How did you attract/address your
audience?
Inspiration
• My music magazine was inspired by “Vibe” magazine
as their magazine attracts a similar audience as mine,
using informal language or “slang” to relate to younger
generation or possibly words that only a hip-hop
fanatic would understand. Statistics for “Vibe” include;
target age of 18-34, with 50.5% of their audience being
male and “49.5% female. Referencing question 4 of my
evaluation you can see that hip-hop magazines are not
gender specific although they are favoured more by
male, which was the aim of my magazine.
• My target audience is 16+ only 2 years off of vibes,
therefore taking inspiration from this magazine was an
effective approach.
Front Cover
• The most obvious technique I used to draw attention to
my cover is the large, bold font used consistently
throughout the magazine. The greyscale effect on the
image allowed me to use white and yellow as my main
colours, outlining them black so they appear to be
pushing off the page.
• My sell lines are vague so any reader would be able to
take interest but have to read the magazine to
understand what they're about.
• My pug also labels “free download inside” which again,
is vague but also has the key word “free” which
instantly draws attention to a consumer.
• The last technique I used was a rhetorical question with
exclamation in my header, this makes it seem even
more important which would make a consumer feel like
they need to know it.
• The pose of the artist on my front cover connotes that
he is a rapper, followed by the designer hat combined
with the hoodie and coat fits the hip-hop persona,
showing the magazines professionalism.
Contents Page
• The first technique I used was to make all important
titles clear, I also used word play sub headings in
relation to the content above the page numbers of the
magazines content.
• The free download/giveaway is now labelled, saying
which different groups you can download an album
from, the multiple choice could interest the reader
more as they may not be interested in a specific
offered album.
• At the bottom of my contents page I included the
website for any consumers/prosumers that are strictly
technophile, making it easier for my audience to be
addressed of information, it also attracts more readers
as its easier to get involved in this generation if a
magazine has multi-media platforms. The outtakes of
the cover are also included on the website to further
attract prosumers to my magazine as they’ll get to see
the making of the magazine.
• For the cover story/article I included a brief
explanation to enthral readers, as if they get a taster it
could attract them more to read the rest.
• In my contents there's information about multiple
groups/artists, fashion and also tours, considering my
mood board of my target audiences interests they
should be active (tours) show interest in multiple
artists and also have a knowledge interest for fashion.
Double Page spread
• The most effective technique used for my double page spread was the way I addressed my article;
my use of language/grammar and perspective. It was written in first person to really put the reader
in the shoes of the interviewer to give a deeper understanding, to further develop this technique the
use of informal language/slang would make it even easier for someone in the target age to read.
This was a technique I understood and utilised as I knew it would be most effective, someone of a
young age or interested in hip-hop doesn’t want to read a formal short story about a rapper.
• I followed the same colour scheme throughout the magazines pages as it is a technique that could
give my magazine a colour it relates to for popularity.
• Although a niche/unknown rapper was used in my magazine I used a cliché title of “The Brooklyn
lifestyle” as it is something that people can empathise with, as it reaches out to “the most of”. (the
most of is a select group of people that can relate to a topic)
• This article includes everything anyone interested in hip-hop would like, drugs, gangs, individuality,
life lessons/messages, it also includes information about the artists music, lifestyle. An effective
quote taken from this article is “No niche rapper is ever listened to, they’re just deemed as
delusional wannabes…that’s the problem.” this reaches out to any “wannabe” to show they aren’t
unheard of, giving the audience a feel of status/importance.
• The image can also be used as a wall display if it appeals that much to the reader.
