Training is necessary in various
aspects including academic, clinical,
interpersonal as well as managerial
skills and group dynamics because
team members must know how to
function effectively as a team.
REWARDS
The reward system in most
institution is individual based (e.g.,
Best Faculty Award) as faculty
members are rewarded based on
performance appraisal done by the
administrators. To the extent that
teams perform well, they should be
rewarded.
GUIDELINES TO ENHANCE
TEAMWORK
IN
NURSING EDUCATIONAL
INSTITUTIONS
 Have an optimal number of team members;
ideally not exceeding 12. (e.g., Team for
coordinating the students regarding co-
curricular and extracurricular activities).
Take care to ensure that teams comprise
members with at least three types of skill-
technical/ academic skill, problem-solving
and decision-making skills along with
interpersonal skills.
Encourage the teams to have specific goals
and develop commitment toward realizing
the goals.
Have proper leadership and structure for
teams. Leadership and structure provide
clear focus and direction.
Do not allow members to hide inside a
group, form “pseudo teams” and indulge in
social loafing.
Establish appropriate academic
performance evaluation and suitable
reward systems not only for the students
but also for the faculty, based on
performance appraisal.
Ensure the team members develop high
mutual trust. High performance teams are
characterized by high mutual trust.
Create a sense of urgency in the first
meeting.
Set lucid and tangible rules of behavior.
Challenge the team with new projects or
problems to solve periodically.
