Introduction
This Insights Discovery profile is based on Tomáš Rus’s responses to the Insights Preference
Evaluator which was completed on 14 September 2015.
The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates
identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built around
the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This model
was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings.
Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work in
understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to the
present day.
Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understanding
and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and
weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help them
to better respond to the demands of their environment.
Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It
reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or delete
any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identify
whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you.
Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take
action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them on
areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personally
and interpersonally.

Overview
These statements provide a broad understanding of Tomáš’s work style. Use this section to gain
a better understanding of his approaches to his activities, relationships and decisions.
Personal Style
Tomáš is seen by many people as being independent and self-contained. He relates to,
remembers and builds on positive experiences. His strength is his ability to gather technical
information, which gives him potential as an excellent researcher. He handles crises at work in a
low key, controlled way. He approaches people and events as a dispassionate observer, with the
objective of arriving at the most comprehensive truth.
He tends to appreciate tradition and is interested in maintaining established rules and
procedures. He can become immersed in all the minute detail yet stay focused on the task in
hand. Serious, conscientious and loyal, Tomáš is a dedicated worker. He will seek an
environment in which he can be quietly productive. Tomáš is a straightforward, honest and
pragmatic person who prefers to get on with it rather than to talk about getting on with it. Tomáš's
focus is inward, meditative and reflective.
He is concerned with schedule and system and appears to some to be a very private person. He
tends not to trust strangers and is concerned about his family, reputation and job. Tomáš
conveys great precision and economy of effort in both thought and language. Correctness,
analysis and logic are all-important to him. Tomáš is so realistic and practical that he can see
ways of minimising effort on almost every project.
His commitment to his obligations comes much less in words, and much more in getting things
organised and done. Logical, analytical and objective, Tomáš is unlikely to be impressed or
convinced by anything other than reasoning based on solid, concrete facts. He is keen to pick out
logical inconsistencies. He is aesthetically appreciative and values quality. He often sees when
colours match or blend and may have a highly developed taste for art, music and food. He is a
down-to-earth realist and prefers the company of others like himself who mirror his rather quiet
and unassuming demeanour.
He is usually less interested in new principles and theories than new projects and processes.
Once committed to an idea or project, Tomáš has enormous resolve to carry it through and
would like others to share his determination. Tomáš is careful and orderly in his attention to facts
and details. He is thorough and conscientious in fulfilling all his responsibilities. Tomáš is always
outstandingly practical and sensible. He is very practical and gets great satisfaction from the
completion of specific, concrete tasks.
Interacting with Others
Tomáš prefers a quiet environment and tends to gravitate towards workmates like himself.
Despite being somewhat quiet, perhaps even self-effacing, Tomáš will converse at length on
subjects that he knows well enough to enable him to display his wealth of information. Tomáš is
generally content to work on his own rather than be a visible part of a team. He sees through
slick images and false presentations and is wary of being taken in by compliments or praise. To
guard against being manipulated he will be sensitive to indications of a hidden agenda. The

avoidance of social engagements may make him feel guilty at having forsaken a social duty in
order to satisfy his need for privacy and solitude.
He tends to take a sceptical, critical attitude to information that has not been verified by the
senses and is likely to distrust people who are careless about facts, sloppy about details, and
who favour imagination or novelty over facts. He may prefer not, or may find it difficult, to express
personal feelings to others. He tends not to care how he is seen as measuring up to others'
standards as it is his own standards that are important to him. He may not readily express how
he feels, unless he is allowed to feel safe and comfortable in speaking his mind. Tomáš prefers
quiet and may develop ingenious ways to make himself invisible, particularly when he is called
upon to take part in social or gregarious interaction.
He may lack an understanding of how his behaviour affects others and can be critical and blunt
in giving recommendations for improvement. He tends to withdraw when stressed. Occasionally,
his ideas are so complex that he will have difficulty communicating them and making others
understand how he thinks. He is likely to prefer the dialogue which is going on in his head with
his internal critic to participation in “meaningless” social chit-chat with others. His inner reactions
are seldom revealed, but behind the outward calm appearance, he looks at things in an intensely
individualistic way.
Decision Making
Tomáš's decisions are usually consistent, practical and appropriate. Tending to be sceptical of
new ideas if he doesn't see their practical application, he prefers to take time to consider the
overall objective. He usually delays decision making until all the facts and details are available.
His focus on the present leads him not to take anything for granted - even information from
people he respects. Tomáš's quizzical and probing nature may create solutions which open up
fresh processes.
Tomáš thinks in extremely complex ways and seeks to organise concepts and ideas rather than
people. He has a tendency to separate out the different components of his life, wanting
predictability and preferring to know various options in advance. He may need to appreciate that
whether something works or not in practice may not be the sole criteria in the decision making
process. Tomáš tends to make logical, private decisions, seeing and stating things quietly,
clearly and deliberately. Tomáš's practical nature and acceptance of established procedures
ensures he is dependable and consistent.
He prefers to focus inwards and is more inclined to “wait and see” than to declare his hand
readily. He has an ability to note what is needed in a situation and act accordingly. Above all, he
is concerned with what is “right” and because of this may appear slow in the decision making
process. Every project presents itself as a mental challenge and he reflects on every stage of
decision making. Tomáš is extremely realistic and relies on and trusts what his senses tell him
about his world.

