2. Landscape
• The land is mostly mountainous with Himalayan
ranges along the northern borders criss-crossed with mountain
ranges running north-south. These divide the state into five river
valleys: the Kameng, the Subansiri, the Siang, the Lohit and the
Tirap.
3. Pollution
• In 2010, Arunachal Pradesh had 6.09Mha of natural forest, extending
over 75% of its land area. In 2020, it lost 12.6kha of natural forest,
equivalent to 6.63Mt of CO₂ of emissions.
4. Air Pollution
AQI : 119 PM 2.5: 74 PM 10: 154
Currently 1,383,727 people in Arunachal Pradesh are breathing
toxic air that does not meet WHO's clean air guidelines. The
district with the worst air pollution in Arunachal Pradesh is Tirap,
where PM2.5 is forecasted to be 12.6 µg/m3
The air quality data released by Arunachal Pradesh State
Pollution Control Board (APSPCB) for capital complex during
Diwali period is shocking.
This shows that air pollution is no longer an issue confined only
to big cities.
5. Causes:
Motor vehicles produce high levels of Carbon
Monoxide (CO) and Hydrocarbons (HC) and
Nitrogen Oxides (NO).
Construction activities, bad roads and burning of
fossil fuels are responsible for Dust (particulate
matter) Pollution.
Effects:
Reduced lung functioning, coughing, asthma
attacks, bronchitis.
Irritation of eyes, nose, mouth and throat,
headaches.
Cardiovascular problems. Cancer.
7. Water Pollution
• As in many other states of India, water pollution in Arunachal Pradesh results
from urbanization, industrialization, intensification of agriculture etc.
• There is a wide spread pollution by sewage, nutrient, toxic metal, industrial and
agricultural chemicals as well as domestic sewages.
• The rivers flowing through Arunachal Pradesh have been considered to be clean
and uncontaminated in the past.
• However, few studies indicated that these rivers are now getting polluted due to
domestic, industrial and agricultural wastes.
• Thus, the present study aims to assess the water quality of Dikrong river (a
tributary of River Bhamputra) in the stretch from Pappunallah to Kankarnallah of
Naharlagun township in Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh (India).
Naharlagun is a twin city of the capital complex of Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh
