(Question 2) how does the media product represent a particular social group
1. How does the media product
represent a particular social group?
2. • When searching for inspiration to create my
magazine I already had an insight on what I
wanted it to be based on. I wanted a hip-hop
genre music magazine that appeals to any
active, independent thinking 16+ year olds.
• I had to portray the independent, young
rapper in my magazine and used a few
different techniques and applications to do so.
3. Front cover
• My main image could appeal to the younger
generation interested in hip-hop due to the pose, or
possible the way he’s dressed. The artist/model is
dressed in your stereotypical rapper uniform, a
hoodie, waterproof coat and designer hat, this could
appeal to readers as a lot of consumers interested in
hip-hop are also interested in fashion.
• As you can clearly see the artist/model is white, a
well known stereotype is that rappers are black, this
could appeal more directly to an audience although
this was unintentional.
• The evil pose could reach out to the young “thugs”
as it could attract people of similar mannerism.
• The cover also displays a range of different rap
groups/artists that should appeal to my target
audience, they are all similar artists meaning the
interest suggests the correct music taste for my
targeted social group.
4. Contents Page
• My contents page image took a lot
of inspiration from an image of
Eminem holding a pen and pad
while rapping, this could not only
portray the artists passion for
music (that the audience would
definitely share) but also his
individuality, this could influence
the consumers as the rapper in the
magazine is a niche/underground
rapper becoming popular,
something possible for anyone,
made clear by challenging the race
stereotype.
5. Double Page Spread
• The article of my double page spread represents my target
audience perfectly, including fashion, drugs, violence and a dark
past (although it does not influence readers to follow them); the
key aspects that stereotypically make a rapper famous in this
generation.
• The article also uses the language that one of its
consumers/readers would use, including slang and hip-hop specific
grammar, representing the stereotypical rapper social group
perfectly.
• My cover, article and contents page also reference multi-media
platform meaning that it reaches out to technophiles, a trait
included in almost every social group in this generation.