Key Strengths & Weaknesses
Possible Weaknesses
Jung said “wisdom accepts that all things have two sides”. It has also been said that a weakness
is simply an overused strength. Tomáš's responses to the Evaluator have suggested these areas
as possible weaknesses.
Tomáš’s possible weaknesses:
● May not express his opinions as quickly as the situation warrants.
● His need to assimilate information takes time. This may frustrate others who expect a more
immediate response.
● Over-dependence on rules and procedures.
● Unwilling to bend rules, sometimes even in an emergency.
● Tends to avoid social interaction.
● May be slow or unwilling to express his true feelings.
● May “tinker” with things out of curiosity.
● Sometimes unaware of others' feelings.
● Over evaluation can slow down his decisions.
● Tends to undervalue the differences in people.

● Present only solid and reliable facts.
● Back up your assertions with reasons and data.
● Gently remind him of the human dimension.
● Give him all the facts.
● Use written communications whenever appropriate.

Communication
Barriers to Effective Communication
Certain strategies will be less effective when communicating with Tomáš. Some of the things to
be avoided are listed below. This information can be used to develop powerful, effective and
mutually acceptable communication strategies.
When communicating with Tomáš, DO NOT:
● Ask lots of questions in quick succession.
● Try to build a relationship too quickly.
● Be vague or rush him.
● Be misled by his apparent reticence into thinking that he doesn't care.
● Be too informal or waste time on social trivia.
● Give instructions without reasons.
● Be too loud and hearty.
● Labour the point or give lengthy verbal instructions.
● Assume his pauses imply lack of interest.
● Hint obliquely.
● Withhold vital information.
● Flatter in order to influence him.

Possible Blind Spots
Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who we
are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our less
conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “Blind
Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test them
for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.
Tomáš’s possible Blind Spots:
Attempting to be more flexible and open-minded will help prevent Tomáš from becoming too
rigid. He is something of a perfectionist, and can be hypersensitive to criticism of his work. Giving
in on small items decreases the likelihood of him being seen as too stubborn and controlling.
Quiet and reserved, he may appear cool and aloof. He is inclined to be guarded except when
with close friends or colleagues of long standing. He may be slower at producing results than
some others as gathering data is often the most stimulating part of the job for him. His ability to
detect what might go wrong is perceived by some others as suspicion of anything new and
untested. He would do well to accept that people he respects may want to know what is going on
in his life, and he should realise that the only one who can provide the accurate map is him. He
may rely so much on his logical, analytical thinking that he overlooks the people issues.
Sometimes rather closed minded, he may believe that someone else's ideas will not work as well
as his own. He has a tendency towards perfectionism which leads him to refine and polish his
ideas to a point where they may even fail to emerge. Tomáš gives the impression he believes in
economy of effort. He must be careful that this is not seen as, nor leads to, laziness. He can be
reserved and hard to get to know, only willing to share his inner feelings with people he trusts.
Tomáš needs to try to become more aware of the talents, efforts and contributions of others and
to more regularly offer compliments and praise for good performance.

Opposite Type
The description in this section is based on Tomáš's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often,
we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different
to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal
growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness.
Recognising your Opposite Type:
Tomáš’s opposite Insights type is the Inspirer, Jung’s “Extraverted Feeling” type.
Inspirers are outgoing and enthusiastic, seeking favourable social environments where they can
develop and maintain contacts. Verbally effusive, they are good at promoting their own ideas.
They can create enthusiasm in others for their cause. They have a wide network of
acquaintances and relationships.
Tomáš will notice that the Inspirer tends to misjudge the abilities of self and others. Inspirers
often leap to favourable conclusions without all of the information. To Tomáš they may appear
inconsistent. Inspirers find controlling and planning their time difficult. The Inspirer is a smooth
talking persuader and may appear indifferent to people, such as Tomáš, who appear to be not
such “extraverted achievers” as themselves. However, Inspirers sometimes take conflict or
rejection personally and bitterly.
Many Inspirers are convinced that they are naturally superior and may come across to Tomáš as
somewhat boastful. They will prefer communicating orally rather than through the written word
and may dislike and avoid tasks that require attention to detail or heavy paperwork. Tomáš may
perceive Inspirers as shallow or superficial, due to their glib way with words.

Opposite Type
Communication with Tomáš's Opposite Type
Written specifically for Tomáš, this section suggests some strategies he could use for effective
interaction with someone who is his opposite type on the Insights Wheel.
Tomáš Rus: How you can meet the needs of your Opposite Type:
● Be aware of his social interests.
● Be spontaneous and harmonious.
● Be clear on completion details.
● Don't always expect brief, specific answers.
● Offer praise and appreciation when due.
● Share in and promote his ideas and visions.
Tomáš Rus: When dealing with your opposite type DO NOT:
● Insist on cumbersome reporting procedures.
● Assume that his sunny disposition means that he agrees with everything you say.
● Restrict or restrain his natural exuberance.
● Say “any time will do”.
● Create a hostile environment devoid of feelings.
● Forget to offer praise and recognition when it is due.

  • 4. Tomáš Rus © The Insights Group Ltd, 1992-2015. All rights reserved. Page 4 Introduction This Insights Discovery profile is based on Tomáš Rus’s responses to the Insights Preference Evaluator which was completed on 14 September 2015. The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built around the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This model was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings. Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work in understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to the present day. Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help them to better respond to the demands of their environment. Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or delete any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identify whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you. Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them on areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personally and interpersonally.
  • 5. Tomáš Rus © The Insights Group Ltd, 1992-2015. All rights reserved. Page 5 Overview These statements provide a broad understanding of Tomáš’s work style. Use this section to gain a better understanding of his approaches to his activities, relationships and decisions. Personal Style Tomáš is seen by many people as being independent and self-contained. He relates to, remembers and builds on positive experiences. His strength is his ability to gather technical information, which gives him potential as an excellent researcher. He handles crises at work in a low key, controlled way. He approaches people and events as a dispassionate observer, with the objective of arriving at the most comprehensive truth. He tends to appreciate tradition and is interested in maintaining established rules and procedures. He can become immersed in all the minute detail yet stay focused on the task in hand. Serious, conscientious and loyal, Tomáš is a dedicated worker. He will seek an environment in which he can be quietly productive. Tomáš is a straightforward, honest and pragmatic person who prefers to get on with it rather than to talk about getting on with it. Tomáš's focus is inward, meditative and reflective. He is concerned with schedule and system and appears to some to be a very private person. He tends not to trust strangers and is concerned about his family, reputation and job. Tomáš conveys great precision and economy of effort in both thought and language. Correctness, analysis and logic are all-important to him. Tomáš is so realistic and practical that he can see ways of minimising effort on almost every project. His commitment to his obligations comes much less in words, and much more in getting things organised and done. Logical, analytical and objective, Tomáš is unlikely to be impressed or convinced by anything other than reasoning based on solid, concrete facts. He is keen to pick out logical inconsistencies. He is aesthetically appreciative and values quality. He often sees when colours match or blend and may have a highly developed taste for art, music and food. He is a down-to-earth realist and prefers the company of others like himself who mirror his rather quiet and unassuming demeanour. He is usually less interested in new principles and theories than new projects and processes. Once committed to an idea or project, Tomáš has enormous resolve to carry it through and would like others to share his determination. Tomáš is careful and orderly in his attention to facts and details. He is thorough and conscientious in fulfilling all his responsibilities. Tomáš is always outstandingly practical and sensible. He is very practical and gets great satisfaction from the completion of specific, concrete tasks. Interacting with Others Tomáš prefers a quiet environment and tends to gravitate towards workmates like himself. Despite being somewhat quiet, perhaps even self-effacing, Tomáš will converse at length on subjects that he knows well enough to enable him to display his wealth of information. Tomáš is generally content to work on his own rather than be a visible part of a team. He sees through slick images and false presentations and is wary of being taken in by compliments or praise. To guard against being manipulated he will be sensitive to indications of a hidden agenda. The
  • 6. Tomáš Rus © The Insights Group Ltd, 1992-2015. All rights reserved. Page 6 avoidance of social engagements may make him feel guilty at having forsaken a social duty in order to satisfy his need for privacy and solitude. He tends to take a sceptical, critical attitude to information that has not been verified by the senses and is likely to distrust people who are careless about facts, sloppy about details, and who favour imagination or novelty over facts. He may prefer not, or may find it difficult, to express personal feelings to others. He tends not to care how he is seen as measuring up to others' standards as it is his own standards that are important to him. He may not readily express how he feels, unless he is allowed to feel safe and comfortable in speaking his mind. Tomáš prefers quiet and may develop ingenious ways to make himself invisible, particularly when he is called upon to take part in social or gregarious interaction. He may lack an understanding of how his behaviour affects others and can be critical and blunt in giving recommendations for improvement. He tends to withdraw when stressed. Occasionally, his ideas are so complex that he will have difficulty communicating them and making others understand how he thinks. He is likely to prefer the dialogue which is going on in his head with his internal critic to participation in “meaningless” social chit-chat with others. His inner reactions are seldom revealed, but behind the outward calm appearance, he looks at things in an intensely individualistic way. Decision Making Tomáš's decisions are usually consistent, practical and appropriate. Tending to be sceptical of new ideas if he doesn't see their practical application, he prefers to take time to consider the overall objective. He usually delays decision making until all the facts and details are available. His focus on the present leads him not to take anything for granted - even information from people he respects. Tomáš's quizzical and probing nature may create solutions which open up fresh processes. Tomáš thinks in extremely complex ways and seeks to organise concepts and ideas rather than people. He has a tendency to separate out the different components of his life, wanting predictability and preferring to know various options in advance. He may need to appreciate that whether something works or not in practice may not be the sole criteria in the decision making process. Tomáš tends to make logical, private decisions, seeing and stating things quietly, clearly and deliberately. Tomáš's practical nature and acceptance of established procedures ensures he is dependable and consistent. He prefers to focus inwards and is more inclined to “wait and see” than to declare his hand readily. He has an ability to note what is needed in a situation and act accordingly. Above all, he is concerned with what is “right” and because of this may appear slow in the decision making process. Every project presents itself as a mental challenge and he reflects on every stage of decision making. Tomáš is extremely realistic and relies on and trusts what his senses tell him about his world. It has also been said that a weakness is simply an overused strength. Tomáš's responses to the Evaluator have suggested these areas as possible weaknesses. Tomáš’s possible weaknesses: ● May not express his opinions as quickly as the situation warrants. ● His need to assimilate information takes time. This may frustrate others who expect a more immediate response. • 12. Tomáš Rus © The Insights Group Ltd, 1992-2015. All rights reserved. Page 12 Possible Blind Spots Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who we are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our less conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “Blind Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test them for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues. Tomáš’s possible Blind Spots: Attempting to be more flexible and open-minded will help prevent Tomáš from becoming too rigid. He is something of a perfectionist, and can be hypersensitive to criticism of his work. Giving in on small items decreases the likelihood of him being seen as too stubborn and controlling. Quiet and reserved, he may appear cool and aloof. He is inclined to be guarded except when with close friends or colleagues of long standing. He may be slower at producing results than some others as gathering data is often the most stimulating part of the job for him. His ability to detect what might go wrong is perceived by some others as suspicion of anything new and untested. He would do well to accept that people he respects may want to know what is going on in his life, and he should realise that the only one who can provide the accurate map is him. He may rely so much on his logical, analytical thinking that he overlooks the people issues. Sometimes rather closed minded, he may believe that someone else's ideas will not work as well as his own. He has a tendency towards perfectionism which leads him to refine and polish his ideas to a point where they may even fail to emerge. Tomáš gives the impression he believes in economy of effort. He must be careful that this is not seen as, nor leads to, laziness. He can be reserved and hard to get to know, only willing to share his inner feelings with people he trusts. Tomáš needs to try to become more aware of the talents, efforts and contributions of others and to more regularly offer compliments and praise for good performance. Personal Notes

Often, we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness. Recognising your Opposite Type: Tomáš’s opposite Insights type is the Inspirer, Jung’s “Extraverted Feeling” type. Inspirers are outgoing and enthusiastic, seeking favourable social environments where they can develop and maintain contacts. Verbally effusive, they are good at promoting their own ideas. They can create enthusiasm in others for their cause. They have a wide network of acquaintances and relationships. Tomáš will notice that the Inspirer tends to misjudge the abilities of self and others. Inspirers often leap to favourable conclusions without all of the information. To Tomáš they may appear inconsistent. Inspirers find controlling and planning their time difficult. The Inspirer is a smooth talking persuader and may appear indifferent to people, such as Tomáš, who appear to be not such “extraverted achievers” as themselves. However, Inspirers sometimes take conflict or rejection personally and bitterly. Many Inspirers are convinced that they are naturally superior and may come across to Tomáš as somewhat boastful. They will prefer communicating orally rather than through the written word and may dislike and avoid tasks that require attention to detail or heavy paperwork. Tomáš may perceive Inspirers as shallow or superficial, due to their glib way with words. Personal Notes
